Phils Pound, Then Contain Dodgers For Game 2 Win

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Fri, October 10, 2008 08:15 PM

The Brett Myers Show continued into the National League Championship Series. Myers went five innings and surrendered five runs, but made his biggest contributions at the plate. His three hits and three RBI fueled the Phillies to an 8-5 win over the Dodgers, putting them up 2-0 in the best-of-seven NLCS.

Myers contributed to two big innings — a four-run second and a four-run third. In the second, it all came with two outs. Greg Dobbs singled. Carlos Ruiz doubled to bring home Dobbs, then Myers roped one to score Ruiz. Jimmy Rollins singled. Shane Victorino deposited two on a single.

In the third, they picked up where they left Chad Billingsley, as Myers sliced a two-run single, and Victorino knocked a two-run triple. The eight runs were enough.

Myers, however, great at bat, wasn’t as great on the mound, and struggled to command his fastball. His futile blow was a Manny Ramirez homer. No worries — the bullpen did their job. First Chad Durbin, then JC Romero. Then, Ryan Madson had a tremendous 1-2-3 eighth to bridge it to Brad Lidge. He secured another playoff save by striking out Nomar Garciaparra with two on.

So much to write about, and now so much time. Saturday is an off day. They come back Sunday night in Los Angeles. For now, soak it up and celebrate — your Phillies are up 2-0 in the NLCS.

    Very proud today. Very proud.

  2. Chase Mutley Says:

…and I look forward to all that intense coverage about how cheap Manny’s home run was in our Little League field.

    Fair and unbiased.

  3. Greg F. Says:

The Phils have knocked down the Dodgers 1 and 2 starters, and head to Chavez Ravine up 2-0. Shane Victorino is emerging as the next NL superstar as his play continues to set the tone for the Phitin’ Phils. Now the Dodgers have hold back the dike with their 3 and 4 starters, and maybe Lowe on short rest. An unenviable position, to say the least. All in all, I like where the Phils are right now. Let’s keep the momentum going. Ryan Howard has to wake up soon, as does Rollins. I look for these two to pick it up in game three. We need them.

  4. Brian Michael Says:

Awesome win tonight! The Bank was anxious…but rockin!

  5. Georgie Says:

Jeez, they just said on csn that Shane’s grandmother passed away today.

  6. Jim Says:

On 610 they said manuels mom died today too. A nice win to cheer him a little

  7. Ryk Says:

@Mutley. Seriously. But you have to hand it to Manny on that one. The pitch location was pretty near spot on. The dude just muscled it out of there. Should have been a broken bat pop-up.

  8. Chase Mutley Says:

Hey, I’ll never take away anything from Manny. He’s frightening. God bless him for doing what he does.

    But…

That HR was even more shallow than Pat’s on Thursday and after having our Game 1 win spoiled the next day because the media would rather write about our ‘bandbox’ and not a brilliant outing by Cole Hamels, I hope they in turn write about how the score really would have been 8-2 if not for errors by Dobbs and Ruiz and a cheap HR by Manny.

I’m sure that tomorrow somehow Brett Myers is going to wind up on the Mitchell Report or we’ll find out that Chad Billingsly let us win because he felt bad for Charlie.

  9. Amanda Says:

    Great game.

Can’t believe about Victorinos grandmother though.. Crazy. Her and Charlie’s mom on the same day. My condolences to both of them.

Nice to get a 2-0 lead. Gotta keep it goin. GO PHILS!

  10. Sean Says:

greatest game I’ve ever been to in my life.

  11. MikeB Says:

You have to pitch it further inside to Manny like Madsen did in the eighth inning to hopefully get him to pop it up. On the home run, Myer’s pitch was out closer to the plate and Manny was able to turn on it. Pitch did not have enough fire on it either. Manny is an extraordinary hitter but Myers did not have his best stuff tonight and then tired after running the bases.

  12. Geoff Says:

What a bizaare thing that Brett Myers went 3/3 with 3 rbi! he pitched ok except for the manny blast. ryan madson has been unbelievable lately…and lidge tightroped one again…nice…up 2-0, KEY as they head into Los Angeles. Jamie Moyer wont get beat this time out. He might pitch to a draw with Kuroda but he wont lose this start. Too experienced to get hit around like that again. Not sure about Game 4, but I like the Phillies to win at least one game in Los Angeles.

  13. gplad Says:

I was so loud! …I mean so damn loud. When the beat LA chants reached a crecendo durring the rally it was deafening and I could see intimidation in their eyes… being young as they are … I hope we’re prepared.. this team, other than USC is all that they have other than the Lakers (there may be orther teams but if you’ve ever been there for a while , you’ll know what I mean) …This still won’t be easy. Especially with Torre . GO PHILLIES GO

  14. Ryk Says:

Ya know, I actually have to agree with Joe Buck and/or Tim McCarver on something. They commented on Madsen’s velocity improving of late and suggested it was because he went from a 2+ innung guy to a one-inning set up man. Less fatigue on his arm = stronger = more velocity.
So do the Phils sign this guy to a long-term contract, give him another 1-year deal, or let him go to arbitration. I’d lock this guy up. He has shown some incredible progress this year, and I think we have either a stud set up man, or a future closer on our hands. Sign him now and sign him cheap before he realizes his potential and wants tens of millions.
(Sorry for the duplicate post – this is in the gameday thread as well – but I figured it would get more views here.)

  15. B Says:

Manny hit a no doubter? lol he got jammed and it landed in the flower beds . . . . talk about a cheap homer.

  16. Adam Eaton Says:

Hey guys. I know you have two west coast guys, Blanton and Moyer, pitching the next two games on the west coast. But I’m a west coast guy too. I can handle the pressure. Can you give me a chance? Please?????

  17. Keith Says:

k, Adam, u can pitch game five. ;)

  18. gplad Says:

Adam, go get me some Gatorade, and a sandwich, …and a towell…

  19. gplad Says:

YOUNG BUCKS! …. understand the beauty and the majesty of this… Team baseball was the operative word tonight… tonight Brett , , , tomorow C.Coste, or G. Dobbs, it doesn’t matter… they pick each other up. They may not have the individual nicknames but the yoeman’s work gets done ….. It’s beautiful!!!! There is some kind of magic floating with this team…. and I will be first to admit I was slow to believe …. but I DO NOW>>>>>>>> DO NOT LOOSE THE FAITH !!!!!!!! Go Phils.

  20. Aaron Rowand Says:

uh, is it too late to sign that contract?

  21. Justin Says:

Where has “Cooch” clutch been all year?

Marson and Ruiz next year behind the plate would be great.

    2 down 2 to go…..LETS GO PHILLIES!!!!!!

  22. gplad Says:

COSTE IS AN ASSET >>>…..JUST WAIT AND SEE ….. I will personally guarantee he will make a difference for us yet….

  23. MikeB Says:

Adam Eaton, you can pitch batting practice next game.

  24. maxhole Says:

i work valet at marriott downtown. the mlb.com guys who are covering the nlcs games are staying at the hotel, and ive gotten the chance to chat with them. the one is from la, big fan of the blue, obviously. today he was ranting about Billingsley being lights out, sending myers to an early shower, manny show blah blah. cant wait to lay it on him saturday morning.

he also got to ask manny about his moon shot double in game one. manny replied that he needs to play the angles better. god, i almost puked watching the ball bank off the small fence. for an instant i was sure it was landing in the greenage.

  25. Craig Says:

Nice win this last night however Howard’s post-season performances are becoming a little worrying.

  26. MikeB Says:

I really agree about Howard, Craig. This guy is practically doing nothing to help his team at the plate. Rollins was not much better either on Friday.

  27. Craig Says:

Mike – Rollins was poor last night but he made a big impact on the Brewers series. I suppose the upside to Howard’s non-performance this post season is how the lower order guys have come through especially Ruiz.

  28. Gnomicide Says:

    Just not a good team.

  29. PhillyGirlinMichigan Says:

Like this somewhat sarcastic review of the game in the Detroit News this morning from our sportswriter Tom Gage:

    “Enough!

There’s nothing uglier than Manny Ramirez ’s batting helmet.

The pine tar on it gathers dirt — to the extent, frankly, that it looks gross. Like he fell asleep under a tree full of birds.

If it were the NFL, and that was the way his helmet looked, he’d get fined. And the next week it would be gone. ”

    “Goats -
Chad Billingsley , the Dodger starter for allowing a pair of run-scoring, first-pitch hits to Phillies’ counterpart, Brett Myers , whose three first-pitch hits in Game 2 matched the number he’s had in 390 regular-season plate appearances. ”

    “Seeing stars-
That Chad Durbin guy, who worked a scoreless inning of relief for the victorious Phillies in Game 2 — where did he come from?

Probably from some team so overloaded with relief pitchers, it couldn’t possibly have used him this year.

Think so? Not.  Durbin not only had the best year of his career for the Phillies, after being non-tendered by the Tigers, he had a 1.88 ERA at home in hitter-friendly Citizens Bank Park.”

  30. Georgie Says:

I most definitely agree with that guy regarding Manny’s batting helmet, it looks like someone puked on it months ago and now it’s just caked on there-ugh!

Did anyone see that still shot of Charlie and Manny before the game? It was taken from behind them, they had their arms around each other, looked like Manny was consoling him. I think Charlie is one of those rare people who tries to find and embrace the good side of others, even Manny, apparently.

  31. Harper Says:

My friends, it’s time for a new chant:

    Brett The Bat!

    Brett The Bat!

    Brett The Bat!

    Brett The Bat!

  32. gplad Says:

My heart and prayers go out to both Shane and Coach as well as their families today.

  33. Gabriel Says:

well manny and uncle cholly have the history, he managed him in cleveland… so i think there is a mutual respect there
howards output so far is worrisome to say the least, but lets face it, he’s a pure hitter who is simply not getting any pitches, i think they said last night that so far this series he’s gotten ONE fastball, everything else breaking balls… he’s getting frustrated but i think that after last nights team performance he will see some better pitches, the key is to get guys on ahead of him and let him face nothing but sliders in BP so he can see the spin better…
this team is playing to win and i cant wait to see them back up our ‘100 year old softball pitcher’ !!! lets go phils!

  34. Good Lt. Says:

    >> Brett The Bat!

    LOL

  35. MikeB Says:

If Brett is going to be a big-time hitter now he is going to have to shed a few pounds before next season so he can get around the bases faster and have more stamina when he pitches.
