Against Sabathia, It’s Spray Or Die
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Thu, October 02, 2008 01:09 PM
Tonight is CC Sabathia night for the Phillies offense. Here are some introductory numbers on the Brewers ace:
- He never threw less than 91 pitches in a game this season.
- In his first game as a Brewer, he walked five. In the 16 starts after that, he walked 20.
- In only one of his 17 Brewer starts was he not able to finish the sixth inning.
- His totals as a Brewer are amazing — 11-2, 1.65 ERA, 128 K, 25 BB. That’s a K:BB ratio of 5:1. Insane.
Is there a way to beat him? Well, Sabathia doesn’t walk guys. He throws strikes, leading to a lot of strikeouts or ground outs. He does let up a couple hits per game, so it’s best to be a little aggresive, get your bat out there, try to poke it through or bloop it in. Take it from professional hitter Micah Owings, who beat Sabathia with a pinch-hit single earlier in September:
“I’d never faced him before. I tried to put something out there, and I got the hit. I was fortunate enough to get a little piece of it and sneak it over Prince’s head.”
Okay, so Micah Owings isn’t going to be the voice that wins it for the Phils. But against Sabathia, you can’t quite wait for your pitch. You have to go after it, find any way to get the ball into the outfield. I could see Jayson Werth stealing a hit this way, and I can definitely see Shane Victorino dropping something in. But one thing the Phils cannot do is swing for the fences — he just doesn’t pitch that high. If the Phils stay low, attack and spray, they can beat Sabathia. At least get two or three runs. Maybe, just maybe, that would be enough.

the answer to the question of how to beat sabathia is to PLAY SMALL BALL!!! however, this is obviously not the strength of the phillies team. key players in the game tonight : Jayson Werth (kills lefties), J-Roll (needs to get on base and steal bases), Shane Victorino (same as J-Roll).

I agree, Werth has looked bad lately (with the exception of his HR on Saturday). We need a big game out of J-Roll as well.

is it me or does Werth strike out on a lot of fastballs?
Victorino and rollins need to bunt for hits…Three reasons
1) Prince=fatest Vegatarian ever
2) Sabbathia = Not the smallest guy in the world
3) Weeks = His fielding is on par with David Bell

werth needs to stop thinking at the plate…get jroll on and hit and run so werth has to swing at the 1st pitch fastball…otherwise he takes it for a strike and is guessing the rest of the ab

Gallardo gets a lot of movement on that high-heater he throws.. I think twice Werth tipped them back into the catcher’s mitt for the 3rd strike.. he’s just missing, its not like was getting overpowered, or overmatched..
I think he is a key guy today.. maybe batting the 3-hole vs. the lefty???
that would be ballsy to do especially cause it won’t be the popular move, and most fans would want to kill Manuel for making that move since Werth didn’t look good yesterday.. but breaking the LH’s up against Sabathia is something he should really consider in my opinion

Maybe the Phils need to pull out some film and see how the Red Sox beat CC Sabathia in the playoffs last year because they beat him twice.

i’m tired of people just giving this win to the Brewer’s. C.C. beat up on the lowsy N.L. Central and now people are putting him into the Hall of FAme. When he faced a good team, (the Cubs), he lost both times. The Phils CAN beat him and i think they will and maybe then ESPN will eat their words. E-A-G-L-E-S PHILLIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Speaking of getting lucky yesterday… any of the Mets players shoot a hole-in-one while on the golf course???
October 2nd, 2008 at 2:07 pm
doubt we hear anything from that chump again
October 2nd, 2008 at 2:07 pm
Another benefit with a lefty pitching is Victorino will bat right handed, where he is a much better power hitter
October 2nd, 2008 at 2:07 pm
I’d agree with that … the high fastball eats him up.. he POUNDS breaking balls though.. and I think if they start him next year, for the full season.. he puts up 30 HR and 80-90 RBI

Minaya gets another 4 years???? Classic Muts move
October 2nd, 2008 at 2:09 pm
I can see 30 shots of Jack for Werth.
October 2nd, 2008 at 2:10 pm
METS RULE is just saying we got lucky because he only read the box score, and didn’t see that the Phillies dominated that gme from start to finish..
The TV in his parent’s basement doesn’t get TBS

SHOT OF JACK.. for a Home Run…. GOOD CALL!!! never heard that one before but I like it.
Him and Victorino are crucial in this game.. batting RH.. both can go yard. Vic has HR off of Johan Santana and Randy Johnson this year, two of the toughest Lefty pitchers in the game (Yes. randy johnson is still nasty… 96mph sliders coming at you are not easy to hit)

I’m really racking my memory hear but if it serves me correctly (usually doesnt’), we were fairly successful against CC last year (maybe two years, idk). We were winning most the game until Lieber blew up in the 6th. But my point being these guys were hitting Sabathia and if they can just stay calm, do what they know how to do. We should be all gooood. Go Phils!

I would put Werth in the 3 hole and break up Utley and Howard. Just in case they bring in a lefty specialist to face Utley, then Werth will get an AB against a lefty before the lefty faces Howard. Then again, if Sabathia goes 9, it doesn’t really matter about a lefty specialist.
October 2nd, 2008 at 2:38 pm
Pat the Bat WILL hit a HR today! I think Burrell is just as key to the Phillies winning if not more than Jayson and Shane.
I think we’ll also get a surprise hit from Pete Happy as well! For some reason he seems to get hits when you least expect him to?
October 2nd, 2008 at 2:45 pm
All will be looking for a steady and calm Myers to pitch a perfect first inning. What spin will the Phillies put on the game in the bottom of the first? What will the smart lefty Sabathia look like on three days of rest again? I’m going but I don’t see the silver lining in this game. I think we’ll have a better chance against Suppan and Bush. I hope the players are going up tonight with a better attitude than me. Maybe the boys will see his consistent pitches in the box and punch a few. I hope the Baseball Gods smile on us tonight.
October 2nd, 2008 at 2:53 pm
Werth misses more fast balls than anyone.
What’s the latest news on Burrell? He was pinch hit for yesterday.
October 2nd, 2008 at 2:57 pm
Brewers just announced that Dave Bush will pitch game 3 against Moyer.
October 2nd, 2008 at 3:25 pm
Good news for the phils
October 2nd, 2008 at 3:38 pm
I listened to Amaro Jr get interviewed on 610 earlier and it sounds like Pat is good to go.
October 2nd, 2008 at 5:10 pm
Let’s hope that either Utley or Howard can do something against CC, since Charlie’s got them back-to-back in the lineup for some reason…
Also, maybe I’m an optimist, but one has to think that CC’s pitching for the 4th time in a row on 3 days rest will take its toll at some point. Not that he won’t throw a good game, but between the travel, cooler weather and fatigue, I’d have to think he gives up a few runs.
Of course, is Myers can’t get his act together we’re sunk anyway, but let’s hope…
