World Series Game 1 : Phillies At Rays
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Wed, October 22, 2008 05:00 PM

Game 1 : 2008 World Series
Philadelphia Phillies at Tampa Bay Rays
Tropicana Field, St. Petersburg
8:35 p.m. / 72, fair
Cole Hamels (14-10 3.09 ERA) vs. Scott Kazmir (12-8, 3.49 ERA)
It’s the start of the 2008 World Series, with Cole Hamels of the Phillies facing Scott Kazmir of the Rays.
News & Notes
Hamels owns a 1.23 ERA and 0.86 WHIP in three postseason starts. … Hamels was named NLCS MVP after winning two games against the Dodgers, including the clinching game five. … Kazmir owns a 4.02 ERA and 1.52 WHIP in three postseason starts. Kazmir has thrown an average of 102 pitches in the postseason, on par with the 102 average he has thrown in 2008, and in his career. … Of Rays hitters, only Carl Crawford has any real success against Hamels, with an RBI and two hits in three at bats. It’s a small sample size, otherwise. … Kazmir is practically the same against the Phillies. In his small sample, Jimmy Rollins is 1-for-2 and So Taguchi is 1-for-3. Pat Burrell does own two walks against him. … Chase Utley was an unsung hero of the NLCS, hitting .353 with a home run and three RBI. … Charlie Manuel has called on Chris Coste to be his designated hitter. … The Phillies will have played every American League East team in the World Series — Boston (1915), New York (1950), Baltimore (1983) and Toronto (1993). All series were losses. … The last time the final two digits of the calendar year were some combination of 0 and 8, the Phillies won the World Series.
The Lineup
Jimmy Rollins / SS
Jayson Werth / RF
Chase Utley / 2B
Ryan Howard / 1B
Pat Burrell / LF
Shane Victorino / CF
Pedro Feliz / 3B
Chris Coste / DH
Carlos Ruiz / C
Your Gamenight Beer
From Downingtown’s Victory Brewing Co. comes Hop Devil IPA. Why Hop Devil? Because tonight we need Cole Hamels to make the Rays look like the Devil Rays, that team that really, really sucked for a long, long time. The ace has to put them in their place. And watch him do such a thing by drinking a fantastic, hoppy beer. Do it at home, or at the bar, or outside, or in Tampa, or wherever the heck you’re watching. But you’re watching. Oh yes. It’s the World Series! Let’s do it!
Go Phillies!

I am grabbing some Victory Beers for tonights game. They are the only Philly area beers I can get out here in Northern California.
Go Phillies!
October 22nd, 2008 at 5:09 pm
Hop Devil and Prima Pils are two of my favorites…. awesome stuff.
October 22nd, 2008 at 5:16 pm
This is going to be a very long 3 hours.
October 22nd, 2008 at 5:17 pm
Charlie should have switched the last three batters. Coste is a much better hitter than both of them.
7. Coste DH
8. Feliz 3B
9. Ruiz C
That is just my opinion.
October 22nd, 2008 at 5:25 pm
I just shaved my reverse mohawk! I’m going nuts here!
October 22nd, 2008 at 5:25 pm
Well Carlitos Ruiz has been “on fire” in the playoffs. I also think that having Coste in the bottom of the lineup is in case they do have to put him in as a catcher, hence our lineup won’t be broken even if we lose the DH.
I think Charlie is being conservative/traditional in this Series. Werth is not in the No. 3 spot, for example, Taguchi stays in the roster, Coste as the last batter, etc… Lets hope this works for us.
I suggest everyone get their nail clippers now.
GO PHILS!
October 22nd, 2008 at 5:29 pm
too bad I don’t drink any more.
i’ll be on philly.com’s sports chat room thingie tonight with some other phillies phans. Insofar as each of us phillies phans are experts and we know better than either Manager, we will give some very profound thoughts on the play by play.
Also, we will complain vociferously about the announcers on Fox. Since the media is out to get us Phillies phans as evidenced by their sycophantic brown-nosing of a Mister M. Ramirez, I will join the other phans in the hurling of the usual invectives and expletives. Many of my expletives will begin with the letter “F” as is my wont being from Philadelphia originally.
I have patiently explained to the little mrs that we deserve to win because of what the Yankme’s did to us in 1950.
October 22nd, 2008 at 5:37 pm
A little over 3 hours til go time!
October 22nd, 2008 at 5:41 pm
Headed down to the local fire company tonite to watch the game with some buddies and drink a few beers (actually many beers, especially when Buck or McCarver start to talk).
Let’s go Phils!!!!!!!!!! Lets do this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
October 22nd, 2008 at 5:43 pm
Has anyone else been watching everything they say and do for fear of jinxing the Phillies? I’ve been more superstitious this week than ever.
October 22nd, 2008 at 5:48 pm
I have some really embarrassing things I’ve done for jinx removing / good karma this week. ill only share if we win.
October 22nd, 2008 at 5:53 pm
lets just say my jerseys and shirts are all a little dirty
October 22nd, 2008 at 5:57 pm
I seriously don’t know what to do with myself. How do I go about this in the least douchebaggy way?
October 22nd, 2008 at 5:58 pm
I pulled my 1980 Phillies Fever tee out of storage right around the time they started winning back in Sept. I hung it over the loft railing and it hasn’t moved since. I touch it and smooth it out every day, several times.
October 22nd, 2008 at 6:12 pm
LET’S GO PHILLIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
October 22nd, 2008 at 6:12 pm
Hahaha georgie. mutley, i’m excited to hear these. i just find myself thinking things like “what hat was i wearing when they won the pennant?”
here’s another thing i thought was symbolic:
i went to the room across the hall in my dorm and went to get a cup of orange juice. just as i was about to pour it, one of the people from the room was like that might be bad. then i looked at it and saw it was tropicana and realized i shouldnt drink it now anyway and threw it away. i know it small but its meaningful.
October 22nd, 2008 at 6:16 pm
The lineup in phillies.com actually has
Coste, then Ruiz.
October 22nd, 2008 at 6:21 pm
The Curse of Billy Penn ends NOW! We can stop living to stop a jinx after 25 years after this series is over. It is OUR time!!!

October 22nd, 2008 at 6:23 pm
Phillies.com also had Werth second and Victorino sixth.

October 22nd, 2008 at 6:32 pm
Air Force guy here in TX and believe it or not I was stationed in Tampa up until July, we would get in DRays/Rays games for nothing just for showing up with a decent haircut…anyway I was at the 1 1/2 games these guys played in March and the only difference is that the Rays were the same team we knocked the dust off and are a heck of a lot better now……..GO PHILS!!!
October 22nd, 2008 at 6:41 pm
dan, you can never be too careful at times like this.
October 22nd, 2008 at 6:46 pm
This is the official lineup for tonight’s game:
1. Jimmy Rollins SS
2. Jayson Werth RF
3. Chase Utley 2B
4. Ryan Howard 1B
5. Pat Burrell LF
6. Shane Victorino CF
7. Pedro Feliz 3B
8. Chris Coste DH
9. Carlos Ruiz C
10. Cole Hamels P !!!!!!!!!!
A little over an hour to go.
The Fighting Philadelphia Phillies Will Win Tonight.
L-E-T-S G-O P-H-I-L-S !!!!!!!!
October 22nd, 2008 at 6:55 pm
I think I’d rather Werth in the 6th spot vs. a lefty and Vic in the 2 hole setting the table. But I feel like Vic is going to make a big difference no matter where you put him.
October 22nd, 2008 at 6:58 pm
On ESPN is MLB Clutch Performer of 2008.
October 22nd, 2008 at 6:58 pm
LET’S GO PHILLIES!!!
I’m so nervous…
October 22nd, 2008 at 7:03 pm
Man I’m nervous… Off to a bar to calm my nerves! GO PHILS!!!!!
October 22nd, 2008 at 7:05 pm
Need to get this out of the way:
1. We hates Joe Buck
2. Everyone on Fox that will pick the other team is wrong
3. There will be too many commercials
4. Stop saying “Team of Destiny”
5. No, Manny is still not in the World Series this year
October 22nd, 2008 at 7:07 pm
If I hear any more commentary about Manny Ramirez, someone at Fox is going to get some hatemail
October 22nd, 2008 at 7:07 pm
Sorry about that — ESPN had the lineup earlier; the official one is not theirs then. I edited that.
October 22nd, 2008 at 7:10 pm
Before I start drinking and before the Series starts, I just wanted to thank everyone who runs this site and everyone who contributes on a regular basis. It’s been a very exciting year, you’ve helped me kill a lot of time at work and I appreciate this site for everything that it is.
Lets get ‘em boys!!
LETS GO PHILLIES!
October 22nd, 2008 at 7:17 pm
Hey Moses, glad to hear you’re doing everything in your power to not jinx the phils…throw out that tropicana. I for one have knocked on so much wood all week when I talk about the phils. Anything for my boys in red and white. Lets go phillies!!!!
October 22nd, 2008 at 7:18 pm
Did anyone see Joe Buck interviewed on Daily News Live? He said the only thing he hopes for as a fan is a long series with a lot of action.
Funny, I thought he hated baseball!

October 22nd, 2008 at 7:28 pm
1 LOOOOOOONG Hour to Go.
Let’s go Phillies. Let’s go send those Rays back home without a world series victory. Let’s put the Phillies on top since 1980. They deserve this.
Put on ALL your PHILLIES memorablia on. Brace yourself. Hope they win.
AND…
LET’S GO PHILS.
October 22nd, 2008 at 7:45 pm
my game time beer….
whatever I got in the fridge! (it’s XX right now)
I want a big first inning from the phils!
October 22nd, 2008 at 7:48 pm
Before i say what I have to say, both Phillies and Devil Rays earned the trip to the Fall Classic. Now I know that I am gonna get a lot of flack for this, and yet as a die hard Amazin fan, this to me is the Mets worst case scenerio come true.I am looking for the Devil Rays to win this series.Coupling the Devil Rays have a good Young raw and unproven team, and the Phils with the week off may show some ring rust (see 2007 Rockies). Also my wish for the Devil Rays to in is because of the Kazmir trade. So this way REALLY and OFFICIALLY this makes the Wilpons,Jim Duquette, even Al Leiter and Johnny Franco rue the day they traded Kazmir for Victor Zambrano. If the Phillies win,so be it.
October 22nd, 2008 at 7:50 pm
Almost game time…
October 22nd, 2008 at 7:52 pm
Miner,
Please let me know when your first born celebrates their 8th birthday party so I can come over and piss on the floor. Get out of our party.
Sincerely,
CM
October 22nd, 2008 at 7:55 pm
Miner, I 2nd that… I have to pee really bad too.
October 22nd, 2008 at 7:56 pm
CM……..Very funny, yet my firstborn is 10.Would you rather me lie to you or be brutally honest?I never said I wish the Phillies dead, all I said was it looks like the Devil Rays are going to win, like it or not.
October 22nd, 2008 at 7:56 pm
Chase Mutley, Miner’s been pretty cool on here, cut him some slack, he loves his team just like we do, but look what they’ve done to him the last two years.
October 22nd, 2008 at 7:56 pm
Play Ball ON FOX.
Live From Game 1.
The team from Fox.
Tune in NOW.
GO PHILS!!!!!
Let the best Philly Win!!!!
October 22nd, 2008 at 7:57 pm
I CANNOT HANDLE THIS WAIT ANYMORE!!!!!
October 22nd, 2008 at 7:58 pm
have on all my Phillies stuff – check
eating water ice and soft pretzels – check
already losing patience with announcers – check
October 22nd, 2008 at 7:59 pm
Rays only look like they are going to win because the media has been on their knees for them ever since they beat the Red Sox… Heck, a commentator even said on ESPN today… “The Phillies, the forgotten team of this series…”
The media wants the Rays to win because it gives them a better angle, and they will get as many people to believe this as possible. Even if the Phillies jump on the Rays and destroys them, we’ll get no love.
October 22nd, 2008 at 7:59 pm
If you are gonna root for Tampa, at least call them by their real name, the Rays. I thought by this point people would have gotten in figured out that they dropped the Devil.
October 22nd, 2008 at 7:59 pm
CM….one more thing,I never got personal in here with pot shots…..Did the Phillies deserve to win the NL Pennant, hello yes and tipped my Mets cap to you guys because they deserved it…HOWEVER,if you want me to lie or waiver my feeling on the fall classic, you better think again.Good Luck.
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:01 pm
The Guy all the way to the right Said,
“PHILLIES in Six”.
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:02 pm
Screw ESPN and the pundits.Bottom line,in 20 minutes, both teams will be ready to play ball, time to put up or shut up…..BTW,thanx Georgie.
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:04 pm
Does anyone know if they’ll show the player introductions in Philly as well?
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:05 pm
Let’s win this sh*t!
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:05 pm
Also as of calling them the Devil Rays,I also call the Ducks the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, and the California Angels…..Sorry Jeff, you can’t hide from the past.
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:06 pm
Miner, I’ll vouch for you too. You’re generally very classy here.
But do remember that you are on a Phils blog, so many fans here aren’t going to take too classy to rooting against the Phils.
By the way, they should not make Charlie run for opening lineups. I just feel bad when I see him run.
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:07 pm
Wow, I must say, I’m impressed with the reactions to the Philly introductions in Tampa. They aren’t being ass holes haha. They won’t like us in Philly…
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:08 pm
Its not hiding from the past its calling them their name. But live in the past if you wish, I am watching the present and that Phillies are in the World Series and thats all that matters.
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:10 pm
Wow, these fans seem quiet.
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:11 pm
World Series time, go Phillies!!!
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:11 pm
FWIW, I’ve posted here all year. I know Miner is legit and he’s usually a stand up dude but why on earth would you think it’s appropriate to come on a team’s blog and say that you’re rooting for the other team?
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:11 pm
And these guys are really f-ing up the National Anthem.
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:12 pm
Ok, I love the National Anthem, but the Backstreet Boys are seriously making it much longer then it should be.
And just doing funky things with it.
Then again, I hate the Backstreet Boys.
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:12 pm
Not to mention GAME ONE OF THE WORLD SERIES?! I’ve waited 15 years for this. I don’t want to hear what a Mets fan thinks about anything right now, let alone that he’s rooting for the other team.
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:12 pm
Worst anthem performance since rosanne barr
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:14 pm
Chase Mutley, ok, we get your point, can we please move on now?
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:15 pm
Worst anthem performance since rosanne barr
definitely the gayest.
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:15 pm
was pretty bad, is Wierd Al booked for tomorrow night to parody?
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:16 pm
AHHH, JOE BUCK!
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:17 pm
I am even more glad to be a Phillies fan right now. If I were a Rays fan, I would have a hard time seeing the choice of the Backstreet Boys for the National Anthem as anything but a very bad omen for the Rays management ability to make decisions in this series! And that includes Joe Maddon. OK, maybe I’m reading too much into it, but man, those BBs made the bombs bursting in air smell like stink bombs.
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:18 pm
Let’s go already!!
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:19 pm
The one on the right looked like a porn star.
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:20 pm
It.
Our.
Time.
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:21 pm
The scary thing is a good friend of mine is still stuck on the Backstreet Boys phase of her life and still a big fan.
Scary, because that really sucked.
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:22 pm
Hey, tim how come I haven’t seen pabst for the gameday beer? I think it would be a perfect fit especially with the phils workman like attitude all year. LETS GO PHILS!!!
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:22 pm
Porn star… Their not called the ‘Backstreet Boys’ for nothing…
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:22 pm
Ooo, Mr. Michael Jack is doing our starting lineups. That is AWESOME!
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:23 pm
nice, schmidt reading the starting line up, that’s gotta be good luck…
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:23 pm
Mike Schmidt is announcing the Phillies lineup for fox.
PLAY BALL
GO PHILS!!!!!!
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:24 pm
how bout him calling Howard next mvp!
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:24 pm
I like the props he gave to Utley and Burrell also.
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:26 pm
Man, I’m poppin dark chocolate Wilbur buds like there’s no tomorrow.
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:27 pm
Why.
Can’t.
Us.
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:28 pm
Might be done with fox before the first pitch is thrown
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:28 pm
Whats with the giant ring of security around the field?
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:28 pm
if i hear 6 day layoff again, omg. can we please just whoop up on kazmir? lets put the rays in their place.
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:29 pm
HERE WE GO!
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:30 pm
The angle of this behind the mound camera sucks.
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:30 pm
This is such a bizarre pitcher to home plate camera angle.
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:31 pm
Yeah Nepa, it wasn’t that bad for tbs during the alcs….wtf fox????
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:31 pm
Why do they need Security at the outfield wall? If you jump down, you are going to hurt yourself, so you would not be able to run anyhow.
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:31 pm
Is that tank of Rays within a place that homerun balls can hit it? Because seriously, can’t one of them die if hit?
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:32 pm
Oh man…here we are. Finally! LET’S GO PHILS!
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:33 pm
Balls can go into the tank.
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:33 pm
That’s inhumane to have all those rays in that little tank out there.
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:34 pm
First of all jeff,I am strictly old school on lots of sports names and I also do live in the present…that said I am aware and I knew that I would get a lot of flack and am aware of the negativity that I had given would be handed back to me as such. Most of you have been first rate and I’d chug down beers with any of you, while others aren’t that perceptive with what I say.I tip my Mets cap to you guys because the Phillies deserved to be where they are as the Mets deserve be where they are.
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:35 pm
It would take quite a shot to get it out to the tank, I would doubt it would ever be a problem.
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:36 pm
UTLEYYYYY!
woo
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:36 pm
What a great start and at bat for Utley!
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:36 pm
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH GO PHILS!!!!!!!!! I LOVE UTLEY!
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:36 pm
Gone!!!
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:36 pm
What a start. Huge by Utley.
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:36 pm
wooooooohoooooo
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:36 pm
YYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!
way to start the game Chase!
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:36 pm
I am sure they take good care of them. The aquarium probably comes by.
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:36 pm
Well, well, well…they certainly are rusty. Rays will sweep us in 4 for sure…
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:37 pm
CHASE!!!!!!!!!
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:37 pm

October 22nd, 2008 at 8:37 pm
WHOOO! Great start!
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:38 pm
Great start
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:39 pm
sure glad AL pitchers pitch underhand
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:39 pm
If Howard can work the pitchers like Utley just did, he’s gonna be smokin’.
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:39 pm
Okay, 19 pitches in the first inning. Gotta make him work more and get on these suckers.
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:39 pm
What a Start. A Two-run Homerun by Chutley.
Here we go. Hollywood Hamels now just has to shut them down.
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:39 pm
Wow CM I really don’t care anymore. I have no problem with you being on here, all I care about right now is the game. And go UTLEY!!!
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:40 pm
let’s go cole! solid first inning!
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:40 pm
Am I dreaming?
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:41 pm
Haha, Carl Crawford is an ass.
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:41 pm
Georgie said at 10:42 am today on PN “tonight is game 1′-”I woke up this am thinking Chase Utley, don’t know what that means but I get these weird feelings that usually pan out.”
hahahaha- I’m psychic!
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:41 pm
Still only the first inning. Gotta keep this going.
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:42 pm
christ howard
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:43 pm

October 22nd, 2008 at 8:43 pm
Howard has to make that play!
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:44 pm
Nicely done, fellas…nicely done!
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:44 pm
Great double play on the check swing.
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:44 pm
YES! DP!
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:44 pm
See? Told ya. Double play.
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:44 pm
Dave, can we get another prediction? Maybe something along the lines of runs on our side?
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:44 pm
I know Upton is not that slow. He didn’t bust it down the line at all.
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:45 pm
Nice play from everyone on that one. Defense wins championships. Sorry, had to day it before McCarver did.
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:45 pm
Did you see that look on Jimmy’s face? Bizness time, baby!
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:45 pm
Eleven pitches, great inning! Upton didn’t even run that DP out, huh?
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:46 pm
I still can’t believe I’m watching the Phillies play in the World Series!
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:47 pm
SJ, I know, I think that same thing about every 5 minutes or so.
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:47 pm
believe it Mike (I’m a Mike too)
i’m just doing my best to be calm and just enjoy the ride.
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:48 pm
I know, I’m just freakin’ giddy as hell watching this
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:49 pm
Great way to make-up for the mistake.
END OF 1st
Back to the phillies bats.
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:49 pm

October 22nd, 2008 at 8:50 pm
shane is our pete rose
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:50 pm
I like what are batters have done against Kashmir so far.
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:51 pm
did they change the order of the lineup? the one they had on here had Vic in the 2 hole
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:52 pm
I’m not watching the game, because I am working, with that two questions……A-Are Buck and McCarver dry humping the Devil Rays and B-After the National Anthem….did the Backdoor Boys scratch their crotches and spit on the ground?
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:53 pm
@SJ Mike…totally agree there.
i love that we can scare one of there pitchers.
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:53 pm
Victorino got a lucky call there. I think he might have been out judging by the replay.
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:54 pm
Was McCarver on the 1980 postseason roster? Or does that explain his hatred of the Phils?
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:55 pm
McCarver was a broadcaster for the Phils in 1980 I believe. I think it was his first year.
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:55 pm
come on Ruiz!
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:55 pm
They did change the order here. It was wrong.
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:55 pm
J-Roll needs to come up big for us front-running fans here
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:55 pm
OMG those are some fat fans. Holy S.
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:56 pm
GREAT start. it’s awesome seeing them work kazmir like this.
and yeah, it’s been said, but man this camera angle sucks.
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:56 pm
Jesus I am awful tonight, let’s go Chooch
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:58 pm
this is the first time I have done my radio show while watching the game and posting here, bear with me….
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:59 pm
Looks like the “unbeatable” Kazmir and the Rays are a little worried and out of sync.
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:59 pm
bases are loaded with Phillies
oh happy day
come on come on come on
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:59 pm
Come J-Roll, a huge opportunity here.
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:59 pm
lets go Rollins
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:59 pm
blah
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:00 pm
Why would you send Victorino there? It was so shallow.
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:00 pm
Matty shouldn’t that be “Jesus tap dancing Christ”?
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:00 pm
Oooops. But that was a great throw. If its not right on the money, Vic scores.
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:00 pm
good god take a pitch. 1-0? Come on
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:00 pm
what a stupid send with Utley on deck
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:01 pm
Werth was on deck.
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:02 pm
I said that live on-air tonight Georgie, fear not
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:02 pm
J-Roll up with the bases and could not get it down. Wow.
Back to Cole Hamels pitching.
Kazmir has 40 pitches in 2 innings.
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:02 pm
my bad.
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:04 pm
They have wiffed pretty good at Hamels changeup so far.
Good strikeout to Longoria.
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:05 pm
It was aggressive, didn’t work out but I like seeing these guys trust Cole and their showing up which is what at least I was worried they were going to start slow as per but their sharp and loose.
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:06 pm
Granted, that was a great gun at the plate there and had to be a perfect throw to work, but I still would’ve held Victorino up.
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:07 pm
Gotta love the Hawii shout out on Vic’s intro
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:07 pm
I’ll take aggressive. If that throw isn’t dead on, Vic scores.
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:08 pm
I would have held Vic aswell, but then I remember how things have gone before for teams heavily rested and the fact the Phils start slow and see the score and Kazmir’s pitch count and feel very good.
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:08 pm
Cole is dealin’!
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:09 pm
Hamels is doing a great job.
Keep up the bats.
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:09 pm
I thought Victorino could have run over the catcher, at least done some damage. The Rays look totally befuddled by Hamels. Kazmir may not survive the next inning, at this rate.
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:09 pm
By the way, if you get tired of listening to Buck and McCarver, turn down the volume, my show is on right now, and at the 10 p.m. hour we will be playing our interview with Brian Michael (you may know him from a little place called Phillies Nation). Lots of World Series talk tonight.
http://www.centralmainesportsblog.com (in the blue widget)
I will of course be staying here for continued sarcastic commentary throughout the night.
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:11 pm
Nice double by Werth.
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:11 pm
yea Werth
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:11 pm
ALRIGHT WERTH! LET’S GET ANOTHER DINGER CHASE!
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:12 pm
Kazmir looks like he’s trying to be in control on the mound but it’s showing he doesn’t look wholy comfertable.
That bloop is going to kill Kazmir’s night!
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:13 pm
Jayson Werth gets a double. Chase Utley up.
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:13 pm
Kashmir def. doesn’t look comfortable.
The thing I don’t get is most of the Rays’ young pitching throws mainly heat. Little offspeed or breaking stuff. Fastballs galore.
How has that been so hard to hit for AL teams?
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:14 pm
Nice good situational from Utley
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:15 pm
Ryan Howard up with Jayson Werth on third.
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:15 pm
All Howard has to do is get one deep into the outfield…
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:15 pm
Kazmir has been hit by the AL the writers/analysts just didn’t want to talk about it and don’t want to talk about the fact Garza gets killed on the road in the open.
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:16 pm
Howard better get him home. Can’t leave runners on third for 2 consecutive innings.
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:16 pm
dammit howard!
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:16 pm
Dammit Howard.
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:17 pm
I know it is beating a dead horse, but this camera angle is still awful.
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:17 pm
The way Howards swinging he shouldn’t be checking, he got hot by choosing an area of the zone and hoping the ball was there for him to mail it.
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:18 pm
howard and burrell are hurting out there.
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:18 pm
…. Burrell and Howard, 4 ABs, 3 Ks.
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:19 pm
Could not get it done, again.
Middle of the third.
Scott Kazmir has 55 pitches in 3 innings.
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:19 pm
Let’s hope those LOB won’t come back to hurt us
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:20 pm
At least their 2nd AB’s came in the 3rd and not the 5th, there’s time for them to adjust.
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:20 pm
Matty, I logged on to your radio show, not a group of happy campers on there. LOL
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:22 pm
WHY THE HELL DID HOWARD GET GIVEN THE DUTY TO CATCH THAT POP UP WITH EVERYONE THERE???
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:22 pm
Love the Bonds/HGH era bashing from Sutcliffe!
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:23 pm
… That sets up the double-play….
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:25 pm
come on Cole! reign it in!
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:25 pm
Hamels is having his first troubles.
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:26 pm
… So why does Cholly have a stopwatch?
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:27 pm
oy, not good not good not good
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:29 pm
I am one of the non happy campers right now
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:29 pm
Hamels is really putting himself in a hole.
It is probably not a stopwatch. He is probably counting the pitches of Hamels and Kazmir.
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:29 pm
Oh hell. Send Lidge out there to talk to him,
“It’s no big deal, man, happens all the time. This is what makes baseball fun!”
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:29 pm
Gigantic double play!
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:30 pm
solid DB
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:30 pm
YES! DAMMIT YES COLE!
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:30 pm
COME ON!!!
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:30 pm
Upton’s have a heluva game, guys!
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:30 pm
beautiful
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:30 pm
….. Thank God for Pedro.
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:30 pm
….. Thank God for Pedro.
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:30 pm
I mean, DP lol.
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:30 pm
BJ Upton looks like Jim Rice out there…the 1989 version…I love it!!!!!!!!
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:31 pm
lol. King Cole’s money!
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:31 pm
Great double play by pedro feliz.
Hamels has 44 pitches in 3 innings. A little high, but not doing to bad.
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:31 pm
Upton’s running to first like Travis Hafner
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:33 pm
I’ve just about had it with Buck and Co, he gets these subtle little digs in on the Phillies at every opportunity.
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:34 pm
alright vic! let’s put some pressure on them again!
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:34 pm
Is it just me or was that first pitch to Pedro right down the middle? Maybe its the camera angle.
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:35 pm
Vic gets a single. Pedro up.
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:35 pm
Georgie, WPHT is pretty well synched with the TV right now. I muted Joe Buck and am much happier for it.
Besides, Harry Kalas is working the 4th inning with his son Todd right now and that’s pretty cool.
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:36 pm
yea Victorino, Feliz ! !
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:37 pm
1st and 2nd with Chris Coste up!!!
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:37 pm
Why are you giving us play by play?
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:39 pm
like hell that was a strike! that was outside dammit
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:39 pm
i’ll take that. every run counts.
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:39 pm
woo, i’ll take it
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:39 pm
good job Ruiz, 3-0
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:40 pm
come on J-roll
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:40 pm
RBI from Ruiz.
Phils up 3-0.
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:41 pm
wow, jimmy looks lost out there.
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:41 pm
Is anyone else getting sick of the Rocky music after every inning we score? It’s so stupid.
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:41 pm
You know what’s funny. When I got off of my video shoot today, I got in to catch Michael Barkan interviewing Joe Buck on Daily News Live.
Barkan asked Buck about the bias and Buck seemed taken aback at the claims that he plays favorites. He made it seem like it is unwarranted.
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:41 pm
manufacturing a run!
very un-phillies like (:
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:43 pm
J-Roll needs to get it together!!
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:43 pm
Dave, the stopwatch Cholly has is used to determine pitch speed, delivery time, etc. It’s a “special” kind of stopwatch.
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:44 pm
Kazmir has 71 pitches in 4 innings.
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:44 pm
one pitch out, awesome!
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:44 pm
SJ, I saw Barkann’s interview with Buck, too. He said he calls every home run the same doesn’t matter if it’s Howard or Manny. What a freakin’ liar, I remember when he called Vic and Stairs’ HR’s, it was like, Oh yawn, a home run. What a pompous jerk!
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:46 pm
At least there was nobody on base.
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:46 pm
It’s nice to see a run from that inning, but Rollins and Howard both need to take more pitches and stop trying to force hits.
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:47 pm
Georgie, so I wasn’t the only one who saw that and thought how ridiculous it seemed.
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:48 pm
Hamels’ curveball just gets killed by lefties for some reason.
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:48 pm
Hamels has 53 pitches in 4 innings.
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:49 pm
buck is poop
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:49 pm
SJ, he is so full of himself. He’s so used to blowing smoke up people’s asses that he assumes everyone will just buy into his line of crap.
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:50 pm
Hamels has already shaken off that HR.
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:50 pm
I can’t listen to the guy. He really IS poop.
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:51 pm
Hamels is a STUD!!!
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:51 pm
everyone is going to have to deal with my late reactions…watching a delayed feed over the internet.
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:51 pm
That’s ok Jimbo. I just got here and I’m gonna be in and out.
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:53 pm
3-1 feels a bit uncomfortable to me. We need more runs.
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:54 pm
Buck has admitted in interviews before he doesn’t even really like baseball, he is a football guy, so he can kiss my fat white ass
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:56 pm
If I’m Burrell, I’m looking to pound a first pitch fastball. He’s let a couple by him already tonight.
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:57 pm
come on Pat, let’s get a hit dammit!
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:57 pm
The funny thing was that Buck said “I don’t really care who wins.”
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:57 pm
I guess he didn’t listen to your advice NEPA
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:58 pm
They do call him “Pat the Bat” right? I assume this is because he can hit?
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:58 pm
whats kazmir’s pitch count at?
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:00 pm
YES!
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:00 pm
In the words of Lenny Dkystra: “Whatever it takes, dude!”
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:00 pm
I love the occasional row of empty seats you see on the air. Nice work Rays fans.
Buck said just missed and it was 2 feet inside. Can we just call Buck “Massengil” from now on because he is a douche….
Nice play from Pena on that one
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:00 pm
Phew! Most important thing is Kazmir’s seeing his last inning for sure.
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:01 pm
at least the plate ump is consistent…Cole isn’t getting the inside strike either
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:01 pm
We have to make them pay for this. please.
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:02 pm
dammit shane! that could’ve been huge.
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:02 pm
well, we’re leaving a lot of people on base.
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:02 pm
Come on, Shane, no first-pitch swinging in that spot!
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:02 pm
Why is anyone swinging at first pitches from this guy? Christ on a Cracker…
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:02 pm
96 pitches for kazmir so far
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:02 pm
funny matty……i gave up on masengil and am listening to 1210…..
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:04 pm
Kazmir’s pitch count is 96 after 5 innings.
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:05 pm
MY XM is in the car, so I am basically stuck listening to ass and hole at this point…
Or I can put it on the radio and listen to Jon Miller and Joe Morgan talk about Barry Bonds…
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:05 pm
Buck said that play with Burrell was a tough play. How is that a tough play. If you are a major league baseball player you have to make that. What an ass.!!
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:06 pm
Hey NEPA, yes, I’m VERY tired of the Rocky theme from FOX. How about playing some cool Marah tunes instead? Or maybe some Philly soul? I love Rocky, but in this situation, it just shows FOX has no creativity whatsoever. Buck is a d-bag.
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:06 pm
It would be tough for him because it might require movement from his hair….
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:06 pm
I’m stuck with Joe and Dippy too. My XM is out in the car recording the game, to be put on the DVD in lieu of Buck and F*ck….
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:07 pm
Yea really Chuck, if that had been Hamels and Howard there’s no way he would have been making excuses for them
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:07 pm
If it was physically possible to have Cole Hamel’s baby, I would do it….
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:08 pm
Joe-focus, this is baseball. World Series. NFL is on Sunday.
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:09 pm
the nfl promos are annoying especially with no sound
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:09 pm
You know they could play some old Fresh Prince and DJ Jazzy Jeff tunes too….
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:09 pm
I think Kazmir pitches the whole 6th, unfortunately.
We could really use a Feliz hit to start the inning.
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:09 pm
At least Fox Baseball doesn’t have the dancing transforming football playing robot.
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:09 pm
Damn, Feliz is so solid at 3rd
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:10 pm
I continue to find Feliz’s beard creepy…
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:10 pm
Ever wonder if Joe Buck has ever just looked longingly into the eyes of Troy Aikman during those trips on the road….???
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:11 pm
Kazmir coming back out is a good thing, trust me on this…
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:11 pm
Hamels pitch count is??
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:11 pm
Cole was at 53 heading into this inning…..
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:12 pm
71
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:12 pm
Agreed Matty, Kazmir has been pretty wild tonight…I don’t see why we don’t want him to keep pitching
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:12 pm
Thanks Dave
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:12 pm
Hamels is at 72
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:12 pm
you can never have enough rocky. hell bring bill conti to the games and have him perform it after every inning!
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:13 pm
Love Kazmir staying in…..Cole needs to end this inning here
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:13 pm
“Game 1 is more important to the Phillies then the Rays.”
Uh, McCarver, it’s the World Series. Every game is important you nimrod.
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:13 pm
Dave, think Brokeback minus the tent….
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:13 pm
Free taco!!
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:14 pm
… Thats a lot of pitches this inning….
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:14 pm
Feliz looks like he could have been in the old Miami Vice show.
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:14 pm
Tons of pitches this inning
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:15 pm
damn. that’sa big hit.
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:15 pm
ugh
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:16 pm
ugh, come on Hamels
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:16 pm
damnit
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:16 pm
he is a good hitter he slaps it all over the field
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:16 pm
Iwamura looks like the last guy Van Damme had to fight in Bloodsport. All that’s missing is a Harley Davidson Bandana on Iwamura’s knee.
Good piece of hitting by Iwamura there, unfortunately…
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:17 pm
Upton is going to hurt us if we keep giving him baserunners to work with.
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:17 pm
Phils up 3-2. Man on 2nd. 2 outs. Can Cole get out of this inning?
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:18 pm
What are you the friggin narrator?
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:18 pm
I want that taco.
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:19 pm
nice catch Howard
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:19 pm
huge catch by howard there!
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:19 pm
Nice!!!!
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:19 pm
Beautiful!!!!!!
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:20 pm
He took it from a fan!!!!
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:21 pm
That was HUGE!!!!
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:21 pm
That was HUGE!!!!
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:21 pm
great play there.
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:21 pm
anybody know what that Tampa Bay scoring theme is?
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:21 pm
great catch howard! take it right out of the hands of those rays fans!
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:21 pm
Man what a play by Howard to end the inning.
Hamels has 83 pitches through 5 innings.
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:46 pm
Brian, I was not narrating, I was wondering what you people thought was going to happen.
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:47 pm
Howard is killing us right now…
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:48 pm
Nice to see the site is up and running again
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:48 pm
0 for 10 with RISP. i’m dying here….too close for comfort
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:49 pm
If we lose this game we won’t have to look far to understand why.
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:49 pm
I would just like to see Burrell and Howard stop swinging at pitches in the dirt and taking meatballs
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:49 pm
No, Howard and Burrell are killing us.
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:50 pm
BTW
Kazmir’s final pitch count is 110 pitches after 6 innings.
Hamels has 91 pitches after 6 innings.
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:51 pm
Damn, I might have rang up Burrell on that one.
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:51 pm
ok – bat is in victorino’s hands…
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:51 pm
come on Victorino
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:51 pm
Thank god Vic is up, he is the only one I trust right now. We need an insurance run badly….
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:52 pm
Ah, good to have it back. This didn’t work for a bit.
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:53 pm
Philly Fan from NY: can you pick up WPHT 1210 AM where you are? Unfortunately, in my part of Northern NJ, it’s pretty scratchy. Thus, I’m stuck listening to Joe Buck – that’s been the biggest downer of the playoffs so far. The guy is just anti-Phils all the way, doesn’t matter who the opponent is. Does anyone else agree with that???
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:53 pm
I’ve got that bad feeling….
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:53 pm
At least Howell is outta there. Some NASTY pitches,
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:54 pm
J.P. Howell had 19 pitches in 2/3 of an inning.
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:54 pm
Chuck – Balfour is nastier.
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:55 pm
@AC, welcome to the land of the phillies phans. Joe Buck hates us and our team.
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:56 pm
we are killing ourselves here with the lob’s
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:58 pm
In Manhattan you can’t get, you can sometimes get it in Queens.
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:58 pm
9 outs…. one run game.
October 22nd, 2008 at 10:58 pm
oh for the love of Christ….
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:02 pm
Anyone else having trouble with this site?
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:02 pm
Yeah I see that NEPA. Blew it right by Vic
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:03 pm
Lots of troubles with the site tonight.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:03 pm
Brian, I’ve been having trouble with it for an hour now.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:03 pm
That sang God bless america
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:05 pm
I have been having a lot of trouble with this site in the last hour.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:05 pm
i hate those damn cow bells…
will hamels come out to start the 8th??
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:05 pm
Good inning by Hamels. He should start the 8th.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:05 pm
SJ Mike – let’s get some runs finally this inning, maybe Hamels can sit then.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:06 pm
She did a nice job, the Backhole Boys could take a lesson from her.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:06 pm
outstanding start from hamels. two innings to go, just gotta take it one out at a time.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:06 pm
I think I’m gonna die no matter how this wind up – I haven’t been this nervous since my first kid was born!
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:06 pm
I’ve been pretty frustrated watching Kazmir pitch… He threw so many first pitch fastballs straight down the plate and we took them. Then we adjusted and got aggressive, but it was too late, Kazmir broke out the change up.
As for leaving baserunners on, that’s just terrible. It hurts to watch. We’ve been outplaying the Rays all night and haven’t even finished on nearly 100% of our opportunities.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:06 pm
So Madson, Romero, or Hamles to start the 8th?
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:06 pm
6 outs. 1 run lead. Too close for comfort.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:07 pm
I mean Hamels, god I can’t type to save my life
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:07 pm
They’re still swinging and missing at a lot of his stuff. I just trust Hamels more then I trust something else.
Then again, Madson would have an edge since he has a similar pitching style.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:08 pm
I remember that Bob Boone-Pete Rose play from 1980. I almost had a heart attack.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:08 pm
Madson it is then….
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:09 pm
Hamels has a 102 pitches through 7 innings. He is done.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:09 pm
so it seems hamels is done…man, i hope madson still has his mojo working
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:09 pm
insurance run would be very nice…..come on guys
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:10 pm
Not a good night for Coste…
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:10 pm
coste has gotta sit the rest of this series. that slump is too deep
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:11 pm
Jesus, Balfour has some really nasty stuff.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:11 pm
Great job by Hamels. If we win the game, he is player of the game.
I guess you could also consider Chutley.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:11 pm
the rays pitchers are very good. it’s going to be tough to get RISP in against them all series.
time for the bridge to lidge!
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:11 pm
lets go Madson
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:12 pm
here comes the 8th….my stomach is in knots already. nothing is ever easy.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:12 pm
Dobbs will be the DH tomorrow night.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:15 pm
Dobbs should have been the DH tonight. I hate when managers overdo it with the whole righty vs. lefty matchups and vice versa. Dobbs is a far superior hitter to Coste. I don’t care if he’s facing a lefty or a righty. Put in the best hitter for christ sakes.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:15 pm
5 outs to go…nice play Howard!
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:16 pm
I swear Madson’s velocity has gone up as the season got longer..
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:17 pm
Richie, I think you’re right.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:17 pm
Richie – it has. It’s actually a little down right now. Well it just hit 96, but its been up at 97 for awhile now.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:18 pm
Madson has been nasty as of late.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:19 pm
I can’t stand pesky little Asian baseball players. They’re so god damn frustrating.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:19 pm
this iwamura is a pest…
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:19 pm
I hope they have Dobbs at third tomorrow night and have Stairs in as the DH, to be honest with you…
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:20 pm
4 outs to go! just get upton…
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:20 pm
Feliz has had a productive night, and his glove has proved useful. I’d leave Feliz in, but use Dobbs for sure in the DH spot.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:20 pm
Matty, I disagree. I wouldn’t want to sacrifice defense there, especially with Tampa Bay’s speed on the basepaths.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:21 pm
Disagree Matty – I value Feliz’s defense more than Stair’s bat.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:21 pm
haha wow… Madson hit 97mph and that was a ball?!?
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:22 pm
The advantage with the DH is we can bat both Dobbs and have Feliz for defense. That’s a upper hand I wouldn’t want to give up.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:22 pm
This ump is killing me tonight….the strike zone changes very other inning….
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:22 pm
I agree NEPA….and Matty I hope Stairs is the DH…I think sometimes Dobbs is a better Pinch Hitter…but you may be right
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:22 pm
such bullshit – Madson should be sitting in the dugout right now. that was strike 3.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:23 pm
I agree with Phils2611.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:23 pm
Nepa, there’s your strike 3! 3 more outs to go!
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:23 pm
very nice. lidge time.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:23 pm
great job Madson, lets get some insurance runs!
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:23 pm
ryan madson baby!!!! nice k on upton
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:24 pm
Richie – There’s very little pinch hitter’s in AL games. I think there’s no doubt it should be Dobbs tomorrow.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:24 pm
3 more boys….Lets Go Phils
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:24 pm
You can still have Feliz as the defensive replacement though. I think we are going to need runs more than defense tomorrow night, just my opinion, but you all make good points. And people think Phils fans are difficult to deal with, lol.
Big K there.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:24 pm
Let’s get some insurance runs.
Top of the order.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:25 pm
i’m predicting a big inning… rays know it’s over having to face lidge, so they’ll be a little shaky. a few big hits, runners in scoring position finally brought it, etc.
i’ll say 7 – 2 at the end of top 9? heh heh.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:25 pm
NEPA – the whole night, the umpire’s strike zone has been VERY INCONSISTENT. by that i mean (especially in the first 4 innings) that the Rays were getting strikes called on the same pitches that were being called balls for the Phils. e.g., borderline at the knees, inside pitches. total rip job by Welke.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:25 pm
Madson is UNBELIEVABLE!!!
WE NEED RUNS!!!!
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:25 pm
Yes, but Matty, with a lot of right handed batters and Myers throwing fastballs, there are going to be a lot of pulled line shots in his direction. I’d want Feliz there for all of that.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:26 pm
Stairs has seen a lot of Shields this year, too. Don’t forget that….
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:27 pm
I think I would have pinch hit for Howard in his last at bat
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:27 pm
not a good night for Rollins,
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:27 pm
like seriously… could we swing at those fat pitches? rollins has done that twice now, looks at 2 beauts, then swings at the garbage. ugh, frustrating.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:27 pm
Ok, Feliz can start at third but I want Stairs Dh’ing. Good compromise everyone?
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:28 pm
hell, if the rays serve up this many fastballs tomorrow, we need stairs…
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:29 pm
nice hitting by werth!
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:29 pm
come on chase, another big hit here would be so clutch!
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:29 pm
nice double by Werth, get him home this time please.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:29 pm
my rally prediction is starting to take shape
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:29 pm
Maddon is leaving Balfour in too long, he may need him tomorrow…
Nice hit by Shaggy, I mean Werth, Zoinks!
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:29 pm
Great hit by Werth.
Haha, and no compromise Matty. I guess I’m just a huge Dobbs fan. I wished all season we could combine Dobbs bat with Feliz’s glove, and that’s basically what the DH allows you to do.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:30 pm
Boy, Werth has that great knack of slapping hits to right…He’s like a batting instruction video
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:30 pm
I hope to God that Howard finally makes them pay here
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:30 pm
Howard, 3 run shot. His drought ends now.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:30 pm
I’d feel better with Myers hitting instead of Howard….
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:30 pm
if we can get 1 run here against balfour, it would be so big.
even if we can keep him working (i think he’s up to 20 pitches now), maybe get him over 30, he may not be available tomorrow night!
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:30 pm
Oh hell, they are going to pitch to Howard? Yuck….
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:31 pm
haha, stairs for howard, he’ll hit another 2,000 ft. homer. send LA a souvenier
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:31 pm
oh well, no more balfour – but a fresh pitcher for Howard. TIME TO BREAK OUT OF IT BIG GUY!! Stage is yours…MVP time.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:31 pm
Howards gotta break out sometime ..why not now?
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:32 pm
NEPA I have a gut feeling that Stairs will hit Shields well tomorrow night, if he gets to play anyways…
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:32 pm
lets go Howard, he’s due for a big hit.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:32 pm
He has 27 pitches by the way.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:33 pm
If Howard stops swinging at pitches in the freaking dirt he should do well.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:34 pm
it’ll happen, i said 7 – 2 by end of 9th
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:34 pm
dammit howard! stop swinging at that junk
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:34 pm
oh come friggen on…
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:35 pm
nevermind, he watched ANOTHER fat ass pitch right down the middle, what the hell?!?!
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:35 pm
What a surprise – Howard doesn’t unleash on a strike right down the middle.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:35 pm
I’m looking for two tickets to the tampa game 2 tommorow. Huuuuuge longtime phills fan. If anyone has any tickets or know a great place to get some cheap – pleassse let me know
-Brian
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:35 pm
ugh Howard
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:36 pm
Pretty much exactly what I expected from Howard.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:36 pm
How the f*ck do you take those two pitches?!!!!!!!!!
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:36 pm
wow, i hate how howard argues a pitch right down the middle… seriously, stop sucking.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:36 pm
burrell’s gonna make em pay now!
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:36 pm
I don’t know what Howard was complaing about, both pitches were right down the middle. Sweet pitches that could’ve been driven.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:36 pm
I know Charlie would never do it…but play Dobbs for one game tomorrow at first base
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:36 pm
do we pinch hit for Brunlett?
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:36 pm
Burrell is out of the game. Bruntlett already pinch run in the 7th.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:37 pm
Brian, try Stubhub.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:37 pm
Gotta pinch hit Dobbs here and then put him in left.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:37 pm
Bruntlett*
maybe Stairs?
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:37 pm
Well, we can’t say we didn’t have good chances. The Rays have left so many pitches in our hot zones and we took all of them.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:38 pm
oo yea, use Dobbs
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:38 pm
Bruntlett, shoot me….
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:38 pm
good point Mike – forgot about that. pinch hit for bruntlett now, Maddon’s bringing in a righty pitcher – does he have anymore leftys, if we send up stairs or dobbs?
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:38 pm
Reason #395 why Ryan needs to step 4 inches closer to the plate.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:38 pm
or Brunlett will bat . . .
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:38 pm
bruntlett = no faith from me lol.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:39 pm
DOBBS????!!!!!
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:39 pm
ummmm….couldn’t they use Dobbs here and put Taguchi in left?
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:39 pm
Bruntlett’s gonna SO
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:39 pm
Has Dobbs played a single inning in left all year? You can’t let him start now.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:40 pm
Dobbs has playing time in left this year. Not a lot, but I’m almost positive he’s been out there.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:40 pm
Thanks phillyfanfromNY – I looked $175.. which aint bad at all.. i think i might jsut go with that. I’m goin to college in SouthCarolina.. it’s about a 8 hour drive.. but i think i might make it tommorow.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:40 pm
Yea, they could do that. I guess they either really like Bruntlett’s defense or want So’s bat in case of extra innings.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:41 pm
good steal call, still don’t expect production from bruntlett haha.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:41 pm
Bruntlett* can’t seem to remember the first ‘t’
a hit would be so huge
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:42 pm
sh*t!!
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:42 pm
Sweet God, here we go. Just need to get 3 outs, Lidge.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:42 pm
ok lidge, give us a heart attack, but let us win.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:42 pm
Well, its about that time to have a full on heart attack.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:42 pm
blah, whatever
Lidge time! Let’s go Lidge
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:42 pm
So’s bat for extras? If they are relying on him in Extras we are in trouble. This was piss poor managing by Cholly.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:42 pm
three outs to go.
BELIEVE IN BRAD
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:43 pm
In typical phils fashion we leave soooooo many guys on…….then we hope for the bullpen…come on Lidge baby
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:43 pm
Oh well, this is what we’ve got. C’mon Lidge.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:43 pm
this last 3 outs could be huge. imagine a walk off win to hand lidge his first loss the entire season…
that’d certainly hurt the morale of the team
i need to stop being so negative.
anyways, we got this. unlike bruntlett, i have full confidence and faith behind lidge and our defense behind him.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:44 pm
Get out the nitroglycerin
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:45 pm
You’re welcome, Brian.
3 outs. 1 run lead. Lights out Lidge coming in. Let’s hope he doesn’t blow it for the first time, now.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:45 pm
Phils26, be quiet for God’s sake!!
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:45 pm
Have faith fellas
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:46 pm
if what i said happens, i will /ban myself from this site.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:46 pm
No jinxing now please
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:46 pm
LOL Phils!!
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:47 pm
1 out!
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:47 pm
thats 1!!!
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:47 pm
great call. great pitch. 2 more!
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:47 pm
nice Lidge, 2 outs to go
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:47 pm
Awesome!
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:47 pm
finally, good call by the 3rd base ump…at least he’s consistent, unlike Welke
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:47 pm
Hey the third base ump finally nails a Ray!
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:47 pm
Lets go Lidge
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:48 pm
WOW good slider…keep it going
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:48 pm
The slider doesn’t seem to have as much movement as usual tonight. But it’s a lot more under control and tighter.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:48 pm
Phils2611, the nation will personally hunt you down, don’t even say stuff like that!
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:48 pm
Thanks Buck for bringing up the GD all-star game…
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:48 pm
put the woman and children to bed
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:48 pm

October 22nd, 2008 at 11:49 pm

October 22nd, 2008 at 11:49 pm
awesome Lidge, 1 out to go!
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:49 pm
evan or eva longoria??? i couldn’t tell…
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:49 pm
1 more, please 1 more!!!
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:49 pm
2 outs!!!!!! 1 to go!!!!!
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:49 pm
1 more…..PLEASE….I sure picked the wrong day to quit smoking
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:49 pm
At this point Eva is less famous…
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:49 pm
Lidge is a dragon tonight…. rookies are overmatched so far
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:50 pm
Thats good keep it light Phils26
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:50 pm
georgie, lesson learned. haha. only positive from now on.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:50 pm
I am having a cigarette if Lidge finishes this…
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:51 pm
here it is, c’mon!
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:51 pm
dammit – im dying here….
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:52 pm
Maybe I should the light cigarette now and start burning my arm with it, it would feel better than watching this at-bat
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:52 pm
WHOOO! GAME 1 IS OURS!!!!
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:52 pm
YESSSSS!
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:52 pm
YES! WOW!
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:52 pm
and the Phillies win!
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:52 pm
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:52 pm
YYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:52 pm
YES..now what was so hard about that?
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:53 pm
haha, i totally called a 3 – 2 win on these forums tonight… not quite like that, but i had the score right.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:53 pm
thank you FELIZ!!! that’s why you have him in there, for the defense!
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:53 pm
I was right – I’m gonna die now.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:53 pm
1 down
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:53 pm
HOLY SH*T!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:53 pm
We freaking stole that one! No way we should have that one, but we did, awesome, let’s get number 2 tomorrow night!
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:53 pm
1 Win down!!!!!! 3 to go!!!!!!!
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:54 pm
Matty we TOTALLY stole that. This is HUGE!!!!!
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:54 pm
Matty we get em any way we can…tomorrow is the next one for sure.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:55 pm
My spine is freaking tingling like a mutha
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:55 pm
i wouldn’t say we STOLE it…
we certainly didn’t pound them like we should have. but give credit where credit is due, hamels / madson / lidge did their job.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:55 pm
…. Its been a long time since Schilling’s 5-hit gem to force a game six…..
That felt good.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:55 pm
Awesome win! Goodnight everyone!
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:55 pm
Friends, congratulations. 3 more.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:55 pm
Our pitching did exactly what we expect them to do. Not tight at all tonight. Hopefully with the one game lead our offense will loosen up with guys in scoring position.
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:56 pm
THAT’S HOW YOU START A SERIES!
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:56 pm
True, Phils26 BUT……the bats HAVE to be there tomorrow
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:56 pm
Night all, 6 am awaits… ugh.
Tomorrow night, we take game 2! lets go 2 – 0 back to philly!
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:56 pm
Good night SJ Mike and thank you to Chase Utley.
Boo?
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:57 pm
Lidge was amazing tonight. Whyn the hell can’t he do that more opften
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:58 pm
Yeah bed for me too If I can sleep
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:58 pm
Who ever thought we’d be in this position in June…..Enjoy it everybody..Good Night and cant wait till tomorrow
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:58 pm
ONE DOWN BABY!
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:59 pm
LET’S GO PHILLIES!
They drove me crazy by stranding billions of runners, but they won. What more can you ask for?
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:59 pm
bring it back 2-0 to Philly, and there is a REAL good shot that the title can be claimed at Citizens Bank Park – that would be the most awesome thing of all!!!
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:59 pm
Up to bed to watch postgame live on csn, hopefully I’ll be able to sleep.
October 23rd, 2008 at 12:01 am
I never said stealing it was bad, lol….
Must say the Phils pitching seemed to handle the lay-off well…
We need Brett Myers to tell the Rays “Boom, Outta Here” tomorrow night…
October 23rd, 2008 at 12:01 am
Feels something special doesn’t it!
October 23rd, 2008 at 12:12 am
It’s great to take game 1…We need the offense to show up though because we can’t expect Myers,Moyer, and Blanton to only give 2 runs…Now we gotta face Shields tomorrow (yikes).

Oh no, Jimmy, what are you swinging out. No worry, it’s only one out but he repeated himself enough that I thought I was watching another bad commercial on TV. Good Werth, cleaned and shaven for his debut for the world to see. A crucial man on base for Utley’s blast which granted us a view of a Philly crossing home. Life is good. Two runs in and the cow bells never got a chance to ring loud enough to bring their herd a win. There was the circus barker standing at the plate with the sleek black uniform protected with heavy padded chest. Yelling to the players ‘Step up, Step up; Hear all about it; It’s the show of century; Come one come all, and be part of it if you can”. “If you can”, lingered on the thoughts of the stranded Phillies on second and third. The Phillies became so frequent on the bases throughout the night into Thursday morning that the Devil Ray players were becoming more than acquaintances of the red hat enemies. Maybe the Rays became too benign as the Phil often ran from first to second or second to third. Yes the bases were populated only to see the well run dry trying to work their way home. If only it was easy enough to stand on third and click your baseball shoes together three times and say that magic phrase. No, the Phillies just didn’t want a soft cushy lead. But it was an exciting pitching duel by Cole Hamels who again showed that we have another Robin Roberts or Steve Carlton. Watch and rejoice with each pitch throughout his career because pitchers like him just don’t come by that often. He mixed his pitches with clever points of interest. Landing the ball on his designated target inside and around the edges of the box. Next, to come along were Ryan Madson and Brad Lidge. I believe they are first place contenders for the award of “the most boring relief pitchers” to offensive minded opposing baseball fans. The third base umpire called last out, and the Phillies took one step forward with a splendid pitching performance.
