NLDS Game 1 : Brewers At Phillies
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Wed, October 01, 2008 02:15 PM

Game 1 : National League Division Series
Milwaukee Brewers at Philadelphia Phillies
Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia
3 p.m. / 70, possible showers
Yovani Gallardo (0-0, 1.88 ERA) vs. Cole Hamels (14-10, 3.09 ERA)
So here we are, game one of the NLDS. After all the predicting and previewing, it’s gametime. For the Phils to win, Hamels needs to be Hamels. The offense needs to be patient and hope for Gallardo to be wild. Then they can hit him late and hit the Brewers bullpen.
If Hamels is off his game, this will be an extremely tough one to salvage. With CC Sabathia set to throw tomorrow, this game is very important for the Phillies. We can only hope they’re not as nervous as we fans.
News & Notes
Pat Burrell is starting in left field. … Despite facing a righty, it’ll be Pedro Feliz at third base. … Everyone (and all mothers) are picking the Phillies, most in four games. … The Phillies are 4-for-23 against Gallardo with a run (home run). … Hitters are .347 career against Gallardo in the sixth inning.
The Lineup
Jimmy Rollins / SS
Jayson Werth / RF
Chase Utley / 2B
Ryan Howard / 1B
Pat Burrell / LF
Shane Victorino / CF
Pedro Feliz / 3B
Carlos Ruiz / C
Cole Hamels / P
Your Gameday Beer
Back in Philly, at Monk’s, there’s a Belgian beer called St. Bernardus Abt. 12. I had this a while back, and recommended it, saying it was a perfect Belgian Quadrupel. Basically, a Quad is a freakin’ strong beer. St. Bernardus is no exception. It’s delicious, but it will leave you reeling. After one, I was very happy. Have this, or whatever you like, as you cheer on the boys in game one.
Go Phillies!

Gameday!!
October 1st, 2008 at 2:22 pm
I think Cholly should of given Dobbs the start at third base to get another lefty in the lineup.
October 1st, 2008 at 2:23 pm
Check out the challenge that RadioMilwaukee did with Philly’s WXPN. Millwaukee bet case of brats to Philly’s cheesesteaks!
I can’t wait to taste those chessesteaks

Go Phils! Game 1 is VERY important with CC lined up for game 2.
October 1st, 2008 at 2:29 pm
About time you put gameday up Tim. The pep rally was sweet I’d suggest getting here early for it. Greengenes was absolutley amazing. The broadcast crew came out and said some quality words. There was a 2008 montage video and of course, the phanatic.
I got the tix for Game 2 so we are good. Ill catch you tomorrow.
October 1st, 2008 at 2:37 pm
Butterflies in the stomach, excitement in the air. It’s game time!
By the way, anybody find it ridiculous that John Smoltz is calling the game for TBS? I predict he’ll complain about the ballpark 2 times per inning.
October 1st, 2008 at 2:39 pm
Keep your best defensive 3b in the game.. and have your best pinch hitter on your bench. I think thats the right way to go.. Feliz is the starter, its not really a platoon situation.
and Feliz has postseason experience I think with the Giants?? either way he’s solid.
October 1st, 2008 at 2:41 pm
Don, I think also since the majority of the Brewers lineup is right handed, so there are going to be a lot of hook shots going down the 3rd base line. Feliz may not have the best bat, but he’s a solid defender.
October 1st, 2008 at 2:41 pm
Holy Cow this is nerveracking!
October 1st, 2008 at 2:41 pm
Well guys, my dad, who will be 87 next week and lives with his elderly cat whose health has been failing for months, has decided that today is the day we call the vet. Guess when the appt is? Yep, that’s right, 3pm. I love my dad, but JEEZ. Ok, I’m being the supportive daughter and going now, I’ll record the game.
October 1st, 2008 at 2:49 pm
I hope Burrell is actually feeling 100% b/c if he’s not and he’s in there, that wont help us any.
October 1st, 2008 at 2:49 pm
Enjoy the game, everyone! I’m going to watch on the big TV downstairs for this one.
October 1st, 2008 at 2:50 pm
About time? Damn, Rob.
October 1st, 2008 at 2:50 pm
LETS GO PHILS. WOOOOOOOOOOOOO IM PUMPED
October 1st, 2008 at 2:53 pm

Go Phils!!!!!!!
October 1st, 2008 at 2:56 pm
Yeeahhhh Frank Tv circa 2007
October 1st, 2008 at 2:58 pm
Good luck.
October 1st, 2008 at 2:59 pm
The typical talk out here is similar to the conclusions reached on this blog earlier – huge game 1 with CC going in game 2 – they’re hoping they can steal one today and come home up two
October 1st, 2008 at 3:00 pm
I wonder if Hamels will wear long sleeves out there again this year.
October 1st, 2008 at 3:02 pm
I wonder if Cole will throw a strike this year
October 1st, 2008 at 3:03 pm
(Way to shut me up, Cole)
October 1st, 2008 at 3:03 pm
Change up looks spot on today – but this ump is not giving that outside corner at all.
October 1st, 2008 at 3:05 pm
Love the strong start! Now let’s get some runs!
October 1st, 2008 at 3:07 pm
Cole’s got his good stuff this afternoon. Pray that his outing isn’t cut short by rain!
October 1st, 2008 at 3:08 pm
That sky doesn’t look promising out there
October 1st, 2008 at 3:09 pm
Love the patience by Jimmy already.
October 1st, 2008 at 3:09 pm
Good Luck fans……will keep up to date while listening to the rerun of todays Opie and Anthony show on the XM……BTW,is O and A still on WYXP?
October 1st, 2008 at 3:09 pm
Its getting windy and dark fast
October 1st, 2008 at 3:09 pm
no shadows to deal with today
no long sleeves on hamels
no excuses
just win
October 1st, 2008 at 3:11 pm
What do you think Jose Reyes is doing right now?
October 1st, 2008 at 3:12 pm
Reyes is probably choreographing a new dance routine for when he scores a meaningless run next May
October 1st, 2008 at 3:12 pm
Thunder and lightening
October 1st, 2008 at 3:15 pm
How can you bring up the Mets when the Phillies are in the playoffs?
Phillies fans were cease to amaze me.
October 1st, 2008 at 3:16 pm
Yea, it’s actually noticeably darker since before the commercial break.
October 1st, 2008 at 3:18 pm
Nice play Utley, thought that ball was sailing out of his hand.
October 1st, 2008 at 3:18 pm
OK, let’s get some hits before the Brewers nervousness wears off…
October 1st, 2008 at 3:19 pm
Because it’s the first game of the playoffs and in addition to the Phillies being in the playoffs, I take enjoyment in the Mets not being in the playoffs. I’m not a player. I don’t have to “focus on the game.” I can focus on David Wright’s teary uni-brown while I listen to Cole Hammels set six down in order.
October 1st, 2008 at 3:20 pm
Wanted Utley batting 2nd. Werth has a problem being a table-setter, whereas Utley showed some flexibility switching between slugging and table-setting. Plus, with the pitcher pitching from the stretch, Werth seemed to hit better when Rollins and Utley got on base in September. Hope Charlie changes this up.
October 1st, 2008 at 3:20 pm
Haha, nicely put Mutley.
October 1st, 2008 at 3:22 pm
BENCH BURRELL NOW
October 1st, 2008 at 3:23 pm
Its raining
October 1st, 2008 at 3:23 pm
Good AB pat. Thought the game plan was to make this guy work.
October 1st, 2008 at 3:23 pm
This should have been a huge inning.
October 1st, 2008 at 3:24 pm
I bet Jenkins could hit into a double play. He might even take a pitch first.
October 1st, 2008 at 3:24 pm
Every guy has made him work except Pat, what the hell is he thinking? And he looked to be wincing pretty bad on that swing.
October 1st, 2008 at 3:25 pm
Stairs could probably do that too
October 1st, 2008 at 3:29 pm
It just started pouring here in center city and appears to be moving south. lets hope we dont have to pull King Cole if the game gets delayed.
October 1st, 2008 at 3:30 pm
Only two position I’m not worried about this postseason: Howard and Victorino.
October 1st, 2008 at 3:32 pm
That looked like Cole’s first mistake – thank you wind!
October 1st, 2008 at 3:32 pm
at bccc in newtown it just stopped.. was going for about 20 mins.. i still hear thunder though
October 1st, 2008 at 3:36 pm
Just looking at the Phils’ performance in 2007: their best hitters, in order:
Ruiz: .333
Howard: .250
Victorino: .222
October 1st, 2008 at 3:36 pm
Chooch. or is it Cooch?
October 1st, 2008 at 3:37 pm
here we go…
October 1st, 2008 at 3:37 pm
YES! Terrible defense.
October 1st, 2008 at 3:37 pm
There it is the flood gates will open
October 1st, 2008 at 3:38 pm
So much for Jimmy’s patience
October 1st, 2008 at 3:38 pm
What was that, Jimmy?
October 1st, 2008 at 3:38 pm
no one should be swinging at the first pitch. no one.
October 1st, 2008 at 3:40 pm
They alreayd opened because I’m soaked
October 1st, 2008 at 3:40 pm
Jesus, Werth is clearly over matched out there.
October 1st, 2008 at 3:43 pm
YES!!!! that’s what I’m talkin about.
October 1st, 2008 at 3:43 pm
YEAH!!!!!
October 1st, 2008 at 3:43 pm
Nice hit!
October 1st, 2008 at 3:43 pm
what a break
October 1st, 2008 at 3:45 pm
take a couple of pitches pat
October 1st, 2008 at 3:47 pm
huge pitch here
October 1st, 2008 at 3:48 pm
That’s the Burrell we know.
October 1st, 2008 at 3:48 pm
good inning. running the starting pitchers count up. get him out the game asap.
October 1st, 2008 at 3:48 pm
Exactly what we needed today. We’re going to get into that Brewer bullpen sooner rather than later – and that’s the place to be.
October 1st, 2008 at 3:49 pm
Go Vitorino…
October 1st, 2008 at 3:50 pm
Sorry thats Victorino
October 1st, 2008 at 3:50 pm
Big.
October 1st, 2008 at 3:52 pm
It has been pouring here in the north east all inning. hope there’s no delay cole’s dealing today!
October 1st, 2008 at 3:59 pm
I’m using the commercial breaks to catch up on Cole Hammels Facts:
http://mysite.verizon.net/heyjude421/chf/chf.html
October 1st, 2008 at 4:01 pm
The most appropriate fact:
“Former Brewers manager Ned Yost was not fired by his GM, Doug Melvin; he resigned rather than risking having to face Cole Hamels again in the playoffs.”
October 1st, 2008 at 4:01 pm
Is Ruiz bunting to test Gallardo? Interesting choice, I’d rather seem him take a shot at it, but at least Hamels is a decent hitting pitcher.
October 1st, 2008 at 4:01 pm
hamels showing hes our ace for sure today
October 1st, 2008 at 4:04 pm
Run Jimmy run
October 1st, 2008 at 4:05 pm
Conference at the mound…
Mike Maddux : Ok here is what were going to do, I’m going to talk as long as I can so the rain gets here.
Kendall : Yeah good idea thats why you are our pitching coach
October 1st, 2008 at 4:10 pm
AWESOME strikeout!
October 1st, 2008 at 4:12 pm
game’s going great so far. the lineup has done a good job taking pitches from gallardo and hamels is DEALING. keep it up guys!
October 1st, 2008 at 4:14 pm
I hope Brett Myers is taking notes.
October 1st, 2008 at 4:16 pm
Hamels for governor
October 1st, 2008 at 4:19 pm
Governor? Dont you mean Supreme Leader of the Universe
October 1st, 2008 at 4:19 pm
Cole “The Comish” Hammels, all he needs is a sweet moutasche
October 1st, 2008 at 4:19 pm
Hamels is tossing for arbitration right now. He keeps this up through the playoffs and I’ll pitch in for part of his salary.
October 1st, 2008 at 4:20 pm
Phils payroll will see a significant boost next year? I feel like it will need to.
October 1st, 2008 at 4:23 pm
Howard was laying off that stuff in September, he needs to settle down.
October 1st, 2008 at 4:24 pm
Hamels for Grand Glorious Supreme Pubah
October 1st, 2008 at 4:25 pm
Evan, with 50 sellout games this year, if the ownership doesn’t pay each of these kids what they rightfully deserve, I will be pissed.
October 1st, 2008 at 4:28 pm
A randall simon sighting
October 1st, 2008 at 4:28 pm
hamels will get a longterm contract soon. none of the key pieces to the phils roster are going anywhere in the near future except maybe burrell.
October 1st, 2008 at 4:29 pm
Maybe the funniest mid inning skit ever concieved
October 1st, 2008 at 4:33 pm
Don’t worry about what David Wright,Jose Reyes,Billy Wagner or what anyone on the Mets are doing.Your Phils are in the playoffs and thats ALL that should matter to you.Only 134 more days til Pitchers and Catchers.
October 1st, 2008 at 4:34 pm
This is the big moment for Cole in the game – need to bear down and get through this inning. He does that, and this is a win.
October 1st, 2008 at 4:35 pm
miner, nobody is actually wondering what those players are doing. just rubbing it in a little.
October 1st, 2008 at 4:36 pm
Great pitch to Hall!
October 1st, 2008 at 4:36 pm
Way to go Cole!!
October 1st, 2008 at 4:37 pm
Great work. Prince is up with no one on, and after that it’s smooth sailing.
October 1st, 2008 at 4:37 pm
Miner, we’re the NL East Champs, you can’t just tell us what to do
October 1st, 2008 at 4:37 pm
Hamels is pitching great! Go Phillies!
October 1st, 2008 at 4:38 pm
lol…I know you guys are rubbing it in,its all good.My point was to face your concern about the Phillies…we all know the Mets are toast….and BTW,I just found out David Wright and Mike Pelfrey have reservations for the Douglaston Golf Course in Queens…They tee off tomorrow at 9:AM.
October 1st, 2008 at 4:39 pm
If his pitch count is under 100 after 7, do they send him out for the 8th?
October 1st, 2008 at 4:40 pm
Chase….get a grip.
October 1st, 2008 at 4:43 pm
Plus Chase…..YOU didn’t win the NL East,The Phillies did.I tipped my Mets cap to the Phils for winning.Mets don’t deeserve to be here today, they lost.As I said Sunday, the better team won in the Phillies and Brewers.I have no shame in admitting that.
October 1st, 2008 at 4:44 pm
On TV they just showed a shot of Hamels and Myers talking to Jamie Moyer…Great stuff..Hope they were both listening .
Jamie Moyer is a great influence..
October 1st, 2008 at 4:44 pm
Miner, seriously, sometimes you lay the “good sportmanship” stuff on too thick and the boy scount routine is getting old. This is a Phillies blog. I enjoy your insights at times and appreciate that you’re not a jerk, but honestly you can’t come on to a team’s blog and tell their fans what they should or shouldn’t be talking about. If I want to think about Jerry Manual getting “gangsta” in his Lazy-Boy right now, and other Phillies fans want to laugh about it, we will.
October 1st, 2008 at 4:46 pm
Some great defense behind Hamels in this inning.
October 1st, 2008 at 4:47 pm
Shhh about that team that didn’t make the playoffs – we’ve got a gem unfolding! Why do you think they pulled Gallardo so early? Three runs, 75 pitches is not the end of the world… think they want to have him as a relief option in game 3 or 4?
About the CG: the post-season is long (well, hopefully) – I sure hope they don’t stretch Hamels more than necessary on a cold, rainy day.
October 1st, 2008 at 4:47 pm
And that’s why we have Pedro in there – to reference the first comment of the thread.
October 1st, 2008 at 4:48 pm
Okay but 90 pitches, he should come back out for the 8th.
October 1st, 2008 at 4:48 pm
75 was probably the max for Gallardo – he’s not 100% yet.
October 1st, 2008 at 4:49 pm
I think they pulled Gallardo cause he’s an unknown. The Brewers weren’t looking for him to go far, just far enough. Better to get him out quick than leave him in too long.
October 1st, 2008 at 4:51 pm
stratfor- This is only Gallardo’s 2nd start since returning from a knee injury. He was on a very tight pitch count, it was a major storyline to this game.
October 1st, 2008 at 4:51 pm
Good,I laugh about the Lay-z-boy gettin gangsta.I can come in here and start yelling (Insert team here) sucks, but I am better than that.Believe you me,I am no boy scout either.I do have friends who are Phillies fans as well,so I always respect their opinions as they respect mine and share that here.I just laid a joke on my Mets prior,in case you missed it.
October 1st, 2008 at 4:51 pm
I was pretty impressed by Gallardo. Despite the score, the Phillies only have 3 hits in this game.
October 1st, 2008 at 4:53 pm
Gallardo walks two in a row, including walking in a run? He wasn’t awful but that’s not something you can forgive.
October 1st, 2008 at 4:54 pm
Fair enough. I guess it’s because I was expecting a hit parade off of him.
October 1st, 2008 at 4:56 pm
Sheesh, the offense is too reminiscent of last year’s playoffs.
October 1st, 2008 at 4:58 pm
Werth. What the hell. Have you been good since that Cubs series? Pull a pair of clean underwear on and get a good at-bat for once.
October 1st, 2008 at 5:04 pm
Lidge, right?
October 1st, 2008 at 5:05 pm
Cole has been on cruise control since the sixth. Great pitching. Hope the bats wake up tomorrow.
October 1st, 2008 at 5:05 pm
Its no coincidence that Hamels has pitched so well today after so many days rest……He needed some rest..He was 2nd in the league after Santana in innings pitched
October 1st, 2008 at 5:06 pm
I would think Lidge
October 1st, 2008 at 5:06 pm
If Hamels feels like he can pitch one more inning, let him.
October 1st, 2008 at 5:07 pm
putting gallardo in was a big mistake by the brewers management. he is the most important pitcher to their organization’s future and they may have seriously screwed up his career rushing him back into a game like this. but hey, i’m not complaining, worked out fine for the phils!
October 1st, 2008 at 5:09 pm
Gallardo didn’t implode, I think he’ll be fine.
I wanna see Hamels finish this game! I don’t think we need Lidge.
October 1st, 2008 at 5:10 pm
Just got in from dinner and man it looks like Cole has arrived for all to see. For all that don’t believe this guy is a legitimate ace here’s his coming out party.
Great going Phils, loving the walk numbers.
October 1st, 2008 at 5:11 pm
Gallardo did okay. If the Brewers were hitting Cole at all it’d be looked at as an okay decision. Having your pitching staff hold the Phils to 3 ain’t bad.
October 1st, 2008 at 5:13 pm
Dd we just get some production out of the 5 spot?
October 1st, 2008 at 5:13 pm
Dobbs here?
October 1st, 2008 at 5:16 pm
I guess not with a lead.
October 1st, 2008 at 5:20 pm
Lights out Lidge!!
October 1st, 2008 at 5:21 pm
Let’s hope so
October 1st, 2008 at 5:22 pm
Not sure my heart can take another bases-loaded double play though.
October 1st, 2008 at 5:22 pm
i’m not saying gallardo did poorly. i’m saying that who knows what shape his ACL is in now after being rushed back from the injury and making two starts. also the brewers bullpen, not a strongpoint of the team to start with, has now seen a lot of work in just the first game as a result of the decision to use gallardo. just bad for the brewers all around.
bring it home lidge!
October 1st, 2008 at 5:23 pm
I’d prefer bringing Hamels out to at least start the inning. If Lidge gets wild this could get scary quick.
October 1st, 2008 at 5:23 pm
Lights out Lidge time!
October 1st, 2008 at 5:23 pm
Holy shit I’m freaking out (again)! Lidge has been perfect yet still makes me scared as shit
October 1st, 2008 at 5:24 pm
C’mon Lidge. Time to kill those demons!
October 1st, 2008 at 5:24 pm
I agree with you NEPA. Oh well, nothing we can do now..Let’s just watch
October 1st, 2008 at 5:25 pm
huge strike out there!
October 1st, 2008 at 5:27 pm
This guy Braun better not get on base….
October 1st, 2008 at 5:28 pm
Filder vs. Lidge: 4-7, 2HRs
NOW I’M FREAKING OUT
Why didn’t we keep Hamels?
October 1st, 2008 at 5:29 pm
Two to go!
October 1st, 2008 at 5:29 pm
OMG! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
LIDGE WTF ARE YOU DOING!!
October 1st, 2008 at 5:29 pm
that was so ugly
October 1st, 2008 at 5:30 pm
blah, come on Lidge!
October 1st, 2008 at 5:31 pm
I hope Mitch Williams didn’t jinx Lidge
October 1st, 2008 at 5:31 pm
Dumbest move of the year taking hamels out
October 1st, 2008 at 5:31 pm
To me, this was a no brainer – Hamels was basically unhittable today. Why not leave him in?
October 1st, 2008 at 5:32 pm
Let me know what happens I turned the game off
October 1st, 2008 at 5:32 pm
Please Lidge strike him out!!
October 1st, 2008 at 5:34 pm
Shit Shit Shit Shit… I can’t take this anymore
October 1st, 2008 at 5:35 pm
1 out to go!
October 1st, 2008 at 5:35 pm
YEAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!
Ok one more out..please, Lidge?
October 1st, 2008 at 5:35 pm
Should have left him in, but Lidge is doing what he’s done all inning – making us sweat, and then getting the outs.
October 1st, 2008 at 5:35 pm
Come on Lidge!
October 1st, 2008 at 5:37 pm
Ahhh!!! I’m going into cardiac arrest
October 1st, 2008 at 5:37 pm
hmm . . . come on Lidge.
October 1st, 2008 at 5:38 pm
This is nuts!
October 1st, 2008 at 5:38 pm
I just couldn’t see how Hamels could have given up 3 runs, he was pitching unbelievable.
October 1st, 2008 at 5:38 pm
OMG>>>>>>> wtf
FINISH THIS SHIT ALREADY
October 1st, 2008 at 5:39 pm
my heart is POUNDING!
October 1st, 2008 at 5:40 pm
As usual Lidge gives his typical “cardiac” ending…I think I’ll call 911 now
October 1st, 2008 at 5:40 pm
Sweet.
October 1st, 2008 at 5:40 pm
WE WON!!!!!!!!!
October 1st, 2008 at 5:40 pm
HUGE SIGH OF RELIEF!
October 1st, 2008 at 5:40 pm
Phillies win!!!
October 1st, 2008 at 5:40 pm
YAYAYAYAYYAYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
October 1st, 2008 at 5:41 pm
Lidge strikes out the side, but sure makes you sweat it out!
October 1st, 2008 at 5:41 pm
35 pitches for Lidge.
Is that him out of tomorrows game?
October 1st, 2008 at 5:42 pm
Does he absolutely have to do it that way every time?
October 1st, 2008 at 5:42 pm
A lil’ nerve wracking, but awesome win today!
October 1st, 2008 at 5:43 pm
Craig: We won’t need him. Myers is getting a complete game tomorrow.
October 1st, 2008 at 5:43 pm
Why didn’t Charlie leave Cole in for the ninth? He was pitching so well. Lidge just drove me crazy there. I’m nervous about him.
October 1st, 2008 at 5:43 pm
Cole Hamels was incredible, Lidge managed to hold on still (he’s scaring me more and more recently). Still, a great game 1 win. Now up to Myers to match C.C. tomorrow. Go Phils!
October 1st, 2008 at 5:44 pm
Hamels for the Ashburn
October 1st, 2008 at 5:44 pm
GREAT start to the series. the biggest start of hamels’ career by far. hopefully myers delivers big tomorrow!
i’ve got to hand it to smoltz, i groaned when i saw he was commentating, but he did a nice job on color. he knows both teams really well.

Ryan, you gotta give Lidge credit. 41 out of 41 is not just luck.
October 1st, 2008 at 5:46 pm
In September, our time machine brought us back the Mets of 2007. In October, we’re visiting the Wild Thing in 1993.

Lidge is very dependent on people swinging and missing. The more people are patient, the more we get into saves like this.
October 1st, 2008 at 5:53 pm
Tomorrow watch CC blow up…
October 1st, 2008 at 5:54 pm
The Phils do have historically good numbers against Sabathia.
October 1st, 2008 at 5:54 pm
Who cares we won. We won’t win if the ofeense stays like this tommorow against sabathia but hell ya we won
October 1st, 2008 at 5:55 pm
Don’t get me wrong, I’m very happy that the Phillies have Lidge (remember last year?). But he drives me crazy. Hopefully Myers can pitch well tomorrow and Sabathia won’t be as beastly.
October 1st, 2008 at 5:55 pm
Maybe the greatest sporting event I ever attended
October 1st, 2008 at 5:58 pm
Im guessing people said this already… but how much did the Brewers today remind you of the Phillies in the postseason last year!!! Lets step on their throats, kick ‘em while they’re down, etc..
Uhmmm YoVani GallardWHO?? Nice 4 innings there.. Shame he’s hurt cause is really is a great pitchers, and give him credit for coming back at all this year.
First Phillies playoff win since I was 10 years old.. Its a great day!
October 1st, 2008 at 5:59 pm
Just to add my two cents: I absolutely do not understand the decision to pull Hamels for Lidge, who has taken several years off my life over the last month. Hamels is your ace, he’s gone eight innings giving up no runs on two hits and 9 Ks, and he’s right at a hundred pitches. Charlie absolutely should have sent him back out there. I would think this makes Lidge unavailable tomorrow.
October 1st, 2008 at 5:59 pm
Wow nice to win today game…I’m still not happy with Cholly pulling Hamels for Lidge because Hamels was crusing along and Lidge threw alot of pitches in that 9th and prolly won’t be avaliable tomorrow…I’m already dreading having to face CC tomorrow because the bats weren’t really swining today we just had a good inning and he’s very dominate.
October 1st, 2008 at 6:00 pm
Only if Hamels *asked* to come out of the game would this make any sense
October 1st, 2008 at 6:02 pm
Oh yea…. HAMELS IS AN ACE!!!
October 1st, 2008 at 6:03 pm
Hamels was brilliant today. Good monkey off our back with this win today!
October 1st, 2008 at 6:05 pm
Lidge is relying on that down in the dirt slider alot and hitters just aren’t chasing it.
October 1st, 2008 at 6:07 pm
Anyone here the Mets score today?????
October 1st, 2008 at 6:08 pm
I wish I was hearing Harry, TMac, Wheels, and hate to admit it, even Sarge today.
Just feel kind of dirty hearing John Smoltz try to pay compliments, considering how often he complains about the Phillies, the ballpark, and the city….
October 1st, 2008 at 6:16 pm
Yes! Great win! Hamels dominated!
I was getting worried about the rain. Where I was, it poured. I thought there might be an early rain delay, therefore messing up Hamels. They’d have to go to the pen. Thankfully, that wasn’t the case, and no delay! Hamels was amazing. First postseason win since ‘93! CC tomorrow, gonna be tough. GO PHILLIES!
October 1st, 2008 at 6:35 pm
Wonder how Georgie’s dad’s cat fared today?..hope he’s ok…
October 1st, 2008 at 6:36 pm
it’s gonna take an awful lot for CC to top what our Ace gave for us today. only a CG shutout could possibly top it.
October 1st, 2008 at 6:39 pm
smoltz wasn’t negative about any of that stuff today. he was very fair and insightful on color.
i don’t mind the move to pull hamels. if he were to get into trouble in the ninth, run some pitch counts up, then you take the best start of his career and turn it into something that leaves him feeling uncertain going into the next one.
October 2nd, 2008 at 9:43 am
Isn’t Lidge the closer? Wasn’t that a save situation?? No matter what Manuel did in that spot, people would bitch.. and if he left Hamels in and he lost the lead, people would have asked for Charlies head there.. Lidge has been perfect all year (struggled a lot lately, but still good enough)..
October 2nd, 2008 at 9:47 am
Would have been nice to see Cole finish it out but the way Lidge has been successful has been by dispelling all the myths that followed him so Charlie was right getting him and getting that monkey off his back with every opportunity.
October 2nd, 2008 at 9:58 am
Manuel said after that game if they got any runners on, he would have pulled Hamels anyway.. and that Closers don’t like coming into the game with runners on base..
I think it would have been “cool” to see Hamels go CG, but we didn’t need him to, he did more than we thought he would and didn’t overuse him in the process
October 2nd, 2008 at 10:12 am
Hamels was what weve all been waiting for him to be in a big game, but the bottom line is that even though I think its ok to leave hamels in there, its also ok to put lidge in. Lidge HAS to clean that up a bit. It sounds like his problem is he falls in love with his slider. He throws it the second he gets two strikes and the hitters know it and ALL lay off it now. Lidge has to use his fastball more often and not be afraid to spot it on the corners. Because he throws 94-97, if he spots it that on the inside or outside corner, there arent many hitters in the game who can take that out of the ballpark. His control has to improve, no doubt, but so does his pitch selection. He thrrew close to 40 pitches yesterday, too much for a closer in the 9th inning. way too much.
How much longer can he keep tightroping it? I dont know. You cant walk runners in a save situation. You just cant. Thats unacceptable and its going to eventually bite him. NO WALKS LIDGE.
October 2nd, 2008 at 10:18 am
Its easy to say no walks.. but with a lead.. its alright to nibble, and make sure you don’t get too much of the plate and give their hitters something to drive. I have no complaints with the way Lidge is pitching at all
October 2nd, 2008 at 10:28 am
Yea, but giving them something to drive isn’t that bad when you have no runners on and a 3 run lead. Lidge needs to start throwing the fastball earlier in his saves and make the other team hit him. He’s got a great defense behind him and could use it a little more often now that every save seems to be 25+ pitches. Lidge has avoided giving up the “big hit” with runners on this year. But he’s pressing his luck, and I feel like one of these times he’s going to put 2 or 3 runners on and someone is going to light that fastball up in a 3-2 count when he can’t locate his slider.
October 2nd, 2008 at 10:30 am
And people keep saying “Hey, he’s 42 for 42 (or whatever the number is now), give him a break.” I’m not saying he hasn’t been amazing this year because he has and I think he has been the team MVP. But if he blows a save in really big spot this post season, we’re all going to be sitting here saying “Well we all saw it coming.”
October 2nd, 2008 at 10:40 am
If he blows a save in the postseason i’ll say that it sucks, but he’s been perfect all year, and without him we wouldn’t even be in the postseason..
the thing with Lidge is that its not like he’s trying to throw lots of pitches every time out.. he’s just being careful not to get beat, and when you have the heart of the Brewers lineup coming to bat, you don’t want baserunners in scoring position.
I really think its being too picky for anyone to get on Hamels/Lidge in the 9th, who should have been in.. it was a save situation, they went to the closer, as they should have.. and he didn’t look real sharp, but got the job done anyway… its nice to know that even without his best stuff he can still get it done!

Hey Richie Allen, catching up on posts from yesterday, saw you asking about my dad’s cat, thanks for thinking of us. Unfortunately, she has spots on her lung, so we are going to have to put her to sleep today, I still haven’t told my dad, this is really rough. Later.
