   The Phillies offered him a fair deal, he rejected, time to move on and take a stab at…. hmmmm….. boy there’s not exactly a lot of great options out there that could actually handle playing in Philly.

   30 HRs and 90RBI is quite a lot of production to let walk away for a million or two.

   that was a lowball offer, if their going to offer him a 2 year deal the money will need to be right and that’s below what market value would be. The rumor is a he’s looking for a 4 year deal but the Phils don’t want to go past 2, either way if this rumor is true it’s a clear indication the Phils aren’t serious about bringing him.

   Great shame, it’s likely he’ll sign with a team that will only net the minimum type A compensation. Do you really want Holliday for a few months with little hope of re-signing him?

   I personally like pat but its time to move on. Twelve million a year is more than fair for a guy who can’t run or play good defense. I critizied the phillies more than most, but if it true then they are right. They can get bradley for less than burrell and he is good, if charlie can control him,how many teams want to lose two first round choices to sign him. He is thirty one and has made close to 70 million in his career, how much do these guys need. I hope someday the baseball owners stop the guaranteed contracts. It is ruining the game make a mistake and if you aren’t the yankess or boston, or chicago you suffer, if you sign a player and he doen’t care to play you are dead for the life of the contract. I would like to see the player have to make team to get there money.

   Didn’t we offer him a contract like this a couple months ago and he turned it down?I think we should offer him 3 years on the contract and he’d prolly accept it.

    We have the money to keep Burrell and address our restricted FA’s if we’re conservative in the open market, remember this year were finally free of the Thome deal plus the contracts for Helms and Gordon and anything we were paying towards Abreu.

    I’d go 3 years 39 million for the guy, but nothing more. It’s a shame, these guys are always saying that “I’d really like to stay in Philly”, but when it comes down to it, they just want the extra million like everyone else. Really Pat? You’d like to go to the Yankees for an extra 2 a year, or stay here for a chance for another Parade? I just don’t get these guys.

    I wonder if there’s going to be back and forth between the Phils and Burrell this offseason, or if it’s just going to be a one and done offer type scenario.

    I will say that as much as I hate Burrell’s overall inconsistancy and his lack of speed/defense, he does seem to command a lot of respect around the club. That’s worth 2 million or so in itself, so maybe 13-14 a year isn’t totally out of the question. Although giving him that much may hamper their ability to lock up other players. Should be an interesting offseason – hope they don’t blow it, because I really do think we can go back to the series next year.

    I didn’t see it, but from where my Dad was standing during the parade, he said fans were chanting at Burrell, “2 more years, 2 more years….”. Burrell smiled, and raised 3 fingers in response.

    Maybe I am just drunk on this whole team right now, but I agree with the earlier Matt. 3 years, 39 million-ish sounds right.

    Never have really cared for Pat.So if he leaves the Phillies no biggie.I always thought Pat was more about himself than anything else.

    I have to agree with Matt here…..Pat Burrell is putting his nose up at an offer that is probably more than what he’s worth. He has been really inconsistent especially during the post season. At times he seems like the black sheep of the team, only because he puts himself in that position. He tends to isolate himself from the team at times if anyone takes notice and observes these things at all. He seems a little full of himself. Give the $$$ to Rollins, Victorino, Utley, Hamels, or get Manny on our team. Now there’s a good lookin’ dream team that knows how to play ball good and do it w/teamwork!!

    My hubby has actually met Cole Hamels personally at his Modell’s store where he works. He said Hamels is a real nice, down- to-earth kind of guy. Kinda like a “Cole the Plumber” if you may. (LOL) On the other hand, I’ve had other people that I know say that Pat Burrell seems kind of stuck up when it comes to the fans. The fans are your biggest support system, esp. the Philly [area] fans!!! So if he doesn’t like us or the money that they’re offering him, then go….you are not irreplaceable!

    If Pat rejects – so be it. I personally think the money is better spent on Cole Hamels and the others. I think Goldson (I think that is his name, he wears #40) will be good if he can get hitting. That guy is fast and young. They should work on developing him and see how he does in Spring Training. The only flaw I see on him so far is that he was swinging kind of early – but again – he is young… Just a thought. It would bring up talent and give us money to pay our Champs or as Chase says our world ******* champs; that is still funny.

    That’s a below market offer for Pat, but I think it reflects the Phillies interest. If they can get him at a discoun, great. If not, they’ll look elsewhere.

    Also, it’s funny that fans booed him for being overpaid when he was making a little over 8 million per year and now he’ll be making 12. I wish him the best though.

    After Brett Myers I am hesitant to “write someone off” but unlike Myers, Eaton fought going to the minor leagues. In addition, Eaton posted poor numbers there, so I would consider releasing him. Again, I think we have a winning formula, so we should stick with what we have, and let Burrell go if he chooses… Just my worthless opinion

    Just a few points –

    1. Golson isn’t ready, and I’m not sure he’ll ever be the type of player that can be an every day player. Although he’s young, Golson has played A LOT of baseball for the Phils organization. He strikes out a ton, but doesn’t have much power. While he’s still young enough to develop some more, I’m not expecting a lot. He looks like he’s destined to become a #4 / #5 OF in the majors. He still has pretty good value, and I wouldn’t hesitate to move him. In fact, Slaydon would be a better player for the Phils next year than Golson.

    2. Like some people have mentioned before, I think Milton Bradley could be had for cheap, and would actually be a better player than Burrell. The whole key to him would be to keep him focused, which I think he will be if he plays for a winning team.

    3. I can’t see Adam Eaton every pitching in a Phils uniform, at any level, ever again. They are speaking values when they don’t include him in any of the festivities. Hell, they even gave Andy Tracy a ride around the park yesterday. I think they’ll end up moving him in a Wes Helms “we’ll pay 80% of your salary” type move.

    If Pat really wants to play in Philly so bad, *and* if he has the capacity to be honest with himself, he should be a mensch and take the deal. He’s 32, his fielding and running are iffy, so really what it amounts to is they’re willing to pay him for his hitting and because a lot of people want him to stay.

    I like Pat and would wish him to stay, but IMO he’s already overpaid. So if he’s going to get greedy, then I think we should–however reluctantly–let him walk.

    I am a huge fan of Burrell. I’ve followed him from his early years through today! From the lowest of lows to producing the hit that would be driven in to win the World Series! I think it is only fair that he test the waters to see how much he is worth. If he remains a Phillie, I will be thrilled. Should he end up on another team, I shall simply thank him, as I have already for showing up for this city and representing the team so well. I will always be a Burrell fan. He helped get this city a championship!

    I don’t know how some people are saying that Pat is stuck up. I’ve heard so many stories of people that have said they met him at bars and he’d buy them a beer if they approached him and said you’re Pat Burrell. He has really become a Philadelphian in my opinion, but like most baseball players it is about money. The Phillies should offer him 3 years. Don’t low ball him on this.

    Milton Bradley coming on the cheap was a funny joke there Matt… He’ll be wise to re-sign with Texas and when it comes down to it his a bad make-up player who can hit but he’s not a team guy and he’s looking to cash in.

    When it comes down to it Burrell’s likely to be our best option, if he signs with a bottom 15 team we’re likely to be going to long way round to get a same for same guy for the similar terms and loosing a first round pick without one coming back in from Burrell. I really think it’s important to focus on identity in the off-season, the teams that have re-tooled after championships have seemed to really struggle for the next couple of years.

    It’ll be a miracle to Eaton who has absolutely no value to anyone past a minor league deal unless someone is really willing to take a reach but they know he’ll be free agent come roster cuts.

    If both sides are equally honest when they say they want to be back then a three year deal would probably get it done considering its the middle ground. Pat seems to be so popular in the club house that I would hate for that chemistry to be disrupted even if we could get a trade done for Holliday.

    Sound like a fair deal to me.. It is less that his previous deal, but then again he wasn’t worth what he got in his previous deal. I wouldn’t give a guy who shows up for 1/3 of a season any more than 2-3 years, especially when he has never been able to run.

    Burrell is a defensive liability, he’s consistently inconsistent, slow, and he still strikes out a lot. We can’t just give him a big deal because he was there when we won a world series, we cannot let our emotions decide what we should do here.

    Have to look at the alternatives here which is pretty much Pat, Dunn, Ibanez and Garret Anderson as we should probably rule out Manny and Giles who look to be the only unrestricted corner outfielders.

    Pat may not be the best of the bunch but Dunn will get his long-term deal somewhere and Ibanez will net a decent deal at the age of 36, Anderson wouldn’t likely fit the profile so we’re back at Burrell for somewhere around the $12-14m mark depending on years. It’s a tough call but is Werth in left and Jenkins in right what we want, if we think Golson’s our everyday centrefielder with Vic in right then I look to the Cubs and Pie and feel uneasy.

    Barring a deal I don’t see a better solution than at least seeing if an over market value 2 or fair 3 year deal could be done.

    Does anyone here think Dobbs could possibly play LF on a regular basis? I realize that it would have to be some sort of platoon. This option though is only viable if they spend the money that they save on Burrell by locking up some of their key guys (Hamels, Victorino, etc)

    Dobbs only had 9 ABs vs. LHP all year. So he’s a bench player and spot starter for Feliz at 3B. It’ll be interesting to see where the Phils go for a LF this offseason.

    Matt you were making sense until you brought up a double a twenty seven year old. Non prospect named slayden. bradley under charlie is a great replacement . He gives you defense and offense with speed. but can charlie control him is the question. if he can this guy plus a another starter like sheets or a third basemen makes us stronger.

    Matt you are not alone, Werth scares me he doesn’t hit right hand pitchers. and jenkins gives you bad arm, no speed and low offense numbers. Michael Taylor is two years away so we might need to play werth and jenkins

    Just checking in on this issue with Burrell…….IMO……. 3 yrs/35-40 mil…….he rejects that, then let him walk . We can’t get caught up in some money game with the guy. Plain and simple.

    Pat Burrell is the best, and only option here in left, yeah he is slow and can’t run, but if it wasn’t raining the on Monday night BJ Upton doesn’t score, Pat can play the field, how many errors did he have all year, I remember two, one in the regular season and one in the post season, and if Pat wasn’t hitting before the All- Star Break, when Howard was in a slump, the Phils wouldn’t be the World Series champs, we would have been looking up at the Mets, Marlins and Braves.

    Adam Dunn, is more of a defesive liabilty then Pat.

    Milton Bradely, is a bigger head case, as bigger anger problems and more egotistically then Pat.

    Manny is more immature then Pat, he beats up 64 year old Travel Secs. because he couldn’t get him any more tickets more his boys to watch his acting job for Boston.

    Greg Golson, TJ Bohn, Chris Snelling none of these three are ready for the Majors.

    Matt Holliday , the Rockies would want Carrassco, Marson, Donald, Golson, hell maybe either the whole Lehigh Valley, and Reading teams for him.

    Pat should get a fair deal, 3 yrs about 36 million from the Phillies Front Office, and they have the money to spend I noticed no one mentioned two seasons of three million plus through the gates at the Bank plus concession and plus all of the Post-Season money, they have the money to spend David Montgomery needs to get the other owners to blow the dust off of their safes.

    I see your points, but I respectfully PARTIALLY disagree on Golson (I spelled it wrong before). I do agree he is not ready. No argument there. I do believe though he has a lot of potential if he can make contact better. I think power is not needed (it only helps) for this ball club; but if he can make contact, with his speed he really can get on base. You may be right, he may never get to this point, and I am speaking IF he gets to this point.

    We agree on Milton Bradley. I have seen him play; it comes down to asking price. We also agree on Eaton.

    I also disagree about Werth. I think he is a good everyday player, but I will admit he is inconsistent. When he is hot though, he can hit lefties or righties. I think the lineup worked best with Victorino in the 2-spot. Werth just seemed to do better in the 7-hole.

    I also think they need to lock up Hamels, Victorino, Howard (I forget when his contract expires), and yes – Kendrick. I may be in the minority here as well, but I think that trades and free agency actually hurts teams. I am all for locking players into teams – as it builds growth. Look at the 1980 team – they started building the core in 1972; and acquired as needed. Just my opinion… That will never happen.

    I am not close-minded on this, I can be convinced differently if I am missing a point.

    Point of Information for everyone, I just did some math not inculding what Matt Stairs will make next season, and what they add with Castro in Toronto now.

    With the Thome money freed up, Helms money freed and subtracting Gordon and Tagachi and Kris Benson’s money. I figured roughly around 15,725,000 dollars free, off the books for next season.

    You make great points. Maybe Werth just needs a season of being the starter under his belt. Let’s see what improvements he can make in the offseason.

    It sounds great to bring back the team completely as is, but the reality is that it is just not possible if we intend on keeping this core (Utley, Howard, Hamels, Lidge, Madsen, Rollins, Victorino, Romero, Myers, and even Kendrick and Happ) together for a substantial length of time.

    Burrell’s numbers won’t be a breeze to replace, but he is essentially a 7-inning feast or famine player who, if he’s not on a tear, can actually be a liability at the plate for long stretches. My opinion is that he’s had his time here and now it’s time to move forward. The $11-13 million it would cost to keep him can be spent much more wisely.

    I agree with Phillies Fan SC – keep building from within. Take a lesson from the ’90’s Yankees – they won with a homegrown core, then spent crazy money on big players and haven’t won a thing since.

    Matt – that is good; I didn’t even think about that part – that being his first season as a starter. It could be some “adjustments”. He was streaky like Burrell – actually in retrospect the whole team was streaky.

    Do you think Junior will re-sign Jamie Moyer though? All I hear is rumor…

    I hate doing things the Yankees do, LOL but I am all about using home grown talent. The Rays did it and it worked, the Yanks did it and it worked. The Mets spent all this money on people and you see where it got them – as did the Yankees in the 2000s. So I am all for building the team from within.

    Heck, even if these guys move on, start building for a WS Championship in 2012-2013 so we have a contingency plan, like the Red Sox in 2004 and 2007.

    If we can’t get a good young OF then look at the minor league prospects and start grooming. Is Nick Markakis locked up with Orioles long term? Down here in Richmond, Va we get a lot of Orioles games and Markakis is a top notch every day player. Doesn’t cry about being hurt like a JD Drew. I also think Atlanta’s Francouer has a lot of potential but he’s a hometown Atlanta boy.
    I’d rather see the Phils not go for an older guy who may not have much left. We might as well stay with Burrell. Make Burrell a fair offer and see how it plays out.

    Someone else we should keep an eye on is Moyer. This season/post season has definitely and obviously proved to be a milestone in his career, but does that also mean he might spontaneously decide to leave out on top sometime in the near future? Or will he stick around for a little while, disregarding that he’s getting up in his age for this sport?

    Miss P. Moyer is sticking around. He said he wants to pitch till he’s 50. He said he wants to win another World Series with this team. He will be back and will continue to pitch until he doesn’t think his body can take it anymore.

    You have to remember while Burrell was streaky his RBI totals would have been much better. When he carried the team in the beginning of the season, Rollins was hurt and Howard was in a major slump while Pat batted behind him. The Phils should offer him a fair deal even if it means giving him an extra year. Some people say he stays to himself but every game I seen he was standing near the railing cheering his team on and he was the first to congratulate a team mate when they returned to the dugout.
    This talk about Manny and Bradley, please. They would blow up any team they are on, we won because of a team concept. Manny is all about himself and there’s a reason Bradley has been with about 10 teams! Bring back Pat!!
