Game 4 : National League Division Series
Phillies lead 2-1
Philadelphia Phillies at Milwaukee Brewers
Miller Park, Milwaukee
1 p.m. / 60, partly cloudy
Joe Blanton (9-12, 4.69 ERA) vs. Jeff Suppan (10-10, 4.96 ERA)
With plenty of chances to win game three and the National League Division Series, the Phillies came up short and surrendered a loss to the Brewers. Now Joe Blanton takes the hill in the biggest game of the season.
The Phils will face Jeff Suppan, who has had a tough year but plenty of playoff success.
News & Notes
Greg Dobbs has the start at third base, hitting seventh in the order. Shane Victorino is back at the two-hole, with Jayson Werth hitting sixth. … In his last start against the Phillies, Suppan pitched just 3.2 innings, giving up six earned runs in a loss. … Blanton lowered his ERA in each of his last four starts, giving up four, three, two and one run respectively. … If the Phils want to reach the NLCS to face the Dodgers, Chase Utley needs to step up. He’s hitting .600 against Suppan.
The Lineup
Jimmy Rollins / SS
Shane Victorino / CF
Chase Utley / 2B
Ryan Howard / 1B
Pat Burrell / LF
Jayson Werth / RF
Greg Dobbs / 3B
Carlos Ruiz / C

Your Gameday Beer
Back to an old favorite: Newcastle Brown Ale. Served at many bars and taprooms in your local vicinity, Newcastle is a traditional English brown, made with a nutty flavor and caramel. Clint Eastwood loves it. So you should too. Here’s the deal: Today is a big game. A must win, almost. Let’s get down to business. Enjoy your beer, cook up some pork roll, and get to the television. Root, root, root for your Phils. Let’s get ‘em to the NLCS.
Go Phillies!

let’s go Phils, beat up on Suppan like you did 3 weeks ago.
October 5th, 2008 at 12:10 pm
I like the lineup a lot. I usually like having Feliz’s defense at third and Dobbs coming off the bench as a PH – but that first pitch swinging DP in the ninth last night pissed me off more than anything all year I think. I don’t want to see Feliz’s face today.
October 5th, 2008 at 12:22 pm
This lineup is goldddddd!!!
October 5th, 2008 at 12:25 pm
Sleepy giants where are thou who sleep and do not even wrestle or yawn
While crowds implore and scorn what you have not done and what you have not borne
You who hold the thunder in your hands and who can disturb the clouds and make it rain
Instead you lay on soft linen beds; is it possible waiting for next year’s game?
What noise attracts your inner soul to make you stand up from your sedimentary role?
Come now remember your past and when you have swung and lay others to rest
Strong horses take your heed, struggle, and wake from your hypnotic sleep
Herculean heroes from the past, you who have stood tall and crushed the small white ball
Awake, awake titans who can no longer nap while we wait for your lumbering blasts
Grab the pitch you who can hit and splinter the wood and silence us all at last
October 5th, 2008 at 12:26 pm
Daddy likes the line-up today. I may switch Werth and Burrell to afford K-How a little more protection, but I like the addition of Dobbs (although Feliz has a nice bat too — and much better defense). Utley is a beast against Suppan, but he’ll likely only get 2 plate appearances against him if all goes well so he has to strike early.
October 5th, 2008 at 12:27 pm
Summary: Utley, Howard and Burrell – start hitting the damn ball.
October 5th, 2008 at 12:36 pm
NEPA, pretty much.
October 5th, 2008 at 12:40 pm
yeah, we need a big day from the middle of our lineup. Let’s get on base early and often and force them to bring a scrote like Marry Parra in the game. Let’s do it.
October 5th, 2008 at 12:42 pm
I don’t care who scores the runs or drives them in. I’ll take a 9 RBI game from Blanton, just as long as I get them.
October 5th, 2008 at 12:55 pm
de ja vu…..from 18 hours ago
October 5th, 2008 at 12:56 pm
why does every flippin playoff’s from MLB to NCAA have to have a damn theme song?
October 5th, 2008 at 12:57 pm
I hope Smoltz chokes on Simpson’s phallus during a TV break. Can’t stand that ass hat.
October 5th, 2008 at 12:59 pm

October 5th, 2008 at 12:59 pm
B-West is back in Philly and the Phils won’t need to go back to Philly untill Manny and co drag their asses over the east cost for game 1 of the NLCS.
October 5th, 2008 at 1:00 pm
Jamie, I’m looking to you to provide the comic relief today if needed. Thanks in advance.

October 5th, 2008 at 1:17 pm
Doesn’t Blanton look the kind of guy/pitcher who still knows how to throw a spitball…?
If the midget can take on to the house Fatty can win us this one!
October 5th, 2008 at 1:17 pm

October 5th, 2008 at 1:23 pm
Hush on the Eagles chatter.
October 5th, 2008 at 1:23 pm
so what will Pat not the Bat do?
October 5th, 2008 at 1:23 pm
Those things are so annoying and are not for baseball. Are they confused by the roof?
October 5th, 2008 at 1:25 pm
We can thank the Angels approx 5 years ago those dang things
October 5th, 2008 at 1:25 pm
holy cow…..Pat got a hit!
October 5th, 2008 at 1:25 pm
dear lord he is slow.
October 5th, 2008 at 1:26 pm
Pat looks very hobbled. His back has to be bothering him – how can Charlie not notice?
October 5th, 2008 at 1:26 pm
Atta’ boy Pat.
October 5th, 2008 at 1:27 pm
jayson werth=largest strike zone in baseball
October 5th, 2008 at 1:28 pm
Pat’s a gamer, he’s in the line-up of his on accord unless he can’t walk.
October 5th, 2008 at 1:29 pm
so far when the phils bat, the eagles have the ball
October 5th, 2008 at 1:30 pm
Did you see Pat smile when he got that hit? I’m glad he’s playing, I like Pat.
October 5th, 2008 at 1:31 pm
damnit werth
October 5th, 2008 at 1:32 pm
Why did Werth look back after swinging? Did he think it was that far outside that the catcher might have missed it? …or was it to ask the ump “Why did I swing at that?”
October 5th, 2008 at 1:32 pm
WOW pat ran like a champ on that one
October 5th, 2008 at 1:32 pm
Dobbs is so good, its unbelievable.
October 5th, 2008 at 1:32 pm
alright dobbs
October 5th, 2008 at 1:33 pm
atta boy Dobbsy! let’s hope Chooch doesn’t muck this up.
October 5th, 2008 at 1:33 pm
Ruiz is good for a double
October 5th, 2008 at 1:33 pm
Fielder looks like he can’t breathe, is he ok?
October 5th, 2008 at 1:34 pm
should Dobbs steal?
October 5th, 2008 at 1:35 pm
Prince has some bacon stuck in his throat
October 5th, 2008 at 1:35 pm
A mistake by Manuel, he should’ve had Werth bunting.
October 5th, 2008 at 1:36 pm
some guys chew tobaccy some chew gum Prince chews bacon fat
October 5th, 2008 at 1:36 pm
don’t just look at it Chooch! geez!
October 5th, 2008 at 1:36 pm
tired of the announcers rooting for the brewers . . .
October 5th, 2008 at 1:37 pm
Bad situational hitting, Ruiz should have focused on just getting the sac fly.
October 5th, 2008 at 1:37 pm
ugh
October 5th, 2008 at 1:37 pm
Another missed opportunity. just terrible.
October 5th, 2008 at 1:38 pm
we need to score in more innings this game.
October 5th, 2008 at 1:38 pm
Has anyone got a stat on the Phils failures this series with RISP?
October 5th, 2008 at 1:40 pm
That commercial is a NLCS preview!
October 5th, 2008 at 1:41 pm
I hope we can stop with the ruiz clutchiness good catcher guy bs. Ya, strike 3 right down the pike with the pitcher batting next. What an awful hitter
October 5th, 2008 at 1:41 pm
yeah NJ, 3 for 116.
October 5th, 2008 at 1:41 pm
Yeah, because everyone’s been jumping on Burrell, and Utley and Werth can’t be doing much better, but they, esp. Utley, always get a pass, it seems.
October 5th, 2008 at 1:42 pm
0 for 11 I think
October 5th, 2008 at 1:42 pm
Great job by blanton. That was key with the top of our order coming up.
October 5th, 2008 at 1:42 pm
keep it up Blanton!
October 5th, 2008 at 1:42 pm
great inning for joe and the defense there. warm the bats up!
October 5th, 2008 at 1:43 pm
I know the Eagles chatter is discouraged but have only got the game on play-by-play and can anyone tell me why camball took a knee before the Skins FG?
October 5th, 2008 at 1:43 pm
real nice inning
October 5th, 2008 at 1:47 pm
I really think that Lou Marson would be a much better fit in the 8 spot this week.
October 5th, 2008 at 1:47 pm
YEAH VIC!!!
October 5th, 2008 at 1:47 pm
good drop Shane
October 5th, 2008 at 1:50 pm
For once, they better get this run in.
October 5th, 2008 at 1:52 pm

October 5th, 2008 at 1:52 pm

October 5th, 2008 at 1:54 pm
Wow that should be ball 3 to burrell.
October 5th, 2008 at 1:54 pm

October 5th, 2008 at 1:56 pm
HELL YEAH!!
October 5th, 2008 at 1:56 pm
My gf who is not watching the game but is in the room just asked “are these Brewers announcers?”
October 5th, 2008 at 1:56 pm
Knew it!
October 5th, 2008 at 1:56 pm
Oh ya, pat.
October 5th, 2008 at 1:56 pm
I feel ashamed for doubting Pat and frowing at him ending up in a pitchers count…
October 5th, 2008 at 1:56 pm
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
October 5th, 2008 at 1:57 pm
WOW, finally some big hits.
October 5th, 2008 at 1:57 pm

October 5th, 2008 at 1:57 pm

October 5th, 2008 at 1:57 pm

October 5th, 2008 at 1:57 pm

October 5th, 2008 at 1:58 pm
pat the bat!!!
Great job Werth!
October 5th, 2008 at 1:58 pm
let’s not completely count out the brew crew yet. it’s not over til it’s over.
October 5th, 2008 at 1:58 pm
Just realised the Eagles and Phillies have the same tactic when they need to come up with the win… GO LONG!
October 5th, 2008 at 1:58 pm
The announcers sound clearly depressed. They lost all emotion compared to 2 minutes ago.
October 5th, 2008 at 1:59 pm
WOOOOOO!
LET’S HOLD EM!!!
October 5th, 2008 at 1:59 pm
taking batting practice on trash suppan. love it.
October 5th, 2008 at 2:00 pm
Pat deserves to be a part of this, imo. That’s why I wanted him to play, that and , he hits the crap out of this guy!!!
October 5th, 2008 at 2:00 pm
i’m sick and tired of all you people screaming to take Pat the Bat outta the lineup. SHUT THE HELL UP. when you gonna learn. You dont take a guy out with 30 jacks and 100 some odd rbis outta ur line up in the playoffs.
ENOUGH ALREADY
let’s go phils!
October 5th, 2008 at 2:00 pm
NEPA what would you prefer these guys or Joe Morgan?
October 5th, 2008 at 2:00 pm
By all means, keep walking Ryan Howard….
October 5th, 2008 at 2:01 pm
Dave, no way do you start Lou Marson in a postseason game at this point unless you have to due to injury. His bat may look nice, but Ruiz knows this staff and calling a good game is better than what you can do with the stick in most situations.
Nice inning there fellas, now Fat Joe just needs to hold on.
October 5th, 2008 at 2:01 pm
NJ, I’ll take Vin Scully and a sideline reporter to be named later.
October 5th, 2008 at 2:02 pm
Definitely Joe Morgan, because the things he says are at least ridiculous and very humorous.
October 5th, 2008 at 2:03 pm
pinch hitting Sabathia? Really? That’s pretty desperate.
October 5th, 2008 at 2:03 pm
Phillies brought some thunder sticks of their own. (rimshot)
October 5th, 2008 at 2:03 pm
Jamie, I hear what you’re sayin. Ruiz needs to pick his game up and prove that last year wasn’t a fluke. I think come May or June of next year, We’ll have Marson in that spot.
I love Ruiz and the way he calls a game but his hitting just kills me.
October 5th, 2008 at 2:03 pm
Sit your fat ass down, CC. Enjoy your off-season and good luck on that new contract. Maybe red pinstripes next year? Please?
October 5th, 2008 at 2:03 pm
You know what sucks about Canada? Let me tell you. This game was supposed to be on ” Rogers Sportsnet” (since we don’t get TBS here). Instead, Sportsnet decided to put on such high-quality television entertainment as professional pool, and now darts. DARTS! WTF!? I’m going crazy here. Thank God for gameday audio.
October 5th, 2008 at 2:03 pm
pinch-hitting Sabathia? Nice publicity stunt. Next.
October 5th, 2008 at 2:04 pm
No access to TV here – did the Brewers bat Sabathia because he’s going to pitch the next inning, or because he’s some kind of good hitter off the bench?
October 5th, 2008 at 2:04 pm
question: If Gallardo is available to pinch today on short rest, why not start him instead of Suppan, who the Phillies bombed 3 weeks ago?
October 5th, 2008 at 2:06 pm
You can’t underestimate Ruiz’ value in the way he’s handled the pitchers this year. We all worried about this rotation, and they have done much better than most of us expected, and I think you have to give some of that credit to Ruiz.
October 5th, 2008 at 2:07 pm
great inning joe. playing a hell of a game so far. and now the brewers are trying even harder to ruin gallardo’s career! morons!
October 5th, 2008 at 2:07 pm
Dave, I think you’re right. By the end of 2009, Lou Marson will be the starting catcher. Ruiz will be a helluva backup though.
October 5th, 2008 at 2:08 pm
He does suck at the plate though.
October 5th, 2008 at 2:08 pm
I’m so sick of these announcers pulling for them.
October 5th, 2008 at 2:09 pm
jack, calm down – I’m happy as hell for Pat’s home run, but he’s gonna have to do it more than once. And he goes through hot streaks and funks, people were right to be concerned that he was going through one of his funks.
About Pat, it always seems like he waits for fans to turn on him before starting to hit again. Let’s hope this is the start of one of his hot streaks.
October 5th, 2008 at 2:10 pm
me too Clare.
October 5th, 2008 at 2:16 pm
go Blanton!
October 5th, 2008 at 2:18 pm
joe’s really proving his worth out there today. great job so far!
October 5th, 2008 at 2:20 pm
Joe looks “on” today. No doubt. He’s cruising so far – only 61 pitches and 1 hit after 4? Priceless.
October 5th, 2008 at 2:28 pm
It seems like the Phils think 5 runs is enough, I wish they’d really go for the jugular and add on 3-4 more.
October 5th, 2008 at 2:29 pm
I would hope the 5 runs is enough, but ya never know with this offense. They can go off at any moment.
October 5th, 2008 at 2:34 pm
where are the blanton haters now? like i’ve said since we picked him up, the guy is a SOLID four/five SP. the brewers aren’t hitting well, but still joe has made a huge difference on this team replacing adam eaton.
October 5th, 2008 at 2:34 pm
joe’s getting it done. let’s bury em with a few insurance runs now.
October 5th, 2008 at 2:34 pm
I have a question about yesterday’s game. I wasn’t able to hear the audio since I was watching at a sportsbar, but did they explain why they took Moyer out after only 4 innings? It’s not like he was pitching horribly. He seemed to settle down after the 1st.
October 5th, 2008 at 2:35 pm
his pitch count was up to 90 by the time they took him out. i think they realized that he was off that night, and the ump’s strike zone was not helping moyer out either.
October 5th, 2008 at 2:36 pm
Anyone know if fans are at the Bank today watching on the big screen?
October 5th, 2008 at 2:37 pm
Seriously. That strike zone was ridiculous yesterday.
October 5th, 2008 at 2:38 pm
Joe’s a tough one to guage, we gave up a good package to get him and in most of his starts he hasn’t pitched like the ’solid’ Joe Blanton expected who has made a name for eating innings which he hasn’t yet done with anything resembling consistency in Philly.
October 5th, 2008 at 2:38 pm
Pat almost stroked one there – oppo even. Maybe his stroke is back – he hasn’t been striking out that much lately. At least he’s been making contact.
October 5th, 2008 at 2:39 pm
the strike zone was working in bush’s favor, but not moyer’s. sometimes the home team gets the calls, that’s just the reality of the situation.
October 5th, 2008 at 2:41 pm
wow, just imagine what would’ve happened if the brewers actually started Gallardo today instead of Suppan. it could’ve been a different game to start.
October 5th, 2008 at 2:41 pm
Oh, you’ve gotta be kidding me.
October 5th, 2008 at 2:42 pm
nice dobbs!
October 5th, 2008 at 2:42 pm
Dobbs is a hit machine
October 5th, 2008 at 2:42 pm
Ruiz
October 5th, 2008 at 2:44 pm
I agree. the strike zone yesterday was HorseS*%t. Big inning for Joe with his spot in the order leading off next.
October 5th, 2008 at 2:46 pm
what are the rules for when a ball like Werth’s hits the roof?
October 5th, 2008 at 2:49 pm
Werth’s hit was in play.
October 5th, 2008 at 2:52 pm
“Ruiz loves to show off his great arm.” the ignorant announcer sayeth.
October 5th, 2008 at 2:52 pm
yay Blanton, 6 great innings.
October 5th, 2008 at 2:52 pm
NICE!!!
October 5th, 2008 at 2:53 pm
Gorgeous pitch there by Blanton. He’s aces today.
October 5th, 2008 at 2:53 pm
LETS GO PHILLIES!
October 5th, 2008 at 2:54 pm
Ruiz’s arm is pretty good, i dont think he throws the ball around too much
October 5th, 2008 at 2:55 pm
If Werth’s ball were to land, it would have been a base hit.
October 5th, 2008 at 2:57 pm
@T Marty – It depends on the field. In Milwaukee, this ball would have been in play had Counsell not made that catch. Some places, it’s a dead ball, other places, it’s in play.
I know in Tampa, if the ball hits the rafters it’s considered a HR, no matter where the ball falls afterwards. “Ground rule” doesn’t just refer to balls that bounce out of play for a double.
October 5th, 2008 at 2:58 pm
well that was a waste
October 5th, 2008 at 2:59 pm
zack are you saying ruiz doesn’t have a good arm? because he definitely does.
October 5th, 2008 at 3:03 pm
christopher, no, I think it was just a stupid thing for the announcer to say, like Ruiz is pleased with himself every time he makes those throws to 1st, give me a break, like Ruiz turns to the umpire and says, “Did you see that? I throw very well, no?”, like he goes home to his wife and that’s all he talks about at dinner time.
October 5th, 2008 at 3:05 pm
Okay Joe…relax…settle down…it’s only one.
October 5th, 2008 at 3:05 pm
blah, its k Blanton.
October 5th, 2008 at 3:05 pm
ok, time to sit joe down
October 5th, 2008 at 3:06 pm
holy crap was that a bomb by Fielder
October 5th, 2008 at 3:07 pm
Well he’s certainly not the Blanton Cincy almost gave up Bailey and Votto for but if he can go 6 strong against the Dodgers then we have a real fighting shot at doing some damage this year.
October 5th, 2008 at 3:10 pm
come on Madson!
October 5th, 2008 at 3:10 pm
haha i wish ruiz just talked about that all the time. goes to the mound to talk to the pitcher “hey mang, did jou see my arm back there??” “uh chooch what do you think i should throw to this guy?” “is like a freakin cannon!!”
October 5th, 2008 at 3:13 pm
what a play by Howard.
October 5th, 2008 at 3:13 pm
wow, what a play by Howard. that’s huge.
October 5th, 2008 at 3:13 pm
Beautiful stop by the first baseman! Who is he and what happened to Howard?!
October 5th, 2008 at 3:13 pm
woo, great grab
October 5th, 2008 at 3:21 pm
Manny Parra looks like an All-Star here. WTF?
October 5th, 2008 at 3:25 pm
Pat the Bat, looks like he regained his stroke.
October 5th, 2008 at 3:25 pm
PAT THE BAT AGAIN!!!!!!!! WOW
October 5th, 2008 at 3:25 pm
PAT THE BAT

October 5th, 2008 at 3:27 pm
I’m sorry for the unkind things I said to the TV last night about Pat Burrell. I was wrong, he is abso-freaking-lutely good for the team.
October 5th, 2008 at 3:27 pm
When Pat is on he has one of the prettiest swings I’ve ever seen.

Red Sox Troll, sorry…I didn’t realize you guys had already clinched the AL Pennant. Oh, and for the Dodgers in 4, well…we’ll see about that. Go Tampa Rays!
October 5th, 2008 at 4:03 pm
Blanton for the Ashburn? Or Burrell? Could make a case either way.
October 5th, 2008 at 4:05 pm
I’m gonna have to go with Burrell. We needed a big hit today and we got it from him. Also, giving Blanton a big lead probably helped him out a ton.
October 5th, 2008 at 4:05 pm
Good. Now Selig can go back to his office in New York and sob like a little bitch because his precious Brewers are done for the next decade.
October 5th, 2008 at 4:09 pm
i love watching the post game celebrations with these guys. what a fun team.
October 5th, 2008 at 5:03 pm
Just a side note on the awful commentating done by the very biased TBS crew. Turns out they were, Brian Anderson was named in 2007 as the play-by-play voice of the Milwaukee Brewers.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brian_Anderson_(broadcaster)
Joe Simpson, well He’s a Braves guy. John Smoltz, well, we all know how he just loved Philly (sarcasm).
Really, having the Milwaukee play-by-play guy do a national telecast is as objective as having John Wayne Gacy do a guest spot as “Bozo the Clown.”
October 5th, 2008 at 9:17 pm
Bring on the Dodgers!!! HUGE load off, seeing these guys take the series. I hope they relax, stop swinging for the fences all the time, and start pulling through better in scoring situations. Solid pitching all around this series, and the offense keeps appearing to be on the brink of breaking out. If it does, I like the Phils in 5 or 6.
