Conservative Approach Worked In Game 1

All the time I’ve written about how the Phillies need to “play their game” to beat the Rays in the World Series. Well, last night was a prime example of that philosophy. Charlie Manuel’s conservative, stay-the-course mantra held water yet again.
First, the pitching formula: Cole Hamels for seven, Ryan Madson in the eighth, Brad Lidge in the ninth.
Second, Manuel eschewed using a pinch hitter, only bringing in Eric Bruntlett to substitute Pat Burrell in left field. Bruntlett popped out with two on and two out in the top of the ninth.
And signs that the Phils were going to play aggressive actually backfired. Chase Utley showed bunt to start his first-inning at bat. That failed. Later in the at bat he hit the two-run home run to start the scoring. Moreover, Shane Victorino decided to test the rifle arm of BJ Upton on a shallow fly ball. That plan resulted in the old F8-2 double play.
That’s not all to say the Phils should continue to play conservatively. But in the first game of the World Series, sticking to your guns and playing the game you know you can play worked. With the bright lights and global attention, it made more sense to play the familiar game. But now, Manuel should know the faults with the conservative approach:
Pinch hitting is key. Why not pinch hit Bruntlett for Greg Dobbs in that spot? Or why not take Chris Coste (or Pedro Feliz) out for Dobbs in the eighth against Grant Balfour, a fastball-throwing righty? Sometimes you have to risk losing your backup catcher, or you defensive replacement, to get another run. That’s not aggression, it’s intelligence.

I think Manuel called a good game. If you don’t send Vic and Worth pops up people are wondering why we didn’t send our fastest runner? And I would of brought in Dobbs but then they would of just brought in Price so either way you have lefty lefty or righty righty. But i ould rahter have Dobbs hitting than Bruntlett. But hey guess what… we won either way.

Yea i don’t think it was a good move to send Victorino on that ball, but they wanted to test Uptons arm and he proved he has a good one and i don’t think we’ll be doing that again unless it’s a ball to the warning track.

Maddon isn’t stupid. He had a lefty warming up every inning after Kaz came out to be ready for Dobbs. It’ll be like that all series.

Yeah bring in Dobbs and at least make them use Price and take out Balfour. Then you have a good matchup coming up but I thought it would be Vic, not Werth. Correct me if I’m wrong. Either way, Charlie shouldn’t be afraid to make a bold move this series. He’s done it before (Ruiz at third).

I just like seeing Bruntlett out there in the field. I know he can’t hit, but you never know. Bartlett hit 1 HR all season and then he took Beckett deep. You never know with Bruntlett… and lets not fool ourselves anymore. This isn’t smoke, mirrors and huge offense, it’s pitching and defense. Guys like Bruntlett are important for that… even feliz, i take his offense as a side dish to that D.

No way man…
Dobbs can hit, but in a 1 run game, on the turf, I gotta have Pedro at 3rd base. He’s a fantastic fielder, and don’t forget he had 2 hits yesterday.
you NEVER replace offense for defense late in a 1 run game. Burrell was taken out, for defense….Charlie isn’t gonig to take out one of the best fielding 3rd basemen in baseball.

I just love how on ESPN’s Stark/Caple Blog how Stark basically treated Caple like his bitch for picking the Rays in a sweep and not the Phils. Love it! GO PHILS!!!

I liked when Vic tried to score. It showed that they were going to be aggressive. If Upton doesn’t make the throw exactly like he did, then Vic scores no problem and we aren’t even talking about this. Keep the defense on their toes. Make them make the play.

300, I said the same thin earlier on another thread. If Upton’s throw is a foot in either direction Vic scores.

Cole Hamels already had a 2 run lead…why not try and be aggressive….I was fine with it, it took a perfect throw and catch to get him out, and he was barely out….plus, Cole was on the mound.

1. If only we could have Hamels for three games in this series. It’s about as likely as the Phanatic not taunting the Rays when they get to town
2. I agree that Charlie’s caution was not good because of repetitive stranded runners
3. Yes, why test a shallow field throw on a diamond with no imperfections other than its not real grass
4. Charlie should stick with what got us here, but a good general always adjusts his plan of attack during the battle and Charlie didn’t
5. Yes, yes, yes – I missed Dobbs last night

Yea Vic shouldn’t have gone because Upton was only like 10 feet from the infield…but the catcher actually bobbled the ball and didn’t have control… so the run should have scored. But i like that they are picking moments to be aggressive. Stay the Course!
