Phillies Now Hold City’s Fate
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Fri, October 17, 2008 11:44 AM
For most of the season, the Phillies have been winning for their fans, their baseball-crazed fans who could tell you about Lou Marson, or could tell you that the Phils once had Brad Harman on the 25-man roster.
Sometime in the postseason, maybe after Shane Victorino clobbered CC Sabathia’s Brewers career, things shifted. More Philadelphians involved themselves in the Phils’ run, the media started jumping on the team, Phillie fever had taken hold.
And now that the Phillies are in the World Series, the city and surrounding areas are clearly red. Now it’s cool to be a Phillie fan again. Now the fairweathers come out, the bandwagoners, the students, etc. Heck, I saw this myself when living in Boston in 2004. Once the Sox took down the Yankees, everyone was a Red Sox fan.
I could take the low road and say this is annoying, that, ‘oh, now EVERYONE likes the Phillies.’ But I won’t, because there’s more at play here — there’s a reason for this hysteria:
The Phillies are now playing for the city.
Face it, we know there’s this “curse,” or whatever you want to call it, hanging over our heads. There’s that 1983 Sixers title staring us right in the pupils.
And beyond that we see Ryne Sandberg being shipped to Chicago; Pelle Lindberg’s tragic death; Charles Barkley being traded for lunch money; Jerome Brown’s tragic death; Joe Carter’s leap along the first-base line; Sergei Federov netting another goal for the Red Wings; Robert Horry sinking a jump shot; Donovan McNabb throwing an interception, and another interception, and another interception, and another interception.
Twenty-five years of turmoil, dejection, heartbreak, anger, sadness. Countless names — Steve Jeltz, Todd Pinkston — that did nothing … countless names — Eric Lindros, Allen Iverson — that should’ve done so much more.
Suddenly it’s the Phillies turn to once again attempt and break the cycle. It’s their turn to hand a city its reward for living through the madness. Add in years of heinous crimes, political storm clouds and, yes, being really ugly and fat, and you have a city itching, begging, pleading for a win.
In fact, one of our own said it best:
“We need just one victory, and we’ll be alright”
— Todd Rundgren
Suddenly the Phillies need that one victory, a World Series title. You can bet if they do that, this town will be alright.

I can only speak for myself, of course…but it is annoying to stand up for my team all year long, and for those same people NOW to tell me how they knew this team was good enough. It’s not worth fighting with them about it, because I know their fans they just weren’t as dedicated as I was. I tell them I saved them a spot on the bus, but the seats all went to those of us who were in it for the whole ride.
GO PHILS!!!!!!

I am a die hard phillies fan, have been since i was about 8 years old and I am from upstate NY. Spent most of my summer is Ocean City NJ and thats how i became a Phillies fan. But now all the harassing I have received on college campus and in highschool about being a Phillies Fan is sooooo worth it. I would love to be in Philly right now, my true friends that I have never even met. I would love to be dancing in the streets after they knocked off the brew crew and the dodgers. But I am holding it down up here on the UAlbany Campus. One thing I do know is if the Phillies win that World Series ring, I will definitely be down there in Philly for that parade, and I will be dancing in the streets. LETS GO PHILLIES!!!

Wait… hasn’t everyone had full confidence in this team all year??? What about the experts that picked the Dodgers to beat us on ESPN… surely 9-of-10 experts can’t be wrong can they?
I personally, got pissed off LOTS of times throughout this year getting into lengthy debates with people about why this team isn’t “DONE” numerous times.. and why Ruiz’s defense was more important than his 8-hole bat… why Gillick does a nice job with adding “pieces” to the roster, etc..
but now its to a point where we are all fans, and people just voice their frustrations in different ways.. I wish that some people wouldn’t have jumped off the bridge so many times in August-Sept.. but that happens.. lets just sit back and enjoy the ride right now, because regardless of who we play.. this Phillies team has a GREAT chance to win this year.. 4 more wins!!
October 17th, 2008 at 12:40 pm
Most if not all of us on here have been there for not just this whole year but many many years….Yes its annoying all these Johnny-come-lately types jumping on but we know we’ve been here forever. Let them have their fun.
This is why we are fans for this chance to watch our team reach the ultimate goal. We are 4 wins from the prize. Let’s not get distracted by the so called experts who undoubtedly will be all over the AL champ. Let’s enjoy this for what it is.
As a 33 year old fan of this city’s sports teams I still feel Joe Carter, the Tampa Game at the Vet, the Lakers, and so many more but this time it feels different. Not sure if its because I’m a baseball guy first or that this team just seems to have “it”.
I can’t wait for Wednesday! I’m ready I know the team and the town are ready. Let’s Go!!!!
Does it feel different to anyone else this time? I hope its not just me!
October 17th, 2008 at 12:48 pm
It definitely feels different.. with every other team I’ve been so happy that they GOT THERE… I really was happy and excited the other night, but I know that they have a legit chance to win this World Series.. so I’m saving all my energy..
I’ve been saying my entire 25-year-long life how I’d love for ANY of the Philly teams to win a Championship, but that I couldn’t even imagine if it was the Phillies… so I’m just sitting on the edge of my seat waiting to see if our boys can bring it home this year and these guys will go down as hereos forever in this town!!!

I leave LA this evening. Strangely enough, when I booked this trip two months ago I had no idea that the Phillies would be entering the World Series after having just dismantled the Dodgers — and that I would be there to see it. As irony would have it, on my list of appointments today is with the company that produces the NLCS, ALCS and World Series DVDs for MLB. The meeting is unrelated to that but I’ve had some email chatter with them these past few days leading up telling them that I’m a Phillies fan and just giving them insight in our team from a fan’s perspective. I couldn’t stress enough that if the Phillies won this series, it would change the entire make-up of the city. The local economy, the tourism sector, everything would change if this team could just pull this out. I don’t think they quite understood.
I’m on my way back east tonight. I’ve never wanted to be home more in my life.
October 17th, 2008 at 1:16 pm
I went to Modells yesterday to purchase my NL champs shirt and you should see all the people buying Phils stuff, Jerseys, regular hats, and other non-NL champ related Phillies gear. I am glad to see people excited, however it is a little frustrating.
You can tell the fans who have jumped on board when you talk about not being able to sleep after the win even though i had to get up at 5am, or about tears running down my face when Ruiz caught that ball and get strange looks like how could a baseball game do so much to you emotionally.
October 17th, 2008 at 1:18 pm
Remembering Carters HR when I was in 10th grade is how I can get emotional. I dont mind all the new fans I just wish they wouldn’t get the World Series tickets and go as an expensive social gathering while I watch at home.
October 17th, 2008 at 1:18 pm
i agree don, something different about this team then the other teams that have teased us to this point…
instead of “Ya just gotta believe” since that is a mets thing…make it simple
“WE BELIEVE”
October 17th, 2008 at 1:26 pm
Joe Carter made it difficult when I was 9. I just couldn’t understand why he’d be “so mean.”
Don said that you’d want at least one of the Philly teams. I’ve said the same before myself, however, baseball is my number one that I root for, more specifically the Phils. I love the Phils.
Eagles come in second, Flyers in third, Sixers in dead last since I don’t like basketball.
But what I would give to see the Phils win the World Series. That would make it all ok.
I love wearing my Phillies hoodie all over the place. I have 4 Phillies hats, 2 jerseys (blank pinstripe and red batting), tons of t-shirts, etc. I love wearing it up in North Jersey.
October 17th, 2008 at 1:27 pm
they said that the average ticket price for the WS is like $600… and somebody paid $5,000 for a ticket behind the Phillies dugout..
THAT is the kinda thing that pisses me off… the regular fans get the nosebleeds… if they’re lucky
But I like watching the game at home anyway, and being able to actually pay attention to it
October 17th, 2008 at 1:28 pm
“Ya Gotta Believe” is a Mets thing however it was coined by Tugger when he was with the Mets so we can still use it.
I feel differently this year, all of the other years recently I have been happy the team got there, and at the beginning of the Post Season this year I thought I would just be happy if they got to the WS. As soon as Ruiz caught the ball all I could think of was “4 more wins” vice just thinking I am glad they got here.
October 17th, 2008 at 1:30 pm
Don M…Where is whats his name with the Secret trades???????
Anyone who has posted here clearly doesnt fall in to the “fairweather fan” section.
Wednesday can not come soon enough
October 17th, 2008 at 1:33 pm
Don M. While I agree that the price of tickets is very expensive. And after paying 300 bucks for NLDS AND NLCS Tickets, It was very well worth it. The feeling that you get of attending a playoff game is spectacular. After going this year, both Phillies wins, the crowd is just so much different than any regular season game. I was there when they clinched it and the crowd had nothing compared to a playoff crowd. The chants of BEAT LA was so loud the stadium was shaking and after the game you soak in the euphoric moment of high fiving phillies chants. It was awesome. I feel that the system to get the tickets is flawed since anybody can buy them. IF you look at ebay and stubhub, these guys just signed up for the tickets cause they wanted to sell them for 3X and 4X thier worth. If they sold them at the stadium first come first serve then it would be fairer in my opinion.
Needless to say if anyone has tickets i would be willing to pay 300 per ticket! lol
October 17th, 2008 at 1:33 pm
Eb that is why I am so glad I found this site around Spring Training.
I will not get WS tickets but will anybody here be tailgating for the game Saturday, I am contemplating going down to tailgate and taking the train home in time to watch the game.
October 17th, 2008 at 1:35 pm
I can’t afford that much for tickets. Unless I got them officially through the lottery drawing, I can’t afford them. Don’t make nearly that much to do so.
October 17th, 2008 at 1:45 pm
Yea i’d pay $300… but $600!!
Standing Room were being listed at $450.. that is retarded.. why not by yourself a big tv and surround sound or something that you’ll have for more than just one night with the amount people are paying for these tickets.
$5,000 for ONE SEAT behind the Phillies dugout.. wouldn’t you rather get season tickets in 2009 ???
People are nuts
October 17th, 2008 at 1:46 pm
People can charge it because there are people who will pay it.
October 17th, 2008 at 1:49 pm
The Biggest Problem I have with this website…
IT’S TOO ADDICTING!!!!
October 17th, 2008 at 1:49 pm
I wonder if Gillick is following all the trade talks going on now. Mets are going after fuentes first and are talking to cubs about trading beltan .for cubs center fielder and lee and not picking up degado contract and braves are heavy into peavy talks, interesting.
October 17th, 2008 at 1:52 pm
Look for World Series tickets you have to work with a broker this time around. Go to http://broadwaykings.com. They sell ALL the same seats you see on all the other national sites but they sell them cheaper. Local company who is EASY to work with. Use the Discount Code “1980″ Remember all prices appear the same on all sites until you check out and that is where you see the difference.
They can also be reached on AOL at Broadwaykings for IM
You can also call them at (888) 688 8499
October 17th, 2008 at 1:53 pm
I have stood by the phillies forever, but this group has a different feel. Hopefully, a WS feel, but I was one that argued decisions and situations throughout the year that I felt had not been done properly. Never jumping off the wagon for a second, but at times just frustration that we were wasting the talents of this core team. But I have to say Don M., you were a calming influence, one that always stood up and said be happy to have competitiveness, if we don’t win, we don’t win atleast we have a decent product out there. I think that is a good way to look at it. Now, I can’t say I truly feel like that, but I see what you were saying then, I understand your viewpoint. But now we are in the big dance and maybe we need some of the fair weather fans to be behind this team to push them over the line, so let’s do this everyone!!
Let’s go Phillllssss!!! 4 More!!4 More!!!
October 17th, 2008 at 1:54 pm
Robbi, I echo what you said. Actually did ok with Stubhub for Game 2….took my 11 yr old son. Wanted him to have the experience of what it’s like to see passionate October baseball in person. It was well worth the 350 I paid for 2 tix. And I told him that that was it cause no way I could afford what Series tix are going for. So glad they won that game…..not just because we needed that win but because I wanted my son to be part of all of that winning excitement after the game. I didn’t get a lottery draw, so unless I can get tix at a reasonable price, which is doubtful, we will be watching (with the sound down….can’t stand Buck and Mccarver) at home. GO PHILLIES!!!
October 17th, 2008 at 1:54 pm
Gillick doesn’t have to worry about that stuff right now, they can only talk amongst themselves for now, they are not allowed to talk to anyone or teams until after the Series. Right?
October 17th, 2008 at 1:55 pm
I love sports but five grand for a ticket is nuts. take that money and you can go on a vacation for the family .There is a lot you could do. But the only people who do that have a lot of money or they are crazy. When I saw a series game in the sixties my uncle bitched because when we got off the train they were charging three dollars for the bus to yankee stadium I Was a kid but my uncle went nuts when they said three dollars.
October 17th, 2008 at 1:55 pm
Don M , I’m getting NOTHING done at work right now because of this site. Thanks a lot, Tim. See what you have done!!
October 17th, 2008 at 1:58 pm
Don M:
I am with you there this is going to get me in trouble at work one of these days.
MikeMike: I saw Peavy is available, he would be a decent pickup, he has a no trade claus so unless no one offers him comparable money he will not go to the mets.
The NL East teams will be building there teams to beat the Phils.
October 17th, 2008 at 1:59 pm
crap I just broke my rule and talked about next year.
October 17th, 2008 at 2:01 pm
Chuck 1210 (if you live in the area) and regular Fox (not HD) sync up pretty well most of the time.
October 17th, 2008 at 2:02 pm
Richie I don’t know but I saw it on espn about peavy and the braves. maybe you are right and I Misread it but it sounded like they wanted to get him done in the next couple of weeks. and not drag it on like minnesota did with Santana and get less than good value. if they do it now there is no competition from free agents. until free agency opens you don’t know what Sheets or C.C. or Lowe want. Peavy is sign for 4 more years
October 17th, 2008 at 2:03 pm
Yeah, RK, I did 1210 the last 2 games. Noticed it was way off on Monday but better synced on Wed. So much more rewarding with our guys.
October 17th, 2008 at 2:04 pm
You forgot Andy Reid’s watch breaking, which must have led to that awful clock management in that Super Bowl….
October 17th, 2008 at 2:09 pm
Not all of the true fans are in the nosebleeds! Right after I went to the Mets game on August 26th, after thinking all year this team would get here, I believed that we were going to the World Series after witnessing a game like that – I put down the deposit for a partial plan so I would get access to postseason tickets. And wouldn’t you know, when the postseason tickets arrived the best seats I had we’re for the World Series, and the game they gave me is on my 23rd birthday! So two die hard fans will be in 107 for game 3!
October 17th, 2008 at 2:11 pm
Richie,
I think, as others have said, that the majority of fans on this site are true die-hard fans!!… and I said earlier in the year, that only VERY recently have I stopped taking all Philadelphia sports so personally… T.O. wanting more money, etc.. Why the hell should we care, or hate players for stuff like that? The guy played hard when he was here..(thats for another blog though)
My whole point was that I’ve been a fan for long-enough that anything over .500 ball was considered a GOOD season.. and I’ve read enough stuff about the “business” side of sports now to know that its much easier for us to yell about they should increase the payroll, even if it means they lose money (when no business owner will or should be expected to do that..)
I got really pissed half-way through the season when people would bitch and complain about trying to build-for-the future, and their next post would be about how you have to win a World Series right now.. and trade Howard and Rollins if we didn’t win it this year, and release Madson and Ruiz because they suck, etc..
But I know that people just vent their frustrations different ways, and so I got over that… but I did have to listen to people calling me A METS FAN.. and telling me that I LOVE PAT GILLICK.. and that I DON’T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT BASEBALL… all because I thought our team was pretty damn good. and before the Brewers came into CBP and people were saying that this team was officially DONE.. I said “WHAT IF WE SWEEP THE BREWERS, ARE WE STILL DONE?”
All because you just never know what will happen… when the playoffs started I told everyone that we can easily beat any of the teams in the NL, but that we could also easily lose to any of the teams in the NL…. and I feel the same way about the Rays and RedSox.. I think we have as good a chance as ever to get the job done this year… an inexperienced Rays team, a banged-up RedSox… no Yankees, Angels, etc.. to deal with
Everything is lined up for us to have a great chance to get this done.. and unless they are eliminated, I expect them to win from here on out!!
“You Gotta Have Phaith!”
October 17th, 2008 at 2:11 pm
Chuck there are several stations that carry the Phils games. I live in Lansdale and 1440 is the station there however it was way off so you may just check the other stations to see if they are synched up.
October 17th, 2008 at 2:14 pm
yea but lots of those seats are the corporations that can afford the 81-games of a full-season ticket package.. they get first dibs at post-season and you have people going to games that couldn’t tell you a single thing about any players besides
Howard, Utley, Hamels… and now Victorino…. that is the kinda stuff that pisses me off, but its part of sports everywhere.. that is why they have this nice new stadium, and can afford to be around the top-10 in payroll and stuff.
so you take the good with the bad
October 17th, 2008 at 2:19 pm
If you bought standing room tickets from the Phils website they were 50/ ticket. I have 3 stnading rooms tickets for game 5 but i can not bring myself to sell them
October 17th, 2008 at 2:22 pm
Thanks, RK, I’ll search around. I’m in Newtown.
Nice story about the tickets, MP. I was at that Aug 26 game and should have done the same thing.
October 17th, 2008 at 2:24 pm
Without ripping anybody off Eb, what would you sell them for if you were going to sell?
October 17th, 2008 at 2:27 pm
Eb, i’ll be at game 5 in section 306 (obstruction capitol of CBP) but if you do go, i’ll buy you a beer!
October 17th, 2008 at 2:27 pm
Do it for Philly!!
October 17th, 2008 at 2:33 pm
EB how did you buy 3 SRO for game 5, did you win the ticket Lottery
October 17th, 2008 at 2:33 pm
EB let me know if you want to sell them, or just one even.
October 17th, 2008 at 2:36 pm
Well put Don.
October 17th, 2008 at 2:40 pm
Chuck – most unbelieveable game I was at during the regular season! The whole partial plan package plus postseason tickets is probably less expensive than what 2 seats are going for! Plus, my Dad’s been taking me to games since I was little, so gotta return the favor now that I’m working my first real job – we’ve both never been to any postseason games so to be actually going to a Phillies world series game is surreal.
I absolutely hate that everyone and their mother is jumping on the Victorino bandwagon! I’m glad for him because he is finally getting credit he deserves but he has been one of my favorites since we came here. And I’ll admit that I first notice him because we share 2/3 of a last name (TORINO!) but I was rockin’ a Vic shirt when they were few and far between lol

i hate to say i told PhilliesNation.com i told you so, but see my comments in the video section of this website in the Spring Training 2008 section.
Go Phillies and PhilliesNation!

October 17th, 2008 at 2:59 pm
Yeah, Victorino’s a special player and I saw that early on as well. Really glad he has gotten his shot. Werth’s another one that I really like and always have. These guys are a real upgrage over Rowand in my opinion.
What’s everybody’s opinion of Pat the Bat for next season. If he’s not resigned, which is unlikely, how about Dobbs in right and moving Werth to left? I like Jenkins but Dobbs has proven that he’s more of an everyday player.
October 17th, 2008 at 3:20 pm
I would like to see Pat back next year. I think he’s still got some good stuff left. It would just seem strange to not see Pat in a Phillies uniform next year.
Everyone has been speculating that Dobbs would move to LF if Pat leaves, which would be fine too. Dobbas has been such a great player, another one I’ve really liked, so I guess we’ll see what happens. I think Werth’s comfortable in RF, I def think he should stay there.
October 17th, 2008 at 3:29 pm
The more Dobbs hits, the less effective he is… He’s got the right approach as a pinch-hitter… very aggressive, but not overly aggressive.. so I think you leave him as your top pinch hitter and thats it.
I think Pat wants to stay.. and the Phillies would like to have him back.. BUT the reality of the situation is that in another 2-3 years, he will be almost unplayable in the OF just because his range will deminish that much more .. depending on what they do with Howard, they might feel that moving Burrell to 1st base in 2 years, and trading the Big Guy is the way to go.. so they need to be thinking a few years down the line this offseason.
If they can get Burrell for 3 years, and $36 M… they’ll probably do it.. if somebody offers him 5 and $50 in the American League, you can’t blame him for taking it, or the Phillies for letting him walk.
If it was a 4 year, $40 or so.. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Pat give a little bit of a hometown discount.. but if its a $10-15 M difference, I expect him to walk.
October 17th, 2008 at 3:36 pm
they are talkin DH vs. kazmir (if the rays win)…
i’m thinkin burrell! why not let dobber or bruntlett roam LF and let the Bat rest his legs for a game? probably a longshot but just wanted to test the idea on you guys…
October 17th, 2008 at 3:39 pm
Judging by this postseason, it really seems Burrell has some real clout amongst the clubhouse. The players really respect him and like him.
I’d have a feeling that if we let him walk, there would be something really missing, more then when people talked about Aaron Rowand.
And the thing is that Burrell seems like he genuinely wants to stay. Not one of those players that has gone from team to team. He truly wants to stay it seems.
October 17th, 2008 at 3:46 pm
Dobbs, not Bruntlett. Bruntlett’s ok for late in game but not for 4 ABs
October 17th, 2008 at 3:47 pm
Dobbs should DH against righties and Coste against lefties.
October 17th, 2008 at 3:57 pm
a big part of me agrees with my boy donny m… i like dobber off the bench… but i think being able to give 4 AB’s a game (either startin 3rd or DHing) is what the phils will ultimately go with…
October 17th, 2008 at 4:06 pm
Agreed. I also think that Taguichi should be left off the World Series and Lou Marson should be added. Taguichi has been given numerous chances to contribute and has given us nothing – both in now and during the regular season. Marson would be a good back up catcher, and if needed a right handed bat. At this point, anyone works better over Taguichi! He couldn’t even bunt a runner over. I know Marson could be viewed as risky, but he blasted a three run HR on the last game of the season. I know it might not count for much, but I have more faith in Marson than Taguichi.
October 17th, 2008 at 4:16 pm
MP, your thoughts count for everything!
October 17th, 2008 at 4:16 pm
Marson should have a shot. It’s a better risk than Taguchi. He has done absolutely nothing which is weird, cause he was a nice player for StL. In fact, when they got him I was kind of excited. But he has been a complete bust.
As far as DH:
Righties–either Dobbs, Stairs or Jenkins (Stairs might be better as PH late in game)
Lefties–Coste
October 17th, 2008 at 4:20 pm
Replacing Taguchi with Marson is a BRILLIANT move.
I don’t understand why Taguchi is getting so much action in the playoffs!! Coste could be pinch-hitting instead of him but Coste isn’t being used because he’s the only catcher on the bench. Bring Marson so that we can have an extra catcher and let Coste pinch-hit (especially convenient for the 5th-8th innings).
October 17th, 2008 at 4:22 pm
No Chance they put Marson on the World Series roster over Taguchi… yes, he failed to get a bunt down.. but also remember that it took probably the best catch of the series by Ethier to rob Taguchi of RBIs the other night.
I’d imagine they’ll use Stairs as a DH against RHP, and Coste as a DH against LHP… since you can’t move the DH around, might as well let Stairs swing for the fences a few times.. and use Dobbs when you need your best pinch hitter to maybe work the count, or get on base instead of just trying to go deep with something.
Interesting point about Burrell DH-ing.. I didn’t really even think about that, but that is a way to gaurantee he gets maximum at-bats.. GREAT IDEA!!!!
Using Bruntlett out the of 9-hole and Burrell as the DH is probably a good way to go! If you use Coste, you then don’t have a backup catcher (unless you keep Marson up, with his 1 game of experience)… You wouldn’t need to make a defensive move late in the game, and you’d have Dobbs, Stairs, Jenkins, Taguchi, Coste all on the bench still.. same as usual
October 17th, 2008 at 4:25 pm
If Coste DHs, they have to put Marson in as the backup catcher. No ifs ands or buts. They have to have a backup catcher and the game coste DHs he cannot be the backup catcher or we lose the DH.
October 17th, 2008 at 4:33 pm
Lets just let Myers be our DH
October 17th, 2008 at 4:35 pm
That would be a riot. Could you imagine what the AL teams would think if Myers was the DH?
But seriously, Marson needs to be on this roster. If Coste is the righy DH then he would have to be.
October 17th, 2008 at 4:39 pm
I really don’t think they’ll use Coste as the DH. Burrell DH, and Bruntlett in LF def makes the most sense to me for games against a LHP
And Burrell in LF, Stairs as the DH against Sheilds, or any RHP
October 17th, 2008 at 4:41 pm
Don M, I agree with everything you said except about Taguchi. Ok, so he almost had a hit (and RBIs) until Ethier miraculously caught it. But it was a weak bloop hit not a drive down the line. I still say having Marson is the best approach and that gives Chollie more options with catcher, PH, and DH.
October 17th, 2008 at 4:44 pm
Hey guys, this is kind of nice……having an intelligent discussion about the Phillies without RedSoxFan in here acting like an ass.

I think we’ll get better results having Burrell start in LF and Coste as DH against rightys. Bruntlett is okay, but not for 4, 5 ABs. I’m not comfortable with starting anyone but Pat in LF. Totally agree it gives Charlie more options. I think its unlikly that Pat won start and it would have to be Coste. The more I think about it, the more I really think it probably will be Marson over Taguichi.

As much as I Hate to say this. if burrell is the DH then I would put jenkins or stairs in left and then go for the defense. And use bruntlett. Can’t believe I am saying to use jenkins but want the offense. Especially if howard still isn’t hitting.

Can a DH go into the field. I Thought if you are DH you couldn’t play the field not sure. don’t see much american league.

The Phillies site said something about Howard as a possible DH and Dobbs being on 1st base.
What do you think? I kinda like Dobbs as a pinch-hitter…but we’ll see. Time to make pretty big decisions…

If howard was DH, we could use stairs I Think he has played first base before.

Why DH Howard now and have Stairs at 1st? Leave Howard at 1st and just use Stairs as DH. Why mess with it. Besides, Howard’s a pretty good fielder.

About Burrell…I really cant see someone in the american league offering
him 5 yrs $50 mill…..man, if somebody does..are they that crazy in that league?..I do love the idea of him as DH in the series..he is perfect for that position.
Victorino in center,Werth in right and …? in right
Sombody said Burrell turned down $20 mill for 2 years earlier in the year..He should have jumped on that one if he wanted to stay with the phils.I wouldnt mind having him for the 2 years, but thats it.

Burrell will get about 12-14 from someboby for three years. there isn’t much out there who drive in 100 runs and hit 30 hr. the mets would give him that I believe especially if they make the beltan trade and get lee and young centerfielder. burrell would replace alou.

Chuck turn on espn they are showing red sox highlights.
October 17th, 2008 at 6:59 pm
The only way I’d wanna see Pat as DH is if we move Werth to left and let Jenkins play right

I can’t believe the braves will trade heyward for peavy. This kid is the best prospect in baseball he is 19 and a pure superstar. hits hits with power runs arm the whole package. Has been great at three levels.

redsoxfan….why do I really want to see sox highlights right now? Saw them this morning and that is enough. Good win…..I’ll give it to you….. but the Sox are done. And as I said earlier to you today you may have a long wait to be in this position again. Don’t expect the Yanks to not be active this winter. They will be a force for next season.

Just curious..does anybody know what the status of the contracts of Victorino,Werth,Ruiz,Madson,Eyre ?Are these guys going to send us over the edge when we give them the raises they deserve?
These are the additions to the so called “core players”,that helped us get this far..

Never mind answering my question above…DUH….I just realized all that contract info is on the right side of this blog

It’s never been cool to be a Phillie fan. The team, the city, the fans, everything sux big time. They are a town full of losers!!!
Who’s going to be McNabb this time around and puke on the mound?

Too Funny Sal ! It is true all the guff me and my other cronies took as we stuck by the fact that “YES” this team is good enough to win a World Series as early as April. Stuck by them through thick and thin and now we are on the door step of a 50-50 shot at a World Championship. It’s OK though because we have to let them aboard and the good thing is we know we are riding Shot Gun with our Phillies.

Bandwagon fans suck! Stick to your guns, be loyal to your team… It makes victory much much sweeter! Haha
October 18th, 2008 at 7:57 am
There will always be the fringe fans who jump on at the success of the team. Don’t worry about that. We serious fans are there every night and every pitch, year after year. It just makes the highs that much more intense. It’s good to have all of the city on board. This is such a uniting event for Philly. All aboard the Phillies Express!

Beavis .right on .well said, you have the pulse of that city in your remarks.
October 18th, 2008 at 12:58 pm
Manny I will root for phils okay with you. I started to root after my team lost if they lose or win Iwill be a mets fan in spring
October 18th, 2008 at 2:55 pm
I really like that the whole city and fans from other teams are rooting for our team… but obviously there are some people out there that just jump on the bandwagon because they have nothing else to do. But, in general, I welcome everyone’s support. Go Phillies!
