Report: Game Five To Resume Wednesday
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Tue, October 28, 2008 12:54 PM
UPDATE (1:20 p.m.): Major League Baseball reports the game will start at the bottom of the sixth inning at 8:37 p.m. Wednesday. This factors in the Barack Obama campaign commercial originally scheduled for Wednesday.
Games six and seven could take place Thursday and Friday nights, if necessary.
***
According to sources close to the situation, tonight’s rescheduled continuation of game five of the World Series has been canceled due to heavy storms, including snow, in the Philadelphia region.
A 2 p.m. press conference will be held with a new schedule.
Chances are they’ll play the rest of game five Wednesday.
More when it comes, including official word.

October 28th, 2008 at 12:59 pm
At least we can all get some sleep tonight for a change. And no, that doesn’t mean I’m okay with any of this.
October 28th, 2008 at 1:03 pm
What’s not getting talked about is that already MLB had agreed to a delayed start to game 6 to make room for an extended political commercial. That probably means that the start time (for the bottom of the 6th of game 5 – I need a scorecard!) will probably be something like 9:30.
October 28th, 2008 at 1:04 pm
Why don’t we just have a tie game, co champions! worked in the All Star game. Jesus! Well i guess this is the old addage if the Phillies are in the World Series it must be snowing. lol How am I going to sleep waiting for another day
October 28th, 2008 at 1:10 pm
This is insane.
October 28th, 2008 at 1:12 pm
It’s official now. I’m happy they made this decision. No word though on Games 6 and 7.
October 28th, 2008 at 1:16 pm
It’s about time they made a decent call. Here is Bucks it is snowing like crazy – finally stopped after snowing pretty much all day. I think they should shoot for Thursday when it’s supposed to be sunny with no chance of showers.
October 28th, 2008 at 1:17 pm
The conclusion of Game 5 of the World Series has been postponed until
Wednesday night, Major League Baseball announced Tuesday.
The game will resume with the teams tied 2-2, and the Phillies coming to
bat in the bottom of the 6th.
Game 6, if necessary, would be played on Thursday in Tampa Bay, and Game 7
would be played Friday. There will be no off day for travel.
October 28th, 2008 at 1:32 pm
@Jeffrey
I’ll be out cold by 8:30 tonight. I’m dead.
October 28th, 2008 at 1:36 pm
Well the good news about this is if the series end up going 7 games,Cole could pitch game 7 on 3 days rest, but lets not think about that just end the series here in Philly.
October 28th, 2008 at 1:36 pm
Sleep tonight………………..YESSSSSS!!!!!
October 28th, 2008 at 1:41 pm
this whole situation is lame. This is causing arguments between co-workers that don’t need to be started. It is also causing me to get mad at people for no reason.
Why do we let sports and a-holes like Bud Selig and Joe Buck rule our lives?
October 28th, 2008 at 1:44 pm
Sleep does sound good. I was up for over 40 hours straight yesterday. After sundays game I had to go work overnight. Got done at 8 went to school til two and then work till 8. Was hyped up on 5 hour energys and heinekens. Could barely get up this morning but I’m excited for this game. Going to be a real buzz kill with only 3 innings but if we win the town will go crazyy
October 28th, 2008 at 1:45 pm
Don, where did you get that Game 6 and 7 would be Thurs and Friday?
According to MLB.com:
Games 6 and 7, if necessary, would take place in the domed confines of Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, though no determination has been made on the scheduling of those contests. They were originally to be played Wednesday and Thursday, respectively.
October 28th, 2008 at 1:51 pm
I’m surprised Bud Selig hasn’t proposed moving the game to be finished in Milwaukee (sarcasim).
October 28th, 2008 at 1:51 pm
I just heard on the radio that due to the tampa games now being pushed they may actually put in a travel day if games 6 and 7 are necessary. That way the phils will be able to re-schedule everything. Assuming game 5 is tomorrow, that would make the travel day Thursday and then the next two on Friday and Saturday.
October 28th, 2008 at 2:01 pm
If MLB keep the travel day as Thursday and the games in Tampa are on Friday and Saturday, then we can pitch Hamels on regular rest in game 7 on Saturday. Or, we could just score 2 runs tomorrow night and have our bullpen pitch 3 shutout innings, that would be a lot easier for all of us.
October 28th, 2008 at 2:05 pm
Please do not have the game on Hallowee, family commitments will not allow me to watch!!! Or i will be single again
The phils should look at it like the first inning of game 5.5 they have scored in every first inning except the one they lost.
October 28th, 2008 at 2:07 pm
Yea, Ben that makes a lot of sense. If they’re gonna reschedule, reshedule it right.
Lets see what they say about Games 6 and 7.
October 28th, 2008 at 2:11 pm
I also do not see where people are getting 6 and 7 to be played on Thursday and Friday. Any links or truth to that rumor?
October 28th, 2008 at 2:12 pm
Any idea of if Charlie will have a press conference? I want to hear what he has to say since he hasn’t spoken to the media in awhile.
October 28th, 2008 at 2:16 pm
Everybody think games 6 and 7 will be played on Thursday and Friday because MLB said that if game 3 was canceled all the games would be played on consecutive days and their would be no off day,so i’m sure they plan on doing the same thing for this.
October 28th, 2008 at 2:20 pm
They are just delaying the inevitable. The Phillies are going to win at home. At least the game will be done early so it gives you more time to celebrate that night!
October 28th, 2008 at 2:21 pm
worst case…if they lose game 5, and lose game 6…
this is what Cole had to say about pitching game 7, either on friday on short rest, or saturday on regular.
“If the Phillies want me to pitch, I’d tell them I’m more than happy to step in,” Hamels said.
October 28th, 2008 at 2:22 pm
I’m surprised Bud Selig hasn’t proposed moving the game to be finished in Milwaukee (sarcasim).
I would make a Phillies Nation banner and go and scream loud enough for the entire nation lol.
October 28th, 2008 at 2:22 pm
Seriously, has any player — Rollins, Werth, Burrell, Howard, etc…/Charlie talked? I am interested to see what they have to say since they didn’t speak last night.
October 28th, 2008 at 2:22 pm
j-man is right. but, that did not consist of switching the day of the games in tampa. this is sort of a different scenario, and i can surely see them adding that extra day for travel arrangements for the new game times.
October 28th, 2008 at 2:24 pm
J-Man, but this is different. With Game 3 they said that because they wanted to keep the games in Tampa Bay on schedule. Now that the remainder of games in Tropicana Field WILL HAVE to be rescheduled no matter what, inserting an off day for travel doesn’t seem like a problem at all. If anything, it gives everyone a bit more time to prepare logistically.
October 28th, 2008 at 2:29 pm
good point Manny, the schedule must already be changed, so why not add a travel day in there and play Games 6 and 7 on Friday and Saturday?
October 28th, 2008 at 2:38 pm
Great point to keep in mind: The last play yesterday was Longoria hitting that fly ball to Victorino. That means that we won’t see the core of the Rays lineup early in tomorrow’s game. But the Phillies will probably get Rollins, Utley, Howard, Werth to go twice each.
October 28th, 2008 at 2:40 pm
Suddenly, I’m very optimistic…!!! Go Phils!!
October 28th, 2008 at 2:41 pm
Hi!
I’m Kristin, a University of Pennsylvania psychology student and a Phillies fan! I’m doing an honors thesis project on clutch ability and psychological characteristics of baseball players and the Phillies are one of the teams that I am looking at. It would be great if anyone on this blog could participate in my survey and add to my results! Also, if you would like, when I complete my project I can let you know the results. Here is some background information about my project:
What is “clutch”? What players are considered “clutch” performers? What players are “gritty” or have natural talent? Are these players also “clutch”? These frequently cited terms in the game of baseball have never been objectively studied, but I am trying to change that. I have created a survey asking about some Major League players’ characteristics and it would be great if some of you, being huge baseball fans, could fill it out! It should only take a maximum of 15 minutes. Also, I would love to hear any comments that you have about my survey! Thanks so much for all your help!
Here is the website for my survey: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=VUWValhJzb65tk1lZoMMEQ_3d_3d

I posted this elsewhere, but with the people talking like the stadium won’t be full, if for any reason there is someone on here who has a ticket that they won’t be able to use, I will drive up from DC and pick it up from you to go to the game. email is ian.handerhan@gmail.com, I think there are plenty of people who would be able to use a ticket…don’t let it go to waste.
October 28th, 2008 at 2:46 pm
Cholly and the boys should just keep their mouths shut until this is over. No need to make an ass of oneself (like Maddon and Pena last night) til it over.
October 28th, 2008 at 2:55 pm
Weather should be beau-T-ful for the conclusion of Game 5. 30 degrees with a wind gusts up to 25 mph. I’m glad they’re starting at 8:37. I’d hate it for Fox to miss out on a few ratings points.
Seriously, why cant they start The Game at 7pm. I dont think thats asking much considering how damn cold its going to be.
October 28th, 2008 at 2:59 pm
Honestly, this whole thing worls out great for the Phils even if they somehow lose games 5 and 6. Hamels only threw 75 pitches last night, so if it comes down to a 7th game, he might be able to go on at least 3 days rest, with Blanton who could come in if needed, but I still think it ends whenever they pick this game up because the Phils have shown that they are that much better than the Rays.
October 28th, 2008 at 2:59 pm
Talk about raining on the parade… Weather should be better for Wends, had a feeling they weren’t gonna play tonight. Can’t control the weather. Should have either never started the game, or delayed it after the 5th.
GO PHILS!
October 28th, 2008 at 3:00 pm
as said by two tons of irony…. i will buy a ticket from someone if any one happens to have one. i will pay good money for it too. ebubeck@gmail.com
October 28th, 2008 at 3:09 pm
anyone know where i can find the let philly rock verison of kevin rudolfs new song? its all over Q102 but i cant find it anywhere on the net
October 28th, 2008 at 3:21 pm
to go along with the theme of this blog if anyone is willing or able to give tickets I will gladly pay 200-??? for em philphan89@optonline.net if you got em I will go!
October 28th, 2008 at 3:35 pm
Charlie just had a conf call. It was streaming live on MLB.com a few minutes ago. Joe Maddon is on now I believe.
For everyone speculating about travel days and Game 6 and 7 — STOP. The only people traveling will be Tampa. We’ve waited 28 years, I guess one more day doesn’t hurt haha
October 28th, 2008 at 3:44 pm
philly seems way too gloom and doom today. we need to realize that we are about to win the world freaking series!!!!!!!! i know this is really really really strange and all, but come on. let’s get pumped up. this ain’t chicago with their feeling of imminent doom on the horizon, we are about to take this thing. get pumped phillies fans! tomorrow could be the greatest day of your entire lives!
October 28th, 2008 at 3:55 pm
If anyone who has tickets can’t use them, I would love to have two. My ten year old son and I would scream for the Phillies for the entire 3 innings left! We will be a non-stop Phillies fanatic speaker/blaster. I would also happily mail you back your ticket stubs so you can keep it as a souvenir.
Just respond here and I”ll get in touch with you!
October 28th, 2008 at 4:03 pm
to get back to my point… i am desperate to see this game tomorrow. i am willing to pay whatever it takes to someone who cannot make the game. i would like multiple, but one will do. if you have any to spare, feel free to call or text message me. 570-527-9127. i am from pottsville(home of yurengling). i would be willing to drive wherever i would have to go to pick them up
October 28th, 2008 at 4:07 pm
erik, if you are willing to pay “whatever it takes,” just go to stubhub..there are a few going for $600. I still think that is way too much for a 3.5 inning game.
October 28th, 2008 at 4:10 pm
Kristin, good luck with the survey, that was pretty cool.
October 28th, 2008 at 4:36 pm
I agree, Kristin, good luck. Everyone should take the survey, it took me less than 3 minutes.
October 28th, 2008 at 4:43 pm
Done, Kristin.
October 28th, 2008 at 5:16 pm
Chris B, honestly Q102 sucks and they probably made it themselves. Best vet is to record it off the radio. If not call over there and ask for Richie Rich. He is the nicest guy at Q102 and will do anything for a listener especially get them a song. Richie Rich is all about the male demographics on Q102 too. He loves the guys lol
October 28th, 2008 at 5:33 pm
I know this is totally out of the question in most respects, but Wednesday would be Hamels’ scheduled bullpen session day. What do you think?
October 28th, 2008 at 5:36 pm
“If the Phillies want me to pitch, I’d tell them I’m more than happy to step in,” Hamels said.
October 28th, 2008 at 5:57 pm
Game 5.5 of the World Series……
Why not start Myers tomorrow night? In the worst case scenario there’s only 2 games left and if the do indeed have a travel day then Hamels can pitch Game 7 if necessary. So we could throw Moyer or Blanton at them for Game 6.
Doesnt this make more sense than starting tomorrow night with the bullpen when its really going to feel like the start of another game?
October 28th, 2008 at 6:20 pm
Honestly, I’m against starting Myers, especially since a good majority of the runs he gives up are in the earlier innings.
Everyone is absolutely right that it was the bullpen that got us here. The bullpen should win the game and you play it like a bullpen game.
And yes, we get 4 at bats, Tampa gets 3.
Yes, I’ve had my incredible doubts about this whole ordeal and I have calmed down dramatically, but it seems the concensus amongst the national media is that the Phils will win this.
October 28th, 2008 at 6:35 pm
So I went crazy and paid big bucks for a ticket to the last 3.5 innnings of game 5….I just couldn’t pass up the opportunity to be at a possible clincher the second time it came around….for those who are looking for a ticket stub hub has quite afew available….
October 28th, 2008 at 6:36 pm
Myers does give up a lot of early inning runs, but I think there is a mental aspect to this that we may be missing which is why I suggested starting Myers. Its gonna feel like a brand new ballgame out there and I worry about Romero or any other reliever starting the game without sitting in the bullpen for 5 or 6 innings.
But if Chollie insists on going with the bullpen, I hope he starts with Madson.
October 28th, 2008 at 8:02 pm
Just let the whole bullpen warm up before the game starts. It’s a bigger problem for Tampa because their bullpen throws the first pitch.
October 28th, 2008 at 8:57 pm
My friends in Philadelphia…….. I told the father in the sky to make it rain and thats just what he did……… Now forget about Cole Hamels……. This is the REAL CHANGE you have all been waiting for.
October 29th, 2008 at 1:30 am
Manny, I hope we won’t need games 6 and 7, but thank you!
All,
Let’s feel good about game 5.5 as you call it. Charlie said he feels good about it and I am OK with this. I am not thrilled about the whole thing, but honesty, if you think we were hosed, Tampa got the worse end of it. Think about this – WE lead off. WE have 12 outs if needed. WE end it if they score. I am feeling good. I may eat these words, but EVEN if we lose this, we have game six. WE still are in charge. WE will do it. If this were a 2-2 series, I would be worried; but I am OK because Charlie is optimistic… I have learned that Charlie is a great “baseballer” and I really think it can happen Wednesday.
