Offense Shames, Frustration Reigns As Phils Fall

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Thu, October 23, 2008 11:42 PM

Twenty-six.

That’s how many runners the Phillies left on base in a 4-2 loss to the Rays in game two of the World Series. The series is now tied 1-1 with the series going to Philadelphia Saturday night.

The Phillies offense was atrocious with runners in scoring position. They failed and did it in every way — strikeouts swinging, strikeouts looking, pop outs, ground outs. The whole nine yards. Everyone failed, too — Jimmy Rollins left four; Jayson Werth left two; Chase Utley left four; Ryan Howard left three; Pedro Feliz left six. Etc. Etc. Pressing, pressing, pressing. They could’ve scored so many more runs.

Instead, they scored two, thanks to an Eric Bruntlett home run, and a Werth hot shot that was called an error. The one real exception from this game (well, besides Bruntlett) was Carlos Ruiz, who smoked two doubles, walked twice and scored a run. How is it the Phils worst regular hitter is now the only guy hitting the ball?

Brett Myers pitched a quality seven innings. The first couple were shaky — Myers let through two first-inning runs, the difference in the game. Once he crawled out of the jams, he settled in and performed well. But four runs isn’t good enough right now.

Talk all you want about the horrendous umpiring — and it was horrendous — but you cannot … can not leave that many men on base. It’s bad. And it won’t win you any world championships.

  1. Tim Malcolm Says:

Something to take away from this:

The Rays had no extra-base hits in the game. Tremendous. If this Phils offense picks it up just a little, they win this series.

  2. SJ Mike Says:

Tim, that’s why I don’t get why people got on Myers. I think he did his job and kept the team in it.

The offense got a lot of hits too and just couldn’t drive them in for whatever reason.

  3. Tony G Says:

Thats a very good point. Just a lot of bad breaks, bad calls, bad luck. Too many mistakes, bottom line…

  4. Tim Malcolm Says:

I’m confident going back to Philly. I can see taking all three at home, to be honest. Just to assure you all — when I predicted this series, I gave us game one and game them game two. The Phils will win at least two at home. Bank (no pun intended) on it.

  5. mike s Says:

I disagree with you on Myers.
4 runs scored, but 3 earned runs in 7 innings, that is a quality start.

Werth error led to a run in the first inning…
3 runs scored on ground outs (one being that safety squeeze)

He kept the ball in the yard, I don’t believe he even gave up an extra base hit.

He pitched well enough to win….more than well enough to win.

to keep the Rays to 4 runs in their home field with that lineup, that is a solid outing. He isn’t Cole Hamels…but tonight he pitched well enough to win.

    So I don’t blame him one bit…

I blame Jimmy, Ryan and Pat.

when Carlos Ruiz leads off 2 different innings with a double, and scores 1 run…on an error by Werth, thats pathetic….Jimmy didn’t have one good at bat all night, looks lost, he is pressing and he isn’t doing his job.

Ryan had 2 hits tonight, but still left too many guys on base…
David Price isn’t Cy Young, and Ryan had terrible at bats against him.

Pat is lost and swinging at pitches he can’t reach.

the entire offense is in a funk…they need to wake up and hit the ball…
with Moyer on the mound in Game 3, they need to hit and score some runs….it’s as simple as that

  6. Tim Malcolm Says:

I did change my assessment of Myers. Was too hard immediately.

  7. VA Steve Says:

We only have ourselves to blame for the lack of hitting/moving the runner along. This was a major problem at times this season, and unfortunately it looks like it has made a return. But, can’t dwell on it, next game Saturday night, and this time it is in our house. Come on fans, lets help rally our Phillies and welcome the Rays to a real stadium.

One other point, Kerwin Danley called about the worst game I can remember. It was like he was watching something unrelated to what was happening right in front of him.

  8. SJ Mike Says:

Tim, I originally thought that Game 2 was a loss myself. I think we all thought a split was great.

I feel Moyer is going to be money for Game 3. I just can feel it. He has waited 20+ years of playing to get to this point, and now he’s doing it in his hometown.

  9. J-Man Says:

Cholly should move Victorino back up to the #2 spot and even though Dobbs didn’t look good tonight,i say give him the start at 3rd.

  10. MikeMc26 Says:

Carlos Ruiz showed a lot of moxy out there tonight and props to Bruntlett for being all over the pitch he jacked. Brett pitched his way out of a jam or two and was solid enough, but man the rest of the offense just looked tired.

  11. mike s Says:

positive way of looking at this…

    1. i don’t think anyone out there thought this would be a sweep either way.

    2. this is now a best of 5 series, and the Phils have home field advantage

    3. NL rules come into play for the next 3 games.

negative way of looking at this

    1. JImmy Rollins is no where to be found

    2. Moyer and Blanton have been hit hard by some of these Rays

    3. the offense is just pressing…they need to wake up, no pressure, just play boys.

The fans are going to be big, they need to come up big and get into Garza’s head Saturday night…

…and if the offense wants to join in and hit the ball, that’d be super

  12. SJ Will Says:

Once this series hits Philly, the offense will no longer stand runs, no way, not with the crowd behind them. It’ll be run central at home. I love how we have been getting on base, but I hate how we can’t pull through. Moyer will have a game, and Garza will experience noise cowbells just can’t produce, the noise of an electric Philly crowd. Go Phils. 1-1 going back home, the most we could ask for.

  13. MikeB Says:

Excellent analysis of the game, Tim. Phillies beat themselves in this game; Werth’s error, lack of run production. Out of the Ray’s 4 runs, only one was produced by a hit. Except for Upton, the Phillies kept the middle of the Ray’s order shut down. All of Tampa Bay’s 7 hits were singles. Time for some serious batting practice again at Citizen’s Bank Park on Friday.

  14. PhillyGirlinMichigan Says:

I’m out in Yosemite and tried hard to find a place to catch some of the game….well I finally did…and wasn’t too happy to see the score. I did catch Bruntlett’s homer. Go Eric! Also, I didn’t see much of Myers but what I did see looked pretty good. Too bad the offense wasn’t there for him as a couple early runs could have kept the pressure off a bit.

I don’t know if anyone mentioned it yet or not, but has a change in the line up been mentioned at all? Separating Utley & Howard, perhaps, to try to make it a bit harder on utilizing TB’s BP?

OT – I ended up sitting next to a couple big Yankee fans that kept whining that their team should’a been in it! Unbelievable.. They were actually rooting for the Rays because they had beat Boston.

  15. Phil Says:

I didn’t post the past 2 nights because I’ve had friends over. I think Myers looked great tonight, honestly. Between Werth’s error and that bad call by the home plate ump/1st base ump on that strike out, Myers woulda went 7 with 2 runs, maybe even been left in for the 8th. He got a lot of ground balls and all of his hits were bloop singles. I honestly thought he looked as good as Cole tonight, but things didn’t go his way. We’ll get em in game 3. Does anyone know what happens for game 3 if it gets rained out and you have tix?

  16. GOOSEBUMPS Says:

i agree. the hitting for the most part was horrendous.
but the spotty hitting is something we are used to.

i just CAN NOT get over the umpire calls.

i kinda see this series as a microcosm of their season

you have the beginning of the season with big hits to win the game. (game 1) and now today you have the slumps like the phils of late july.
hopefully we get to the awesome september with howard goin on a tear in game 3 or 4.

  17. Kyle Says:

    Tim,

Great job on the post. You summed up succinctly the Phils plight. I am just not as optimistic as you are about the games in Philly. I think the only way the Phils win is if they give up 3 or fewer runs. They just can’t hit, and as Kruk pointed out tonight (he tore into the Phillies, good for him) their approach was awful. No shortening up, no plan at the plate – and as you pointed out it was EVERYONE sans Ruiz.

I would like to be optimistic, but we are facing their best pitcher in Game 3, while we are throwing our worst pitcher. It’s not a favorable match-up. I will be watching and rooting (I was at Game 1 – what a moment), but I don’t have positive thoughts.

  18. Amanda Says:

i wouldnt call jamie moyer our worst pitcher, he was been bad in the playoffs but during the year he was the most consistent pitcher .. we just have to hope he bounces back. I really didn’t think we were going to take 2 from them in Tampa but i just didn’t like the way we played tonight. They reallly need to step up the hitting with men in scoring position. It was gettin so bad i wasn’t even excited when we were gettin lead off doubles. I don’t see them doing this next game at home, but I really hope we see Jamie of during the year & not Jamie of the playoffs

  19. MikeB Says:

I agree about the terrible umpiring and last night Tim Welke was inconsistent with his calling balls and strikes. Different calls were given on pitches in the same place a number of times. You would think that in the World Series there would be a high quality of umpiring.

I agree with switching Victorino and Werth in the batting order. Trouble with inserting Werth between Utley and Howard would be that Werth would be hitting cleanup but might be worth a try anyway to kind of shake things up. Agree with starting Dobbs at third instead of Feliz against Garza on Saturday night. Dobbs is not as bad defensively as one might think him to be. Feliz just cannot get it done offensively with runners on base.

  20. MikeB Says:

Moyer’s success as a picture depends on a certain degree as to whether or not the umpires will give him the calls on the corners and outer edges of the plate.
With the way the umpiring has gone so far in the series, I am really apprehensive as to how things will go for Moyer in his start. Remember his start against the Brewers?

  21. MA Phanatic Says:

not much to say that hasn’t been said already….but i guess i’ll throw some of my bullet points out there as well…

    1. I thought Myers, all things considered, pitched just as well as James “big game” Shields. I think the Phillies bailed him out of a lot of situations but swinging at terrible pitches.

    2. I think it’s safe to say that Shane needs to move back up to the #2 spot. Someone needs to be on base for the meat of the order.

    3. I haven’t heard many people talk about Burrell slumping, but he didn’t look right in games 1 or 2 either.

    4. Big props to Pedro Feliz and Carlos Ruiz. Although Feliz left a lot of men on base tonight, he did have two hard hit balls, those will eventually fall.

    5. Game 3 is, in my opinion, the biggest game of this series now. If we can steal game 3 from Garza this thing is over. With rain probably postponing game 3, what say everyone to starting Hamels on Monday in game 4, allowing Myers to pitch at home for game 5, where he pitches much better. This could give us a 3-2 edge heading to tampa, or clinch the series if we can steal game 3. Also, this allows us to throw Hamels out there on short rest in game 7 if the situation presents itself. thoughts?

    6. Oh, and we caught every bad break there was to catch tonight, between errors, strikeouts that turned into walks, HBP’s that weren’t called, and we still only lost by 2 on the road? We can take this series.

    7. Anyone else feel the Rays crowd was not that controlling? Please phillies fans, show baseball what a REAL home field advantage is this weekend!

  22. Brian G Says:

I was at the game tonight.. What an awful game. Phills fans turned out well though.. Maybe as much as 20%

  23. Ryk Says:

“I would like to be optimistic, but we are facing their best pitcher in Game 3, while we are throwing our worst pitcher.”
No way is Moyer our worst pitcher. See Eaton, Adam. Seriously, you can put a little leaguer on the mound and he wouldn’t get hit as hard as Eaton.

  24. Kyle Says:

    Ryk,

Wake up, we are talking specifically of players on the postseason roster. For these purposes, specifically about STARTING PITCHERS.

  25. Phillies Phan SC Says:

    Hi all,

Regardless of the umpires, we are playing horrible. I am so glad we won game 1, but the offense, as Larry Anderson (LA) said on the radio, is almost pathetic. All of you make good points, and I believe we can still win in 5, because TB is not up to speed either – Lucky for us. I still say the game could have been won though, had Kerwin Danley noticed Rollins was hit by the pitch. We do not know what would have happened after the third out – and we never will…

  26. Lewisauce Says:

We’ve been pointing out these offensive problems since July (some of us since May, but whatever). I fear that Howard Rollins et.al. will get home on Saturday and swing for the fences as usual.

I have confidence in Moyer (I always do). He will go six and keep us in the game. His performance will be very similar to Myers’ performance last night, which means he will do his job. Which means the hitters MUST step up. Choke up on the bat, fight off some pitches, make Garza nibble and sweat.

    No excuses.

  27. Mark Says:

The Phils appear to be in one of their “failure to score with runners on funks.” We’ve had Rays’ pitching on the hook numerous times and have come away empty. In game 1, they got lucky because Phils’ pitching was THAT GOOD. But, to win this series, they will have to capitalize on a far high percentage of scoring opportunities than they have thus far. With a bit of offensive elbow-room provided to this pitching staff, this series is winable.

  28. Craig Says:

    Frustrating with a capital F.

It like the mid season funk never went away.

  29. cwebb Says:

Now it’s time to put the hammer down.
Now they get to play real baseball (national league rules)
the way baseball should be played. let’s see how the rays do with only 8 hitters. they barely did anything with 9 hitters.

bottom line is… if the phils score, they can not and will not be beat. especially by this team.

  30. bull Says:

Things change at the Bank, we all should be happy about coming home 1-1. Granted if we could hit the ball the other way we are probably up 2-0. Their pitchers now have to bat and that gives an edge to the Phils. The 9 spot has killed us the first 2 games producing runs and turning the lineup over.
I expect good things from Moyer tonight, but we should know early if he is getting the corners he should be good to go.

  31. Dennis Says:

-Myers did his job, lets put in the fact that the first inning runs would’ve never happen if Werth hadn’t made that error.

-As much as we don’t want to admit it, that 6 day layoff hurt this team that played so well in the Dodger series. I believe the rust is off now and this offense is ready to explode in one of these next two games. Garza is very good but also very beatable.

-Moyer will step it up tomorrow night, he probably wants this more than anyone on this team. He will prove it….

-Twenty-six runners left on last night? Are you sure Tim?

  32. RiVLez Says:

I wonder if this is WS is going to have the lowest TV ratings ever?

  33. therookie300 Says:

I will take that start by Myers any night. He went out there and battled for us. Couple bloop hits, like when he sawed off Floyd, if they don’t happen it would have been a little different out there. This offense has to come alive though. the pitching is still good, just like in the regular season and the “hitting” is pissing it away. How many games did we lose this year because the offense let us down? It’s time to wake the F up and start pounding these Tampa pitchers. Thank you Hamels, Myers, and the bullpen. It’s time the offense thanks these guys too by scoring more runs.

Whatever it takes to get it done out there needs to be done.

    LETS GO PHILS!!!!!!!!!!!!

  34. RiVLez Says:

The thing you guys aren’t getting is that the Rays are struggling nearly as much as the Phillies are offensively. The Rays could’ve EASILY won the first game, they had the bases loaded like 3 times. I honestly think the Rays have a shot at taking 2 of 3 from the Phils at CBBP. They took 2 of 3 from the Red Sox at Fenway! What makes you think the Phillies are better than the Red Sox at home?!?! The Red Sox were amazing at home and terrible on the road.

  35. Dennis Says:

    RiVLez,

Who cares? I know I could care less about who is watching the game in America. It’s also going to be one of the best WS cause it’s two teams that got there the right way, without throwing $150 million to each player on their team….

  36. Dennis Says:

    RiVLez,

Go home! Obviously your team is out of it you D-Bag…
Why are you here? A little jealous are you?

  37. RiVLez Says:

Dennis you’re a moron, i’m just giving you an outside perspective on things. Did I hurt you with what I said? The Rays are really good and I don’t believe you guys give them any credit whatsoever. They play in a way tougher division, they beat the Red Sox at home. They are really good and I actually expect them to win this thing. If the Phils that’s good to, gives the NL East some respect. Next time don’t be a little kid and go right way to saying “D-Bag” you f*ckin loser.

  38. TomCheeks Says:

All struggles aside, they all know what needs to get done in Philly, and they are professionals.

Matt Garza tried using earplugs in his home stadium because it was too loud for him. He doesn’t even know what loud is yet. The fans have to do their part and get in his head and run him outta town on Saturday!

  39. A.J. Delaware Says:

Both teams have played pretty terrible for league champions. Wednesday night game really just came down to what team made the least amount of mistakes.

Last night was just horrible though. The Phils have always lived or died by the longball, and last night…they died.

  40. Dennis Says:

    RiVLez,

I’m a moron? We are giving the Rays no credit? F*ck you! No one wants your outside perspective. You try to come on and say “this is the lowest world series ever” and “the rays are going to win.” Don’t act like your not trying to start shit, you have not one good thing to say about the Phillies, who must’ve done something right since they are in the WS. You must be a Met’s fan cause you are piece of trash. I’m a loser? You’re a Mets fan! Wait a second…. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

  41. RiVLez Says:

Dennis your still a moron. Wow you are so tough, you argue online!!!! OMG please stop you are hurting me. Just STFU and stop being a little b*tch. I said I wonder if this is going to be the lowest tv rated world series and I said I think the Rays are going to win. Since when is it terrible to have your own opinion?

  42. RiVLez Says:

Dennis you are still a moron and an immature little b*tch. I didn’t say anything bad. Noone else is on here crying like you. Go get a real life instead of trying to argue online.

  43. Dennis Says:

Aren’t you arguing online? Calling me a little b*tch, that must make you feel like a bad ass. Go have your own opinion on a Mets blog, this is Phillies Nation, a blog for Phillies fans. I’ll be at CBP tomorrow though if wanna be so tough, come on down before the game and start yapping…. In the mean time, you need to get a life and stop coming on Phillies blogs and trying to start shit, how about going out a getting a job today so my tax dollars don’t go to your welfare checks anymore.

  44. Dennis Says:

And if you must come on here and give your unwanted opinion…Do it everyday, not just after a Phils loss…

  45. RiVLez Says:

I’m not going to even waste my time arguing with a whiney b*tch.

  46. Evan Says:

Meyers worst inning was the first, which seems to be consistant with the way he’s pitched all year, and even with that inning he pitched a decent and winnable game. Charlie needs to step in and get his boys hitting cause they are dead at the plate.

I give so much credit to Ruiz, who has taken the postseason as an opportunity to shine.

  47. Manny Says:

Hamels and Myers have both been outstanding in the WS. If they push Saturday’s game to Sunday because of rain, I’d go for Hamels pitching Game 4 and Myers Game 5. They can throw well, they can hit, too and they’ll have the crowd behind them. We should be able to win those… Moyer could still go for Game 3. If they get him early, put in Blanton.

Blanton/Moyer for Game 6 and if needed, Hamels for Game 7.

  48. Joel Says:

Here is to hoping that the boys can get the bats going when they come back to Philly and we get an umpire who is not blind and doesn’t appeal his own calls. I agree with the post, the Phillies did terrible last night at the plate; Howard came alive but he did so at the worst possible position…lead-off batter. Kudos to Ruiz, he did an exceptional job at the plate not only hitting well, but making the pitchers work.

    Go Phillies…Sweep ‘em at home!!!

  49. Chuck Says:

Everybody needs to freaking calm the f down. Bottomline is that we lost that game last night, we sucked at the plate in key situations and we made some costly errors. Throw in some terrible umpiring and it was a very ugly loss. Our pitching was really ok…….good enoough to win most games when we are producing. Really, if you take away Werth’s error in the first (which is really rare!) and get even just ONE hit with RISP it’s a tie game or a Phillies lead. My gut tells me that the boys are on top of all that stuff and will come out in game 3 clicking on all cylinders.

And lets’s think a minute about Garza. This guy has to wear freaking earplugs when he pitches because of the sound of the cowbells in the Trop. Are you kidding me?? What is the guy gonna do with 46,000 screaming delirious fans at CBP? My money says he’s outta there by the 3rd or 4th inning.

Let’s go boys!!!!!! Cholly…….rally the troops!!!!!!

  50. Chuck Says:

Manny, I completely agree. Hamels was Hamels and Myers was Myers. Myers didn’t have his A game or his best stuff. But he pitched pretty well….good enough to win if the run support is there. I agree…..if there is a rainout……change the rotation a bit.

  51. MP Says:

Agreeed, Chuck. Everyone needs to calm down. The boys won’t strand that many runners at home. In fact, I think Jimmy, Ryan, EVERYONE will explode at home. I think the whole offense will just really, really get hot when they hit the bank.

And for whoever said Jamie Moyer is our worst pitcher – is a bandwagon Phillies fan who has just been watching the playoffs. Even if you break down both of Moyer’s postseason starts, they wern’t that bad. Look, I think Moyer is gonna do great Saturday. I think the combination of bringing this thing home, the hopeful return of our offense, the noise at the bank, and Jamie’s expertise at throwing these young players off base will be great for us. This is the WS,I didn’t expect for us to sweep. We are the only team in the entire postseason to stay undefeated at home, and I think it’s gonna stay that way.

  52. Don M Says:

The Home plate umpire SCREWED Brett Myers on that Strikeout+Walk call for Baldelli.. FoxPitchTrack DEFINITELY shows where the catcher catches the ball, not where it crosses the plate. WHen they showed the overhead view for replays they showed balls over the outside of the plate, but on pitchtracker it was like a full ball away.. which matched exactly where the pitch was caught..

Both close plays at 1st base were correct, eventhough they went against the Phillies..

Rollins DEFNITELY got hit with that pitch, no question about it.. that was a bad call.

Myers was great last night… runs scored because of an error.. and then they had they didn’t have the infield playing in with a runner on 3rd!!… I understand trying to prevent a big inning.. but when your team has been off for a week, and then struggled to score runs in game #1, did we expect a lot of offense last night??

ANyway.. Phillies come back home.. take at least 2 of 3 here.. Lets Go Fightins!!!

  53. Joel Says:

Chuck is absolutely right, that fake field at the Trop is what caused that error for Werth…guaranteed. And my optimism is still on the Phils because there is nothing like a game at CBP. I was at Game 1 of the NLCS and my ears are still ringing!

  54. MP Says:

Yeah I don’t want to make excuses, but those two blown calls were complete game-changers in their respected innings.

  55. Don M Says:

That was Werth’s 8th assist (not many people run on him..) and I think his 1st error of the season??

He is a very good outfielder.. and a very good baserunner.. THAT was tough to see two mistakes from last night in areas where he usually excels.. we all know that he struggles against RHP.. but he hit the ball hard a few times last night.. 2 rockets to 3rd, that shot right back up the middle..

I don’t know what they should do.. Victorino looks like he’s whipping his bat again instead of swinging it.. which is where his lazy, infield pop-ups come from..

Dobbs killed me last night.. he usually makes contact, so those 2 Ks were HUGE mostly because you thought he would def come through

  56. Dennis Says:

The rust has worn off, the bats will come alive starting tomorrow night. We could’ve had both but I think before the series started everyone said they needed to get one in Tampa, well they are coming home 1-1 and the city is fired up!!!

  57. Don M Says:

it is now a Best of 5 Series… and we’re home for 3 of those games!

  58. Bill Says:

Does anyone else think the weather will be a huge factor in Philly? Obviously it will affect both teams. But mentally, I think the Phils will have a big edge in cold, windy, possibly wet conditions against a south Florida dome team.

  59. JimC Says:

If you would have told me yesterday monring that brett myers went seven, gave up four, and eric bruntlett hit a home run I would have expected us to win. We are not going to win every game and but it is sitting right there for the taking. It seemed like every inning we had a man on third with less then two outs. It was good to see howard rip one to center and I think we bust out on saturday night. Comon PHILLies

  60. Dennis Says:

I would love to believe that weather would be a factor but I just don’t see it. Phils have traditionally not played well in the cold(see April stats). And it’s not like these players grew up in Florida and have never played outdoors before, not to mention they went into Fenway last week and took 2 of 3 and it was cold there. So I wouln’t look to much into weather helping the Phils Bill. Now being at home in a hostile environment, a whole different story….

  61. Phil Says:

It was nice in Boston last week…it was in the 60’s. It will also be in the high 50’s low 60’s this week for the games.

  62. Dennis Says:

I hope it is an advantage but I just don’t see it…. Monday is going to be in the 40s at game time.

  63. Don M Says:

I just watched the Replays of Rollins HBP.. and the non-call on Baldelli on mlb.com..

I know we left too many runners on base,, etc.. but it really SUCKS when you get shafted on two calls in the World Series.. and these aren’t judgement calls like a balk..

This is a ball that clearly hit Rollins’ jersey.. and a ball that crossed the 1st-base corner of home plate.. damn.

Oh yea.. and you know how front page of all the sports sections yesterday had stories about the Balk that wasn’t called with pictures of the Rays… well today I had to go searching for stories about these two blown calls

  64. Chuck Says:

I don’t think you can compare April weather to now. Both are cold environments, yes, but the October cold in the postseason is completely different. There is too much on the line for them too really be concerned about that. And April is different because it’s at the beginning of the season and everyone is adjusting more.
