Game 2 : National League Championship Series
Phillies lead 1-0
Los Angeles Dodgers at Philadelphia Phillies
Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia
4:35 p.m. / 72, sunny
Chad Billingsley (16-10, 3.14 ERA) vs. Brett Myers (10-13, 4.55 ERA)
With a 1-0 lead in the NLCS, Brett Myers takes the mound for the Phillies against the Dodgers. The right-hander went seven strong against Milwaukee in game two of the NLDS, gaining the win over CC Sabathia.
Chad Billingsley will get the ball for Los Angeles. He was hit hard when he faced the Phils last, but is a hard-throwing righty with a devastating slider.

Seven Phillie hitters are .300 or better against Billingsley. Ryan Howard has a home run in six at bats against him. … Pat Burrell is 32 today. … The Phillies were 60-48 against right-handed starters in 2008. … The Phillies were 24-24 in day games in 2008, and 2-0 in the playoffs. … And in day games Myers was 2-4 with a 5.70 ERA. … Of Dodger starters, Matt Kemp is best against Myers, 4-for-10 with a home run. … Chase Utley’s home run last night was just his fourth since the Phillies played the Dodgers at Chavez Ravine.

Your Gameday Beer
Tonight, we go back to Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. This earthy little brew is phenomenal. I love it. It’s bitter but beautiful in its taste. I’d eat a nice, fat cheeseburger and onion rings with it. Anything will do, really. Tonight it’s about Myers, getting the job done, setting up the offense for success, and giving the crowd a lot to yell about. Let’s get that 2-0 lead tonight and put the Dodgers on their backs. It’s the only way to live.
For The Gipper
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Charlie Manuel, who lost his mother today. He will manage the team today.
Go Phillies!

Love seeing Dobbs in there. What a hitter.
October 10th, 2008 at 2:18 pm
ESPN are reporting that Charlie Manuels mother passed away last night / today.
October 10th, 2008 at 2:23 pm
Good move throwing another lefty in the mix. Kuo only threw 15 last night but I think there’s a good shot we’ll get to see Beimel tonight. Go Phils!!!
October 10th, 2008 at 2:40 pm
Dobbs is a good choice, they need the offense to score runs in a couple different innings.
October 10th, 2008 at 2:44 pm
Great Gameday Brew…it doesn’t get much better than a Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. Unfortunately with the economy, I’ll be drinking Miller Lite cans!
Myers has to go out and get’em tonight! Looking forward to it!
October 10th, 2008 at 3:10 pm
Aren’t the Phils 2-0 in day games in 2008? Games 1 and 4 vs. the Brewers…
October 10th, 2008 at 3:20 pm
That’s the second time I’ve mixed up Brewers games. Yeesh. My head is spinning.
October 10th, 2008 at 3:37 pm
Condolences to Charlie over the loss of his mother.
October 10th, 2008 at 3:39 pm
my heart goes out to uncle chollie. RIP mrs. manuel.
October 10th, 2008 at 3:50 pm
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to Charlie Manuel, who lost his mother today. He will manage the team today.”
I’m a Dodgers troll, but that news truly does suck.
October 10th, 2008 at 3:51 pm
Am I a jerk to be worried that they are totally reliant on the long ball?
Or am I a jerk for other reasons?
October 10th, 2008 at 3:56 pm
only a few more minutes!!! lets go phils! i’m all aboard that redneck express! big game, big moment, big brett! looking at that lineup in billingsly eyes must be scary… all those power lefties… i wouldn’t be surprised if the bat has another gamebreaking hit… lets go phightin!!!!!!!
October 10th, 2008 at 3:57 pm
They just played the shit out of the Cubs while complimenting the Phillies and us (the fans). awesome!!!
October 10th, 2008 at 4:00 pm
First of all I would like to pass along my sympathies to Charlie Manual and his Family…
Now on to Baseball…
This could either fire up your team or make them depressed…I was expecting a split in Philly and this could ruin my plans
Good game last night…Game could have gone either way…looking for a different outcome tonight…Go Dodgers
October 10th, 2008 at 4:02 pm
I know it may not be right or reasonable or logical, but I am always on pins and needles when Myers pitches.
Tim, you have really worked your butt off lately with all this great info, whose head wouldn’t be spinning?
October 10th, 2008 at 4:04 pm
ruin your plans?!?! i think it may have ruined uncle charlie’s day/week/month/year! when your mom passes i’ll offer my sympathies to you and then tell you it messed up my plans for a sporting event
October 10th, 2008 at 4:06 pm
Brian and I will be on hand for game two, adding in game tidbits as we see fit. I’m actually on the El now heading down and I know this kid is going to kill me for being late.
October 10th, 2008 at 4:13 pm
Go Phillies!
October 10th, 2008 at 4:20 pm
“I know it may not be right or reasonable or logical, but I am always on pins and needles when Myers pitches.”
How could you do anything else?! Myers has been a question mark all season. He’s such a loose cannon that you never know what you’re gonna get.
For a million reasons, my anxiety level for this game is through the roof. Last game at home until 6, Pat’s birthday, Charlie’s mother, the pot of coffee I’ve drank at work — I hope the team takes a commanding lead early in the game. I can’t take much else.
October 10th, 2008 at 4:22 pm
Well, first story line that Joe Buck brings up – ballpark dimensions.
October 10th, 2008 at 4:23 pm
STOP TALKING ABOUT THE DIMENSIONS! Both teams are playing in the same park!
October 10th, 2008 at 4:24 pm
So now it’s the ballpark’s fault that the Dodgers lost last night? Give me a break!
October 10th, 2008 at 4:27 pm
hahah i hate buck/mccarver
October 10th, 2008 at 4:27 pm

October 10th, 2008 at 4:36 pm
That was pretty funny
October 10th, 2008 at 4:36 pm
Hey was that Fanny Ramirez?
October 10th, 2008 at 4:37 pm
No NEPA, you’re not alone there, the Phanatic cracks me up too.
October 10th, 2008 at 4:37 pm
I laughed aloud; everybody stared at me weirdly.
October 10th, 2008 at 4:38 pm
Listening on the internet, what’d the Phanatic do?
October 10th, 2008 at 4:38 pm
the Carlos Ruiz and the Howard impressions had me dyin.
October 10th, 2008 at 4:39 pm
for myers, coming out with a 1st inning like that is huge.
October 10th, 2008 at 4:39 pm
He mimed the starting lineup for the fox set up
October 10th, 2008 at 4:41 pm
Time for Howard to step up and do something. Let’s get something early on this guy!
October 10th, 2008 at 4:41 pm
howard better not swing at a single pitch his next time around…
October 10th, 2008 at 4:47 pm
Is Dave Kingman dead? If he is, did he reincarnate himself in the form of Ryan Howard? If he isn’t, is he Howard’s personal hitting coach?
October 10th, 2008 at 4:50 pm
wow i cant believe nobody scored on that one…
October 10th, 2008 at 4:51 pm
Haha, Dave Kingman!
October 10th, 2008 at 4:52 pm

October 10th, 2008 at 5:06 pm
Carlos Whoiz? Great job by the ‘kid’
October 10th, 2008 at 5:06 pm
HOLY CRAP BRETT
October 10th, 2008 at 5:07 pm
I think the word Myers used to describe his hitting after the Sabathia duel as terrible, maybe some guys just hit better in October…
October 10th, 2008 at 5:07 pm
Myers is on fire at the plate!
October 10th, 2008 at 5:07 pm
No one can stop the offensive presence that is Brett Myers.
(Serious condolences to Charlie and his family)
October 10th, 2008 at 5:08 pm

October 10th, 2008 at 5:08 pm

October 10th, 2008 at 5:08 pm

October 10th, 2008 at 5:11 pm

October 10th, 2008 at 5:11 pm
this is that ONE big inning!
October 10th, 2008 at 5:11 pm
Oh this is a big big inning
You can just hear the commentators crying into their microphones.
October 10th, 2008 at 5:11 pm
“the key at-bat this inning was obviously brett myers” – nice commentary guys!
October 10th, 2008 at 5:12 pm
This is amazing!
October 10th, 2008 at 5:13 pm
The Beat LA chant is intense here at the stadium
October 10th, 2008 at 5:13 pm
Ruiz + Pitchers = Love from me.
October 10th, 2008 at 5:14 pm
Yea, Rob, that sounded pretty deafening.
October 10th, 2008 at 5:14 pm
what was the general consensus? utley and howard had to heat up the bats? how wrong we all were…
October 10th, 2008 at 5:15 pm

October 10th, 2008 at 5:15 pm
I just blinked, and now it’s 4-1!? SWEET!!!
October 10th, 2008 at 5:16 pm
i really think he’s crying! hahahahah
October 10th, 2008 at 5:16 pm
Chances of Ryan Howard seeing a fastball?
October 10th, 2008 at 5:17 pm
He’s either crying or sweating under his eyes.
October 10th, 2008 at 5:17 pm
He’s only tearing up, no tears have streamed down his face yet, but they are about to. The black Adam Dunn is at it again…
October 10th, 2008 at 5:17 pm
C’mon Howard, just get on…
October 10th, 2008 at 5:18 pm
Crap Howard. Oh well… I’ll take a 4 spot.
October 10th, 2008 at 5:19 pm
“is billingsly crying?!”
No.
October 10th, 2008 at 5:20 pm
1 – jroll
2 – shane
3 – chase
4 – brett myers
that’s the top of the order next time brett starts… hah!
October 10th, 2008 at 5:20 pm
I would be crying if I gave up hits to Chooch and the pitcher, just sayin’.
October 10th, 2008 at 5:22 pm

October 10th, 2008 at 5:32 pm
Oof, there’s the downside to starting Dobbs…
October 10th, 2008 at 5:34 pm
YES. alright – great job there by myers limiting the damage.
October 10th, 2008 at 5:34 pm
huge strikeout!
October 10th, 2008 at 5:34 pm
This is a pretty wild game
October 10th, 2008 at 5:34 pm
Get feliz loose
October 10th, 2008 at 5:37 pm
There you go Brett, no big innings for them. Big strikeout there!
October 10th, 2008 at 5:37 pm

October 10th, 2008 at 5:41 pm
come on Ruiz!
October 10th, 2008 at 5:41 pm
I would say Pat. That’s like 110 yards, Pat has to pick up some steam at some point I would hope.
October 10th, 2008 at 5:42 pm
ummm, brett another big single? haha lets see it!
October 10th, 2008 at 5:43 pm

October 10th, 2008 at 5:43 pm
Myers is a hitting machine!
October 10th, 2008 at 5:44 pm
my earlier post: brett better bat cleanup next time around!!!
October 10th, 2008 at 5:44 pm
‘Manny’ Myers does it again
October 10th, 2008 at 5:44 pm
Fear him at the plate. Myers is a beast!
October 10th, 2008 at 5:47 pm
I remember when he came back from the minors, one of his first games Meyers pulled out a real clutch double down the line and I thought he had a good approach, but I never saw that again till these playoffs!
October 10th, 2008 at 5:50 pm
To quote Tim from his NLCS preview regarding Chan Ho Park:
“If he enters a game at the Bank, Joe Torre is having a problem.”
October 10th, 2008 at 5:50 pm
Brett Myers is the next Reggie Jackson
October 10th, 2008 at 5:51 pm
unbelievable baseball here.
October 10th, 2008 at 5:51 pm
chug chug chug chug as Myers rounds third..
October 10th, 2008 at 5:51 pm
VICTORINO! triple love.
October 10th, 2008 at 5:51 pm
STOMP STOMP STOMP
October 10th, 2008 at 5:52 pm
Ya know we’ve still only scored in 3 innings so far this series :O)
October 10th, 2008 at 5:53 pm
Myers scored from FIRST!
Wow!
October 10th, 2008 at 5:55 pm
Yeah, 2 out of 12 Craig!
October 10th, 2008 at 5:55 pm
3 even!
October 10th, 2008 at 5:56 pm
Howard doesn’t stand a chance.
October 10th, 2008 at 5:58 pm
That’s good – show Howard’s stats with the bases loaded when there’s only runners on 1st and 3rd.
October 10th, 2008 at 6:01 pm
Nice AB by Howard. Hopefully build a little confidence for the big fella.
October 10th, 2008 at 6:02 pm
The Phils are really rubbing it in tonight like an LA hooker, the Dodger players are probably pretty familiar with the feeling…
October 10th, 2008 at 6:05 pm
only two phils without hits- chase and Ryan
October 10th, 2008 at 6:05 pm
How about a big hit for Pat on his birthday here!
October 10th, 2008 at 6:06 pm
Ah damn
October 10th, 2008 at 6:07 pm
Left work early to catch the 2nd half of the game. 8-2? Seriously? That’s one of the sexiest things I have ever seen.
October 10th, 2008 at 6:12 pm
that sucksssssssssssss
October 10th, 2008 at 6:16 pm
Oh FFS
October 10th, 2008 at 6:16 pm
Manny holding up 1 finger? Really? Lets calm it down – your gonna need another one of those just to tie it up.
October 10th, 2008 at 6:16 pm
blah, hate Manny.
October 10th, 2008 at 6:16 pm
….. Dammit Brett!
October 10th, 2008 at 6:17 pm
Well that sucked
October 10th, 2008 at 6:17 pm
Manny can eat a ****
October 10th, 2008 at 6:17 pm
Manny’s a douche
October 10th, 2008 at 6:18 pm
And now Manny is yelling at Myers saying something along the lines of “all day!” This guy is a character.
October 10th, 2008 at 6:19 pm
Some needle between Manny and Brett.
I can see Brett taking Manny out any day of the week.
October 10th, 2008 at 6:19 pm
That strikeout/wild pitch really hurt.
October 10th, 2008 at 6:21 pm
If Manny is up with nobody on, 2 outs – I’d put him on his ass.
October 10th, 2008 at 6:22 pm
FYI: This sounds like fun!!

October 10th, 2008 at 6:31 pm

October 10th, 2008 at 6:32 pm
whats up with jimmy….is he going to show up tonight?
October 10th, 2008 at 6:43 pm
pretty good inning for brett. nothing is going to be easy this series. these are two evenly matched teams. just gotta dig in and battle it out for this win!
October 10th, 2008 at 6:51 pm
This is a really long game, I hope the fans keep their enthusiasm at the park, can’t let this one slip away.
October 10th, 2008 at 6:52 pm
come on Durbin!
October 10th, 2008 at 6:53 pm
I just got online today.God bless June Manuel.Whats worse is,not only a pressure packed game, but playing with a heavy heart for one of your own.To be here for 87 years,I need to paraphrase Jimmy Stewart She lived a wonderful life.
October 10th, 2008 at 6:59 pm
yea, get that Manny out again!
October 10th, 2008 at 7:01 pm
great piece of pitching durbin! just keep taking this game an out at a time.
October 10th, 2008 at 7:04 pm
Yeah Miner, it’s gotta be tough for Charlie to concentrate, I admire him for carrying on.
My dad just turned 87 on Wed and he says every day he wakes up is a shock!
October 10th, 2008 at 7:20 pm
great catch!
October 10th, 2008 at 7:27 pm
said it before, and i’ll say it again- victorino is the best defensive player i’ve ever watched in a phillies uniform.
October 10th, 2008 at 7:27 pm
Ok in my superstition I keep the radio on in my kitchen, after the last out in top of 7th I hear this exchange
Wheels: “I think the umpires are getting together to see if Victorino trapped that ball”
Harry: “No I think its for God Bless America”
Wheels is a jack ass but McCarver is far worse
October 10th, 2008 at 7:34 pm
“McCarver is far worst”. That is the understatment of the year. If the good guys weren’t winning the games these playoffs would be unwatchable.
October 10th, 2008 at 7:35 pm
yeah the fox broadcasters have been terrible tonight. “this philadelphia crowd has gone from exuberance to concern,” cue the philly crowd going nuts chanting “BEAT LA!! BEAT LA!!”
October 10th, 2008 at 7:35 pm
Madson is the man!
October 10th, 2008 at 7:46 pm
three outs to go. great job by the bullpen to get to lidge without any further damage.
BELIEVE IN BRAD
October 10th, 2008 at 7:46 pm
Lets see Lidge do his job
October 10th, 2008 at 7:47 pm
Lights out Lidge time
October 10th, 2008 at 7:52 pm
2 outs to go
October 10th, 2008 at 7:54 pm
This stadium is hype
October 10th, 2008 at 7:59 pm
1 out to go, come on Lidge!
October 10th, 2008 at 8:00 pm
Phillies win!
October 10th, 2008 at 8:01 pm
WTF were they swinging at?!?!?! Half those pitches were like a foot off the plate and at the ankles. They suck.
October 10th, 2008 at 8:07 pm
YES LET’S GO PHILLIES!!!
If we win on Sunday that would be great.
October 10th, 2008 at 8:08 pm
what a start to this series. great, great baseball. i’m loving every moment of this!!
October 10th, 2008 at 8:14 pm
After 7 there was nothing on the comments haha. Guess most of you were way too involved in the game — like me.

Breathtaking, really. But as the goodphight points out, Ryan Madson has been awesome down the stretch. Ridiculous.

Ya know, I actually have to agree with Joe Buck and/or Tim McCarver on something. They commented on Madson’s velocity improving of late and suggested it was because he went from a 2+ innung guy to a one-inning set up man. Less fatigue on his arm = stronger = more velocity.
So do the Phils sign this guy to a long-term contract, give him another 1-year deal, or let him go to arbitration. I’d lock this guy up. He has shown some incredible progress this year, and I think we have either a stud set up man, or a future closer on our hands. Sign him now and sign him cheap before he realizes his potential and wants tens of millions.
