Phillies – Dodgers Playoff History

Posted by Brian Michael, Tue, October 14, 2008 04:46 PM

Phillies Nation welcomes contributor Ben Seal, who offers Part 2 of his historical perspective on this year’s NLCS between the Phillies and the Dodgers.

1978 NLCS (LA 3-1 over PHI)

Steve CarltonThe Phillies had a chance to redeem their ‘77 collapse just a year later, facing the Dodgers once again with a trip to the World Series on the line. There was no disastrous ending to this series, though, just an overmatched Phillies team that dug a hole too steep to climb out of.

Game 1 went to the Dodgers, 9-5, behind strong performances from a pair of infielders. Davy Lopes had a homer and a double as he went 3-5 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored, while first baseman Steve Garvey knocked in four runs with a pair of homers. That was more than enough offense for L.A., which built up a 7-1 lead and held on for the win. Game 2 was more of the same stellar pitching from Tommy John, who got the CG, allowing just 4 hits in a 4-0 victory for the Dodgers. Lopes was just a double short of the cycle, knocking in three more runs.

Brett Myers may be the most recent Phillies pitcher to impress at the plate in a postseason victory, but Steve Carlton owns that copyright. Carlton went 2-4 with 4 RBI, including a 3-run homer in the second inning. To complement his powerful bat, Carlton fired a complete game, giving up 4 runs and striking out 8 in the 9-4 win. The Phils had hope, down just 2-1 in the series, but Game 4 would bring more disappointment to the team and its fans, as a Bill Russell single off Tug McGraw in the bottom of the 10th wrapped up the series for the Dodgers.

  1. Jack Says:

Rays. Wow that’s all i have to say. WOW

  2. Phil Says:

Agreed Jack…wouldn’t you rather play the Sox right now in the WS(assuming we make it?)

  3. dan Says:

I’d rather play the Sox, but I can’t help but root for the Rays

  4. Phil Says:

Yeah, that’s how I feel too, Dan. haha

  5. NEPA Says:

IF WE MAKE IT, I’d rather play the inexperienced Rays. They’re hot right now but lets just say the Red Sox won the last 3 games and took the series – we’d be sitting here saying shit, we’ve gotta play the Sox now and they’re on fire. No matter who you play in the WS they’re going to be tough and I think there’s a much better chance of a letdown by the Rays compared to the Sox.

  6. dan Says:

Good point, NEPA. As each team stands right now, I’d rather play the Sox. But you’re right, if the Sox do win, that will mean that they went on a tear and will be on fire going in. Obviously the Rays are better right now but I think we would have a good shot at shutting them down. Moyer would be valuable against their youthful lineup. No matter what happens from here on, one thing is for sure. It’s gonna be a helluva ride!

  7. Phil Says:

You make a good argument, NEPA. I don’t wanna play either of them. I’d rather see the Angels at this point.

  8. Durbinator Says:

It doesn’t matter who we face, it is going to be tough either way. I think the Phillies are capable of beating either team, but it will be harder than the NLDS or how the NLCS has gone so far.

  9. SJ Mike Says:

Hamels’ and Moyer’s pitching styles would be great against a young lineup such as Tampa Ray.

I know it is fun to speculate, but still need to worry about winning our game tomorrow night, although it was good to be able to debate such things all day and relax.

  10. Phil Says:

Blanton’s pitching style would be nasty against the Rays too, but I think they will annihilate Myers.

  11. NEPA Says:

Agreed SJ – I hope the Phillies can wrap this up so we can discuss these things without a shadow of doubt hovering over the entire discussion.

  12. SJ Mike Says:

I’d have a feeling Myers would get rocked against a team like Tampa, then again, Myers has proved us wrong before.

  13. Bruce Says:

I agreed with SJ MIke & NEPA. Obviously, one can’t feel too comfortable in discussing Phillies’ chances against the Rays or Bosox in the World Series while they are still playing the Dodgers (in LA) as the NLCS playoffs continue tomorrow.

BTW, the AL team will have home field advantage in the World Series thanks to the July All-Star game that resulted with AL win.

  14. SJ Mike Says:

Watching PTI and Jim Rome is Burning today made me ticked also. Both shows completely shuttered and hated to even imagine the notion of a potential Phils/Rays World series, citing that it would be awful television ratings.

So I guess an exciting series of baseball isn’t good enough anymore, eh?

Let’s just concentrate on winning behind Cole tomorrow.

  15. NEPA Says:

It doesn’t really bother me when it comes from those type of guys because they always have and always will care more about the headlines behind the game rather than the game itself – so its expected they’d want a Sox/LA series. But, It slightly irritates me when former players turned media say that kind of stuff because they should have a higher appreciation for the game and should want the teams in the WS to be those who’ve earned it – they’ve been in the players’ shoes. But when it really comes down to it, I could really care less what they all think as long as it’s the Phillies vs. ________.

  16. Jack Says:

Phillies vs the Royals. Or Mariners. That’s my preference

  17. nate Says:

Bruce, here’s an interesting point… remember all that “This time it matters” stuff about the all-star game deciding home-field advantage. Even if it was the same way it used to be (the better reccord decides), both AL teams have better records than either NL team, so technically this year the all-star game “didn’t matter”.

  18. Isaiah Says:

I, personally, have never cared what either of the guys on PTI or Rome has had to say. They can really go ahead and pound sand. So let’s get a good game out of Cole tonight so I can finally sleep….for at least a couple days anyway.

  19. Manny Says:

Isn’t it funny that Lidge blew his only game this year (the All-Star game) and because of that we wouldn’t get home field advantage if we make it to the WS?

(though I don’t blame him –they had him warming up for ages)

  20. Phil Says:

I AM GOING TO GAME 3 OF THE WORLD SERIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  21. Gabriel Says:

phil i’ll be at game 5 (if need be)…
also didn’t ex-phil and current jackass billy wagner blow the save and lights out take the L?

  22. Phil Says:

Gabriel, I only had the option for game 1. I would have rather have gotten game 4 or 5. My tickets suck.

  23. Phil Says:

    I mean game 3

  24. Chuck Says:

Yeah, but Nate……the home-field DOES matter and the Phils don’t have it and they very easily could. I hope that (assuming they advance) that it’s not a bad omen that in the two previous series (NLDS, NLCS) that the Phils prevailed and had home-field and that now in the WS they won’t. I want to be positive but this kind of scares me. But they did win in Dodger Stadium on Monday and are poised to take it tonight soi maybe the home-field theory is overplayed. Go King Cole!!!!

  25. Manny Says:

Phil, how did you get your ticket?

  26. Phil Says:

From the lottery thing. They were $125 and best available was nose bleed. I should have gotten standing room only, but my one friend hates standing.

  27. Manny Says:

The lottery winners were already announced?
Oh man, looks like I lost again :(

  28. SJ Mike Says:

World Series lottery was announced already? Gosh dangit, 0 for 3!

  29. Gabriel Says:

phil – NO WS TICKETS SUCK!!!
i got mine thru my sunday plan, literally like 5 days before the NLDS… i’m a bastard – i know. for game 5 of WS i got section 306 (probably obstructed by the right foul poul but who cares… its a WS TICKET!!!)

  30. Manny Says:

Phil, you got an extra ticket I could buy from you?

  31. SJ Mike Says:

Gabriel, that is awesome! We’re all envious of you (in a friendly, supporting way!)

  32. Phil Says:

Yeah, that’s how I felt Gabriel. I’m in section 302 so total nose bleed, but I do not care. I”m sure that’s where all the action is going to be. I am so pumped. I think I will go buy my Brad Lidge jersey today.

  33. Gabriel Says:

we paid $752 for NLDS game 1, NLCS game 2/4 depending on home field, it was 2, and game 5 for WS… i paid like, $780 for my two seats for 14 sunday games in section 140 two rows off the field… i love playoffs but i hate the price jack!

  34. RK Says:

when did they announce the lottery winners?

  35. Phil Says:

No, sorry Manny. You could only buy 3 tickets, and I already have a ton of my friends getting all pissed at me for not asking them. I knew exactly which of my friends I was taking after I won.

  36. Phil Says:

I woke up at 9 and the email was sent at 8:50.

  37. Manny Says:

    This sucks. :(

  38. RK Says:

Great I will keep my eyes open, I have not received one that said I did not win so I guess thats good news.

  39. Manny Says:

Yea, RK. Hopefully, they’ll send the 2nd chance email, though I doubt that they will have any tickets left from the 1st round winners.

  40. Phil Says:

Yeah, they might be still sending them out, who knows. I signed up on like 10 email addresses, and I haven’t received an email on any of my other email addresses. I made most of the email addresses for this lottery. Oddly enough I won on my main email address.

  41. SJ Mike Says:

    I’m hoping for the 2nd chance emails….

  42. RK Says:

Yea I got a second chance email for Game 5 of NLDS but did not need it.

  43. Isaiah Says:

Too bad the Phils cant play the WS in Dodger stadium there would be plenty of open seats left.

  44. Manny Says:

    So true, Isaiah haha

    Dodgers “fans” are a joke.

  45. RK Says:

Just signed up on Rays site for WS tickets, plane tickets are around $150 round trip

  46. Gabriel Says:

phil section 302 isnt really THAT nosebleed… plus all the shnooks that have bankrolls heavier than my house scoop up the lower levels for these good games anyways.. i sat 316 for game 1 NLDS (which were great seats) but i sat section 419 for game 2 NLCS… I SAT TWO ROWS OFF THE FIELD ALL SEASON LONG!!! (damn yuppie rich bastards)…
all of those yuppies arent’ real fans anyways phil i would rather sit up higher with the true phightin phans and judging from your ‘fanhood’ i’ve observed on this site for the last 2 months i’d say you would too.

  47. Phil Says:

True Gabriel. My friend said the same thing when I told him where we’re sitting then proceeded to give me some youtube videos of fights in 302 between Mets fans and Phillies fans. I can’t f*cking wait dude. I just want to be there honestly. I don’t care where I’m sitting.

  48. Gabriel Says:

if anyone is bored at work (like me) or just at home with a freshly rolled joint, check out this vid, it’s effin hilarious…

  49. Gabriel Says:

    contains profanity

  50. Georgie Says:

hahaha-that IS funny, love the friend, he’s HOT!

  51. Bruce Says:

Nate, I just came online and read your reply. I like to make a minor correction in your statement on the past history of home field advantage in the World Series.

Prior to 2003, home-field advantage in the WS had alternated between the leagues from year to year. The American League held the home-field edge in 2002, the last year of the “alternating” approach. Because the rules in 2003 were changed which allows the outcome of the All-Star game to determine home field advantage in the WS, the National League has yet to take advantage of the current format, not having had home field advantage since 2001. Personally, I wish they would go back to “alternating” privileges each year.

  52. NEPA Says:

Hahaha, the friend “You want some of this bitch?!”

  53. LH Says:

The red striped quake is shaking LA. Will LA they be able to mount an offense? Will they take their ball and go home? Will Joe Torre say next year before the 8th inning? Will the LA crowd put on their coats, in the 61 degree weather, and go home early? Will Ryan Howard shake the bat and stand back and match Matt Stairs tit for tat. Will I get any sleep tonight? Will the neighbors be mad at me for banging pots and pans like New Years?

  54. Dodgers Autographed Helmet Owner Says:

I really liked your blog with the Dodgers mention! A World Series maybe this year?!?
