Report: Amaro To Be Named GM

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Mon, October 27, 2008 10:44 AM

According to reports, Ruben Amaro Jr. is expected to replace Pat Gillick as Phillies general manager. An announcement may be made within 24 to 48 hours after the end of the World Series.

Amaro has been assisting Gillick since he took over as GM in 2006.

Boy, what a great time for the Phils to leak this one. It’s pretty evident Phillie fans aren’t too keen on Amaro, so it makes sense to announce this as the champagne for a world championship gets placed in the locker room.

  1. Fran Says:

Lidge is the Relif man of the year

  2. Robbi P Says:

Hopefully Amaro saw how this team was put together and knows how to do keep it this way. Small moves and chemistry seemed to be the Gillick Mantra. I hope this guy learned something while being Gillick’s betch lol

  3. Phil Says:

All he has to do is continue to follow in Gillick’s footsteps and we’ll be fine.

  4. Manny Says:

Just sign everyone on this team for 3 more years!

  5. Chase Mutley Says:

You know what, too? They are right.

    No. Care. Ever.

  6. NJ (Go Joe Bombton!) Says:

It’s going to be tough for him to follow but he’s as good a choice as any and it’ll be a seamless tranistion.

The guy has some really tough decisions ahead that’s going to account for a quater of the payroll before he can even sniff around in FA.

  7. Don M Says:

They aren’t even going to consider you, Geoff… that is messed up!!!

  8. JimC Says:

The core of the team will be intact for years. Maybe a long term deal for Howard but all he really has to do is what gillick has done. Find the small guys that work in around the stars. The werths the dobbs the romeros. We have a special team and the oppurtunity to be around for a long time

  9. Don M Says:

Burrell has a big impact on their Howard plans too…. If and when Howard becomes a free agent, he’ll command $20 M per season… If they play good baseball tongith, I don’t care what they do with either of those guys.. But I want Hamels locked up for the next 5 years at least

  10. Lewisauce Says:

I have loads of thoughts, but I don’t want to muddy the joy right now.

    Go Phils!

  11. Mike Says:

Let Burrell go and Sign Manny – Charlie can keep him in line and that’ll bring us back here next year.

  12. Joel (GO PHILLIES!) Says:

Wow! Never really thought about that but can you imaging Ryan Howard and Manny Ramirez on the same team? Look out EVERYONE!

Not sure though if we can afford Manny, his agent would have to settle for less money as I cannot imagine anyone paying 25 big per season for him.

I’d like it if he came to Philly tho!

    Go Phillies!

  13. Don M Says:

I DO NOT WANT MANNY RAMIEREZ ON THIS TEAM!!!

plain and simple… the guy does not hustle… EVER… he doesn’t deserve to play in Philadelphia, in front of fans that care more about the game than he does.

  14. Jim D. Says:

    manny no
    holiday yes

  15. Grrrumpy Miner Says:

As a Mets fan,I don’t want Manny on the Phils as well as my Amazins.Sure Manny is one of the games greats for a long time to come…but remember anyone so gullible enough to sign a man for 25 mil per and a 10 cent brain gets exactly what they deserve. However,if the Phils do so choose to give up on “Pat the Bat”,I’ll be glad to have him patrolling left in CitiField.

  16. NJ (Go Joe Bombton!) Says:

What I’d really like to see from Amaron Jn is to get aggressive with the AAA team and surround the prospects with veterans with the ability to get back up to the majors whether it’s with us or someone else.

  17. Joe Pepitone Says:

Ruben Amaro Jr????? I guess Horace Clark Jr will be the new manager then.

  18. Griffin Says:

ooof, Ruben Amaro Jr.? Let’s just win the World Series and not have to think about this for awhile.

  19. mikemike Says:

Ruben Amaro yes sir MR> Montgomery, won’t pay anyone over budject, yes sir will get your lunch, yes sir will wipe you a##, will tell everyone we don’t need howard . yes yes yes yes man. hate the choice. yes sir take away press passes for conlin he is a bad man. tells the truth
