2008 National League Championship Series Preview
Part VI : From The Other Side
The Blogger: Jon Weisman
The Web site: Dodger Thoughts (www.dodgerthoughts.baseballtoaster.com)
Weismann is one of the more respected baseball bloggers out there, and Dodger Thoughts is a well-done fan blog, one Peter Gammons cited as a daily read. I asked Weismann some questions in preparation for the NLCS. Here’s what he had to say, with my questions in red:
The Phillies’ last opponent, the Brewers, probably wouldn’t have made the postseason if not for CC Sabathia. Can you say the same about the Dodgers and Manny Ramirez?
That’s fair to say, although I don’t think it was out of the realm of possibility for the Dodgers to beat Arizona head-to-head without Manny. But I’m sure not going to be the one to argue that he wasn’t critical. Everything that Andruw Jones was supposed to be wasn’t; Ramirez was that and more.
Are you shocked the Dodgers swept the Cubs in the NLDS? Or did you see that coming?
Definitely didn’t see the sweep coming. I was cautiously optimistic the Dodgers might win the series, emphasis on “cautiously.” I still wonder what would have happened had Lou taken out Ryan Dempster before James Loney came to bat in Game 1.
Say the Phillies shut down Ramirez. Which one offense player has to step up to win the series for the Dodgers?
Well, the strength of the Dodgers offensively, besides Ramirez, is that the lineup has become pretty strong one-through-eight. It’s instructive that Ramirez did not have the critical hit in any of the NLDS games. You obviously want to see the guys batting behind Ramirez, such as James Loney and Andre Ethier, do well in the event the Phillies walk Ramirez intentionally, but I think there are any number of potential heroes.
I love the Dodgers balance of tried experience and energetic youth. It seems the latter has stepped up lately. Are you concerned about the way the young guys will respond to being in the NLCS limelight?
Not really. Even the two kids who struggled the most against Chicago, Matt Kemp and Ethier, still had their moments, chipping in with walks here or a double there. I mean, they’ll do well or they won’t, but I don’t think pressure is going to be an issue.
What does Rafael Furcal give this team that they didn’t have while he was out?
He offers great on-base skill at the top of the lineup and allows guys like Kemp or Russell Martin to bat lower, thus lengthening the lineup, as I alluded to before. I mean, I doubt I need to tell you the difference between having Furcal leading off or having Angel Berroa batting eighth.
Of the bench bats, who should Phillies relievers be most concerned about?
At this point, unless they get a spot start, Nomar Garciaparra and Jeff Kent will be coming off the bench. That’s not what they’ve done most of their careers — careers that are winding down — but they’re still pretty good guys to have in reserve.
Derek Lowe, going game one, should be very effective against the Phils. But how can you beat him?
The biggest worry when Lowe pitches is that the defense behind him will let him down. It helps that Furcal is back in there, but this is still not an exceptional defensive team.
The Phillies had moderate success against Chad Billingsley, and a lot of success against Clayton Kershaw. Concern about these two big arms against the Phils big bats?
I’m not a big fan of drawing conclusions about how well a team does against a pitcher based on a start or three. Just too small a sample size. But I’m always concerned every single game. The Phillies have a great lineup. And Kershaw is very young; he can get into trouble. He also won’t have pitched in a game in a couple weeks. I think he’ll do better pitching at home if he starts game four (though I still tend to think Lowe will get that start). Billingsley has arrived; there are very few pitchers I’d rather see on the mound. But pitching in Philadelphia is no walk in the park for anyone.
It’s possible the series will be determined in the bullpens. Of all the arms back there, whose are you most skeptical about pitching in a tight game?
Chan Ho Park has slumped in the second half and gives up home runs at a high rate. But he’s fallen a ways down the depth chart.
Not asking for a drop-dead prediction, but how close does this series look to you?
I don’t know how you can confidently predict the outcome of a series between two teams who swept each other in the same month. It’s a close series that could still be a romp for either team …

You guys are going to want to read this one. It is sure to stir up some Hulk-like feelings towards this guy and LA.

Tip to 700Level for finding this.
October 9th, 2008 at 10:16 am
Another great post, Tim. Thanks!
SJ Mike, that guy needs to be crushed. Perhpas LA and the national media are putting too much pressure on the Dodgers… and, hopefully, it willl all backfire.
October 9th, 2008 at 10:25 am
Just makes me laugh that the guy from smog-ville USA with one of the dirtiest cities in air quality or all around, well, dirt, mixed with well documented corruption, gang violence, drugs, hookers, etc. is calling our city dungy.
October 9th, 2008 at 10:27 am
BTW, here’s 700Level’s post on it where I found the article.

Mike, I saw that article yesterday when I was curiously perusing for Dodger news. Beat me to the post. The guy is a total douche. I especially enjoy that one of his reasons for the Dodgers will win because it’s destiny that they meet the Red Sox in the Series. At the same time, I read somewhere a few weeks ago that it was destiny for the two Chicago teams to meet in the Series…I don’t know how much you can trust “destiny” with your picks
October 9th, 2008 at 10:33 am
Wilson, I posted something about this yesterday in regards to Jim Rome Is Burning. Rome already declared the Manny’s, erh, I mean the Dodgers winners so he can have his pipe dream of facing the Red Sox. The kicker to it was he followed it up with “No disrespect to the Rays, I love them, and no disrespect to the Phillies.”
October 9th, 2008 at 10:36 am
I hate all that team of destiny bullshit. It seems like every year there’s a new team of destiny, until they get eliminated in the first round, then its someone else.
October 9th, 2008 at 10:39 am
Apparently you acquire “team of destiny” power when you beat a “team of destiny,” sort of like in Mega Man games.
October 9th, 2008 at 10:47 am
I’d rather be a “team of density.”

SJ Mike, I just read the article. Is this guy totally serious or is it supposed to be some kind of joke? Jamie Moyer = Softball pitcher? Someone should tell this guy Moyer has been a lot better than Kuroda or whatever the hell that guys name is. And advantage Lowe? Cole was unbelievable in his first star of the post-season and they’re playing in Philly. This guy is just talking straight out of his ass.
October 9th, 2008 at 10:53 am
I’m curious how many people are going to write him angry emails. I’m tempted to, but that would just give him the satisfaction that he’s a naive idiot.
October 9th, 2008 at 10:56 am
SJ Mike, I wrote him an email calling him a f*cking terrorist. What a disgrace. It’s one thing to bash the Phillies, it’s another to say complete lies about them. And then he goes on to bash American history? I asked him if he hates America? I told him how his city is relatively new to the grand scheme of things in this country, and the only reason it became popular was because there was gold in California. I’m sure he didn’t know that though. He obviously doesn’t know anything about American History.
October 9th, 2008 at 11:02 am
Please, people, this guy is not worth our time. Don’t email him or anything. Specimens like him thrive on angry people reading his stuff.
Let our Phils shut him up.
October 9th, 2008 at 11:03 am
hahaha… I thought I would be the only one to email that dude… I just sent it like 2 minutes ago
I told him its amazing that 100 year old Jamie Moyer can be so effective throwing big, slow softballs to professional hitters… dudes like that suck at life, and probably didn’t even talk about the Dodgers until they got Manny, who by the way, won’t be a factor in this series!
October 9th, 2008 at 11:03 am
Wow just read that article. What a certified jackass. “Brett Myers, who has more losses than wins.” That’s the best hes got? Pointing out his record which is not indicative of his 2nd half? Apparently he didn’t see Brett after the he came back up and honestly he most likely didn’t because hes probably been to busy giving Manny verbal fellatio. But there’s no way he missed Game 2 against CC. I can’t believe that passes as sportswriting in LA. Pathetic
October 9th, 2008 at 11:05 am
I have to say, though, the few Dodgers fans that have been on here so far have been very polite, I was beginning to think they were all like that-apparently NOT. That guy totally dissed us, our team, and our town, and now let’s beat the crap out of those west coast wussies.
October 9th, 2008 at 11:08 am
Georgie, I agree, the fans seem very passive and lethargic, which is the stereotype of West Coast fans.
It’s been the media and sportswriters who have been smug and overall, well, stupid.
October 9th, 2008 at 11:22 am
Passive and lethargic or smug and stupid? Are those the only options you’re giving us?
October 9th, 2008 at 11:30 am
Jon, with all due respect, the city and the team has been underestimated, disrespected, and overall stomped on near and far. So there is a lot of bottled up frustration amongst us Phillie fans in reference to the perception of our great city and team, especially by LA based media outlets.
You’d think that the Phillies were playing the Manny’s and not the Dodgers the way it has been covered.
October 9th, 2008 at 11:41 am
One of the Yahoo experts has the Dodgers winning because Manny Ramirez has 10 HR off of Jamie Moyer in his career!!
As if that is a legit reason to pick a team to win a best-of-seven…
October 9th, 2008 at 11:46 am
i wrote that douchefag an email detailing his ‘forgetfulness’ that their prized japanese import ALSO has more losses than wins… we better wave the snot out of those towels whenever matt kemp steps up to the plate… he’s shakeable… i’m praying for a phils/rays series so the idiots in the media will have to actually research a series for once…
October 9th, 2008 at 11:58 am
HEY BARACK THE ONLY CHANGE UP WE WANT IS FROM COLE HAMMELS
October 9th, 2008 at 12:07 pm
SJ – I understand all that, but I’d just offer that an eye for an eye isn’t necessarily the best solution. There are plenty of Dodger fans who cared about the team long before Manny arrived and realize he’s not the entire story. From reading your comment, it’s like we can’t win: If we don’t treat you like jerks, then we’re passive and lethargic.
Taking T.J. Simers seriously is a huge, huge mistake. Would you like our opinions on Philadelphia to depend on one sports columnist who is out to get attention?
October 9th, 2008 at 12:16 pm
Jon, most national opinions on Philadelphia sports are based off of these kind of columnists. TJ Simers is one of a million who writes this fabricated nonsense. Tim had just posted a similar article written by Cathal Kelly for the Toronto Star. Or maybe check out the things that are said on WFAN in New York. Or Jim Rome on his ESPN show. These just to name a few.
The perception is based off of ignrant fools like this. Not to make excuses, but it certainly does get under our skins, mine especially.
October 9th, 2008 at 12:30 pm
But that happens to everyone. There are plenty of stereotypes about Los Angeles that aren’t true, and you don’t seem the least bit concerned about correcting those. A couple of Dodger fans came to this site to comment in good faith, and what was your reward for us?
October 9th, 2008 at 12:43 pm
Then I’m sorry if you feel offended Jon, but the difference is that I’m a common fan voicing an opinion to a couple dozen people at most where Simers is a columnist for an accredited newspaper passing it off as journalism to several million people.
I can understand your frustration with the term ‘lethargic,’ but I don’t see how calling someone passive and civil offensive. I had also said that I agreed that majority of Dodger fans that came here were polite. I think you are reading into that little comment too much and ignoring the overall issue at hand which was Simers’ slam article directed at not only Philly fans, but the city itself.
This is something we have to fight on a daily basis. I personally have to deal with it often with my girlfriend being from North Jersey and all of my friends from up that way are New York fans. You can’t possibly say with a straight face that there is this incredible media bias to trash Philly fans because stories like that are sexier and more appealing.
October 9th, 2008 at 12:45 pm
Typo:
You can’t possibly say with a straight face that there ISN’T this incredible media bias to trash Philly fans because stories like that are sexier and more appealing.
October 9th, 2008 at 12:53 pm
At the risk of repeating myself, you can’t possibly say with a straight face that you think Philadelphia is the only city subject to this same treatment.
How many Manny articles do you think I’ve read that have labeled the people of Los Angeles in all kinds of negative ways?
October 9th, 2008 at 12:57 pm
Basically every city gets talked about negatively at times, but Philly obviously gets it the worst obviously.
October 9th, 2008 at 12:57 pm
There should only be one obviously in that sentence.
October 9th, 2008 at 12:58 pm
The point is is that I’m okay with the media bashing Philadelphia sports. I’m used to it by now. It’s fine. My problem with it is that if you are going to bash Philadelphia sports at least speak the truth. Come up with something meaningful to say. Instead he just says things that aren’t true, like how Moyer sucks because he’s a softball pitcher. He may be a softball pitcher, but he has as many wins as their “ace.” He had a respectable ERA this year. He’s been great. The other problem I had was him bashing Philadelphia which is the historical capital of America, and bashing the history of Philadelphia by poking fun of the liberty bell. Then he has the nerve to call Philly dirty? You can’t even breath in f*cking LA. It’s horribly polluted. Everyone there is a transplant as well. I’m sure at least 50% of the people that live in LA are from somewhere else in the country outside of the west coast. They have to bring in imports of people who think they can go out there and become stars. F*ck those @ssholes.
October 9th, 2008 at 1:00 pm
TJ Simers is but a small blip on a nationwide radar that is against philly for whatever reason… I’ve lived here since 1998 and found it easy to buy into the passionate fans that make up philly sports… I moved from Indiana where the people are actually lethargic but at least they stay til game ends… plus all there is to do out there is baseball or basketball anyways… i guess i’m saying that philly is an easy scapegoat for the trashtalk that is the national media, and it filters down to all facets, including the ignorant rantings of TJ simers…
October 9th, 2008 at 1:03 pm
“My problem with it is that if you are going to bash Philadelphia sports at least speak the truth. … Everyone there (in L.A.) is a transplant as well. I’m sure at least 50% of the people that live in LA are from somewhere else in the country outside of the west coast. ”
If you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem.
Is it so hard to say that someone is wrong about your city without being wrong about someone else’s city? Do you think you’re going to make headway against this problem by being part of it?
October 9th, 2008 at 1:04 pm
i just got an email from MLB saying, “vote for the clutch player of the year”, and CC sabathia is on the ballot! hah yea he was real clutch in the NLDS huh?
October 9th, 2008 at 1:05 pm
I never said it is the only city with that treatment, but it certainly is at the top of the list of negative things to say about when it comes to sports.
And I’ve said from the beginning that it feels like the matchup is the Manny’s vs. the Phillies as opposed to the Dodgers vs. the Phillies. The negative articles are primarily targetted at Manny himself. The negative articles at Philly are pointed at us, the fans and the city.
October 9th, 2008 at 1:08 pm
Jon, I bet if you went out on the streets and asked 1,000 people where they were born and raised that 500 of them would tell you somewhere that isn’t within 200 miles of LA. I know 10 people that moved out there because they were a film major or someone that thinks they can act that went out there and try and make it big. As someone that is really into American history I take offense to someone that bashes the liberty bell. What a disgrace. He should be deported out of the country.
October 9th, 2008 at 1:12 pm
i liked the ‘terrorist’ comment earlier… good stuff…
Jon, all i’m sayin is you seem like a nice enough sports fan who can hold a conversation/debate without idiotic unfounded comments… however when TJ over there bashes the whole city it’s going to get us riled up…
we may be grungy, but at least we have class
October 9th, 2008 at 1:14 pm
Actually there are likely more people in the L.A. area born outside the U.S. than they are people who have moved east now. Los Angeles County has a whopping 36% of its residents born outside the U.S.
October 9th, 2008 at 1:16 pm
Mike, I tend to doubt you’re reading many positive things about the Los Angeles sports culture.
Phil, there’s more to Los Angeles than Hollywood.
Anyway, my only point is that if you don’t like stereotypes, don’t dish ‘em out either.
Here’s to a great series.
October 9th, 2008 at 1:16 pm
And if it’s any consolation, T.J. Simers doesn’t really like Los Angeles much either.
October 9th, 2008 at 1:21 pm
Jon, you are reading too much into a relatively moot comment.
We are on a Phillies blog, so of course we are going to discuss Phillies related issues. It feels that by your nit picky logic that I should be writing about biases and clearing up stereotypes of all 30 teams’ coverage.
I have never once said that there isn’t this perception about Los Angeles and I know there is a lot of negative stuff being written about Manny.
The issue at hand is that we weren’t discussing that, we were discussing TJ Simers’ article. Do you disagree that what he said was smug and stupid? Because you seem to make it seem like what I was saying was that Dodgers fans were smug and stupid, which I certainly wasn’t.
October 9th, 2008 at 1:30 pm
I can’t speak for Jon though I’m pretty sure he feels the same way, but as a Dodger Thoughts commenter and as I posted on another Phillies blog, while you’re welcome to enjoy ripping Simers to shreds, the overriding point is I wouldn’t take anything Simers says seriously at all. He is very often ludicrous in his pronouncements, and just generally a bad writer. No Dodger fans I know take him seriously at all, I know the Dodgers themselves find him incredibly annoying and smug (yes), and so I wouldn’t waste too much time dissecting his nonsense. (But again, hey, if you enjoy it, knock yourselves out!
) I think Phillies fans here and Dodger fans on DT are both better/more knowledgable than Simers, and, heck, we have a game to play. Let’s just enjoy it.
Simers never seems to enjoy much of anything. Sucks to be him.
Good luck!
October 9th, 2008 at 1:31 pm
Plus I think we can all come together in agreement that NY is the smuggiest place on earth.
October 9th, 2008 at 1:37 pm
Craig P, I 100% agree. I hate NY. Glad you are in understanding of why we are so angry.
SJ Mike, you said it best. This is a Phillies blog. Of course we are going to rip that @sshole to shreds for what he said in his article. I have nothing against the Dodgers or their fans at all, but I do have something against a douche bag anti-American who is going to say negative things about my fellow fans and myself.
October 9th, 2008 at 1:42 pm
Craig, I love New York city, don’t get me wrong, just hate their sports in general. I have never been to LA, though I have many friends who have moved out there.
I have nothing against the Dodgers or their fans. I wasn’t even born during our famous NLCS series in the 77, 78, and 83 (born December 83).
And if it is any consolation, we don’t like Tim McCarver much either.
My knowledge on Simers was zero to none prior to reading this, and my point simply is that we deal with this kind of media treatment on a daily basis. You can’t help but become defensive when this kind of “journalism” comes about.
October 9th, 2008 at 1:53 pm
I think that’s fair ‘nuf! As I said, I have no problem with people ripping on Simers. Just be aware that he writes nonsense basically every other day. The only reason he’s not ripped on more frequently in FJM is because he has Bill Plaschke as a colleague, as a distraction. But I understand what you mean.
October 9th, 2008 at 2:10 pm
A short e-mail I sent to our buddy Simers:
Hey look, a rambling, hackneyed, pompous sports “journalist,” who has never been to Philadelphia, writing an article about the Phillies rehashing the same talking points he’s read about for decades but never taken the time to fact check for himself. Have fun sucking down the most polluted air in the country while you call Philly, a beautiful city that puts LA’s architecture and history to shame, dingy. You are a joke, you don’t have an original bone in your body, and your mother, if she’s alive, wishes you did something better with your life.
October 9th, 2008 at 2:57 pm
great letter christopher.
yeah this guy needs a history lesson, and an a$$ whippin. Hopefully revenge will be served when either the Phils win the series or that “journalist” gets carjacked leaving the wheatgrass smoothie cafe.
“If I was President….
even for just one day….
I’d cut off Miami…
and throw it in fu*%ing trash with New York and LA”
