PHILLIES BEAT DODGERS, WIN NATIONAL LEAGUE
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Thu, October 16, 2008 12:04 AM
PHILLIES WIN THE PENNANT!

The Phillies advanced to their sixth World Series in franchise history with a 5-1 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Cole Hamels — the National League Championship Series most valuable player — pitched a sterling seven innings of one-run baseball. The run came off a Manny Ramirez home run. The Hall of Famer knocked out a high pitch — more power to him. But who cares!
The Phils scored early, often, and secured their victory. Jimmy Rollins — just like in game four of the NLDS — hit a leadoff home run to give the Phils a 1-0 lead. Then the boys piled it on. Ryan Howard and Pat Burrell had huge two-out hits to give the good guys a 3-0 lead. Dodger errors contributed to what became a 5-0 lead. That was more than enough for Hamels and the Phils.
Big props to Ryan Madson, who continues to be the shut-down setup man this team has desired. He defused a lite eighth-inning rally by the Dodgers, getting Ramirez to ground out in that frame. Brad Lidge secured the ninth, getting the Nomar Garciaparra pop-out to Carlos Ruiz to end the NLCS.
Go crazy, Philadelphia, go crazy. The Phillies are National League champions!

It’s a great feeling, what a team and you just know the offense has more to give. Quick thanks to all you guys behind Phillies Nation for giving us a place to vent through the bad and let the good linger that bit longer.
Go Fightin’ Phils!
October 16th, 2008 at 12:15 am
Oh, and that makes 99 wins for the year. 1 more and technically J’Rolls prediction was correct. But who really cares, we’re in the series.
October 16th, 2008 at 12:16 am
And the best part is that hopefully there wont be a Red Sok in sight. 2 teams playing for baseballs Holy Grail that I respect and admire. Just prefect. See you guys next weekend.

I can’t believe it. I really can’t. This is the first time I can remember them going to the World Series.
Tim, you’ve done a great job this year with the blog. I found it in April and all I can say is that it is awesome.
October 16th, 2008 at 12:23 am
I could not be happier for players like Jimmy and Pat. I hope everyone saw Charlie’s interview with Comcast; I could not be happier for him either. He has turned out to be a great manger.
Tim, I want to thank you and the rest of the boys for this site. It really keeps me company when I am in Greenville. Thanks for all of the updates and the stories. Many thanks.
GO PHILLIES!!!!!
October 16th, 2008 at 12:24 am

Charlie was poetic on comcast, and I know that’s a stretch. I’m so happy for him and this team. Let’s go phillies! Four more games!
October 16th, 2008 at 12:34 am
I waited 15 years for this day and I’m thrilled we did it!!!
But we got some unfinished business and I want that parade that everyone talks so highly about from 1980 (I was born in 81).
GO PHILLIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bring on the Rays. Phils win the series in 5 games to become WORLD CHAMPS!!
If we win I’m volunteering my company vehicle for a good old Phillies flippin!!

Thanks to Tim, Brian, Rob and the rest of the gang who make this work.
October 16th, 2008 at 12:39 am

October 16th, 2008 at 12:51 am
What a moment! This team is truly something else. I loved Victorino saying on ESPN that he was not that excited because they still had one more step to go. Bring on whoever you want AL!
October 16th, 2008 at 12:56 am
We love the praise and thank you guys for coming here to our site, I mean OUR site, for your phillies info. Our goal throughout the season is to keep you guys in mind in terms of everything we do – trips, clothes, post, giveaways etc.

October 16th, 2008 at 1:07 am
Oh this feels good. 80′ did when i was 9, and so on. The Phils have been a major part of my life for over 30 years. So happy. so so happy.
October 16th, 2008 at 1:08 am
Go Phils! Awesome win, I haven’t been thisd excited about a Philly team since I was nine in 1980. What a win and what a team, what a World Series victory parade Philly will have. I don’t care how much tickets cost, I am getting to a game. I am in San Diego tonight and the bar I was at included two Philly fans and a lot of Dodger fans crying in their beer. I told every one in an ear shot that Hamels is a HOF’er. Thanks guys for the awesome sitea, and a year’s worth of good memories of a great team.
October 16th, 2008 at 1:13 am

Just got back from running with about two hundred Drexel kids from 34th to city hall. What an amazing night it has been. Tim and the guys, are you getting to any games? As a strong thank you, I’d like to see if other fans are willing to donate to buy you guys tickets. Anyone just post it if you’re in. I’m honestly going to put down $100. I love you guys, and I love this site. Since the end of last year it’s been such an integral part of my phillies phandom. Thank you for everything you do.
October 16th, 2008 at 1:44 am
This, beerleaguer and we should be gms are all i bother reading anymore…great, dedicated, original and nuanced blogging here, and this seems like a great moment to join everyone in voicing my appreciation.
I can’t believe this…four more wins.
They needed to save that goosebumps capmaign for this season because i’m getting them now.
October 16th, 2008 at 1:45 am
wowowowowow i can’t believe this. holy shit, the world f’in series! and for the first time since ‘93 i get to watch the phils play in the world series on my birthday, couldn’t ask for a better present. broad street was amazing, i was out in the crowd on locust street and then rode my bike up and down broad about three times, high fiving everything in sight! what a great night, but it will be 100 times better when we win the world series!
October 16th, 2008 at 2:00 am
I’d love to hear what joe buck, tim mccarver and the other fox analysts have to say for themselves now. They always count us out and it makes this win feel so much better. This is an advertising and television nightmare for fox (tampa vs. Philly) but its a dream for us. Go phils!
October 16th, 2008 at 2:14 am
Congrats to the NATIONAL LEAGUE CHAMPIONS… THE PHILLIES!!
Damn! It feel so good to say that.
Now we have to wait a whole week (Oct. 22) for the start of the WS. That sucks. I bet the Fox network is wringing their hands over the prospect of a Tampa Bay/Philadelphia Series and concerns in their minds with the national ratings and sponsors.
October 16th, 2008 at 2:18 am
AHHHHH! WHAT AN EVENING! I am 19, 20 in a few weeks and this is the greatest sports moment in my lifetime, in ‘93 i was about 6 so it wasn’t exactly the same thing. I am so happy with this moment i hardly know what to do with myself, i’ll finish this champagne and hit the sack, go phils.
BEAT THE.RAYS.
October 16th, 2008 at 2:22 am
haha, yea mike, me too. 20 in a few weeks and living through the best sports moments in my life. Flyers lost in 97, Sixers in 01, and Eagles in 05. Now it’s the Phillies time…Let’s WIN!
October 16th, 2008 at 2:44 am
HOLY $HIT!!!! THEY DID IT!!! My dad and I followed almost every pitch this year, and holy $hit! they’re there! THE WORLD SERIES!!!! I went to game 4 in LA and it was the best baseball game i ever went to, but it’s not over!!! GO PHILLIES!!! 4 MORE WINS!!!
October 16th, 2008 at 2:53 am
I just got back from Broad St. I’m drunk as shit. This had to have been the best night of my adult life. The Phillies are going to the World Series. It was so awesome to be screaming on Broad Street with thousands of Phillies fans who were high fiving, honking, and cheering on their team. I watched videos on youtube of what was going on in 93 when they clinched, and I was saying to myself that I hope the city goes that crazy tonight when we clinch, and it exceeded all of my expectations. It was crazy, and the World Series victory will be that much crazier. I love this team. I can’t wait to go to the World Series game 3. It will be the best moment of my life. I said Cole or Lidge will win the NLCS MVP. Cole is the man. He is an ace. I hope we sign him and have him for years to come. I want him to retire in a Phillies Jersey. He’s a future HOFer. I’m done ranting. GO PHILS!!!!!!!!! PHILS IN 5!!!!!!!!! BRING ON THE F*CKING RAYS!!!!!!!!
October 16th, 2008 at 4:04 am
Sweet.
Enjoy it guys.
October 16th, 2008 at 5:21 am
Mets fan stopping by to say “congratulations!” It’s well deserved. The best team will be representing the NL in the Series. Go get ‘em!
October 16th, 2008 at 5:22 am
Go Phils!!!! This party is gonna be CRAZYYY!!!
October 16th, 2008 at 6:49 am
Wowwww, I was in 10th grade in ‘93 and still remember the excitement but this is unreal. Watching the crowd at Frankford and Cottman was unreal. I live in the Burbs and I went outside and could hear the crickets chirping, it must have been crazy to be in the city last night. What a night….4 more wins
October 16th, 2008 at 6:53 am
hey where is red sox fan?
October 16th, 2008 at 7:00 am
First of all,Ryan the stock market is already &@+%#* now that out of the way……Phils did the job in the NL in 2008 and deserve the pennant congrats.HOWEVER most likely Tampa Bay (unless the BoSox do what they did in 04) will be your next team to kill. Now not trying t be a downer, the Devil Rays are a young, hungry, scrappy team that will give you fits.Don’t count them out by any stretch.I still remember 86 fondly and long for the day my Amazins win again. So after the Phils beat the Devil Rays, back to hoping in 2009 the Mets retool and figure out how to win a ballgame and beat those stinkin, rotten Anchovies from Miami.119 more days til pitchers and catchers.
October 16th, 2008 at 7:01 am
Tim, your picture is worth a fortune. Move over Area 51, we have living proof that men are from outer space exist. Notice the ones in the picture who are actually floating in the air!
October 16th, 2008 at 7:31 am
No one I would rather celebrate with then Phillies Nation. Time 2 win the series babbbyyy
October 16th, 2008 at 7:33 am

October 16th, 2008 at 7:45 am
This is the year….it feels different from the Eagles in 2004, Sixers in 2001, Flyers in 1997, etc etc etc. We were happy to be playing for the titles in those years. But not this team – they have their eyes on the prize. THIS IS THE YEAR!! THIS IS THE YEAR!! LET’S DO IT!!!
October 16th, 2008 at 7:48 am
any idea of plans for a rally this weekend.
October 16th, 2008 at 7:55 am
tim do you know of any fighting men, our troops. who might enjoy this blog of the Phillies victory and their quest, lets send it to them. my family has “adopted a service man from each branch of the armed forces and send them all types of info and packages, it would be a great gesture to send our own phightins a blog of this win …. just to let them know that we are here for them thanks
October 16th, 2008 at 8:08 am
Spent all night spraying my 15 year old brother with champagne, then passed out on the hardwood floor. I have one hell of a headache, my back is killing me, but damn I could not be any happier. One hell of a wednesday night. LETS GO PHIGHTINS
October 16th, 2008 at 8:12 am
This is really surreal. I was 8 years old in ‘93, and my homework assignments back then were to track the Phillies progress through the playoffs. I know I couldn’t appreciate as much then as I can now, but I still get brought near tears when I think about Joe Carter. More than anything, I just don’t want this ride to end. Baseball has by far always been my favorite sport, and there is no greater satisfaction for me than to see the Philadelphia Phillies on the doorstep of a championship. I think it would be more than just right for the city’s oldest team to win it’s first championship in 25 years. Even my dad, who has obviously lived through all those tough years (and the one great one in 80) is excited again. He’s told me every season since I was very young, “You should watch the Phillies and enjoy them as entertainment, but try not to get emotionally invested because they will break your heart every time.” But last night I got a phone call saying “How cool is this? We’re playing in the World Series.” Unbelievable. All we need is 4 more…GO PHILS!
October 16th, 2008 at 8:31 am
‘80, now ‘08…it’s destiny!! GO PHILS!!!
October 16th, 2008 at 8:36 am
My head is pounding but its so worth it.
October 16th, 2008 at 8:39 am
Four more wins!!! What a ride, and it’s not over yet.
Go Phillies!!!!!
Thanks Phillies Nation.
October 16th, 2008 at 8:40 am
4 more to go!!!! Told the boss this morning don’t expect me for the day of the parade!!! This is one of the greatest feelings in the world.
How many others cried last night?
October 16th, 2008 at 8:42 am
It was rockin in Charlotte, NC last night…wait a minute. I was rockin in Charlotte last night, and I made sure everybody heard me.
I can still feel the effects of the bottle of Champagne I drank last night but I am lovin it!
October 16th, 2008 at 8:48 am
Great article from Gregg Doyel on sportsline.com. Talks about the Phil’s toughness compared to LA’s “Southern California Cool.”
“The Dodgers are front-runners, is what I’m saying.
The Phillies are sonsofbitches.
No wonder the Phillies are going to the World Series. No wonder the Dodgers aren’t. ”
http://www.sportsline.com/mlb/story/11037700
October 16th, 2008 at 8:48 am
Best blog ever..and now that I’ve moved back to Philadelphia from L.A., this is even sweeter. GO FIGHTIN’S!
October 16th, 2008 at 8:49 am
For me, last night was almost anticlimactic (that sounds funny) after Monday’s game with the Stairs shot. But what a feeling!! We’re goin to the Series!!!
October 16th, 2008 at 8:50 am
1993 – I was in 6th grade. This is great!
October 16th, 2008 at 8:53 am
RK: I’m in the burbs too and I did hear faint cheering from the bar down the road..but that was about it. Philly looked SO amazing on TV last night.
I’m sure there will be people partying throughout the weekend!
October 16th, 2008 at 9:00 am
HOORAY Phillies!
Thanks to philliesnation and mlbtv for helping me phollow the phitin’s all year long from a distance. This is truly special. My late dad took me to my first Phils game in 1964 at Connie Mack. I sat in the 400 level of the Vet with my brother for game six of 1980 on that great night. This year is truly special and I’m sharing it with my son, part of the next generation of Phils Phans. The ‘08 Phils have the heart of a champion.
FOUR MORE!!
October 16th, 2008 at 9:10 am
We all need to get a grip here. Let’s not celebrate TOO much just yet. Still work to do. Still four more wins to get. Let’s have fun with this but put it into perspective. I, for one, think that Tampa or Boston could be our toughest opponent yet. Tampa because they are just young enough to not fully understand the whole show and go out and steal this thing from us (plus….they are a VERY good team). And Boston because if they win this…..and it is a stretch at this point down 3-1……they could be riding such momentum that they are unbeatable going into the Series. And with home-field at Fenway with that kind of juice in their systems……….I hate to think about what could happen. Not trying to be negative here (I feel good about the boys), just realistic and cautious.
October 16th, 2008 at 9:12 am
I am so f*cking hungover right now, and I can honestly say that this is the best hangover of my life. I enjoy this hangover. This is the hangover of a celebration. It is all finally sinking in right now. Being on broad street last night screaming like a moron was incredible, and now that I’m lying in my bed with a pounding headache and on the verge of puking, while reading all of your responses to the passion of this team it’s just amazing. My eyes are tearing up with joy for finally seeing this team do it. It is all sinking in now. They are a team of destiny. They have such a great team of amazing talent that are just beginning to reach their prime. I can’t wait to see them dismantle the Rays in the World Series. I bet you none of those kids were even alive when Jamie Moyer started playing. I will be at game 3! 4 MORE WINS!

We may just take a personal day today… who knows.
October 16th, 2008 at 9:14 am
This season started with us down in clearwater. Although we always dreamed of this happening, it was always such a reach that we tried to suppress it as not to be dissapointed, yet again. Well here we are, on the doorstep of the World Series. I am 53 years old and have been rooting for the Fightin’s since ‘64, my first encounter with failure. (My 86 year old father inroduced me to baseball and still bleeds red pinstripes). I remember ‘80 like it was yesterday. For those of you who don’t remember it, because you are too young or were living on Pluto, you are in for a ride and a half. The pressure seems lessened in the WS compared to the NLCS. If the Phils just play they’re game, they have the talent to win it all. Enjoy this everybody, it doesn’t happen too often. GO PHILLLIES
October 16th, 2008 at 9:17 am
Oh I have a question for 2 bloggers. 1st to Mike T. Are the Phillies still not a good team? You said it so many times this season that they just aren’t a good team. Still feel that way? When I said it early on in the season that we were the best team in the NL you said no the Cubs are. And Scot is Hamels still not a big game pitcher? He let up a home run to Manny…he must really suck, right?
October 16th, 2008 at 9:25 am
It’s 6:30am here in LA. I’m hung over as shit. Best. Day. Ever. Phillies fans were everywhere and they gave tons of love on the field to the team. Seriously, there were just as many people there to celebrate with the Phils as there was after they clinched the division. Tommy Lasorda gave some cheerleader speech to the Dodgers fans after the game about them being the greatest fans in the world — only the only people left were wearing red. I sat next to Orel Hershiser at the bar in my hotel after the game. Totally random. He was having a candid conversation about his radio career with his friends. Richard Simmons was on my flight here and he helped collect all of the snack trash with the stewardesses. Needless to say, LA sucks, and I can’t wait to celebrate the next one in Philly!
(Pictures of all of this — including Orel Hershiser and Richard Simmons — coming soon)
Lets Go Phillies!
October 16th, 2008 at 9:30 am
Aaron:
You are right the celebrating will go on all weekend everywhere. I know I will be at the bar tomorrow night. I meant the official rally with the team.
4 more fellas (and Georgie), this is not over yet but this victory is sweet. I am glad I found this blog around Spring Training so I can read (and sometimes discuss) the Phils with fans as passionate as myself.
Thanks Tim
October 16th, 2008 at 9:40 am
I whipped myself in the eye with my rally towel last night and barely keep it open. Just missed my 8 AM class. Who the hell cares?!? Go phils!!!!
October 16th, 2008 at 9:49 am
PhilliesLifer, You sort of echo my point earlier……the WS has less pressure than the NLCS…..The Phillies CAN’T let down and take this for granted. I don’t think they will…..BUT…..whoever they face will be tough. As with you, this all started for us in Clearwater, too and I feel so good about this season. And you are right…..a lot of these fans are too young (I’m 50) to remember all the heartbreak and chokes (1980 aside). We should enjoy this ride….because it really doesn’t come that often.
October 16th, 2008 at 9:49 am
Rally Towel:
I was pacing around my sports room with a Yuengling in one hand and whipping my rally towel in the other. I should have taken a video of myself…..must have looked hillarious
October 16th, 2008 at 9:50 am
I whipped myself with my rally towel too Dan, and I just kept trudging down Broad street anyway.
October 16th, 2008 at 9:50 am
Also, if youve looked at Ryan Madsons face in the playoffs…the man is just possessed right now. He was throwing 97 last night. Total lockdown setup man, which is what theyve missed since Tom Gordon got injured.
Ed Wade does indeed deserve some credit for assembling the core of this team as Gillick credited him for. Gillick is really good at all these little moves that dont look like much and piss us off at first glance or on paper. However unlike when the Eagles do moves like that, these moves work out. Brad Lidge is the one blockbuster move that really paid dividends. Adam Eaton, Rod Barajas, Jenkins, and Garcia were bad moves, but look at Scott Eyre, Matt Stairs, Joe Blanton, Greg Dobbs, Jayson Werth, etc. All these guys were ho hum moves at the time but theyve really fit in and paid off. Jayson Werth has become a reliable everyday player and these other guys have filled a role nicely.
Thats the difference between Gillick and Wade. Wade did not know how to put the final touches on a team that can get to the WS and Gillick does. Gotta give them credit here.
The most credit goes to Charlie Manuel. This team was terrible for big parts of the season, and even going into the last month of the season. He basically got them focused and got them playing good baseball again for this run. Hes one of the main reasons why theyre even there. Its time for people to get off his back.
October 16th, 2008 at 9:51 am
tough break, dan. In the Series, keep your arm a bit more extended.
October 16th, 2008 at 9:54 am
Good post Geiff. I agree with all of it. And, yeah….Madson is totally strapped in.
October 16th, 2008 at 9:56 am
WHOOP! There it is! I still can’t believe this!!!
October 16th, 2008 at 9:56 am
haha how 93 of you Dennis.
October 16th, 2008 at 9:57 am
So beautiful guys!
And here’s some fun nugget of information from TJ Simers’ latest article.
All the problems that happened at Dodgers Stadium weren’t Dodgers fans, and here is his theory why.
SEVERAL DODGERS fans e-mailed complaining about the fan experience in the stadium for Game 4.
“‘I am not sure I will take my son to another Dodger game any time soon,’ wrote Ken Gowey. ‘It makes me absolutely ashamed to be a Dodger fan.’
I was afraid of this, knowing some folks born in Philly have probably moved here and become Dodgers fans over the years.
The thing is, you just can’t take the Angryville out of them, which obviously explains all the problems in Dodger Stadium.’
October 16th, 2008 at 10:02 am
I guess Californians aren’t just all laid back and stuff after all.
October 16th, 2008 at 10:02 am
I am at work right now running on no sleep….At the bar til last call celebrating, then just lied in bed with Tears in my eyes.
these Phils deserve this win and it is great to see Cole get the MVP and Cholly getting a break to go home and be with his family.
October 16th, 2008 at 10:02 am
SJ – He must be joking, just trying to get a rise out of Philly fans. No logical human could believe that nonsense.
October 16th, 2008 at 10:07 am
Tim it goes with out saying, your work and dedicaiton to this site is unbelievable.
I have tickets to Game three and five. WE NEED TO HAVE A PARTY

Tim it goes with out saying, your work and dedicaiton to this site is unbelievable.

even if you dont have a ticket and place for us all to hang out have some beers. Someone can bring a TV to watch the game from the lot.
Guys as Victorino said the journey is not over. LET GET THOSE RINGS
October 16th, 2008 at 10:23 am
Congrats Phillies!!!
October 16th, 2008 at 10:27 am
very classy SCF!!!
Also very classy that Joe Torre and Larry Bowa visited the Phils clubhouse after the game and congratulated Charlie. Too bad some of his players don’t have as much class as him (Eh-hem….I’m lookin at you Russell Martin!).
October 16th, 2008 at 10:33 am
Russell Martin is trash. What a hot headed piece of shit. He makes Carlos Zambrano look like a nice pleasant man.
October 16th, 2008 at 10:34 am
Actually JUST found this site!! Harrisburg in the house this fine morning!!!
Let’s go all the wayyy babyYYy!!!
October 16th, 2008 at 10:35 am
Loved Martin getting punched out late in the game on a borderline strike!! Perfect!@!!!
October 16th, 2008 at 10:39 am
yeah him and Jeff Kent both should have been tossed for arguing balls & strikes. Well Martin definitely should have been at least!
October 16th, 2008 at 10:40 am
Yeah, Martin’s a bum. Manny’s an angel compared to him. And he plays better too.
October 16th, 2008 at 10:43 am
Manny is simply a great player. Love him or hate him……Martin single handedly lost the series with not being able to hit behind Manny. Fortunately the Dodgers never moved Loney up the lineup!!!
Martin reminds me of D-head LoDuca!!!!
October 16th, 2008 at 10:51 am
Woo! I can’t be happier!
October 16th, 2008 at 11:01 am
My birthday is today, and I got to tell you, this is the best birthday present that I’ve got in a long time. I was 18 when they lost in ‘93, and it crushed me. I remember little from ‘83, although I do remember watching some of it. So ‘93 is the only real defeat that’s stuck with me.
The road hasn’t been, and won’t be easy, but I’ve got faith that the boys can get it done.
October 16th, 2008 at 11:06 am
This site is awesome, found it this year and have been glued since. Great writing, great links/clips, great readers, great phans! I was 2 hrs late for work today, walked in with my phillies hat on and my boss didnt even care! Enjoy the moment, but the real work remains!!!!!!
repeat after me:
THE PHILLIES ARE IN THE WORLD SERIES!!!!!!!!
October 16th, 2008 at 11:10 am
Hey…… best blog on the net…..it’s become my homepage and I can truely say I’m addicted to this site as much as I am the Phils. Keep up the good work!
BTW, I cant disagree that Hamels gets the MVP, but I’ll go ahead and say I think Carlos Ruiz is my MVP. Catches every game. I bet he blocked 8o balls in the dirt. 90 mph sliders? No one runs on him. Calls a great game. Got some hidden big hits in the series that everyone forgest about. For my money, Ruiz is the MVP. I’m glad he got to ctach the last out.
October 16th, 2008 at 11:11 am
BTW, I dont know about you guys, but I’m still functioning on adrenaline at this point. I’m still trying to convince myself that the Phils won the pennant.
October 16th, 2008 at 11:27 am
Congraulations to the phillies. They proved they were the best national league team.
October 16th, 2008 at 11:32 am
I’m not a Phillies fan but I’d just like to say that Shane Victorino has definitely impressed me this post season.
October 16th, 2008 at 12:13 pm
Oh Man, do i have celebratory headache. well worth it. GO Phils!
October 16th, 2008 at 12:35 pm
I’d like to thank those people in Mayfair at the corner of Cottman and Jackson streets who were kind enough to take the trash can ouf of my yard and dump the contents of it on top of my car. It’s always fun when us handicapped people get extra chores to do. And being on a fixed income, I did a good deed for another handicapped lady the other night who was stranded at the Pathmark with her walker and a cart full of groceries and I went in the opposite direction of my home to take the lady home … she insisted on giving me five dollars which I argued with her about. See God does work in mysterious ways, now I have the money to pay for a car wash!! big smiles … Thanks again!!
October 16th, 2008 at 12:54 pm
Good job for Phills but reality check, the Rays have better pitching, and better hitting. Phillies will be big underdogs and will have their work cut out for them. Unlikely the Phillies will win the series.
October 16th, 2008 at 1:17 pm
Ralph,
Nobody knows really how the whole series is going to stack up, and that’s the beauty of it.
Baseball is a funny sport and matchups on paper never happen the way they do on the field. Nobody knows how the series is going to go.
October 16th, 2008 at 1:25 pm
SJ Mike why answer a idiot remark like ralph. the phillies will be favorite over the rays. you can book it. The rays are young and good with no experience. Is ralph a rays fan ask him to get tickets there will be a lot.
October 16th, 2008 at 1:41 pm
By the way watch out for Ritz lube and oil on oregon ave. just went for a advertise price of 32.95 and free car wash and was rip of for fifty dollars. They put snytheic oil in without asking me and wouldn’t listen.
October 16th, 2008 at 1:59 pm
Phillies favorite? Are you paying attention, Phillies big hitters still have not arrived (thats not to say they wont). But look up the stats , pitching wins and Rays are clearly better there. The Dodger (who average 5 games over 500 last few years are just lucky to be in playoffs since their division stinks) , the brewers fired there manager with two weeks to go, yah thats solid ! The mets made the mistake of filling their bullpen with a bunk of looser who can’t even get pitchers out and laughed it up again. The American League talent level and competition has been above the national league for over a decade. i didnt say the Phillies couldnt win, but the rays clearly are favorites. Look what they are doing to the Red Sox who have two championships since de-throwning the Yankees in 2004 ALCS. You can thank the Mets for giving Kazmir to the Rays for nothing good in return ! And to win the Phillies will have to stop Longoria who is treating the post season like a home run derby.
October 16th, 2008 at 2:04 pm
I don’t think either is the favorite because the simple fact is nobody really knows how it is going to happen.
We don’t know how the Phils offense is going to respond to pitching they haven’t seen. We don’t know how a young Rays offense is going to respond to pitchers like Hamels and Moyer who thrive on young anxious hitters.
We don’t know if the layoff will allow the Phils to rest and recharge or cause them to get anxious and revert back to their old ways. We don’t know if the Rays will get overconfident from making it this far as a young team.
There are too many intangible figures here that nobody can predict.
The only thing we can say is that it’d be a really good series.
October 16th, 2008 at 2:05 pm
Haha this is awesome i can’t believe their in the World Series,i remember being on here a couple months ago when the Phils were in the horrible slump during the summer and we all said they were done.
October 16th, 2008 at 2:07 pm
A lot of good points. But experience is big. The redsox aren’t the same team we saw in june without manny. there is no protection for ortiz and there pitchers are hurt . agree we beat a bad Milk and dodgers team. But we did it easy. Bookies we make the phillies favorite.
October 16th, 2008 at 2:11 pm
Ruiz is a stud. I was criticizing Charlie for not putting Coste in (say to catch Myers) from time to time, but he made the right decision as it turned out. Just like having Feliz in the lineup last night because of all the ground balls that Cole induces. Sure, Dobbs’ bat is nice but these big series are won largely on defense (nothing should be taken away from Stairs’ shot, however).
October 16th, 2008 at 2:15 pm
I hope the Rays can get it done tonight so they have just as long as a lay off as the Phils, but Scott Kazmir hasn’t been that good this post season and Dice-K been the Sox ace this series.
October 16th, 2008 at 2:16 pm
I still think the Rays are a coin flip toss up. Bigger question mark then us, obviously.
I do have a bad feeling though about Myers vs. Longoria and company. I have a feeling he will get rocked in that game. I do hope I’m proven wrong though.
October 16th, 2008 at 2:35 pm
The Rays scare me way more than the Sox. More talent and maybe immune to all the pressure of this thing. I agree with the all the down time too. Too much of it is not good.
October 16th, 2008 at 2:39 pm
Chuck, I agree. I was watching that game Tuesday, and the Rays were looking VERY scary, playing fearlessly. I actually thought to myself, maybe it would be better if they played the Sox.
October 16th, 2008 at 2:39 pm
I am in complete emotional disarray. I’m young, but I’ve always watched the Phillies. I’ve been with this team since April, through good and bad, as most of you can relate. This year feels different. The players attitude is perfect. This is an opportunity and they know it and at the very least, we should all be grateful that we can be a part of this. Seasons like this should be cherished and we should take everything we possibly can from such a moment. My congratulations to not only the 2008 Phillies, but to the consistent (often frustrated) support of Phillies phans and PhilliesNation.
Yours Truly, Rob
PS – I totally cried when Manuel spoke.
October 16th, 2008 at 2:49 pm
Rob get ahold of yourself. it’s gonna be allright.
October 16th, 2008 at 2:52 pm
Rob, it’s all good. I was in my 20’s when they won in 1980. For those few weeks it seems like there’s nothing else that matters. You can’t concentrate at work, sleeping is fitful, stomach in knots. For some reason the 1980 team and this team are the only ones that had this effect on me, so here’s hoping that’s a positive thing.
PS-I cried too when Charlie spoke, I have come to love and respect that guy, I think he more than anyone is the reason they are going to the WS. I also cried in the car today when I heard the replay of the last out.
October 16th, 2008 at 2:58 pm
Yeah I cried when Leslie Gudel interviewed Charlie last night. He is just a wonderful man and he SO deserves this. Rob, Georgie is right about all the concentrating and sleep, etc. I’m 50 and I am really having a hard time concentrating on work right now. Of course, it doesn’t help that this site is totally addictive.
October 16th, 2008 at 3:05 pm
Chuck, I found this site a couple of months ago. I remember when I first opened the page and said outloud, “Oh my God, there’s all these people talking about the Phillies on here,” and when I saw that Tim did a blog for each game, well, needless to say I was pretty much orgasmic. Phillies Nation is definitely addictive though, it’s the first thing I check in the am, last thing before bed. Harmless addiction, thankfully.
October 16th, 2008 at 3:07 pm
This is ridiuclously addictive. I do a vast majority of my work from home doing video editing on the computer when I’m not on a shoot, so I’m here far more then I should be. My buddies and I were thinking about starting a Philly Fan Blog before I discovered here. I like having some form of an outlet to talk about the Phillies.
October 16th, 2008 at 3:14 pm
Yeah, there are far worse addictions.
October 16th, 2008 at 3:21 pm
Geiff- I know it’s you Geoff.
October 16th, 2008 at 3:38 pm
Oh no! Is Dejavu all over again! Another Philladelphia team gets a step away from a World Championship only to face a Tampa Bay team that steals it from its grasp! Go Rays, beat Boston tonight! Than win the World Series! First The Eagles, then the Flyers, and now the Phillies!?!
There is a lot of rain on your parade, and it all comes from Tampa Bay!
October 16th, 2008 at 4:03 pm
OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THE PENNANT!
I CANT BELIEVE IT!!!!! AMAZING! GO PHILS!
WORLD SERIES OR BUST!!!
October 16th, 2008 at 4:09 pm
Rays Fan, you’re more obnoxious than the Mets fan that was on earlier. At least he spoke intelligently.
October 16th, 2008 at 4:25 pm
What kind of person comes on here and talks trash after we’ve been cheering for your team from the start? I guess you guys are right, there are fans in every population who are just bad.
That being said, if we play the Rays, I’m shaving a reverse mohawk with phillies P’s on the sides for the series!
October 16th, 2008 at 4:43 pm
Devil Rays fan…..Phils are already in the Fall Classic. Now eventho your team is up 3-1 vs the BoSox,its not a virtual lock that the BoSox are going to lose.If you look back to 2004,they beat the Yankees 3 straight to win the AL Pennant. It has happened. Now am I saying the Devil Rays are a bad and flawed team? Not by any stretch. So Devil Rays fans, take it from me,Its not a guarantee that your team will win,but teams with nothing to lose come up big…..good luck tonight.
October 16th, 2008 at 5:11 pm
That prolly isn’t a real Rays fan, just some pissed off Mets fan…The Rays hardly have any fans.
October 16th, 2008 at 5:18 pm
Didn’t the Red Sox come back last year against the Indians down 3-1 in the ALCS?
Now, Tampa has been all over Boston this series and they are familiar foes who see each other often, so it does favor heavily in Tampa’s favor.
But as Philly fans, we know for sure that nothing is ever a lock until it is official.
October 16th, 2008 at 8:19 pm
The Sox are not the same without Manny. They clearly had to get rid of him but the guy is a hitting machine (as long as he doesnt refuse to play). I am actually a Yankees fan but they were eliminated so early this year (they stopped trying to build team chemistry and just started buying expensive player – that never works), I have been watching almost ever team the second half of the year. If I were the Phillies I would bat Howard in-front of Utley against the rays.As for Pat Burrell , he is the one player I would really want on the Phillies lineup, but he is 32 so giving him a long term deal would not be wise.
October 16th, 2008 at 8:38 pm
Great job guys! You have made us proud. Outstanding work by Cole and Lidge. So happy to see Rollins and Burrell make it to the big dance! This is a very exciting team to watch. On to the Series!!!!!

Congrats Phillies Fans,to bad your going to lose to the Yankees
