   I don’t think it is a huge surprise here. I mean, Manny is the only one who could significantly contribute on a daily basis.

   One name that is on the trade market is Delmon Young. He spent last year with the Twins after being traded for Matt Garza. He isn’t exactly liking Minnesota or playing in a garbage bagged laced dome. He is has youth and a ton of potential on his side. The drawback is his atttitude. However, put him in with our veteran and champion clubhouse and I am sure the vets will teach him how to act.

   He is a younger version of Milton Bradley- he hasn’t quite put up numbers like Bradley but you can try to reign in his attitude a bit whereas Bradley has proven he won’t listen to anyone at this point in his career.

   Not sure what it would take- maybe Kendrick and/or Happ plus a young position player. I think it is worth Amaro to explore this one.

   Too old? How about 16 game winner in ‘08, Jamie Moyer?

   A lot of people said he was too old ALL season! Even when he had two rough starts in the World Series, I STILL heard people using his age as an excuse.

   While I believe that age does play a minor role in overall performance, signing a player should be based on overall injury history/health and training/motivation to keep their body in check.

   I just can’t believe that you could potentially use the argument of “too old” to NOT sign Manny.

   Personally, I would LOVE to see Manny in Philly but, it will never happen.

   I read Rosenthal’s report mentioning Young today and it’s definitely intriguing. The one concern highlighted by Rosenthal is that the Twins are probably going to want a relatively large return for Young given that they traded away Garza and Bartlett to get him. I wouldn’t want to gut the farm for Young, but it’s an interesting thought. Hopefully Amaro has at least talked to the Twins to see what it would take.

   I just read that to on mlbtraderumors. I doubt he would want to play here. He’s a fly ball/strikeout pitcher. I’d love 2 see him here but for some reason I highly doubt he would even consider pitching here

   Delmon Young solves none of our problems. He’s another speedy outfielder with minimal pop… he hit 10 HR last year and 13 the year before that (not mind blowing numbers by any means). And he has an attitude problem, to boot. The Twins have a logjam in the OF and they want someone to take Young and his attitude off their hands and they’re going to be asking a lot because they overpaid. Doesn’t sound like a good situation, to me. They know that they can live with Span, Gomez and Kubel… so unless they want to throw in a young SP, I’m not eager to help them.

   amaro stinks. hes a weasel. anyone that acts arrogant and unappreciative during interviews that hometown fans will see isn’t fit to have his position. of course there’s the aspect of secrecy that must be kept regarding trades/signing/etc, but you don’t have to smell you own farts in public to get that stuff done. I haven’t seen a single appearance by him that makes me trust him. gillick formed a few great relationships with other organizations, i just don’t see amaro doing the same. will he sign anyone outside phils org this year? highly doubt it, but i hope im wrong.

   Manny is the only older player I would want.

   Burennett also has some health issues that would keep the phillies away

    I’m sorry, but I don’t think signing anyone like Nick Punto, or anyone for that matter to play 2B, should even be any concern right now. It’s not like Utley is going to be out that long..He might even be ready for opening day! If worse comes to worse, we have backup situations. Either Donald, or Bruntlet (1 month wouldn’t hurt). We better just concentrate on SP, and LF position, and save ourself that extra few dollars.

    I’d much rather sign Sheets than Burnett. Sheets’ injury problems appear to be less chronic than Burnett’s, and all indications are that Sheets’ price will be lower in terms of both years and dollars. Plus, Sheets is a better pitcher than Burnett IMO. Burnett almost never pitches more than 200 innings a year; it would be insane to ink a guy like that to a 5-year deal at 16-18MM per.

    To clarify, I don’t think we’ll actually sign either, but if the Phils are looking to sign another SP, Sheets is the guy I’d want over Burnett. Actually, if we take CC out of the equation, Sheets is probably second only to Lowe in terms of who I’d like the Phils to sign as a starting pitcher.

    maxhole, I tend to agree with what you said about Amaro. I’ve never liked his attitude, arrogant, as you said, and I aways get the feeling he resents today’s players for the money they make. He looks like the kid that doesn’t play well with others.

    Reports on ESPN today said the Orioles are looking at Burnett, and the Angels are trying to work a deal for Sabathia.

    i’m confused by the sore thumb comment, why does ibanez stick out? has amaro officially stated that he’s interested in him before? if not i’m glad to hear the comment, because i don’t want anything to do with any of those 36 year old free agents, especially ibanez.

    Sheets would be a great guy to bid on, his stock (and price) dropped massively but I’m sure Amaro and the FO are doing their work on him. As for Delmon Young are you kidding me! The guys Barry Bonds with only a slice of the talent, we want players who want to win here because they’ll work for it not ones who think it’s owed (Ryan Howard cough cough).

    Garret Anderson’s a terrible fit here though, not because of his age but his expectation. When your a 36 year old free agent and you sign with Scott Boras sending a message saying your not legacy shopping but you think you should get paid. The baffling thing here is Boras isn’t going to get him anything more than he couldn’t have found with anyone else, he’s not going to get a deal to Boras’s magic 42 number and he’ll be in the same boat as any other once great player when the contracts up if he plays on. Cannot understand why he wouldn’t want to re-sign with the Angels and lock-up his legacy there than chance his arm with a lesser team for a couple more bucks.

    I’m a little surprised by all the hate for Young – yes, he only had 10 HR last year, but he’s still very young (23) and projects to have plus power to all fields. Add in that he hits for good average and he seems like a reasonably attractive piece to add. The largest minuses are his mediocre plate discipline and the “bad attitude,” though I think both can be fixed and the latter especially in the environment of the Phils’ clubhouse. At any rate, I’d rather have Young than Milton Bradley (who most here seem to love), whose attitude is at least as bad and who is a significant injury risk to boot.

    The main reason I’d hesitate to go after Young is the price he’d cost in terms of prospects, especially since we have Brown and Taylor (and even Mayberry, depending on how his development goes) in the wings.

    Pete I love your enthusiasm but bad attitude can’t be fixed by anything, the blinders go up and everyone looks in the other direction till it rears its head again. The only bad attitude players that win are those who get lucky or have such incredible talent you grin a bear it for as long as you can, Young could be a very good player but he’s not the next Barry Bonds. Your right he’ll probably reach some impressive numbers but that’s all he’s playing for and he’s always one bad hairday away from wha could be a lengthy suspension. What about the days he’s not locked in, or contract time or what happens if he has to rehab from a severe injury? There’s a reason you enjoy looking back on guys like Albert Belle but are thankful they never played for your team, everything suggests Young’s cut for the same cloth and your talking a bounty to land him.

    He can survive in a small market on a team like the Twins who do their business pretty well dealing with egos but on a big market team your creating a potential monster.

    I like Anderson, but not as much as Ibanez. Anderson played 145 games last year, but some time at DH, which padded his stats a bit, while Ibanez played a legitimate 162 last season. They both his .293 last year, but Ibanez had more hr, hits, runs, rbis and a higher obp. I like the fact that Anderson only struck out 77 times compared to 130 for Ibanez, but I think Ibanez has a little more to offer at this point in his career.

    If Ibanez is too pricey(all indications say 8-11 mil a year), I wouldn’t mind seeing the Phils sign Anderson. If he could give us 110-120 games in LF, I could live with a Jenkins, Bruntlett, Dobbs platoon for the other 52-62 games.

    As far as the rest of the guys go, it looks like the wheels are coming off of Alou, Floyd, Gonzalez and Edmonds. Griffey can still hit the longball, but at this point may only be able to give us half a season at his best. Greg Norton is a career pinch hitter, so he offers us nothing really, and So Taguchi . . . haha – enough said.

    The more people bring up guys like Anderson, Ibanez, Griffey, Bradley, etc. the more sense it seems to make to sign Burrell to a 2- or 3-year deal at $13MM per. I’d have to think that gets it done, and if Ibanez is really looking for something at $10MM or above I can’t see how his 37-year-old left-handed bat is really worth saving the $3 mil and replacing Pat.

    Pete, Ibanez may be 36, but he has better legs than Burrell did at 25, and that is more of an indictment of Burrell, than praising Ibanez. He has been far more productive than Burrell over the last 3 years, and for his career at that. If you don’t believe me on that, then go compare their stats(I suggest baseball-reference.com). He doesn’t take months off at a time, and replacing Burrell with Ibanez would cut down strikeouts in the second half of the lineup, and add range to the outfield defense. Saving 3 million per year might make the difference in locking up one of our cornerstone players for years to come. Also, we could bat Werth 5th, and Ibanez 6th, and we would break up those righties at the back end of the lineup. The more I think about signing Ibanez, the more I like the idea. He would be relatively cheap, and could improve an already world championship caliber team.

    Bradley has also been productive, but I could see the Phillies passing on him because of injury and character issues. Plus I think some team will give him 4-5 years in a deal, and I wouldn’t go past 3.

    I’d sign Anderson, but only for no more than 6-8 million a year, and only as a last option. He could probably give us a solid 110-120 games per year, and would be an improvement to Geoff Jenkins. I’d look to make trade for an outfielder before going towards Anderson.

    I wouldn’t take Griffey, because I think he could only give us half a season. He’s a hall of famer, and a great guy in the community, but he is DONE.

    pete you got it right. burrell looks better by the minute. when it comes down to it i see him even taking less to stay here, not much less but he doesn’t seem to be the type of player with money constantly on the mind. have i missed any info on jermaine dye? ive seen mention of his no trade clause for east coast teams, but cant find which teams are on it. the guy put up better numbers than burrell in every category this year, and he can steal a base. yet his name isnt being thrown around at all. no manny, no maglio, no ibanez.

    Everyone is waiting for CC and Big Tex to sign. Once they sign with their new or old teams the market will be set and a flurry of actvity will be unleashed. Tex’s contract will set the Manny parameters who will then set the market for Burrell, Ibanez, et al.

    maxhole, at least someone is finally argeeing with me on here, that Manny and Bradley have the worse attitudes in the Majors, Raul Ibanez and Maggilo Orndonez feast on American League itchers who are overworked to the point of wet noodles, and taking them deep into the bleechers, Burrell will probably take less money for three years, Jermaine Dye has a no trade clause to teams in the Northeast, he probably will end up in Cinny cause they believe he doesn’t have a no trade clause to them.

    So Pat Burrell gets his three years for maybe a little less money, especially since there is no true equal on the open market, so all of you Pat the Bat Bashers stick that in you’re pipes and smoke it.

    Burrell for three year is nuts. I was watching him on replay on the double he hit in the last game. Ricky batalico was laughing . when the announcer said he might have got a triple if he started to run right away. Ricky said that is the fastest he can go and it was terrible. I like pat but he is not a everyday leftfielder anymore, We wouldn’t be having this convsation if the front office scouted better and had someone ready to at least platoon right now. but they haven’t gotten a outfielder who is near ready.

    pat is not an everyday left fielder? is that a joke? 33 hrs and 86 rbis doesn’t qualify you to play everyday? four straight seasons of 29+ hrs and 86+ rbis? get the hell out of here. yes he’s slow, he’s a power hitter, his speed doesn’t really matter to me. if we’re going to talk defense, ibanez is worse in the field than burrell is. i’ll gladly, gladly take pat the bat for 3 more years.

    burrell takes the abreau approach quite well. who cares as long as you keep the ball in front of you. it seemed burrell’s replacements made mistakes more frequently than he (taguchi dropped a ball out of his mit, was that in Houston? he screwed up several other times, golson kicked a ball between his legs and cost extra bases as well late in the season) how many times did burrell come up with a clutch hit after the sixth inning this year? i think i can remember about three walk-off homers. and his shining moment where he COULD HAVE MADE IT TO THIRD IF HE RAN HARD OUT OF THE BOX, id laugh at that statement too. but it won the phuckin game didnt it? there is no reasonable suitor for pat’s spot right now. give him his legacy, this team doesnt have too many of those types of players to begin with.
