Big-Game Moyer Can Add To Resume
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Sat, October 04, 2008 10:30 AM
When Charlie Manuel set his playoff rotation, it was calming to see Jamie Moyer pitching the first game in Milwaukee. Having the veteran leader of the staff opening in a hostile environment seemed perfect. But now that game three could also be the series clincher for the Phils, somehow it’s even more perfect.
Moyer has been nothing short of a rock this season. And he has come up big in big spots. He was the one who clinched both NL East titles with fine pitching performances. He was the one who stopped losing streaks dead in their tracks. Some may call him an ace — I call him the necessity.
Big-game Moyer is 4-0 with a 3.26 ERA in September. And for your comfort, he’s 1-0 with a respectable 3.09 ERA against Milwaukee this season.
Todd Zolecki spoke to Moyer about his preparation and thought process going into this big game. To Moyer, it’s not a big game at all:
“In spring training you’re trying to get your feet underneath you. As you go through the druthers of the season, the positive and negatives of the season, you try to build from that. So when you do get into the postseason, you don’t try to turn it into something that it’s really not. It’s still a baseball game. That game tomorrow is no different than the game two months ago or three months ago.”
Zolecki also cajoled Moyer into recalling a time when he didn’t follow his philosophy — the last game before the 1993 All-Star break.
Moyer had Baltimore’s final start before the all-star break. But because the Orioles hosted the All-Star Game, Moyer got caught up in the pregame hoopla in the clubhouse. He went out and the Chicago White Sox rocked him.
Impressive. A — That Zolecki got that out of Moyer. B — That Moyer can recall that one game. C — That he looks back at that game and still shakes his head.
This guy is the right guy for tonight. The attitude, the experience, the drive. And then there’s the pitching — I’m confident that if Moyer does his thing (low fastballs, hitting corners, mixing his changeup, making batters swing) he’ll be incredibly productive on the mound. The Phils need him to set a tone tonight, and they need the bats to follow him. Just as they needed it last Saturday. And Sept. 30, 2007. And so on.

Jamie Moyer:
Line against Brew Crew in April:
6 IP, 8 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 4 SO
Line against Brew Crew in September:
5.2 IP, 3 ER, 4 H, 1 BB, 5 SO
This is a young lineup, fastball hitters, who Moyer can get to swing out in front. The type of lineup Moyer usually has success against.
I’m confident as well. GO PHILLIES!

Does anyone know if Moyer has mentioned anything about retirement after this year?
“I haven’t been there, so I don’t know what that excitement is, I don’t know what that feeling is,” Moyer said about playing in the World Series. “If we don’t win tomorrow, or win this series, I’ll never know.”

I think the only things not on his resume are a Cy Young, and a Championship, and he has a chance for the latter if the Phils can continue their winning ways.
I’d like to see the offense show up a little more, but if we can continue to get pitching performances like the first two games, 3 runs will do it.

I am not even a bit concerned if the Phils do somehow happen to lose this game. The lumber has not yet come to play – (the Phils big men vs Bush favors a high scoring game). I would love to see a home game 5 – game 2 was more frenzied than the clincher last year and this year! Game 5 would be amazing I’m sure.
Question about the NLCS – I’m trying to plan out how to split up my tickets and I need help
If we play the Dodgers;
Home Games;
(1) October 9th – Thursday
(2) October 10th – Friday
Away Games;
(3) October 12th – Sat
(4) October 13th – Sun
Home;
(5) October 15th – Wed
This is where I am not sure what happens next. Games 6 & 7 are on the 17th and 18th – are they away? If 6 is away, is 7 home? No travel day?
The same could be said for the WS. Games 3, 4 & 5 are back to back to back. Where are the travel dates? Games 6 & 7 are back to back as well.
Anyone know?

And the last thing he said to me, “Rock,” he said, “sometime when the team is up against it and the breaks are beating the boys, tell them to go out there with all they’ve got and win just one for the Gipper.

Brooks, Oct. 12 is Sunday (not Sat.) and Oct. 13 is Monday (not Sun.)
If the Phillies and Dodgers make it,
Game 5, October 15, would be an AWAY game.
Games 6 & 7 would be HOME games for the Phillies.

2 Home
3 Away
2 Home

Thanks Manny – I assume the WS will be the same layout (2 – 3 – 2). In the NLCS, off day between games 4 & 5 then between 5 & 6 (travel day).

What you have to beat the brewers first.

Not a problem redsoxfan.. this WILL happen!

It’s gonna be tough playing em tonight because they play good ball at home.

I see no reason to be concerned at all about the Brewers. Brett gave them every opportunity to hit him big in the first inning and they did not come up.
CC was KA-KA – the man was rattled bigtime. We took their best shot and slapped him silly. And, the Phils lumber has not come to play yet. No problem as the other kids are tearing it up. How many LOB’s did the Phils have in game 2????

Our bats better come alive tonight vs. Dave Bush.

The offense of the Phillies team nucleus is made up of complimentary players that surround and strengthen its center, and the center is made of the few who are the best at what they do. Players who are membranes of the nucleus are the lesser talented ones, but sometimes they will fling caution to the wind and their abilities will loam large. They will become the ones that we will say later, but if it wasn’t for them we would not have won. Their shadow will be longer in these October days and the less than mighty will inspire the mighty. The mighty will look on, and think, he has played well. He has reached that area where his light is the brightest. I have had that light shone on me many times. But I have not yet participated in this time of greatness, no, not this struggle of one on one in this last drive. But I do know about this path. I have heard about it from others who have been there. How at the end of the long drive home, the door opens, and at last one can stretch, relax and enjoy the sweetness of the air mingling in your thoughts. And the mighty will become daunted by this, and the strength that was always there will rise, and they will thrash upon the landscape with their mighty bats. The nucleus will rotate in a fusion that explodes on the field. It will shake the rafters of the home house where they live in. And the endless white cotton waves of surf will splash across the outlining green fields. The brightness of the lights will again shine upon those few, and their seconds will look on with pleasing smiles, knowing that their red striped giants have awoken.

hahaha, LH – I made it about 1/4 down your post and had no idea what the hell you were talking about. I know it was something about science and nuclei.

NEPA I couln’t make any sense of what he was saying either. Maybe someone can help us understand what he meant. Today mets said mistakes they made will be looked at and corrected. Next years team will be unbelievable good with rod, fuentes,burrell,and cc added
October 4th, 2008 at 3:32 pm
I think LH is saying that the “smaller bats” like Vic will wake up the “bigger bats “like Howard by leading by example, at least that’s what I got out of it.

Wow Iread it six times, am I bored , and still can’t see that georgie
October 4th, 2008 at 3:45 pm
Metsrule, you’re going to get a cryogenically restored Ted Williams too, right? Didn’t the Mets say that they were going look at the mistakes they made and correct them last year? The best you could do was an ace and a right fielder with a broken brain. What makes you think that you will get every free agent on the market? K-Rod and CC have had great postseasons so far. Good luck.
ps. You only get Burrell if you can pull my dead body off the contract at the press conference.
