Odds And Ends: Myers, Stairs, LA Times, History

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Wed, October 15, 2008 11:52 AM

Some more odds and ends as you prepare for game five:

  • Todd Zolecki reports Brett Myers was in the bullpen during the ninth inning of game four, in case he needed to relieve Brad Lidge.

Lidge worked an arduous, one-out eighth. Having Myers ready was a very smart move. He would’ve been my emergency choice, as I even thought about him out there when Lidge started the ninth.

Read if you want to revisit that titanic blast.

  • Ross Newhan, a fantastic columnist for years and Hall of Famer (and father of major leaguer David Newhan), wrote a special column for the LA Times saying the reason the Dodgers are down 3-1 is because the Phils are … simply … better.

Thank you, Ross. Sure, the Phils have seen a few lucky bounces, but they’ve won because they’ve hit in clutch situations, pitched well enough and managed strategically enough.

  • Bleacher Report points out each time the Phils and Dodgers met in the NLCS, the winner lost in the World Series.

Meh. If I’m worried, I’m worried that the Rays boast a bunch of hitters who don’t seem fazed by the bright lights, and a pretty good starting rotation. And the Red Sox can still come back. That said, I’m focused on game five tonight. Don’t bother me with World Series chatter.

  1. Dennis Says:

Dodgers fans are awesome! Looks like they all jumped ship already, tickets on Stub Hub for tonight… As low as $13! Pathetic!

  2. JimC Says:

If I have to hear that I Love LA song between every inning tonight I’m gonna have to turn the radio on again

  3. Manny Says:

Holy sh*t Dennis! I just checked Stubhub tix for today and you’re absolutely right! There are plenty of $13 tickets!!! Are you kidding me???!!!

    $13??!!!!!

  4. Clare Says:

    Whaaaaaaaaat!? Mahahah, that’s sad.

  5. Gabriel Says:

top decks 9 or 11, $8… HAH what a bunch of mutts
8 bucks for playoff tix?! why not just hand em out with a magnet for the 2009 dodger schedule hahah those fans are garbage

  6. Manny Says:

Anybody wants to go to LA today for the game?

  7. Phil Says:

    http://www.palinaspresident.com/

  8. Phil Says:

Manny, I’d totally go if it wouldn’t cost like $500 to fly there.

  9. JimC Says:

Haha my boss just asked me to stay till 12 for work tonight when I’m supposed to get out at 9. What a joke I just laughed at him

  10. Phil Says:

I woulda laughed too Jim. I’m cutting class tonight for the game.

  11. Manny Says:

Will there be a DC-viewing place for tonight’s game? Cause I wanna go.

  12. Manny Says:

    Phil: best website ever

  13. MP Says:

My senior citizen co-worker bitched me out for saying I was watching the Phillies over the debate – I explained the Phillies make it this far into the postseason less often than we vote for president

  14. Jesse Says:

    WAHOOOOOO LETS GO WHOLE CAMELS!

“CONGRATULATIONS! You have been selected for the opportunity to purchase tickets to a potential 2008 World Series game scheduled to be played at Citizens Bank Park.

We are pleased to offer you an opportunity to purchase up to three tickets to a potential game of the World Series on first come, first serve basis (subject to availability).”

    I Believe.

  15. Chase Andrews Says:

Got that message too. Ordered my Game 4 tickets today, so yes, I am wrapped up in World Series chatter. Finish it tonight!

  16. Larry Says:

Can someone write an article about how the loss of Rowand was supposed to keep the Phils from making the playoffs, but Victorino and Werth provide the production and leadership that was lost with Rowand?

  17. Phil Says:

    Grats JEsse and Chase!

  18. RK Says:

anybody watching the game tonight in any of the Lansdale, PA bars?
Anybody living in the city will have a great time if they clinch tonight.

  19. Chuck Says:

Hey MP, I got crap too for putting the Phillies ahead of those clowns running for president. And I’m a political junkie that would usually NEVER miss a debate. Priorities, eveyone. Priorities. GO COLE!!!!

  20. Don M Says:

You should also just tell your senior-citizen coworker to vote for Obama.. unless of course you are rich.. $$$

I already voted for the Dems cause i’ll be rocking Acapulco on Nov 4th ya’ll

  21. Chuck Says:

Larry, Vic and Werth are so much better than Rowand and Rowand is a fine player that I was disappointed to see leave. Shane has become almost superhuman and Werth, to me, is a calm, reassuring figure that the Phillies need. I love Werth’s style of play (what an arm). Someone said about the comparison between Rowand and Victorino that Rowand would crash into the fence and want you to know that he crashed into the fence but that Victorino just crashes into the fence and makes the play. Thought that was a pretty insightful statement.

  22. Gabriel Says:

that palin website is easily one of the funniest things i’ve seen all day (i’m the kind of guy who sees funny stuff all the time)
i cant even eat i’m so stoked (well that and my girlfriend is making pork tenderloin tonight) … careful with the WS talk boys and girls, didnt’ you read the phillies.com article on the 10 teams who have come back from 3 game deficits in the past? the annoying bosox did it last year against the indians and in ‘04 against the spankees… lets win tonight and THEN let the floodgates open…

  23. Gavin Says:

Gotta win Game 5 first. I’m worried about Hamels b/c he had 2 or 3 big starts finishing off a series during the regular season and lost all of them. I think everyone’s counting their chickens before they hatch.

  24. RK Says:

Vic showed the difference the other night when he put his hand up to feel the wall to make sure he did not run into it and drop the ball. Rowand would have slammed in the wall and possibly lost the ball.

  25. RK Says:

    Gavin,
Hamels did blow some regular season games but I think he finally decided he wa a big game pitcher and will do well tonight. That being said we definitley all have to try to focus (it is tough) on only tonights game.

  26. Fran Says:

i diddnt get world series tickets. If anyone is buying them can i please purchase 2 off you if your not buying all 4?

  27. Don M Says:

Rowand plays balls-out hustle all the time.. and did it because that was the way he was taught to play the game.. very similar to Utley

Victorino covers more ground, and has a better arm… making him in my opinion, as good, if not better than Rowand..

And he was like $9,120,000 cheaper than Rowand this season too… another smart move for the Phillies UNDERRATED and UNDERAPPRECIATED front office..

Give them credit for putting this team together.. We would be better with Sabathia and Harden, yes… but would’ve given up the world for them.. and neither of them looked great in the playoffs.. so its easy to look back and say what they should or shouldn’t have done… but because we are where we are right now.. we need to give them the credit they deserve

  28. Phil Says:

I have come to realize that Hamels IS a big game pitcher, he just chokes against our division particularly the Mets.

  29. ryan Says:

that’s genius having myers as a possible second closer out there in case lidge gets worn out. definitely a great idea for the world series. maybe brett could be a 8th inning guy in the right situation.

  30. Phil Says:

True Don M…Blanton has looked better this post season than Harden and Sabathia have.

  31. Phil Says:

We don’t need an 8th inning guy. Mad Doggggggg is our 8th inning guy.

  32. Gabriel Says:

CC went what? 11 -2 with the crewers? and a loss to us in the postseason? blanton was 4 – 0 but we won like, 10 out of 14 or 15 starts and he’s pitched two decent games for us in the postseason… gillick is either really smart, or a warlock

  33. Chuck Says:

Blanton should be ahead of Moyer in the rotation.

  34. Chuck Says:

Yeah, I’m in the same situation as Fran. Any extra tix……let me know as well. Thanks.

  35. Don M Says:

Yea I’m willing to pay $1 more than whatever price Fran and Chuck offer… Like The Price is Right.

BUT seriously… obviously we’d like our chances better if we had another picther more top-rotation-ish than Blanton… but we would have sold our farm to get one of those guys..

Since we were all on board with hanging on to Carrasco and Marson, etc.. we have to be happy with how the move worked out.. leaving us our top farm pieces in the process, you can’t ask for much more

  36. maxhole Says:

anyone else hear that meyrs suffered ankle sprain? guy mentioned it on espn this morning

  37. RK Says:

Myers turned his ankle rounding second. One of the reasons we need them to win tonight and give him plenty of rest. It did not sound like a big deal.

  38. RK Says:

I am willing to pay $5 over Fran and Chuck :)

  39. RK Says:

I am willing to pay $5 over Fran and Chuck because I am big spender :)

  40. Ryan Says:

    I got World Series Tickets!

    WOOT!

I’ll (hopefully) be at Game 4 with my brother and father. Let’s close out the NLCS tonight!

  41. Phil Says:

You could only purchase 3 tickets to the World Series, and I’m sure noone would want to go alone.

  42. Phil Says:

    Where are your seats Ryan?

  43. Don M Says:

    $6

  44. Don M Says:

Not to mention any names.. but

The two teams that are currently leading their respective Championship Series’… are both allowing 3.5 runs per game to their opponents through 8 postseason games.

The AL team is averaging 6.5 runs to their opponents 3.5.

The NL team is averaging 4.375 runs to their opponents 3.5.

    yikes

  45. Eb Says:

SORRY BARACK THE ONLY CHANGE UP WE WANT IS FROM COLE HAMMELS

  46. Eb Says:

I got tickets for game 3

  47. Jamie Says:

I’d love to see Tampa clinch tomorrow night at Fenway. Way to really stick it to the Sox and their fans.

  48. Manny Says:

You are all very lucky. I’m not. Poor me.

  49. redsoxfan Says:

    won’t happen jamie

  50. redsoxfan Says:

Eb they have to get there first. if hamels loses, you have to hope that Myers or fat man can win.

  51. Don M Says:

look at the confidence displayed by redsoxfan… very impressive!!!

  52. Georgie Says:

Phil, that website was fun-”learnin’s hard” LOL!

  53. Phil Says:

haha I just heard a funny Palin joke, but it’s too offensive to post on the site. I’d probably get executed for it.

  54. Jamie Says:

Don, while I admire RSF’s faith in his team (or at least the one he’s liked since they’ve been winning and it’s been cool to like them), I do not share the same feeling about his Game 5.

  55. Jack Says:

same manny :( . I’ll pay 10 bucks greater than Don M and RK. I NEED TICKETS

  56. Phil Says:

Honestly, I think they will lose tomorrow. That’s why they are putting Kazmir out there. They know that if Dice-K shuts them down that they at least won’t be wasting a strong outing by Shields again. Then they can let Shields out duel Beckett because we all know Beckett is done.

  57. Don M Says:

Phil… you gotta post it.. just blank out curses or whatever you need to do

  58. Phil Says:

Oh, it’s not about the curses…it’s ridiculously offensive. email me if you really want to hear it. omgitsf1lpratt@gmail.com

  59. Chuck Says:

    $12.

  60. Chuck Says:

Phil, post it in some kind of code that we all can understand but that won’t be breaking the rules.

  61. Don M Says:

$20… you wanna get nuts… lets get nutsss!!

  62. Phil Says:

It’s not about curses or anything like that. It’s really offensive. I mean to the point where people would hate me for posting it.

  63. Chuck Says:

Depends on what the starting price is, Don. Then we’ll see how nuts. $25.

  64. Chuck Says:

Why, does it really offend a certain group of people.

  65. Georgie Says:

Phil, is it offensive politically, racially, or what? Cause if it’s political, who gives a shit, bring it on!

  66. Phil Says:

It’s more likely to offend a woman, and along the lines of racism, but not racism. Not sure how to classify it. The hilarity of it is political, though.

  67. MP Says:

I am going to Game 3 on my 23rd birthday. Naturally, I’m really excited!!

  68. Georgie Says:

Phil, I think I’m the only woman on here right now, and it takes alot to offend me, if it’s too bad won’t Rob or Tim just nix it? C’mon give me something funny to tell the hubby when he gets home, it’s our wedding anniversary today.

  69. Chuck Says:

Come on Phil, we’re all adults here. Besides,if we can go through all this stress with the playoffs we are strong enough to handle what is probably a pretty harmless joke.

  70. Phil Says:

Georgie, email me…Don M and Dennis would agree that it’s offensive.

  71. Chuck Says:

Happy birthday MP. Hope they win for you!!

  72. Gabriel Says:

    phil, check your email

  73. Phil Says:

    Right back at you Gabriel.

  74. Eb Says:

    So redsoxfan we meet again…

  75. Eb Says:

Shot all around for MP birthday…I could go for one, I cannot concentrate at work with the game tonight

  76. Phil Says:

So, 3 of the people that asked for the joke did not respond to the email with the answer. I’m assuming I totally offended them. See what I mean?

  77. Georgie Says:

Phil, I didn’t receive the question, and, no, I’m not offended. I would find it funnier if wasn’t the truth!

  78. Chuck Says:

    Phil,
I just e-mailed you.. It takes a lot to offend me. Send it on!!

  79. Chuck Says:

Yeah Eb, what with the game and Phil’s joke (which I’m waiting for) I’m pretty useless right now myself.

  80. Chuck Says:

Phil, that’s awesome. I’m not offended. I’m still laughing my ass off.

  81. Phil Says:

Glad you like it Chuck. You can feel free to post it on here. I don’t want anyone getting mad at me. I still feel like I’m walking on egg shells after some pots on here under the influence of hallucinates.

  82. Gabriel Says:

not that bad phil, i thought we had something a little more sinister goin on but still very funny

  83. Phil Says:

    posts*

  84. Manny Says:

Congratulations Georgie (anniversary) and MP (bday)! And Phil check your email, Im jumping on the bandwagon

  85. Chuck Says:

So its ok for them to be mad at me?

  86. Jack Says:

    1,000 Dollars.

  87. Jamie Says:

    Phil, check you email bro

  88. Ryan Says:

My tickets are standing room only. I had class in the morning and didn’t get the email till around 2:30. Does anyone know where exactly the standing room only section is?
