Olney: Howard Won’t Be Traded This Offseason

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Wed, October 08, 2008 01:14 PM

Buster Olney is reporting the Phillies will not trade Ryan Howard this offseason. Olney spoke with a “well-placed source.”

Hat tip to MLB Trade Rumors.

For all we know the source could be Ruben Amaro Jr.’s cleaning lady. (I’m envisioning the cleaning lady in “Family Guy”: “No, no, no. No.”) Whatever it’s worth, that could shoot down any rumors. For now.

Thats fine, keep him around for his time under team control, why not?

They need to bring in another starting pitcher (probably) and a starting right handed bat. Unless they really REALLY trust JA Happ to be a stable starter next season. Those are the main two targets they should go after in the offseason.

  2. Don M Says:

Thank you for laying off the other main culprit Geoff!! I appreciate it!

Did you get down there for any of the playoff games?? You were there for the clincher on that Saturday right?

  3. Geoff Says:

They should have a Wakefield-liek contract with Moyer. One big renewable option. If he wants to come back again, bam, exercise the option year to year. Thats actually what I think theyll do.

  4. Geoff Says:

Yeah I went to Clinching Day with Jamie Moyer on the Hill. Fulfilling the two six packs I bought. Special Day that was…walked into the stadium felt the aura, knew theyd win that game from the get go. I signed up for that postseason ticket option where they let you know if you are allowed to buy a seat, lol. Well see what happens with that. Maybe Ill get lucky and be allowed to by A seat in teh 400 section for like 800 bucks, lol. Because they ARE going to get past the Dodgers somehow.

Im going to the Flyers home opener saturday as well.

in other breaking and exciting news: bears still shit in the woods

  6. Geoff Says:

I wonder what the right handed bat is going to be to replace burrell? one year of holliday isnt worth what youll have to give up. not many great FA’s out there in the outfield that I think are worth the money…maybe some other trade? i dunno.

  7. Geoff Says:

I think matt holliday is going to be another colorado fraud when he goes elsewhere. they ALWAYS flop when they leave colorado for big money. Im not touching taht guy in free agency. let the yankees blow mad money on him.

  8. Don M Says:

Any idea who the Free Agents are NEXT year… I think Burrell walks, unless he has a HUGE postseason… he’s not worth $14 M for a .250 avg.. 33 HR.. 86 RBIs

In a full-season, Werth can give you those numbers and you could get him long-term for like $6 -8 I bet… I think they control Werth next year, and then they might have to sign him.

  9. NJ Says:

He was only this off-season going if the Phils tanked it badly this year, no-one’s going to pony up big package until he gets into Teixria terrority which’ll be next off-season. The way this game goes we have two years left and then a hell of a package to look forward to, as good as he is the package in return for a superstar before he hits FA can bring in multiple legit prospects outwieighing the loss.

  10. christopher Says:

hopefully the right handed bat that replaces pat burrell is pat burrell.

  11. Geoff Says:

Yeah I think people undervalue him actually. If he puts up those number for a few more years its gonne be very hard to let him go, but if they do trade him at that time, WOW, hell get a monster package in return to go be a DH for an AL team that wont have a farm system left after the deal is over.

  12. Geoff Says:

i dunno if i want to pay burrell to play two thirds of every game he plays. Im leaning towards wanting a more athletic outfield. That makes such a huge difference. You see how many more runs Shane Victorino takes away in Centerfield than Aaron Rowand did? And Rowand was a very good CF.

  13. NJ Says:

The problem is going to be bridgint he gap in left, I love what Golson could be but we can’t commit to him like was done with Costanzo and not be in control.

I’d be sad to see Burrell walk, he’s the guy on my jersey but there’s better bang for the buck out there. I’m intrigued by Ibanez and if the smaller market teams stay true to the youth movement Dunn might not get an extonsionate number, seems a little thin on the stop-gap trade market although wouldn’t rule out Tavarez. Wonder whether moving Howard to left and signing a 1st basement has been thrown around although Howard will never re-sign in Philly as a LFer.

  14. Andrew Says:

howard as a left fielder? wtf? you got to be kidding

  15. harry Says:

he plays bad enough defense at first, i wouldn’t want to see him in left. then again we have a guy in the minors named michael taylor who is about the size of howards who plays left and steals bases.

  16. Georgie Says:

Geoff, I had your favorite station WIP on in the car today, and I’m almost positive I heard Eskin say that your #1 milf and hockey mom, Sarah Palin, is dropping the puck at the game on Saturday! Man, you sure do get all the luck-LOL.

  17. mikemike Says:

Jason werth scares me. He is a good outfilder with great speed, But really struggles against righthanded pitching. Putting him behind howard would be risky to me. He just doesn’t hit well enough against right handed pitching to protect howard. and with ruiz and felix and the pitcher it could hurt this team especially if the other outfield position is my guess Golson and Jenkins.

  18. Don M Says:

I hope Palin slips on the ice, and breaks her hip.. But I wish the Flyers best of luck that night!!

  19. NJ Says:

The point about Howard was you stick your worst fielder in left (remember Adam Dunn was once a 1st basement) and we may have a better plan to replace Burrell’s bat long-term with a corner infielder.

(Don- Do you think Palin would actually come off better if she got down on fours and started barking? For someone who was meant to boost McCain she seems a hell of a weak link and I’m saying that as a non-American.)

  20. Don M Says:

I just think she was as ridiculous a VP choice as they could have possibly made… a LAME attempt to grab Hillary supporters.. and nobody knew or knows anything about Palin other than she’s a religious FREAK who says that we are in Iraq “fighting God’s War” and sh!t like that..

I’m a registered Republican, and I just refuse to vote that way recently because they couldn’t care less about the Middle Class in America (which im sure 99% of the people on here are..)

I always liked the fact that McCain has balls and actually speaks his mind… but he comes across as just a grumpy old man anymore (and his age and health make the fact that Palin could one become President a JOKE to me).. and McCain serving the country is GREAT (In fact, I think all Presidents should have to do so, fight for your country in order to be able to lead the country)

BUT.. the fact that McCain was a POW shouldn’t give him the automatic right to become President of the United States..

If he showed ANY concern for the Middle Class… I’d probably be a fan of his.. but I’m willing to overlook his experience over Obama because I think its time for a desperate change in our country, and I think CHANGE is more important than just experience right now..

And again.. I’m a registered Republican… regardless of who you vote for.. just go vote because people died just for you to have that right!

  21. Georgie Says:

Don, it’s refreshing to hear a registered Republican thinking with an open mind. I live in the heart of conservative religious right-wing Lancaster County, and as a life long Democrat, have endured endless berating, nasty looks, but never as bad as this year. I have been called a Marxist by a stranger in a greenhouse, my uncle calls me a socialist, my husband had his tire punctured by some redneck kids who saw his Obama sticker, it’s unbelievable.

Sarah Palin is the biggest joke either party, ANY party for that matter, has ever put out there. The thought of her being president is seriously terrifying. As a woman I always wondered who would be the first female president/vp, but never in a million years would I have believed it could be someone as unqualified and dangerous as Palin.

If I had tickets to the Flyers game Saturday I would certainly be decked out in full Obama/Biden gear!

  22. Don M Says:

She will definitely get BOOOOOOOOED big time at that game..

I just like who these conservative religious fanatics rant and rave about things like Abortion, but when they had control of things, they never even brought that issue up for a vote.

Or they go crazy about Homeland Security, and cracking down on violence… yet they refuse to look into gun control laws. Is it really neccessary for citizens to be able to purchase semi-automatic weapons, armour-piercing ammunition, etc.. (Columbine HS).. Don’t you think that a background check, including a mentail health screening should be done (maybe preventing the Virginia Tech massacre)

Police Officers in THIS city, shot and killed.. yet people still turn their heads and vote for candidates that oppose gun control laws (because the National Riffle Association funds their campaigns)

I just want people to think.. these things are all related whether you want to believe it or not.. and ANY republican candidate at this point doesn’t really care about the middle class.. its that simple..

I’ve had people actually say to me that DEMOCRATS ARE FOR THE N* words and the poor people… to which I respond that I’m much closer to being poor than I am to being Rich..

  23. Georgie Says:

See, that’s the thing I don’t understand here, I have friends who are struggling to pay bills, but refuse to vote for a N*, I sometimes literally feel like I am banging my head against the wall. How can people be so stupid and blind? In this little town it’s almost like living back in the 50’s, we have a “gentleman’s” club whose motto is “no women, no blacks, no hispanics, no Asians, no gays(I really cleaned up the language there). God, it makes me sick!

NJ, indeed the American middle class will be taking it on all fours if McCain/Palin steal this election!
