Stairs’ Blast Sends Phils To Brink Of NL Title
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Tue, October 14, 2008 12:11 AM

Matt Stairs has played 16 major league seasons, and at age 40, with 1,313 career hits, he had the biggest hit of his life Monday night.
Stairs exploded a Jonathan Broxton pitch into the Los Angeles night sky, delivering the two-run blow that handed the Phillies a 7-5 win over the Dodgers. The Phillies lead 3-1 in the best-of-seven National League Championship Series, and are one win away from the sixth World Series berth in franchise history.
The homer by the 40-year-old roughian capped off an incredible eighth inning. Ryan Howard sliced a base hit to bring up Shane Victorino, who hit — now — the biggest home run of his life, a two-run liner that tied the game. Carlos Ruiz — a forgotten gem — got a hit off Broxton to extend the inning, giving Stairs his shot. The man never swung it so well.
The win went to Ryan Madson, who was part of a fantastic Phillies bullpen. Around him was Scott Eyre, who fell victim to a run via a Howard error; JC Romero, who magically slung a double play in the eighth; and Brad Lidge, who worked ferociously to get out of the eighth, then mopped up the ninth with ease for his fifth postseason save.
Joe Blanton had the start and pitched well, but only got five and left with a no-decision.
Other things to write, but the crux: Stairs’ bomb put the Phils a win away. Cole Hamels takes the hill Wednesday with the pennant on the line.

Matt Stairs just wrote himself into Philly’s sports history.
October 14th, 2008 at 12:15 am
Stairs got ALL of that one. This one’s locked up tomorrow. No way they beat King Cole.
On a side note, what is WITH the national TV coverage bias against the Phillies? Every win against the Dodgers, and its been about everything the Dodgers did to allow it to happen and then when the Dodgers did actually win yesterday the Dodgers were apparently going to the World Series. The Phils get no respect.
October 14th, 2008 at 12:17 am
I meant Wednesday, not tomorrow.
October 14th, 2008 at 12:18 am
Who gives a f**k about respect and exposure. We’re winning. I don’t care.
“Let the Louisvilles do the talking.” — Chollie.
Also, Stairs was kinda crying in the dugout after his blast.
October 14th, 2008 at 12:19 am
Yeah I totally agree, the Phillies are getting zero respect. It’s disgusting, every sports writer chose the Dodgers to win the series and now it’s not how the Phillies won the game is how the Dodgers beat themselves…unreal. One more win and it’s bye-bye LA. Let’s go Hamels!
October 14th, 2008 at 12:22 am
dodgerblue- now I know what you meant when you said vic would hurt someone- that’s gotta hurt cory wade’s dignity.
October 14th, 2008 at 12:23 am
Stairs is really being witty in the press conf.
October 14th, 2008 at 12:24 am
That homer by Stairs was an absolute blast! I’m really happy for him, he seems like a class guy.
October 14th, 2008 at 12:27 am
Yeah that was actually a nice part of tonight broadcast- stairs sitting alone in the dugout and soaking in the moment
October 14th, 2008 at 12:28 am
I posted this in the other thread so I’ll post it here.
“Matt Stairs is now a legend in Philadelphia. I love that guy now. I’m so happy to know we’ll have him on the bench again next year.”
October 14th, 2008 at 12:29 am
I am freaking out! Amazing game! I’m so pumped that I don’t think I’m going to get to sleep tonight!
Many thanks to Shane, Stairs, Madson, Lidge and everyone for an excellent win!!!
GO PHILS!
October 14th, 2008 at 12:29 am
I like the quote about “getting your ass hammered” by Stairs, re the guys celebrating his homer. Quality.
October 14th, 2008 at 12:34 am
Lidge , on being asked how they handle this pressure night after night-”most of the time we want to throw up all over ourselves”. LOL
October 14th, 2008 at 12:35 am
From ESPN News: Vic has passed Dykstra for most RBI in a postseason, with 11. Dykstra got his in 12 games in 1993. Vic has played 8 games this postseason.
October 14th, 2008 at 12:37 am
Man what a huge win…I was watching flicking back and forth watch the game and Monday Night football and i turn the game back on and see they tied it up and Matt Stairs is batting with a guy and then he lauches that ball about a mile.
October 14th, 2008 at 12:38 am
I wonder if Mike T. still thinks this is a bad team?
October 14th, 2008 at 12:40 am
HELL YEA BABY!!! PHILLIES ARE ON TOP OF THA WORLD!!! but yea i agree man…..tim mcarver is really pissin me off….no respect for the FIGHTINS, but we’ll just see in the WORLD SERIES BABY!!!
KEEP IT UP PHILLS!!
October 14th, 2008 at 12:48 am
what is there to say about this team, except that they’re amazing. what a ride they’ve had us on, from an awesome season last year where they finally made the playoffs, to one win away from the world series this year. just tremendous.
October 14th, 2008 at 12:49 am
how bout the double play utley made? Man, this team is incredible
October 14th, 2008 at 12:49 am
Matt Stairs…..Priceless
October 14th, 2008 at 12:57 am
yea Phillies.
October 14th, 2008 at 12:58 am
I finally calmed down after massive amounts of excitement. Wow!
October 14th, 2008 at 12:58 am
I’d love to see them win it all. I’ve been waiting my whole life to see a championship in Philadelphia, especially a Phillies championship.
October 14th, 2008 at 1:00 am
Talk about a big-time clutch home run— Stair’s bomb was it!
October 14th, 2008 at 1:01 am
Phil, I was born December ‘83, so it was several month safter the last Philly championship (Sixers), so I’m with you. I’m a bigger Phillies fan more then any of the other 3 teams, so I have been waiting my whole life too.
I was 9 the last time the Phillies were in this position.
October 14th, 2008 at 1:01 am
Another thing I’m excited about is that assuming the Eagles continue to shit the bed and the Phillies win the World Series, I can really see this city becoming a baseball town again. I hate the Eagles.
October 14th, 2008 at 1:02 am
SJ Mike, I was born 12/25/83. haha
October 14th, 2008 at 1:02 am
So was Vic’s home run.
October 14th, 2008 at 1:03 am
Phil, I have 4 days on you! I’m 12/21/83
October 14th, 2008 at 1:04 am
Haha, that’s great, man! We’ve been suffering almost the same identical amount of time.
Although I am a huge Eagles fan also, however, the Phillies are far and away number one in my heart forever.
October 14th, 2008 at 1:07 am
[...] the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers this evening by a score of 7-5, as Matt Stairs capped a four-run Phillies 8th inning with a towering home run off of Dodgers closer Jonathan Broxton, the first home run he’s given up in L.A. since July [...]
October 14th, 2008 at 1:07 am
I hate football. I especially hate the Eagles. I think I hate the Eagles because of how the people of this city worship them, even when they have another team that is about to go to a championship. It pisses me off when you’re listening to 610 in June the day after the Phils win a big game, and you hear some asshole call up to talk about the Eagles.
October 14th, 2008 at 1:11 am
Phil, I can totally understand that. There’s a lot of football nuts out there. I like football, but I love baseball more.
I love the Eagles, don’t get me wrong, but I live or die much more with the Phillies.
I don’t listen to WIP or any of that stuff. The most I do with local Philly coverage is Daily News Live on CSN, but that’s the most I can stomach.
October 14th, 2008 at 1:20 am
I know I haven’t made any of the DC viewing parties, but I’m going to be in the city on Wednesday for softball. The field is like 5 blocks from Capitol Lounge. I’m going to convince my team to drink there afterward. Dooo it.
October 14th, 2008 at 1:39 am
Who Gibson? This one had loss written all over it…I was watching at the bar and the guy behind me says “Shane Victorino 2 run home run!” And on the TV i’m watching, its 10 seconds behind and I think “Jesus, don’t jinx him!”
This would be complete if I knew where to find Harry Kalas’ home run calls.
October 14th, 2008 at 2:34 am
yea, seriously – where can we hear re broadcasts of kalas? to go the whole season with the classic philly style and then have to hear these douche bags who have no passion for your team, is like leaving our howard for the playoffs, harry is that much a part of it. and the delay factor between radio and tv, the technology sucks at this point to try and sync it up. they should have comcast broadcasts of playoff games with revenue sharing with the major networks or something… some kind of arrangement… one day it will be optional announcing through real time broadcasts, so you choose your announcer, including fan networks… some would be funny, etc. that would be like live radio stations which already exist, but for sports. someone with enough energy will for it will get it done, give it 2-5 years
October 14th, 2008 at 6:14 am

October 14th, 2008 at 6:32 am
That ball Stairs hit is still on its way to Hawaii. HUGE!
October 14th, 2008 at 7:57 am
Remember the article after the NLDS win about Stairs feeling more like an observer that part of the team… Well Matty-boy 40 years old having been with almost half of major league baseball or not there’s no escaping he’s part of the team now and he’ll be here for at least another year.
Long-ball dependant maybe, this team could go 7 with anyone right now.
October 14th, 2008 at 7:57 am
Check out Joe Buck’s Wiki page under Major League Baseball on Fox. If they dont catch it (it’s been 25 minutes) you may like what you see.
October 14th, 2008 at 8:07 am
You guys MUST get gyped during Christmas.Having your B-days so close together, people can combine 1 gift for 2 celebrations.Oh well.BTW….Stairs shot looks more like the NLCS turning point. One more to go and you guys can celebrate your teams championship.Good Luck tonight.BTW.Whatever happened to dodgerblue and the RedSox nation?

that’s great. Isaiah, did you write tat?
October 14th, 2008 at 8:21 am
I almost peed my pants good job Isaiah!
October 14th, 2008 at 8:23 am
I may have been able to slip it in. It has been up for 50 minutes. If they remove it they are removing factual information so let’s hope it stays up.
October 14th, 2008 at 8:42 am
Sweet.
Hung on until just before 4am this morning. Watched as the Dodgers went 2 up in the 6th and switched off the TV.
What a shock i got this morning when i popped onto ESPN to see their front page.
October 14th, 2008 at 8:43 am
That. is. hilarious.
October 14th, 2008 at 8:54 am
If multiple posts sorry, waited 10min to post again:

October 14th, 2008 at 9:05 am
I framed this a little bit better then the way I wrote it last night:
Charlie, I was berating you last night for the insertion of Feliz & Taguchi, at a pivotal offense moment in the top of the sixth, that only gave us a tied game. Then the Dodgers came right back in the bottom of the sixth and seemed to sound victory with a two run lead of 5-3. I imagined Joe Torre was thinking about the quote of Admiral Isoruku Yamamoto, “I’m afraid we have awakened a sleeping giant and filled it with terrible resolve”, as Shane and Matt Stairs home runs flew over the Dodger Stadium wall in the top of the eighth.
I need sleep – let’s get off West Coast time Phillies!
October 14th, 2008 at 9:11 am
Before we get off west coast time, let’s wrap it up before the rest of my hair turns gray.
October 14th, 2008 at 9:17 am
That was the greatest win I’ve ever seen from the Phils. (yet!) I’m walking on air today. I almost went to bed after the top of the 7th. But I said, no, I’ll hang in, sleep can wait, I can survive on 3 hours. I would have been seriously PISSED had I gotten up this morning and seen that I had missed this incredible comeback! Remember back in July how many people were suggesting that Vic should be traded at the deadline for a “bigger” bat? Where would this team be now without him? Now hopefully the Cole Train can nail it down tomorrow and ol’ Chollie can take care of his family on Friday instead of managing game 6.
October 14th, 2008 at 9:24 am
This is amazing!!!
I’m getting married in a few weeks.. and the Phillies are 1 win away from the WORLD SERIES!!!
My world is turning upside down!!
October 14th, 2008 at 9:32 am
Yeah, one of the greatest games ever. I went into this series not really hating the Dodgers – but now ugh I cannot wait to send them packing!!
So happy for Matt Stairs (!!!) but lets also give props to Chooch for some good cluch hitting so Stairs could blast him in too!!
October 14th, 2008 at 9:48 am
When Stairs hit that HR last night I couldn’t believe it… Quite possibly the best moment I’ve ever enjoyed in my life. I agree with MP, sometimes I feel bad for teams that lose tight games like that, but I cannot wait to see them eliminated. I’m hoping we’re in their heads now, and that we can push them out in LA with a 14 – 2 win or something like that… I want to see the Dodgers fans leave in the 4th inning.
October 14th, 2008 at 9:48 am
Yeah, I got REAL sick of TV coverage. Finally wised up and laid on the couch with the radio on, the TV turned down and my eyes closed. That’s when EVERYTHING happened!!!! Much better listening to Franske and L.A. calling the Victorino and Stairs shots than those idiots Buck and McCarver. Anytime I wanted to see a replay I just opened my eyes and could see it. Try it everyone……it’s much more rewarding!!! Also, I agree, Cole and Co. needs to wrap this up so Uncle Chollie can deal with things on Friday. GOOOOOOOO PHILLIES!!!!!!!!!!!
October 14th, 2008 at 9:52 am
The thought of turning off the tv crossed my mind when we went down 5-3. Sooooo glad I didn’t! There is nothing that can make me have a bad day today.
Didn’t really hate the Dodgers at all until this series either.
Ruiz has been a pleasant surprise at the plate, although I was cursing him when he let the 3rd strike get away from him there.
I’m looking at it this way we need 1 of 3 and 5 out of a possible 10.
October 14th, 2008 at 9:52 am
Is there anyway someone can get the radio HR calls from Franske and LA and post them on here?
October 14th, 2008 at 9:55 am
I was a nervous wreck last night literally, I couldn’t be happier today, I don’t know if there is anything, I mean anything that could ruin my day!!! Let’s go Cole!!!
October 14th, 2008 at 9:56 am
I’m sure there are links to those calls somewhere……maybe Phils website???
October 14th, 2008 at 10:12 am
Yeah, big ups to Chooch for some decent work at the plate in this series as well as behind it. He’s quietly been johnny on the spot in this series. Getting on base, keeping innings going. Just did a little digging and found some surprising numbers. He’s batting .417(!) in the LCS with a BB, an RBI and 3 runs. Maybe he should give some hitting instruction to Howard and J-Roll!!!
October 14th, 2008 at 10:18 am
Chuck – wasn’t able to find them. If anyone finds a link to Franske and LA’s HR calls last night please post them here.
October 14th, 2008 at 10:24 am
Yeah, Chooch is coming up big. All season, I would always feels that he was an automatic out. He’s finding a way to contibute now when it counts. Great arm, too!! Actually Howard’s been looking better at the plate the last game or two. I have a feeling he’s gonna have a big game Wed.
October 14th, 2008 at 10:27 am
NEPA, I tried googling the calls but could not find them. They have to be somewhere. Maybe WPHT 1210’s site. I’ll look.
October 14th, 2008 at 10:44 am
NEPA, I just finished getting them. I’ll try to upload them.
October 14th, 2008 at 10:45 am
Nice – thanks Jamie. Can’t wait to get out of class and listen to them.
October 14th, 2008 at 10:47 am
Awesome, I can’t wait to listen.
October 14th, 2008 at 10:48 am
why wasn’t the legendary harry kalas at the mic in the 8th inning, i heard the calls replayed during sports rise and can’t help but wonder where he is. did franske take of play-by-play? i know harry takes breaks, was this his off inning?
October 14th, 2008 at 10:53 am
Wow, listening to the ‘Herd’ on ESPN radio… He is absolutely bashing the possibility of a Phillies / Rays series. He’s going as far to say, “I think there should be a consolation series for the Dodgers and Red Sox”… Sad thing is, he’s said this multiple times, I don’t think he’s kidding.
They played a fake promo for a Phillies / Rays WS, as a Phillies fan, I can’t say I laughed, I just thought it was ridiculous.
Who cares of the nation doesn’t watch, this years playoff run is for the Phillies fans, everyone else can watch their college football if they want…
October 14th, 2008 at 10:53 am
Franske did play-by-play. L.A. was awesome in the background. I think these guys are BETTER than Harry and Wheels. (Don’t get me wrong…..I love “It’s outta here” Harry, but I think Franske is more energetic overall in his calling of a game)
October 14th, 2008 at 10:57 am
I’m waiting for instructions on how / where to upload them, NEPA.
October 14th, 2008 at 10:58 am
Yea, we’ll get them up.
October 14th, 2008 at 10:59 am
They’re being sent to Brian as we speak, so they should be up soon, hopefully!
October 14th, 2008 at 10:59 am
Phils2611 is there anyway to listen to a replay of what they are saying about a Phils/Rays WS? I’m interested in listening to that. It will give me a goo dlaugh to start my morning.
October 14th, 2008 at 11:02 am
I agree with Chuck. Franske has way more emotion than Harry, but I like the two different “teams” in the booth. And to answer someone else’s question, since the HR’s were in the 8th, it was Franske and LA in the booth. I don’t think Harry and Wheels were even broadcasting at the time, because there isn’t television coverage like there is during the regular season for them to switch to. Am I right?
October 14th, 2008 at 11:03 am
Unfortunately no, it’s a live stream from ESPNradio.com…
He’s on every day from 10am – 1pm… and he normally repeats this stuff multiple times per show. Wish I could have snagged a snippet of the audio from the show.
October 14th, 2008 at 11:04 am
Is his radio show on espn.com?
October 14th, 2008 at 11:05 am
Go to espnradio.com and then click the button on the right hand side that says, “Click here to listen live”. Mark Whalberg is being interviewed now, maybe Philly will come up…
October 14th, 2008 at 11:12 am
I’m listening to it now. This guy sounds like a moron.
October 14th, 2008 at 11:16 am
Yeah… You’ll hear him talk about how his markets are LA, Texas, Atlanta… so that’s why he’s bashing the Phillies / Rays… He basically said, if that happens, check back in a week, because I won’t be talking baseball.
October 14th, 2008 at 11:25 am
For anyone that hasn’t seen the photo of Stairs admiring his shot, go to Philly.com’s web site under the Game 4 Photo Gallery, and look at Photo #13. I love Russell Martin’s body language there.

October 14th, 2008 at 11:30 am
Owned.
October 14th, 2008 at 11:50 am
Great photo, Jamie. Yeah, Martin’s like……”Oh, sh–!!!!”
October 14th, 2008 at 1:07 pm
Don M – it’s going to be easy for you to remember your anniversary.
Jamie – thanks for the link
October 14th, 2008 at 1:15 pm
my big day is 11-1-08 … so it was already going to be easy to remember…
Not to get ahead of myself but i’ve been thinking for a few months how crazy it would be if they have a parade down Broad Street…. and i’d miss it because i’ll be in Acapulco for my Honeymoon !!!
My bachelor party is this Sat.. so a possible Game#7
and World Series game #7 would be Thurs. Oct 30th.. the night of my Rehearsal Dinner… buggin
October 14th, 2008 at 1:24 pm
Your buddies should just take you to a bar to watch game 7 if necessary…
If your wife to be loves you, she’ll provide a TV
And if you’re on your honeymoon, have a friend go, record the parade, then watch it when you get back
October 14th, 2008 at 1:27 pm
We’re having it at a restaurant/bar… in the side, private dinning room.. but the main bar is right next door.. and no lie, when we booked it, I told her that I prefered the other place we didn’t get because it had two TVs in the room, and I wasn’t sure what the World Series schedule was.. BUT.. etc…
So I still hope there are only 5 Phillies games left this season!! and that would allow me to celebrate in style and get my responsibilities out of the way.
Yea, a game #7 this Saturday takes priority over looking at juggs… hopefully we win tomrw, and Saturday I can help girls pay for college!
October 14th, 2008 at 2:23 pm
What a shot by Stairs.
October 14th, 2008 at 2:43 pm
Hey Don, you’re getting married on my birthday! And it’s really nice of you to help out those college girls.
October 14th, 2008 at 2:53 pm
I knew when they got Stairs in late Auqust that something big was gonna happen!
October 14th, 2008 at 2:59 pm
I heard that every dollar helps them earn a degree… and really, I’m all about helping hardworking young women in any way I can.
October 14th, 2008 at 4:47 pm
“You want to get that one big hit where you feel like you’re part of the team”,l
Stairs said. “Not that I don’t feel like I’m part of the team, by no means, but when you get that nice celebrations coning into the dugout and you’re getting your ass hammered by guys, it’s no better feeling than to have that done.”
Matt Stairs, quoted after the big hit.
You have to love the big guy!
October 14th, 2008 at 6:11 pm
Yeah, I love his honesty. He said that he tries to hit a homer every time he come up to the plate. At least he admit it.
July 5th, 2009 at 2:55 pm
I liked so much my honeymoon vacations
. I found your blog on google and read a few of your other posts. I just added you to my Google News Reader. Look forward to reading more from you in the future.
