Victorino, Utley Lead Gold Glove Candidates

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Fri, September 05, 2008 09:11 AM

Early this season the Phillies were creating errors by the dozen. We railed on the Phils’ inability to make simple plays. But as the season has carried on, certain Phils are making their Gold Glove cases.

Here’s a look at those players. (Zone rating is the amount of plays you make in your zone; range factor is how many putouts you make on average.)

Shane Victorino
My pick for center field Gold Glove, Vic has enjoyed a splendid year patrolling the Bank’s plus lawn. With a .905 zone rating, only Cody Ross has fared better (in 200 less innings). Vic has committed just one error in 273 chances. While he carries a low 2.42 range factor, that comes from a low 265 putouts. Guys just don’t hit the ball into center when playing the Phils. Vic also leads center fielders with seven assists, and seen respect lately with guys holding up on fly balls hit to him.

Chase Utley
Leading all second basemen in zone rating (.838), range factor (5.26) an putouts (300), Utley should be a lock for a Gold Glove. Voters could go with Freddy Sanchez, who pulls in a Web Gem every two nights, but Utley has showed himself to be more highlight worthy lately, so I think Chase could walk away with a Glove.

Jimmy Rollins
He leads all NL shortstops with a .988 fielding percentage and six errors, carrying a high 4.45 range factor and pretty good .851 zone rating. His major competition in defending his crown is Miguel Tejada, who has committed just nine errors in almost 200 more innings.

Pat Burrell
Burrell doesn’t make flashy plays in left field. He rarely dives, jumps only a little, and extends rarely. But his .990 fielding percentage (3rd among NL LF) and .888 zone rating (2nd) show he makes plays. He also leads all NL LF in assists, with 12. While Ryan Braun has made many more big plays, Burrell has been steady as a rock this season.

Pedro Feliz
Chipper Jones leads all third sackers with an .817 zone rating, but Feliz trumps him in range factor (2.75, 2nd among NL 3B) and zone rating (.983, also 2nd). The guy in first in both categories, however, might be the winner: Troy Glaus, who has made stunning plays at third for the Cardinals.

  1. GM-Carson Says:

Victorino deserves an outfield Gold Glove, no question.

Utley is the likely candidate at 2nd base too, and there’s no reason Rollins shouldn’t repeat at SS.

Despite the fielding stats, Burrell has a 0% chance at getting a Gold Glove. But what we all need to recognize is that he is an improved fielder this season.

Feliz has been great at 3rd base in my opinion, but I expect Chipper or Glaus to get the award.

  2. Don M Says:

If Chase Utley wins the Gold Glove.. then something is wrong with baseball.. he’s got 12 errors already guys.

If Feliz wasn’t on the DL, I could see him getting votes, cause he’s been really solid, but he’s got 8 errors.. but also makes tough plays look easy out there.

Burrell is actually having a GREAT season out in LF.. his OF assists might get him more votes, but the fact that they replace him late in games might cost him some..

Victorino, in my opinion, is the best defensive CF in the NL

Jimmy Rollins should get it again in the NL

  3. Joshua Says:

Pedro Feliz has no shot at the Gold Glove, it’s either going to Wright or Chipper…and when you already have a gold glove, you get the benefit of the doubt in the voting. meaning wright has a better chance then chipper.

just look at all those gold gloves by jeter, lol

  4. MikeB Says:

Seeing Utleys name was suprising. He might be worthy of a Bronze or Silver Glove but I woudnt go as far as gold.

Vic is money with a cannon for an arm. Should be a lock.

Just out of curiosity – does anyone know where RyHo ranks? is he even top 10?

  5. GM-Carson Says:

Yes Utley may have 12 errors and Feliz 8, but if you’re an every day infielder at 2nd, SS, or 3rd you’ll likely have 10+ errors every season even by Gold Glove standards.

  6. NJ Says:

Errors are a big impact with the GG selections but are not the be and end all. David Wright won the GG last year with Edwin Encarnacion-like error numbers but inspite of that the writers felt he played the best 3rd base. Utley has played a lot of innings resulting in extra errors but he has turned a lot of DPs and his other fielding statstics are impressive, the only other serious candidate is Brandon Phillips.

Vic has played a very good CF although Rowand has very good fielding numbers and McLouth’s numbers can’t be ignored. As for Burrell it’s disgraceful that the award is handed to 3 outfielders and not 1 of each position, Burrell’s arm has been very effective but Holliday and Braun make a very good case themselves, if a LF wins though it’ll be a hell of a surprise.

Strangely enough, looking at the numbers if Howard didn’t choke so much with balls hit his way he’d be a gold glove candidate as his numbers suggest that’s the only area he’s failing.

  7. Don M Says:

Right.. we’ll Brandon Phillips and Freddy Sanchez both have like 7 errors..

Don’t get me wrong, I love Chase Utley, I just don’t think he desrves a Gold Glove at 2nd base… i won’t complain if he wins one, but there are more deserving people

  8. Don M Says:

  9. NJ Says:

It’s not about errors, Utley’s really shown up at 2nd this year and has made plays. Brandon Phillips really is the only legitimate challenger because the stats show he rivals Utley in the plays he’s made in the field.

  10. Don M Says:

Howard isn’t THAT bad at 1st base…. 2nd highest number of total chances.. he has the most errors, but still a .989 Fielding%

Pujols runs away with it at 1st.

Geovany Soto might win the Rookie of the Year, AND the Gold Glove at Catcher…

  11. Don M Says:

Thats fine.. im not trying to start an arguement.. I just don’t think Utley deserves the Gold Glove.. thats all

  12. NJ Says:

Pujols ranks at the top of the 3 man catagories in FPCT/RF/ZR and statistically is the strongest candidate at any position in the NL.

Don as for Utley it’s not Philly bias here, with Vic it is but Utley is a legitimate candidate. He leads 2nd basement in innings, has a ar superior ZR means he’s making more plays and has completed more double plays but Brandon Phillips does tie him in RF with a slightly but not significantly higher FPCT. Utley is not the popular vote here, he is the genuine leader statistically for the GG at 2nd.

Bengie Molina would be the stand-out candidate behind the plate if his pitching staff wasn’t so poor but ‘everyone’ loves the Cubbies this year, I swear if they don’t win the world series the ‘fans’ will still vote them as the winners.

  13. NJ Says:

^Just to clarify not trying to ruffle feathers Don, I didn’t think Utley was a legitimate candidate but the numbers show differently.

  14. Don M Says:

I guess just from seeing him all the time, I realize that he bobbles a lot, dives a lot etc… he’s not the smoothest guy out there.. him and uggla are both tied for the league-lead with 12 errors.. but Utley has the most chances, put-outs etc too.. we’ll see..

Nate McLouth on the Pirates has 0 errors.. Victorino has 1…

and out of all the guys that don’t have 1.000% fielding percentages, Victorino has the highest at .997%…. and he covers a ton of ground, and has a cannon for an arm….

In my opinion, if anyone on the team deserves a Gold Glove, its Victorino

  15. NJ Says:

Vic might sneak one if Rowand or McLouth get one by virtue of him playing CF but McLouth’s numbers stand out, it’s not just his errorless FPCT but his other numbers are impressive though Rowands actually are more impressive. The thing going against Vic is his number of put outs and whether he gets the glove will be on whether the writers decide that’s because teams really are avoiding hitting to center intentionally.

On a random have you guys seen Drabek’s back and has been pitching well in GCL/Low A… Great news there.

  16. Eb Says:

Gold Glove is a scam of an award in the sense that it is voted on. They need a system that takes into effect the zone rating and fielding percentage

  17. JoeyNooch Says:

Of course its voted on! when you just use numbers Bobby Abreu ends up with a gold glove. You cant commit and error if you dont run towards the ball, right Bob?

Good season for Pat the Glove.

  18. bull Says:

Can someone send Charlie burrell’s stats so he stops replacing him late in the game.

  19. Bruce Says:

I have no doubt that Rollins will win another gold glove. The fact that Rollins won a gold glove last year gives him an enhanced reputation to go along with his stellar fielding statistics for this season. The competition in most other positions is too close to call.

If I may, an off topic here; Tim, your latest “PhilliesNation Poll” concerning the predicted number of wins at season’s end is not important to me.

I don’t care how many wins we finish (88, 90, 92, etc) with. I want the postseason, regardless of how we get there. And, if we don’t get there, who cares how many games we won or how close we came to getting there?

The ‘06 Cards barely won half of their regular season games, yet made
the postseason and became World Champs. The ‘73 Mets won even fewer regular season games than the ‘06 Cards and came within one Series win of being Series Champs. Then there are teams like the ‘93 Giants, who won 102 regular season games, yet missed the postseason entirely.

To the point, be it wild card or the division, what matters is making the playoffs… whatever the number of wins it takes.

  20. Runshouse Says:

Vic won’t get one just for playing center because Beltran has that 2 years running now.

  21. The Sports Complex :: Blog Archive :: Final Call Rounds - September 4th :: Philadelphia City Paper :: Philadelphia Arts, Restaurants, Music, Movies, Jobs, Classifieds, Blogs Says:

[...] Tim Malcolm at Phillies Nations looks at the Phillies who might, could, and should bring home gold g….  There are some surprises there.  My two thoughts: Utley and that’s it, although if Tejada gets it over JRoll I’m officially freaking out. [...]

  22. DAVE Says:

I doesn’t matter what zone ratings or range percentages defenders have. The people who vote could give a crap about all that technical jargon. To base gold glove projections on these statistics is silly. And don’t even factor Jimmy Rollins in consideration – he missed so much time earlier in the year he’s naturally going to have the least amount of errors committed. Get real.

That said, Victorino is the ONLY Phillie who will win a gold glove. Like it or not, David Wright, Jose Reyes, and Carlos Beltran are going to win for their respective positions. Hate on the Mets all you want, but if you watched those 3 guys day in and day out you’d be in total agreement. Also, throw Chase Utley’s name away because the guy who deserves the most defensive credit at 2B is Brandon Phillips of the Reds. You don’t have to agree…but when the awards are handed out this Fall check back to this post and see I was right about everything.

  23. NJ Says:

Saying the ‘techincal jargo’ doesn’t matter is like saying the writers don’t look at OBP, the whole point of having these stats is to have evidence of how good a guy actually is on defense and they are factored in more than anything.

Reyes doesn’t have a hope in hell at a gold glove this year and the whole watch him and see how great he is arguement falls down. The guys down near the bottom of almost every defensive statistic at short including RF which measures put outs by innings so the flying around the outflied on Reyes idea is a myth… The proof is there. As for third Chip and Feliz have very credible stats on D but the guy I think might come out of nowhere to take it is Troy Glaus. The only reason David Wright won last year was his superstar status, his stats last year are very average. Hate to say it but Beltran has a case for a gold glove this year.

The proofs there in the stats whether you like it or not…

  24. DAVE Says:

NJ, your opinion is clearly biased in opposition of the Mets. But whatever, you’re allowed to disagree all you want. I’m just telling you don’t be surprised when Reyes, Wright, and Beltran all take home gold glove awards this winter. It’s going to happen. Book it.

Why would I expect anything but disagreement on a Phillies blog?

  25. NJ Says:

Good point we do like to disagree. The writers love trends and the darlings of the league but I try to form my opinion on the evidance at hand which is what makes baseball such a credible sport, the proof is almost always there. The thing I go back to is when Grady Little blew the playoff game leaving Pedro in the game all those years ago and lost his job, the concensus view on why he was fired wasn’t that he chanced his arm and came up empty but that he had the evidence Pedro was at the pitchcount he was sure to get hit at and ignored it.

Wright winning the glove last year was a joke and Reyes winning it this year would be even more of a joke on the basis of what the numbers say and they don’t lie that to that amount. Sure I don’t seeing the Mets get anything but I’ve looked at this on the evidence and that evidence shows Beltran is as worthy for gold glove consideration on the stats, the other two don’t and thats not bias it’s look at the evidence.

  26. DAVE Says:

But I think your evidence is flawed, NJ. If you want to go by fielding percentage to determine the best defensive players, then you’re allowing a fielder who has had far less chances a better chance to win a gold glove than one who may have committed more errors but also had many more chances. All of those stats are relative to how many opportunities a player had to field the ball. The only tell-tale way of awarding the gold glove to the right guy is to follow every individual game and determine if the player is making all the routine plays, making a good amount of spectacular plays, and isn’t committing any mistakes during key moments of a game. I’d much rather award a gold glove to someone using those criteria than going by some calculation that determines range rating and all this other statistical mumbo-jumbo. Because what those numbers DON’T show are all the big plays a defender has made to end innings, save runs, and win games. And trust me, watching the Mets all year I know first hand that Wright and Reyes definitely deserve gold gloves this year despite some random throwing error in the 1st inning or some bad call by the official scorer.

  27. Joshua Says:

I think Reyes has a legitimate chance at coming home with the award. hes played trememndous defense for most of the season, he did have a bumpy first month though..but he’s really pulled through and he makes OUTSTANDING plays.

Wright is the same boat. plus he won last year, which gives him a good shot at going 2 in a row.

Beltran and vic both ahve a shot, since its always three CF that win….i really think tehy need to change the system so 2 corner fielders get one and 1 CF gets picked.

  28. NJ Says:

Joshua you make a good point that Reyes makes outstanding plays but his overall package leaves at short leaves a hell of a lot to be desired and he’s fundementally poor, Edwin Encarnacion will make a hell of a play from time to time and Braun made some great plays last year but that didn’t stop the Brewers from accepting the fact he’s an aweful 3rd basement and moved him to the outfield.

A dozen or so outstanding plays shouldn’t win you a gold glove, go on ESPN and go to individual fielding stats for the NL. Look at the stats for short, 3rd and CF and if you look at them without bias then you’ll see things a little differently.

The awards shouldn’t be a popularity contest and no-one should be a shoe in, Greg Maddux doesn’t win the glove on the mound because people think he’s good defensively, he does because the stats are there showing he is. The stats show Reyes is an average short stop who’s ‘oustanding’ plays are pretty much erased by not fielding short as well as half of the guys in the NL and with less effective range as half the guys in the NL, it’s the same with Wright although his competitors for the award struggle to stay healthy lessening their case.

(if anyones planning on pulling the bias card here put it away as I’m on record saying Beltran is deserving of the award this year on the basis of the stats)

  29. Joshua Says:

i just see reyes as a good candidate for gold glove and i bet he finishes in the top 3

  30. DAVE Says:

NJ, I just don’t know how you can say Reyes is “fundamentally poor.” Can you cite me an example that you’ve seen with your own eyes? If you’re a Phillies fan I’m sure you’ve only seen Reyes play about 12-15 times this year and you’re basing you’re opinion on one botched play you happened to notice. However, if you have seen Reyes play everyday for the past 3 months like I have you’d know that he has been automatic on every routine play and terrific on many spectacular plays. You can continue to look up how he ranks in the middle of the pack in errors committed and fielding percentage, but all that stuff is subjective according to official scorers. I’m not saying he’s played the position perfectly, but I know a gold glover when I see one. And I’ll be first to admit that Wright should not have won the award last year (it should have been Zimmerman). But this year is much different, with or without the errors. And I guarantee both Wright and Reyes will win gold gloves this year.

  31. Joshua Says:

Dave, I agree with you. Reyes is a great fielder and makes outstanding plays. he just has that bad first month

  32. NJ Says:

    LOOK AT THE EVIDENCE!!! http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/stats/fielding?groupId=9&season=2008&seasonType=2&split=82&sortColumn=rangeFactor

    IM NOT

  33. NJ Says:

^TALKING SPECIFICALLY ABOUT ERRORS AND FIELDING PERCENTAGE BUT LOOK AT THE EVIDENCE!!!!

he’s suppose to be this rangy shortstop who maybe plays all over the infield yet he ranks 4th worst in the major leagues in the actually plays he’s made divided by his innings and he’s played more innings than any other shortstop in the majors!

He’s 2nd worst at zone rating meaning isn’t fielding balls in the area a shortstops meant to field!

Are you a Mets fan? If your not that how the hell can you make this arguement when the proof is there to the contrary!!!!!

  34. NJ Says:

Dave can you please represent Ryan Howard in his next arbitration hearing because we can really do with saving some money…

I know I’m on a rant here but jesus christ what next? Soto for MVP…

  35. Philles are our bitches Says:

You can have gold gloves at every position….I’d rather have the NL East title

    Good luck this weekend….lmao

  36. NJ Says:

very intellegent troll… Why don’t you form a site with the Phils trolls on your sight and have ‘timm’y/’jimmy’ conversations with eachother and let the real fans talk about the game…

  37. the truth hurts Says:

OK, NJ, I see I’m not going to sway you opinion. All I ask is that you watch these next three game with extreme intent and keep a close eye on Reyes and Wright. If they botch a bunch of plays and throw the ball all over the place then I will concede to you that neither is deserving of a gold glove. But if they handle all the easy plays and mix in a few of the extraordinary variety, then you need to take notice of how good they are despite whatever the numbers say. Knowing how the two of them have played for the majority of this season, I’m very confident that they’ll show you how worthy of gold glove consideration they really are.

  38. DAVE Says:

    ???

  39. NJ Says:

a 3 game series doesn’t make a series, have you looked at the fielding stats? I’m not trying to rubbish the guy for being a Phils fan, I’ve looked at the stats which tell the story. I don’t belive Burrell’s a GGer above other candidates on the evidence and he has a more compelling case than Reyes.

DAVE again two questions: are you a mets fan and have you looked at the evidence?

  40. DAVE Says:

I’m a Met fan, but that has nothing to do with my opinion, I promise. As I’ve stated, Wright winning the GG last year over Zimmerman was a sham. All I can tell you is that if you had watched Reyes and Wright the entire season as I have you’d be in total agreement, like Joshua. Yet, no Phillie fan is making any case for Burrell to be a gold glover. It’s because gold gloves don’t go to the “vanilla” defenders who only make the easy plays and not much else. They go to the flashy players who may make a few more mistakes from time to time, but make many more spectacular plays that keep their team in ballgames and make you go WOW that was a great defensive play. Victorino is that type of player. But so are Beltran, Reyes, and Wright. No doubt.

  41. Joshua Says:

Dave said it compleltely right, reyes has more errors because he attempts more plays which may lead to errors, but the plays he makes surely makes up for that…however i bet of all those errors he has this season, the majority came in the first half, before he stepped it up down the stretch.

  42. NJ Says:

I say again look at the stats!
    http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/stats/fielding?groupId=9&season=2008&seasonType=2&split=82&sortColumn=rangeFactor

1 standout play out of 10 doesn’t make you a gold glover. Do you know what most eligable writers go on? Evidence… They take the major stats and look at where players lie across the board, Reyes sinks to the middle and in some cases llower because he isn’t a gold glover.

He’s a popular flashy short stop who the stats show doesn’t not field balls in the shortstop zone better than Tejada, Greene, Rollins, Escoabar, Izturiz, Ramirez, Guzman, Theiot, Drew

He does not range and make plays to the amount Izturis, Escobar, Hardy, Rollins, Guzman, Ramirez, Tejada, Greene have

Hey has a lower fielding percentage that Rollins, Tejada, Greene, Izturis, Hardy Drew, Escobar (FPCT does not soley factor in errors but also assists and and put outs made)

With that evidance how can you say he’s the best shortstop in the NL just because you watch him? How can you say Tejada or Escobar or Hardy aren’t better…?

  43. NJ Says:

Joshua if his plays made up for that then why isn’t his zone rating or range factor near the top? He ranks 2nd in total chances but low in almost every other catagory meaning he isn’t making enough plays, he makes a few flashy plays and FAR less plays than most even ranging to make plays and the evidence is there if you look at it.

Does stepping it up down the stretch superceed someone who’s been doing it all year with less exposure?

  44. DAVE Says:

Because those stats are misleading and inconsequential. And if you seriously think voters for gold glove winners are going to sit down and look up all these numbers to help them pick their winner, you’re crazy. I bet only 1 out of 5 voters could even tell you want a range factor is. And that’s because it is a meaningless stat. If you honestly think freaking Casear Izturis is a better defensive shortstop than Jose Reyes you must be on drugs.

Look at it this way: Ryan Howard’s average has been around .230 all year, if not lower. Does that make him a bad hitter? Um, no. That’s because you can’t go strictly by the numbers. So Reyes’ “range factor” and “zone rating” may not be in the top of the pack. But if there was a stat called “spectacular play percentage” Reyes would be at the top of the chart. TRUST ME. I SEE HIM PLAY EVERYDAY.

I grow tired of this argument. Just don’t say you weren’t forewarned that Reyes and Wright will be gold glove winners this year. I’m telling you it’s going to happen and I don’t care what dopey stats you want to throw at me.

  45. Joshua Says:

I can’t guarantee that reyes will WIN gold glove, but he will def. be in top 3, no doubt about that.

  46. NJ Says:

Oh my god you are a complete idiot… Cesar Izturis has alreay won a gold glove! Do you know why the Cards signed him to play short? Because he’s one of the best defensive players in the game period.

And do i think the writers sit down and look at the numbers? Well yes! How else would an emplyed writer and patron of the inside baseball community decide than looking at the evidence, their not blog writers… Were talking about people like Buster Olney who tend to know more about baseball than you or I because they look at the same stuff the teams do… THIS STUFF!

Answer this, would you say on base-percentage is misleading? The stats are not misleading, if a player has a low OBP it means he isn’t getting on base and isn’t getting extra base hits and then you’ll see his average and power numbers way done. For defense the same goes, just because you see Reyes make SOME plays doesn’t mean he’s the best, we see Burrell make plays in left but that doesn’t make him better than Holliday or one of the other LFers who the stats show has fielded the position better.

AND “TRUST ME. I SEE HIM PLAY EVERYDAY.”…. WELL GIVE HIM A METS GOLD GLOVE YOU NARROWMINDED UNIFORMED DOUCHBAG!

  47. Don M Says:

All Mets fans wear Underwear with no dikholes in em

  48. NJ Says:

Joshua that’s the problem, he could be in the top 3 because some writers pander to the idea baseball will loose its appeal if you don’t shower the faces of the game with awards.

Lets play a little game here and make it irrelevant of the Phils/Mets: Who’s should win the AL gold glove at short?

  49. NJ Says:

    ^and why?

Come on Don join the arguement and someone who from the look of it actually informs his opinions by evidence, it would seem these Mets fans think Jose Reyes is the standout uncontestable best SS in the NL inspite of him ranking very low down in almost every catagory there is to judge how well a position player is fielding his spot…

  50. DAVE Says:

we’ll see who’s the narrowminded uninformed douchbag when reyes wins the gold glove. i doubt you’ll admit you’re wrong… because like a typical crybaby phillie fan you’ll blame the media and voters for being too biased in favor of new york and refuse to admit that reyes is, in fact, the best defensive shortstop in the NL. go jump in front of a bus and do the world a favor. SEE YA

  51. NJ Says:

You should clearly be writing books about baseball your so informed… Am sure everyone would love to read something thats fiction that starts every setence with I think… Learn to read a stat sheet, you might actually learn something.

Q: What do you call someone who doesn’t know anything about basell but tried to sound informed and refuses to accept the evidence clearly put in front of them
A: An uneducated morosed sheep who has the intellect and arguementing skills of someone who probably doesn’t understand why it’s wrong to date their cousin.

  54. DAVE Says:

I can’t wait until the offseason when Reyes wins the gold glove and you have to admit you’re wrong. Yuck it up in the mean time, cause I’ll have the last laugh.

  55. NJ Says:

really, I’ll laugh with you as it’ll probably be the day Ryan Howard wins one too. I just heard the NL MVP has been decided, it’s Ryan Ankiel… The writers said the couldn’t be bothered to look at the stats but he’s hit a few HR’s and they like the story.

Yes sarcasm is intended but I thought I’d go by your logic DAVE.

  56. Joshua Says:

to NJ’s question: Who Should win the Gold glove in the Al: i personally like orlando cabrera for the award but we all know derek jeter will at least get some consideration because he is Derek jeter.

  57. NJ Says:

    whats your reasoning for cabrera?
