Give Hamels A Longterm Contract

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Wed, November 05, 2008 01:47 PM

Last offseason, Cole Hamels expressed disappointment that he wasn’t reaping larger benefits monteraily. He said:

“I felt like it wasn’t necessarily equal compensation for what I do and for what I can do.”

At the time I wrote that Hamels needed to prove himself over a full season — without injury — to earn his buck.

He’s earned his buck.

Hamels threw more than 220 innings in the 2008 regular season, then another 35 in the postseason. Add in 30 or so exhibition innings during Spring Training, and Hamels threw close to 300 innings in 2008. With no injury.

That alone would be enough for Hamels to merit a longterm contract. His performance — both in the regular season and in the postseason — is merely icing on the fat, green cake Hamels should be eating soon. He ripped off one of the greatest postseason pitching performances ever, winning four of his five games and both the NLCS and World Series MVP awards. The 24-year-old deserves a raise.

How much? I’d like the Phils to go six years on Hamels, maybe at the overall price of $90M in an escalation deal. Throw in a 2015 option for $20M, and that would suffice for a man who is — debatably — the best pitcher in baseball.

PLEASE GOD LOCK HIM UP LONGTERM and i PRAY that another star doesn’t leave Philly in their prime and go on to Dominate Somewhere else

  2. Phil Says:

Hamels should get a 7 year $100 million contract with an option for an 8th at $20 million. Make him the new face of the franchise. Franchise pitcher is just what we need. We’ll have him locked up until he is 32 and he will still be able to hit free agency and get even more money by that point if he stays healthy. Hamels is going to have a great hall of fame career barring injuries. I’d love to see him stay in red pin stripes for his whole career.

  3. Rick Says:

I think 6/90 would be a fair deal. I asked yesterday in another post about 5/75, but actually if they’re going to try to lock him up for $15mil/year a sixth year would probably be required.

I think right now is an ideal opportunity for the Phils to sign him to a cheaper and longer deal that would be more incentive loaded since everything seems immediately attainable after winning the WS. What do you guys think?

However, lets face it, is there anyone right now that doesn’t believe Cole Hamels will win 20 games next year!?!? He could even turn down 15mil/year for six years at this point.

If they can’t lock him up, what do they offer for arbitration? $8million?

  4. Phil Says:

Apparently the Phillies are looking to talk long term extensions with Howard. I don’t know if I like that or not…

I know this isn’t the place for politics, but GO OBAMA! Obama/Phillies 08!

This has to be one of the best weeks in Philadelphia history.

  5. mikemike Says:

5 million in arbitration is about right. I would offer him 5 this year then two years of 8, and three years of 10,12 14,18 million option year total of 6 yr.guaranteed with a 7th yr. option

  6. Rick Says:

You’re right Phil. It isn’t the place for politics.

  7. Phil Says:

Oh no, did I offend you by saying I was happy over the Phillies and Obama winning? Did I offend you because I said this is a great week to be a Philadelphian? The Phillies must not play in Philly?

  8. erik Says:

no phil, anyone with half a brain knows that obama is a joke. that is what upset rick i am sure

  9. Tim Malcolm Says:

Just shut down the political talk. I don’t want the boards flooded with discourse/arguing about things other than baseball.

  10. Phil Says:

And how is Obama a joke? Because he actually wants to change this country? Is it because he’s black? I’m sure it’s cause he’s black. Let’s kick Jimmy and Ryan off the team, they’re black. Sorry for getting excited over something that is even bigger than baseball. The future of this country is even more exciting than the Phillies, sorry to say.

  11. Rick Says:

Phil – I’m not offended at all! I never said I was offended.

I don’t see how you relate my statement to thinking it’s not a great week in Philly. I agree it is a great week for the Phillies and therefore Philadelphia!

This isn’t a political blog, it’s a Phillies blog. There is no reason to talk about politics. You even said it yourself, “I know this isn’t the place for politics, …”. So lets keep it to baseball?

  12. Chutley Says:

Yeah Phil we’re all racist. you got it. 6 years $90 million 7th year opt. with incentives, say if, you know, he wins the World Series MVP again.

  13. timb Says:

    Phil, you’re an ass.

  14. boxage Says:

I fail to see how anything could be more exciting than the Phillies.

  15. Chuck Says:

Wow….it’s kind of heated in here.

Phil…..I agree…..great week to be a Philadelphian. Actually, I’m MORE exited about the Phillies winning the World Series than I am about the election……and the election came out just for me.

Observation: Last night one of the networks was making a BIG DEAL about the crowd assembled in Chicago to see Obama. Some thing like a half million they said. I laughed at that given the 1.5-2 million we had for the parade/celebration on Friday. GO PHILLIES!!!!! WORLD F’n CHAMPIONS!!!!!!

  16. Tim Malcolm Says:

I fail to see how anything could be more exciting than boxage.

    But that’s me.

Seriously, Phil, calm down. And no more political talk.

  17. Manny Says:

I’m sorry, too, but just like I said PHILLIES WORLD F***ING CHAMPIONS in every single forum I participate in, I’m gonna say here loud and clear: OBAMA 2008! The image of the U.S. has improved dramatically overnight! This is truly historic…

As for Hamels, I want him to pitch till he’s Jamie Moyer’s age if possible… But this being his only season where he’s been 100% injury-free, I think 90/6 is too much. Maybe 78/6? In any case, at least we aim for 5 years.

  18. Todd Says:

what is santana making? 7 years for $140 or so? He has a longer history of winning and staying healthy than Hamels does, but I would suspect Hamels would get something just under that. 6 years for close to 100 sounds to me what he’ll be looking for. Pay the man, pay him now.

  19. Chuck Says:

Manny…..78…..90….c’mon…… now we’re nickeling and diming the man. Just pay him and pay him now. The likes of him aren’t going to come along again in a long, long while. THIS, above all else, needs to be THE priority.

  20. Chutley Says:

Hamels had a great season but doesnt have Santana’s past and we’re not the dumbass Mutts. i don’t think he’ll come anwhere cloe to 7/140, 6/95 at the most. We still gotta save some money

  21. Pete Says:

Pay Hamels 6/100 and get it over with.

  22. mamallama Says:

Please, God, no more flaming. Obama got elected and we can’t change that. However, we *can* lock Hamels up and we damn well better do so. Without quality pitching, no team can go anywhere, and he’s the linchpin of the staff. Give the man anything he wants, so we can get what *we* want–Wins!

  23. From Section 113 Says:

    Hamels:

    ‘09: $6
    ‘10: $9
    ‘11: $12.5
    ‘12: $16
    ‘13: $18
    ‘14: $18
    ‘15: $22 (option $5 Buy Out)

Plus a signing bonus for $5.5 which guarantees him $90 Million.

We might be able to get him for less in ‘13-’14 if they give him more in ‘09-’11.
    He’s definately worth it.

  24. SJ Mike Says:

Amaro was on Daily News Live and he said that Hamels is not one of his “top prioritities.” He cited arbitration years, controlling their contract still, etc. as his reasons.

  25. Georgie Says:

I saw that SJ, he said “Cole is under our control for several years”, there was something about Amaro’s attitude I just didn’t like. I’ve never been a big fan of his though, so maybe I’m just reading something into it, but it sounded like they might try to lowball Cole, which would be a BIG mistake.

  26. SJ Mike Says:

Georgie, I got the very same impression from Amaro’s tone also.

He seems to be going into arbitration control players with the attitude of “They’re our’s regardless, so we can do whatever we want, so suck it!”

Well, not as harsh as that, but you get the idea.

  27. Manny Says:

    Oh no, that sounds bad!

  28. Georgie Says:

haha, Cole and his wife were in the audience on “Dancing With the Stars” tonight.

  29. KM Says:

6 years 100 million sounds fair to me. If they wait any longer to lock him up, they will be looking at 20+million per season, which basically means they will trade him.

  30. Cobob22 Says:

Make him happy. He strikes me as someone who will play better when happy. Phillies played with him last year, he may get fed up if they keep jerking him around. Tie him up long term, he proved himself this season…..and post season!
