Wagner Will Not Return In ‘08 … ‘09?
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Mon, September 08, 2008 03:33 PM
From the “aww shucks” department: Billy Wagner will miss the rest of the season, and likely, 2009.
Wagner will undergo elbow surgery to repair his torn medial collateral ligament and torn flexor pronator. The Mets have been without Wagner since Aug. 3 (ironically, the Mets have been a much better bullpen lately).
This is probably the one time I would accept laughter on someone else’s misfortunes. I won’t do it myself, but I’m sure some of you won’t take the same road.

I’d never wish injury on anyone, but I do think that this vindicates (to some extent, at least) the front office’s decision not to offer a 4th year to Wagner during negotiations a few years ago. There was no way a guy that size, throwing that hard with those mechanics, could avoid injury for four years.
Now, that vindication is obviously tempered by the fact that Tom Gordon is on the shelf as well, but Flash will wind up costing the Phils $24 million less than Wags. So in the end, I guess it was something of a pyrrhic victory.
September 8th, 2008 at 3:42 pm
I’ll leave the cruel jokes about the man’s injuries to someone else but I will say I’m gladder than ever that Phillies didn’t give him the four-year deal he demanded before he left for the Mets.
September 8th, 2008 at 3:53 pm
I laugh at the Mets for signing him to the extra years and money when everyone knew this would happen.
September 8th, 2008 at 3:56 pm
As much as I hate him cause he’s on the Mets… I love the fact that he called out his teammates for never being accountable and not sticking around to talk to reporters after loses and stuff.. and even when he blows a save or takes a loss, he’ll still man-up and give interviews..
BUT.. he’s not a young guy anymore.. and he relies on throwing HEAT, not really on his movement, so this will be hard for him to rebound from
September 8th, 2008 at 3:59 pm
Wagner’s days as a closer are done. I don’t forsee someone taking a chance on him for other than one year, and he’d be a setup guy at best.
September 8th, 2008 at 3:59 pm
I will not take the high road cause we all know that “Hick” never did. HAHAHAHAHAHA Billy! Who’s laughing now you C*CK SUCKER! Sorry about the language everyone just had to get that out….
September 8th, 2008 at 4:02 pm
ill bet he cant close when he comes back. probably will setup or something like that in ‘10.
September 8th, 2008 at 4:09 pm
Brian… no one’s laughing over the Galvin Floyd for Freddy Garcia trade (without a physical)? (chuckles)
September 8th, 2008 at 4:13 pm
aw shucks… this just guarantees the Mets will give K-Rod a blank check
September 8th, 2008 at 4:17 pm
I can agree with Bruce up there but if we signed Wagner back then we wouldn’t have Lidge now. I will take Lidge over Wagner any day. I guess now all the next GM has to do is trade for Valverde as we are collecting Astros closers.
Seriously, Wagner took the money and ran! I liked watching him pitch when he was here, but he choked over his career in big games or down the stretch. And then when he signed with NY he couldn’t get over Philadelphia. He kept running his mouth about the situation here when he was there. He stiffed us for New York and that never sits well with Philly people. We see you took the money but keep us out of your mouth. It stinks he got hurt but seriously, he was more bark then bite. I mean Doug Jones was a great closer too with a ton of saves. But check out Wagner’s stats in September and the playoffs with his career. Very mediocre then anything.
September 8th, 2008 at 4:19 pm
Wagner has pitched his last game as a Met. K-Rod’s stock just shot up a bit.
September 8th, 2008 at 4:32 pm
Matt, good point that Wagner choked big for us. Case in point is when he blew saves against the Astros for us down the stretch and we ended up losing the Wild Card to Houston by 1 game.
September 8th, 2008 at 4:36 pm
i remember two years or so ago people kept referring to Omar Minaya as a “genius” and all i kept thinking about was how silly that was because all he did was go out and sign a bunch of past their prime injury prone superstars who were fading fast . and not only that, but sign them to ridiculous huge money and long deals. who didn’t see this coming? with pedro too. everybody knew those contracts were terrible when he gave them. everybody knew those two guys would never play out the entirety of those deals.
September 8th, 2008 at 4:37 pm
Mets are going to go hard after K-Rod without a doubt… this might actually be a break for the mets in 2009… They are going to give k-rod whatever he wants…
Mets bullpen is actually been much better without wagner…
September 8th, 2008 at 4:37 pm
yeah, I totally agree with the K-Rod rumors. He’s hispanic and good so Minaya will go after him hard. They’ll use the money they paid Alou and El Duque this year.
September 8th, 2008 at 4:38 pm
I feel bad for Wagner – he’s a competitor and tough ball player. His mouth oftentimes writes checks his ass can’t cash, but he’s a rare breed in that he calls it like he sees it. You have to appreciate honesty sometimes, like someone else noted. However, he plays for the Phils’ biggest rival, and I’m happy to see we won’t have to deal with him the rest of this season. And that’s about as “high” of ground I can give to a Met.
September 8th, 2008 at 4:38 pm
Wagners deal might have insurance meaning the mets lose no cash for the 2009 season… all that backend money will go right to K-rod
September 8th, 2008 at 4:47 pm
good. i hope the mets do sign k-rod. sign a guy coming off a career year . give him money as if he’s going to have that year every year. then three years from now you’re looking for a new closer because the guy you signed came back to earth and is only average.
September 8th, 2008 at 4:48 pm
k-rod has always been a great closer and is just having a better year this year.
September 8th, 2008 at 4:54 pm
Nice to see many of you taking the high road. It’s never good to wish or laugh at another team’s injury misfortune because karma always finds a way of catching up with you.
So, with Wagner and Maine all but out of the picture for 2008, would it not be like the Phils losing Lidge and Blanton for the stretch run? If that happened, I tend to think most Philly fans would all but write off the season. Just makes it all the more impressive that the Mets continue to maintain their (slim) lead in the division and win big ballgames without some of their major players. That said, it would be a disappointment if the Phils didn’t emerge as NL East winners. Outside of Gordon and Jenkins, who weren’t that great to begin with, the Phils are pretty much at 100%, while the Mets keep piecing together a competitive starting rotation and bullpen. If the Phils honestly think they’re better than the Mets, it’s time to put up or shut up, because you no longer have any excuses.
September 8th, 2008 at 5:00 pm
Hard to kind of laugh at it for 2 reasons.
1) Karma can be a bitch, especially in sports. Last thing you want is to cheer ill fortune on injuries, because it wouldn’t be long before it comes right back and bites us.
2) The Mets bullpen has been, for some odd reason, considerably good since he went down. For whatever reason, Wagner made that bullpen more unstable.
September 8th, 2008 at 5:18 pm
haaaaaaaaaaahahahahhahahhaha.
September 8th, 2008 at 5:54 pm
21-10 without Wagner.
Mike T., you’re a bitch.
September 8th, 2008 at 6:24 pm
kkkkkkkkk rod is on they way
again nice to see some people take the high road here. But for the mets this is a good thing. philly fans know in a big spot wagner coughs it up, and they would have not even went after krod is wagner is healthy. We’ll see how long that 21- 10 record hold tho
September 8th, 2008 at 6:44 pm

I hope the Mets don’t land K-Rod. On the other hand I think the Phils will have a great team in 2009 know that are pitching is improving combined with are offense that has been missing in this year.
September 9th, 2008 at 11:09 am
4 million through the turnstiles, a televison network that prints money, and a new stadium in ‘09 allows the Mets to offer these kinds of deals to players. For them, “overpaying” doesn’t translate into “wasteful”.
It was Billy Wagner….or Braden Looper.
It was Delgado….or Doug Meinkevitcz (sp?).
It was Pedro….or Beltran likely doesn’t sign there.
Not to mention that the buzz on Pedro’s signing helped launch the tv network, and he won 15 games in’05.
Worth the extra money, all.
You make your money in sports when you sell.
Until then, you spend to win. If you can afford a 500 million dollar franchise, you can afford to “give away” an extra 12 million to a player to earn is services.
Especially because you aren’t even sure if you’re giving it away at all.
In Wagner’s case, it looks like they did.
