Yes! Myers, Phils Sweep Brewers, Seize Wild Card Lead

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Sun, September 14, 2008 10:39 PM

Everytime you think they’re out …

Brett Myers was phenomenal. Brilliant. Amazing. Use any word you’d like. Myers went all nine, made one bad pitch, made 94 good pitches and grabbed an easy win. The Phillies won 6-1. The win gave the Phils a four-game sweep over the Brewers, pulling them to a tie with Milwaukee for the NL Wild Card lead. (The rallying Astros are now two back, thanks to Carlos Zambrano, who no-hit Houston tonight.) They’re one game back of the Mets for the NL East lead.

Myers used his changeup and fastball together to get quick outs, mixing in his curveball to get four strikeouts. He gave up just two hits — a single by Ray Durham and a line-drive home run by Prince Fielder. By the time Fielder’s shot came down the Phils had practically secured the win.

With the crowd on fire, the pinstripes got early runs. Jimmy Rollins led off the game with a hustle double, and Chase Utley knocked him in with a groundout. Rollins was on base all five times he stepped up to the plate, walking three times and driving in two. Shane Victorino had a four-hit night, Pat Burrell hit his 31st home run of the year, and Myers even knocked an in a run with a clutch two-out single. (He scored on a Rollins single, barely beating the relay throw.)

This game felt like a do-or-die game — actually, it felt like Sept. 30, 2007. The crowd was hot. The pitching was awesome. The offense was all-business. What a huge, huge win.

SWEEP!! Myers — Absolutely huge!! 1 game back of Mets. Tied for Wild Card. Mets folding Again. Gonna be a lot of frustrated Mets fans here in Israel.

  2. Georgie Says:

I wonder if Mets fans are getting that icky feeling in their guts?

  3. Mike T. Says:

was at the game tonight… almost playoff atmosphere, but 5 thousand more people would’ve helped. great game.

  4. Georgie Says:

    Was it a sellout tonite?

  5. Mets fan Says:

Georgie – as a die-hard Mets fan, I can tell you with 100 percent certainty that I do not have that icky feeling in my guts. I can’t speak for all Mets fans, of course.

What happened this weekend does not totally surprise me, nor does it give me reason to panic. The Mets have played roughly .635 ball since the end of June, while the Phils are just over .500 or so. This weekend is perfectly consistent with the ups and downs that have gone on during the last two months. I never thought this was going to be easy and that the Mets would run away with it.

Your team is something else, I’ll tell you that. And while I think you’re due for at least one more little stretch of pull-your-hair-out baseball, I know the Phils won’t die easily. But the Mets have shown me plenty of moxy and guts over the last 2 and a half months, and a good share of it in this current month as well.

So no, no icky feeling here. Just the same anxiety I’m sure you all are feeling as well.

It should be a fun race to watch – all the way to the finish line.

  6. BREW CREW Says:

Brett must have hit his wife extra hard before the game to get that needed energy.

  7. Estebomb Says:

    @ Georgie
Not quite a sellout, I believe it was about 39,000.

    @ Mike T.
5,000 more would have been nice. I could have also done without the jackasses doing Eagles chants around me. I’m a huge Eagles fan but come on guys, the Phils are dominating in a huge game, this isn’t the place for that crap.

Besides those idiots though, it was a great atmosphere and a great night to be at the ballpark. Myers was phenomenal. I got to see Cole at yesterday’s game too so a pretty awesome weekend for me. Great to be on top of the Wild Card! Now let’s grab that division!

  8. anthony Says:

    CHOOOO CHOOOO!!

    all aboard the bandwagon!!

  9. christopher Says:

wow, that wasn’t a sell out? the place looked completely packed on TV. the game i was at yesterday, that was a sell out, had a decent amount of empty seats in the highest levels.

either way, great crowd, they had a ton of energy from the word go.

  10. dan Says:

Estebomb, I think it was actually a sellout or very close, but since it was rescheduled, some people who bought tickets probably couldn’t go. They probably sold close to all the tickets even though the attendance didn’t show it.

  11. NEPA Says:

ESPN has the stadium listed as somewhere around 92% full, which is like 39K-40K.

  12. Estebomb Says:

Official scoreboard “Guess the attendance!” game said 39,000. Maybe they should combine this with the ice cream shuffle.

Aw, a Brewers fan came out of nowhere, how quaint! How’d ya feel about Zambrano owning the Astros in your stadium Brew Crew?

  13. Georgie Says:

Hey, Anthony, it’s our bandwagon, and we’ll jump on or off whenever we damned well please.

  14. Phils2008 Says:

We just need to keep it up!! 2008 YGB!!!!!

  15. Manny Says:

Estebomb, I always tell the “fans” doing the E-A-G-L-E-S chant to SHUT UP. It really pisses me off, you have no idea.

  16. Georgie Says:

Seriously, the Phils just played their asses off, that’s rude to do the Eagles chant at CBP.

  17. SJ Mike Says:

Generally the Eagles chant pops up when they’re doing poorly. I heard the Eagles chant through the TV broadcast in the 8th inning or so. Annoyed me too.

I know it annoys the players. They’ve said so in many interviews.

  18. Fran Says:

I was down there for both games today.

#1 Why werent they sell outs, Come on people biggest games of the year.

#2 2nd game was A LOT more electric

#3 Rally Towels DO make a difference

#4 Pat the bat hit an absolute BOMB

#5 Myers is sick nasty. He’s our Ace right now no questions asked

#6 Howard has a legit shot at MVP

  19. Phil Says:

I worked tonight…missed both games but was peeking at my cell phone the whole time to see who was winning. I think we woulda won today even if we faced Sabathia.

  20. Paul Says:

Myers should be eligible for comeback player for what he’s done since his demotion.

Well done Brett and the rest of the Phils!

  21. MikeB Says:

Howard has to bring that batting average up as high as he can before the end of the year before he will have any chance at the N.L. MVP.

  22. Sam Says:

Howard needs to throw some nice pleasant big numbers up there during his last few games…if he can get to 140 or so rbis, and maybe like 47 or 48 home runs, I bet he gets it

  23. Can You Say October Fever? The Phillies Sweep the Brewers!!! | Phrankly Philly Says:

  24. Johnny Says:

It figures that the fightins start playin up to their potential AS SOON as I move to Texas, leaving Philly for the first time in 26 years

but i love these guys too much to be mad haha GREAT WIN!!!

It was great to see Burrell not just hit his bomb, but also the RBI single and the walk!!!!

  25. Johnny Says:

speaking of eagles chants … one night i was walkin home from work right when Prince Charles was visiting philly for the first time or something and right about broad and pine, there he was going to a theater and was welcomed by about 150 duders and a rousing Eagles chant.

i laughed my ass off the whole way home.

  26. J-Man Says:

Man what a huge win this was tonight tom complete the sweep…Now we need to take care of business against teams like the Braves and Nats and not lose 2 outta 3 against those team like we did not too long ago against the Nats, those 2 teams seem like their ready to do all they can to ruin teams playoffs hopes.

  27. Rob Cowie Says:

Plenty of season left to declare playoffs. But, if they do make it some lucky fans will be chilling with phillies nation at all home playoff games.

    (Insert hint at next giveaways)

    Count on it.

  28. Mike D. Says:

How many more you think they have to win to get in? 9-3? 8-4? Hopefully they don’t get complacent now.

  29. jeff Says:

2 games. The Mets won’t win a thing down the stretch I can feel it.

  30. Anth Says:

Feels good, lets keep it going, we just need to get in! We can beat the Cubs in a 5 or 7 gamer, same with the Mets, and Dodgers, along with the Brew Crew we are still THE TEAM TO BEAT!

  31. Joe Says:

What Mets Fan is skipping over is that his team plays 14 games in 14 days, and we only play 12. That should give him pause.

  32. Meghan Says:

Hmm… most of you are sining a much different tune than Thursday morning when you were waving the white flag about this season before the Brewers series even started! Glad I was on the right side of things!!

  33. Joe Says:

Post from metsblog.com about the many mets fans begging the site admin to take down the magic number picture from the site:

“Clearly posting a magic number has no bearing on what happens. However, let’s be realistic about it, the Phantic is way too blurred out. At this point he should be right behind Mr. Met with piano wire in hand.”

  34. Mike D. Says:

I’m concerned over who is throwing on Wednesday. I’m going go out on a limb and say I would start Eaton. He’s made two starts vs. the Braves this year and won both 7-3 and 6-3. Kendrick stinks and Moyer and Hamels are throwing in the other games, so Happ would be starting 3 straight lefties.

  35. Phil Says:

Did anyone read the article on phillies.com about the Phillies in pursuit of Sabathia. I do not believe that at all.

  36. Julie Says:

Yeah, I read it Phil. It looks like the writer was trying to make any possible connection with the Phils and Sabathia. There’s no way we can afford him – it was just to get our hopes up like the philly media did with Manny Ramirez. Besides, I find it hard to believe that CC would choose spending time with his old pal Charlie over a truck load of money in LA or NY.

  37. Phil Says:

The only thing I can see is if the Phillies offered 20 million and the Yankees offered 21 million with the same amount of years. I think he’d want to stay in the NL because he hits and he does really like Charlie. Chances are the Phillies FO isn’t throwing out that kind of money for Sabathia, but god would it make us the best team in baseball.

  38. mikemike Says:

Please we are all phillies fans. don’t belittle yourself and believe that writers stupid article. First of all does anyone think that Sabathia will settle for less than Santana. the bidding will start at twenty five million.I have heard rumors that the mets will try to trade beltran to the dodgers, and will take his money to sign cc Sabathia and rodruiz there payroll was increased to one hundred and seventy million. With there new stadium.

  39. Johnny Says:

As good as CC is … and cy young or not … even if the FO was willing to make an offer … I just want to remind everyone of Freddie Garcia.

  40. mikemike Says:

Johnny Says Just what Giles or Montgomery would say not to spend money.
