Dodgers Blast Moyer; Phils Lead Series 2-1

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Sun, October 12, 2008 11:29 PM

Jamie Moyer was cooked from the very beginning. He gave up six runs in 1.1 innings, as the Phillies dropped game three of the best-of-seven National League Championship Series, 7-2. The Phils are now ahead 2-1 in the series.

The Dodgers had a plan to beat Moyer, and they succeeded, knocking him around with a few singles, before Blake DeWitt nailed the three-RBI triple that did in the 45-year-old. Rafael Furcal’s leadoff home run in the second was pretty much the end for Moyer.

The momentum was all in the Dodgers’ corner, and a couple wild pitches didn’t help the cause. Both Moyer and Clay Condrey threw pitches that hit or brushed Russell Martin, and Los Angeles retaliated when Hiroki Kuroda flew one above Shane Victorino’s head. The heat continued until Victorino grounded out, prompting both benches to clear. Manny Ramirez was fired up. The crowd was hot. It wasn’t the best of events for a team trying to hold a lead in the series.

Still, the bullpen extinguished the Dodgers after Moyer departed. JA Happ did surrender a run during his three innings, but Condrey, Scott Eyre, Chad Durbin and JC Romero gave up no hits during their stints. Confidence is high on pitching going into game four.

But confidence is low on hitting. After getting two early runs (thanks partly to a rejuvenated Ryan Howard, who went 2-for-4), the Phils mailed it in at the plate. Jimmy Rollins is becoming hard to watch, as his flailing swing contributed to two strikeouts. Hitting .077 in the series, he’s struggling huge, and must get going if the Phils want a better chance at winning the series.

Call this one decided almost before Mary Hart’s grating, seizure-inducing squeak could escape my head. Kuroda posed huge problems for the lineup, while Moyer was the kind of pitcher this patient team could tee off against. It didn’t look good in scouting; it didn’t look good in the result.

  1. SJ Mike Says:

It makes me sad to see Jamie Moyer with the Jeltz. I know it is warranted and justified and he totally deserves it, it’s just sad because of what he has done for us this season.

  2. Chase Mutley Says:

I’m not really worried about this game, but it does raise the question of what this does to the rotation. If Jaime’s spot comes up again in this series or if, God willing, there is a next series, who gets the call? He’s looked awfully fragile these past two outtings. Not the typical 3 runs in 6 innings with lots of bases-loaded jams — just completely off.

  3. Georgie Says:

Does there have to be a Jeltz Award during playoffs? Don’t you think they’ve all earned a pass for the rest of the season? Just thinkin’……

  4. SJ Mike Says:

Any retaliatory statements I hope made tomorrow night are with the bat and on the scoreboard. No more of this throwing at each other crap, although I don’t trust Manny and Martin to hold back their bratty diva personalities.

  5. Jeremy Says:

Manuel takes a risk by not pitching Hamels tomorrow. Game 7, if it gets that far, would either have to be Moyer or Blanton. And if it goes 7 games it could be because Blanton didn’t pitch well in Game 4.

I’ll be at the next two games and I really don’t want to have to deal with idiot Dodger fans if they win the next two

  6. Chase Mutley Says:

Jeremy, on the bright side, if the Phillies do lose the next two games, there won’t be anyone there from the 5th inning on to rub it in.

  7. MikeB Says:

Does anyone think that having too much time off between starts is affecting Moyer? The last game he pitched in was what—eight days ago?

Phillies should pitch Hamels tomorrow so he would be available in five days shoulld there be a game 7 in Philadelphia on Saturday night. Let Blanton pitch in LA on Wednesday.

This roughing up of Moyer was pretty much expected. Dodgers probably had a batting practice pitcher or coach simulate the pitching of Moyer in their batting practice on Saturday and of course, they have that advance scouting info.

  8. Wilson Says:

From the beginning this was the game I was sure the Phils would lose. Not anything against Jamie Moyer….I just felt that no matter the outcome of the first two, going back to LA with Kuroda pitching, it was bound not to end well. On a bright note, I do think the Phillies can pull one win in the next two out with ease…as long as the bats wake up. But I think we’re in for a hell of a ride…and I’m looking forward to it

  9. Jeffrey Says:

We can all forget about Hamels pitching on short rest. Cholly and Dubee always respond to that idea by saying he’s never done it before. I think we, as fans, ought to defer to the coaches on this one. They know a lot more about Hamels’ physical and mental make up than we do.

  10. MikeB Says:

Then we would more than likely be looking at Blanton in a seventh game.

  11. Paul Says:

I had a bad feeling about this one at the start. But now the team needs to bounce back. If the hitters can be patient, and Blanton can pitch great again, the Phils could have a chance to be up 3-1.

  12. Jim Says:

Its up 2 bam bam. He’s gotta bring his A game against lowe

  13. Dice Says:

Jamie Moyer does not deserve the Jeltz Award. He pitched his game and the Dodgers just got really lucky . There was nothing wrong with Jamie’s pitching at all.

Now how about conisdering this, a few balls got past Feliz and Utley in the first inning that SHOULD HAVE been caught, knocked down, whatever.

Now as far as that POS number 99 Manny Rameriz goes. I’m all for one of our guys throwing at him, behind him or above him and that goes for the crybaby Russel Martin too.

  14. WestbrookRuns Says:

    >

Who knows what was going on in Manny’s insane mind, but I mean, Phil Sheridan was completely right in his Inquirer column… we started it with Myers (Martin and Manny) in game 2 AND we almost hit Martin in the head in the first inning tonight. I want the Dodgers to be as intimidated as much as possible, but we really don’t deserve to complain about this idiotic affair because it’s our fault.

As for Moyer, he had basically the same season as Blanton, and there’s no reason to pick Blanton in one game over Moyer. Personally I don’t know why we’re not doing what the Dodgers are doing and sending Cole out there again tomorrow and for a possible game 7.

  15. SJ Mike Says:

Approach Game 7 scenarios if it comes down to that. Worry about Game 4 for now.

  16. Phil Says:

Was anyone at the Penns Landing thing? I was there, it was a blast, eventhough we lost. I got a case of Philadelphia Brewing Company variety pack with my girlfriend and a few friends. We got trashed and had fun. We all pretty much knew going into the game that we were gonna lose. The Dodgers are a patient team, and patient teams can kill Moyer. On top of that Kuroda owned the Phillies this year. I didn’t think Moyer would get trashed that bad, but it happens. Honestly, in a way I’m glad they lost. I do not want the Phillies to sweep. You don’t want the team to have a huge lay off before the World Series. It can kill momentum. See Rockies 07. You can’t win them all. I know you see a loss and think it’s the end of the world, but it’s really not. They’re still ahead in the series, and they have Blanton going tomorrow who pitched exceptional in the NLDS against Lowe who is going on 3 days rest. In game 5 you have Hamels going vs. Kershaw who we owned this year, Maddux who we have owned before, or Billingsley who we totally thrashed. I think we’ll take 1 of the 2 and come home up 3-2. I think Myers will pitch brilliantly in that situation and we’ll win game 6. Don’t worry guys, we’re fine.

  17. DodgerBlue Says:

You still have no clue. No pitcher is going to throw at somebody’s head and try to kill them. He was pitching to hit him but it had to get away a little bit. Just like Myers, Moyer’s and Durban’s did. The pitch that went to Martins head was closer then the one that went up on Vic. Look at the replay! If you pitch up and in mistakes can happen so then don’t pitch up and in and nobody will be crying about it. Just play baseball and stop the BS! One mistake could cost either team if someone gets hurt! And then what?

The Dodger’s are going to bitch when they get thrown at and the Phillies are going to bitch when they get thrown at. If they throw at someone mistakes happen but thats the chances you take if your throwing at the other team. The hitters have to be more aware when their own pitchers are throwing at the other team a few times that they are taking a big chance of their own hitters getting thrown at. Thats Baseball!

  18. JW Says:

We shouldn’t be so worried about Joe Blanton pitching against the Dodgers as much as so many of you are suggesting. While they did light Myers up for 5 runs in game two, I feel Blanton can neutralize the right-handed power of Manny and Martin. Myers’ fastball was flat and often belt-high. Any Major Leaguer worth his grain in salt will succeed against that. Blanton is effective when he keeps the ball low; and look for him to do just that in game four. Derek Lowe, on short rest ( a sinker-baller’s best friend) will also be a tough matchup. I look for a pitcher’s duel in game four, with our strength against righties coming out on top. A solo-shot will determine this game. Let’s hope it comes from a bat wielded by a gray jersey.

    GO PHILLIES!

  19. See both sides Says:

Martin was not crying when he got hit the first time…he was in pain. It hit him square in the knee cap. A 60 mph pitch would hurt like hell in the kneecap as well. Clondrey’s pitch to Martin was not debatable….as was Kuroda’s pitch to Vic. Clondrey’s pitch was at Martin’s neck. He was making a statement. Myers pitch did not SLIP. He was making a statement. Don’t fool yourselves. It was OBVIOUS. There were a lot of rumblings before the serious about you guys doing it to Manny, you even saw them yourself. Martin was pissed off mainly because of the double play, but also because of getting brush backed. I do agree booing VIc was stupid but, every team boos every opposing player in every city. Kuroda did not try to hit Vic in his head. He threw it way over Vic’s head though I guess I can understand where Vic is saying hit me in the ribs. But Kuroda was NOT trying to hit him, he was just making a statement. IT IS BASEBALL.

  20. SJ Mike Says:

This seems like the kind of game we want Blanton in.

  21. See both sides Says:

Agree with most dodger blue except Kuroda trying to hit Vic. He was trying to just make a statement. If Kuroda was trying to hit him he would have put it in his back or thigh.

  22. See both sides Says:

By the way, Phils fans, go to Dodgers thoughts and look at the picture….Clondrey’s ball is RIGHT AT MARTINS HEAD. LOOK AT THE PICTURE.

  23. SJ Mike Says:

Nobody is condoning Condrey’s pitch and all agree that within the unwritten rules of baseball warrants retaliation. I don’t agree with the 2 wrongs make a right philosophy, but I know it is how it goes.

The fact is that the retaliation pitch was a screamer towards Victorino’s head. The ball near Martin’s chin was close, but the picture isn’t where it crossed the plate, so that is a decieving view.

And once again, Myers was not throwing at Manny. He’s the type of pitcher that if he is intending to throw at someone, he will do it and not miss.

  24. See both sides Says:

Martins pitch was a lot closer to the head than the one to Vic’s was. Look at the replay to Vic. If it was me, I would have NAILED Vic right in the back. But they didn’t want a baserunner and they just wanted to send a statement. No harm no foul. Martin didn’t get hit in the head and neither did Vic.

  25. SJ Mike Says:

I am looking at both replays. And they were both close and completely uncalled for. One being closer to the other doesn’t make it better. They were both targetted for the head and wrong.

Victorino knew it was coming and was going to accept it. But 2 wrongs don’t make a right and you don’t intentionally throw at someone’s head because another pitch was high and tight and could have been intentional. All it takes is for somebody not able to get out of the way and then it gets hurt.

And Manny was the one going nuts with the benches clearing.

  26. see noth sides Says:

& for all the talk about the Phillies haven’t been throwing at the Dodgers…. explain this:

“Someone was bound to get hit. The situation called for it,” Victorino explained.

  27. Jim Says:

Dodgers fans are a joke that’s all I have to say

  28. mike Says:

    how gay is russell martin?

  29. Jim Says:

Russell martin is pretty gay. They showed him flippin out he just needs to stop girlin

  30. Mark Says:

The Phillies offense has to come alive again to take this series. Moyer deserves a pass for a bad game considering all he’s done this season.
I was hoping for good playoffs for Moyer to put him in contention for the CY Young. Now, I don’t know.

  31. J-Man Says:

Tomorrows game could be ugly too because who knows what we’ll get outta Blanton tomorrow because the Dodgers aren’t the Brewers…Manny Ramirez is a .560 career hitter against Blanton, but he only has 2 extra base hits off him (1 HR and 1 double)…I wish Blanton could come out a give us 6 or 7 solid innings and Lowe being on short rest hopefully the Phils can get to him…Were gonna need J-Roll to wake up soon because he’s looking pathetic.

  32. Lefty Says:

Have some more liquor you looser Manny.

  33. NJ Says:

Just watched an ESPN.com breakdown of the Dodgers win with John Kruk, no-one seems to have good things to say about the Phillies winning or loosing. Being real I’m sure we all expected to drop 1,2 maybe all 3 of the games in LA but were you prepared for such unrepresentative media coverage?

The hitting batters issue is turning into a joke and it was a bad bad pitch by Kuroda no-one on the Philllies staff could have gotten away with, you plain and simple don’t throw at a guys head and put it in the meaty part of his back or butt if it’s retaliation but that was bush league by Kuroda and what if the ball had slipped out of his hand and actually hit Vic in the head? Probably nothing since it wasn’t Manny on the receiving end…

Mark- There was no way Moyer was going to get more than a couple of votes, he didn’t throw enough innings and put on too many baserunners plus play-off performance isn’t meant to count a thing towards voting, Brad Lidge has a decent shot of coming in 2nd.

  34. Brian Says:

Several things are bothering me this morning

    1. If Martin doesn’t act like a fag in the dugout, no one throws at Victorino. Shows that the dodgers are pretty gutless if they thought they were getting thrown at.

    2. Rollins has been brutal. His AB’s are almost automatic outs.

    3. Did anyone watch comcast’s post game last night. During Charlie’s press conference you could clearly hear the dodgers celebrating. It was as if the table was set up in their clubhouse. Afterwards Mitch Williams says…”I’m pretty sure they only won 1 game there tonight.

    4. I think we should have a contest to guess how many times Buck and McCarver will say the word “Manny” tonight. I’m going to put it in the area of 125 or so. Their obvious rooting for the dodgers is a disgrace. However I’m sure mlb is rooting for LA too just for more Manny talk. Sickening!

    5. Let’s give up on the Cole in game 7 thing. Ain’t gonna happen. Win 1 of the next 2 and game 6 here and on we go. Karuda doesn’t scare me in game 6 here.

  35. Brian Says:

Also….post season doesn’t affect cy young voting ballots are in at conclusion of regular season

  36. NJ Says:

By all means hit Vic he’s tough, don’t throw at his head and did we throw at Manny’s head? No.

The Dodgers celebrated like they’d won the series because that’s what their like, their not the ‘good’ ballclub their made out to be and most aren’t Torre type kids. The Dodgers have the advantage in they have absolute media coverage, if they loose the focus is still on them.

  37. Julie Says:

    Game plan for tonight:

If benches clear again, send Matt Stairs after Manny.

Count which happens more: announcers pining over Manny, the number of empty seats in the lower level, shots of Pat Sajak (really?) in the crowd, or Russell Martin hissy fits

Be patient and have the Phils unload on Lowe. Phils could make a real statement tonight if they can get their offense going and get some hits. Forget about all the pitching at people’s heads. That makes a small statement. Winning makes an even bigger statement.

  38. NJ Says:

    http://www.sportsline.com/mlb/story/11029270

They write what they want to write… ‘nearly decapitated Manny in game 2′

  39. Don M Says:

Coule things.. Moyer got rocked last night, but his game in Milwaukee was bad because of an inconsistent umpire (for both teams).. so you still go back to him in Game #7 because without Moyer, you don’t even make the playoffs this year..

    .. Manny is a joke…

The Associated Press photo on cnnsi.com has a picture of him being restrained by Torre, R Martin, Nomar, etc.. and says “Manny.. was right in the middle of things after benches cleared in Game 3.” ….

when what it should say is the truth, that Manny waited until MOST players from BOTH teams were between him and any pushing and shoving.. and then he decided to look tough (even with his long, flowing, dirty hair) and with 30 players between him and any arguement, tried to get at the Phillies players.

Manny is a joke.. Russel Martin is a girl… NEVER do you hit somebody in the head. Pitchers are good enough that if they want to hit somebody, they’ll hit them.. There should have been some retaliation for Myers throwing behind Manny last game.. not because Martin gets hit with a “softball from 100-year-old-Moyer” or because Condrey threw up-and-in.. that is a part of baseball, and pitchers are allowed to throw brushback-pitches.. if its in front of the player, they should be able to get out of the way.. if its behind them, or at their heads.. its another story!

  40. NJ Says:

I think we can all agree the associated press sees this one way, the Dodgers are the good guys and the Phils are the bad guys they’d rather not talk about because they might just win and upset the fantasy.

It’s not fair, it’s not Buster Olney/Peter Gammons type reporting/coverage but it’s the way it is…

  41. KMJ Says:

Jamie Moyer had a great year, but there is absolutely no way he sees the field again in this series, at least. If we are to make the world series, Cole is going to have to suck it up and pitch games 1, 4 and 7 on short rest.

  42. Don M Says:

Well Hamels ain’t pitching tonight.. so there goes that theory..

and last night.. the Dodgers did a good job of hitting.. Furcal hit a low breaking ball for a hit… because they were in Double-Play setup.. Either was able to pull one through the hole on the right side… Blake just barely fisted a pitch into RF..

the only BAD pitches were the one to Manny.. and the ball left hanging to DeWitt.

Its not like they rocked him all over the park. so I think absolutely you give Moyer another start when his turn comes around.

  43. Cole Hamels Says:

    3 Things.

I like Vic as the “bad-guy” getting booed. I think he will stick it to LA in game 4.

What is up with Manny’s braids? It looks like he took my dogs chew toys and stuck them to his head.

I was not suprised when Moyer got rocked. I had a feeling the stars were aligning and it was going to be a bad day for philly.

  44. Ben Says:

The nearly decapitated part of that article is hilarious. I don’t think that guy is watching the same series. It’s amazing how the media is making more of this than it should be. Are there really no other stories to talk about in this series? The Dodger players are eating up every bit of it up with their comments to the media. The Phillies still have a chance to put the Dodgers down and out tonight. Blanton needs to use the aggresiveness of the Dodgers against them. Dodgers are gonna wanna try to make a statement game tonight and Blanton needs to be up to the task.

  45. Craig Says:

We’ll take one of the next two against the Dodgers.

We’ll get them back to CBP 3-2 with Myers on the mound.

It’ll be the A++ post all star Myers that’ll be out there. He lives for that type of game and he’ll pitch an 8 inning 3 hit 1ER game and take us to the WS.

  46. NJ Says:

I’m not a fan of the constant bench-clearing but would love to see Martin get some chin music.

  47. LH Says:

kudos to the Phils bullpen last night

Is Fox selling videos of the Phils – Dodgers confrontation because they seem to be doing a lot of promotion last night?

Here are a couple of sale suggestions for the videos:
    1. Video title for commercials – “Baseball Players Gone Wild”
    2. Commercial Action suggestion – Baseball players rip caps off their heads with a tasteful blank banner to promote interest
    3. Warning Label on Box – Icon of an Umpire with caption – ‘warning discretion needed’

  48. Brian Michael Says:

Speaking of empty seats….There are still tickets available for the next 2 games in LA. If anyone is interested, you can buy them here.

  49. Tim Malcolm Says:

    That’s just sad.

  50. Geoff Says:

What are you talkling about? He absolutely got rocked all over the place. They were waiting on the soft foastball. He was leaving half of his pitches up over the plate. THis was one of those performances we saw last year against the pirates where he gave up like 9 runs in 4 innings. He was THAT bad last night. He was one hundred percent ineffective. I have no confidence in starting him in Game 7. NONE. I know he has a track record and carries all of this respect, but this team was well prepared for him and jumped ALL OVER HIM right away. The game was over in the first innning. You simply cannot take that risk again ESPECIALLY in a game 7. You pull Moyer from the rotation for now, maybe you let him start a WS game. You dont go to a game 7. If you have to you send Happ or Blanton out there on Short Rest.

They have to close it out before or in Game 6.

AND I take a serious glance now at signing a free agent starting pticher to push Moyer to battle for the 5th spot with JA Happ.

  51. Don M Says:

Blanton that everyone has said is terrible since we got him.. up until game #4 of the NLDS- Blanton? just making sure we’re talking about the same guy..

Did you watch the replay’s and see where the pitches were that they hit?? Furcal’s was off the dirt to get it started.. Either just barely pulled one past Utley because he was over towards 2nd.. Manny will hit anything.. he made a few bad pitches, Manny, DeWitt, and Furcal’s HR..

Typical Phillies fan though, ready to go with the “what have you done for me lately” theory, instead of the “dance with the girl that brought you”… Make sure your careful when you jump back on the Moyer bandwagon after his next start though

  52. Chase Mutley Says:

I have a business trip to LA that has me arriving at LAX at 11:30pm, trying to up my flight to arrive at 3:00pm instead and go to the game. I had no idea tickets would still be available at face value.

  53. Don M Says:

And if you stay past the 6th inning.. you can move on up into the good seats, because those fans leave early to beat the traffic….

  54. SJ Mike Says:

I think the Phils are one good swing away from retaking control. Remember they had a stinker against the Brewers and then came out swinging the next day in an offensive explosion.

It’ll be a second time around on Lowe within a couple days on short rest. I think good things.

  55. Isaiah Says:

Book it: Don M loves Manny more than Buck. Get out of here.

  56. Geoff Says:

Theyll be fine tonight and or tomorrow. Im not too worried. I just think that he has shown absolutely nothing in the first two starts of the postseason. He got squeezed in the nlds, ok fine. but last night he didnt get squeezed, he got HAMMERED ALL OVER THE BALLPARK. PERIOD. Lets hope we dont have to deal with that in game 7. Just get it over with before then please.

  57. Don M Says:

    huh?

  58. Geoff Says:

Also…its not what have you dnoe for me lately..its are you hot or cold? right now, hes ice cold and he may not give them the best chance to win a game 7 pitching that way.

  59. Geoff Says:

and blanton, assuming he pitches well tonight, has been hot….so, hot or cold? who do you go with?

  60. Don M Says:

You will undoubtedly break your ankles at some point jumping on-and-off the Moyer bandwagon… to help you, here are some pointers for Walking with Crutches:

    http://health.rutgers.edu/factsheets/crutches.htm

Never rest your weight on your underarms. This can damage nerves.

Balance is basic to walking properly with crutches. To maintain your balance, keep your body in good alignment with your head held high, shoulders back and stomach and buttocks in. Using crutches takes practice. Some situations that require extra care are getting into and out of a chair, using stairs and walking through doorways. Here are some guidelines for using crutches in these situations.

    Getting into a Chair

Get as close to the chair as possible and turn so that your back is facing the chair. Position crutches so that you can hold both in the hand of your uninjured side. Slide your injured leg forward holding the arm or the back of the chair and the crutches for support. Gently lower yourself into the chair.

    Getting out of a Chair

Slide to the edge of the chair with your injured foot flat on the floor. Holding both crutches in the hand on your injured side, lean forward and grip the chair arm or back with your other hand. Push yourself up with your uninjured foot or leg. Transfer one crutch to the other side. Keep your injured foot or leg off the floor with the flexed knee if possible.

  61. Don M Says:

One “cold” start shouldn’t get you skipped when you’ve been MONEY all season long.. Did he look bad last night.. yea.. should he get skipped, NO.

Using your theory, Myers wouldn’t have pitched in the playoffs because he was COLD in his last two starts of the regular season.. we wouldn’t have Hamels going in the game #1’s.. since he’s “not an Ace”… and Madson would have been outright released.. so Im not sure who our setup man would be..

just relax.. Moyer hasn’t looked sharp, but you can’t give up on him.. and especially not for Joe Blanton (who I was about the only defender of two weeks ago.. because he was better than what we had).. and he looked GREAT against the Brewers, but in a do-or-die game I take Moyer over him 100 times out of 100

  62. vsg Says:
