Quick Free Agency Deadline Primer

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Fri, November 14, 2008 11:37 AM

As free agent filings occur today, let’s look at what the Phillies need this offseason:

Strongest Need: Starting Pitcher
Though the Phillies have up to eight options for their Opening Day rotation, one of the options is a free agent, and four aren’t quite set in stone. A starter that can fill one of the middle spots would be extremely welcome. If not, a veteran filler piece wouldn’t be a bad idea.
Consider: Ben Sheets, Jon Garland, Paul Byrd, Odalis Perez

Strong Need: Right-handed hitting left fielder
Pat Burrell might get scooped by another team. If so, it leaves a hole that the Phils can patch in a few ways. The internal option is going with a platoon of left-handed hitters, but that means the Phils still lack a powerful right-handed bat. Look for the Phils to do something, whether it’s signing a cheap platoon option, or trading for an expensive everyday guy.
Consider: Milton Bradley, Jermaine Dye, Rocco Baldelli, Juan Rivera

Strong Need: Right-handed Reliever
The Phillies bullpen was unstoppable for most of 2008, but with Rudy Seanez leaving and the potential for a couple drop-offs, getting a right-hander who can work middle and late innings might be crucial. A veteran might be in the cards.
Consider: Doug Brocail, Russ Springer

Moderate Need: Right-handed-hitting outfielder
The Phils might still need a bench-worthy right-handed hitter, as the group is already heavy to the left. That means a Baldelli might still be in the cards. Or the Phils can go the utility route. But this isn’t a strong necessity.
Consider: Baldelli, Rivera, Emil Brown, Jerry Hairston Jr.

Low Need: Backup First Baseman
Greg Dobbs and Chris Coste can back Ryan Howard, but who knows if Coste gets a 25-man job, and if Dobbs won’t be in the outfield. Moreover, having a right-handed bat in place of Howard might be vital in 2009.
Consider: Richie Sexson, Miguel Cairo

Low Need: Backup Catcher
It doesn’t make too much sense for the Phils to add a veteran catcher, but you never know. They might want a solid transition piece from Carlos Ruiz to Lou Marson without needing Coste behind the dish.
Consider: Josh Bard, Chad Moeller, David Ross

  1. Justin Says:

I would be pretty happy to see the Phils sign Bradley, Brocail, and Hairston/Orr. Hairston and Orr are both guys who can be utility fielders for infield or outfield, both have as good or better bats than Bruntlett so that’d be a good thing. Wouldn’t be surprised to see the Phils make a run at David Ross either since they showed interest when he was waived.

  2. GM-Carson Says:

If Moyer is signed the rotation is almost good to go (Hamels, Myers, Moyer, Blanton, Carrasco/Happ/Kendrick). Sure, I’d like to see Sheets slotted #2, bumping everyone back a spot, but I have zero faith that will happen. I’m more concerned about the outfield. Relying on Dobbs/Jenkins/Stairs (all lefties) to fill Burrell’s voids scares the poop outta me. Baldelli is intriguing, but he’s also highly unpredictable and Hairston’s season was likely a fluke.

  3. From Section 113 Says:

If it’s between Brocail and th 39/40 year old Springer, I would go with Springer. He gets more strikeouts, and though he’s more of a fly ball pitcher than Brocail, he’s has a better track record of success.

  4. Greg B Says:

Bradley does seem like a pretty reasonable fit. I’d like to give Happ a chance and we should re-sign Moyer.

  5. phinally Says:

forget about baldelli. The guy has a disease, he can’t be an everyday player.

  6. Gavin Says:

Brocail would be a great signing. He had Durbin type #’s last year. I think that would finish off the pen. Moyer is #1 priority and after that, I really would rather re-sign Burrell. No other options out there appeal to me. 3 years 33 mill/ club option for a 4th year I think would get it done.

  7. Chutley Says:

i’d love to see how Happ or Kendrik pan out but we can’t afford to wait til midseason again

  8. From Section 113 Says:

I like Springer. Brocail just never impresse dme. Especially in Houston. What about a guy like Jason Isringhausen on a minor league deal? Or at least an invite to spring trainning? I think he still has some bullets left in that arm.

  9. Kevin Says:

Forget about Baldelli’s disease. He is not an every day play but he can be one hell of a bench player. If we scooped him up, you could use him,Jenkins and Brunnlet in left.

  10. Jim Says:

It would be too classic a move for the Phillies to bring in Paul Byrd. Sure hes a good pitcher, and a cheap option, but we have better options and we can actually afford to spend money this time around.

  11. NJ Says:

I don’t know if the Phillies get a bonifide 5th starter like Byrd, as with Durbin last year I think Tim’s on the money predicting a guy like Odalis Perez for insurance with JA Happ slotted in to start the season in the rotation.

Just watched an ESPN segment with good ol’ buster who talked a little about how economics might affect free agency, he said after the first wave a lot of GM’s will wait till January expecting their non high profile targets be still be there at a reduced cost.

  12. Georgie Says:

NJ, I heard something along those lines too, that the GM’s were told to keep in mind the state of the economy when offering FA’s contracts. Then someone made the comment that the Yankees are sure to listen to that advice.

  13. mikemike Says:

Jim According to Anthony Gargano on wip radio the phillies are tap out with the raises. He says thet are at 141 million without a starter and left fielder, can’t figure it out. so they will resign moyer and get a cheap second tier left fielder. can’t afford bradley, My number have the phillies at 121 with raises. and arb cases settled, if hamels get more than 5 million a little higher.

  14. Greg B Says:

This talk of Jenkins as our “right-handed power bat” is scaring the hell out of me. Either sign Burrell or Bradley. We need one of them.

  15. NJ Says:

More than any off-season this is the one where you sit back and just hope the wind blows a nice breeze and you don’t get caught by hurricane Minaya.

  16. Georgie Says:

mike mike, how can they be at 141M before a LF’r and pitcher, are they counting Pat’s salary into that or something, that sounds way too high!

  17. Maverick Says:

141 can not be right. Anyone here good at math?

  18. Dan Says:

Would love Baldelli as a bench player. For the right price of course.

  19. griffin Says:

Orr re-signed with the Nats, so he’s no longer an option.

I would like Bradley in LF and I think Juan Cruz (formerly of Arizona) is a real good set-up man but he may cost too much. Brocail and Springer are more realistic options. As for a SP, I wouldn’t mind taking a shot on Brad Penny for a year.

  20. griffin Says:

Just read a chat from Keith Law of ESPN. Here’s an interesting tidbit.

AB (CT): Who has more trade value for their current team, Dye or Magglio? Could a package of J Donald and JA Happ be a realistic starting point for either (with PHI paying full contract)

Keith Law: (1:58 PM ET ) Dye has more trade value. AL teams are going to look at Happ as a 5/6 starter, tops. He doesn’t have much value. Donald’s an everyday SS for someone, though – he’s a very valuable trade piece.

  21. mikemike Says:

    Howard 15 ,Myers 12, Eaton 8, ULtey 11, Rollins 7.5,Lidge 11, Jenkins 8, Eyre 2 Blanton 5, felix 5, romano 4, Werth 5, Victorino 4, Madson 3, hamels 5-6,ruiz 1, condrey 1, coste .8, Dobbs 1.5, Moyer 8, Brunlett 1, Happ .5 , Durbin 1.5, that is 114 million with raises and three openings. No way we spend 27 million for a relief pitcher and a left fielder.

  22. KM Says:

I think we should let Werth bat 5th and go out and get a left handed hitting outfielder to hit at the back of the lineup and break up those righties.

  23. 08ChampsWetboy69 Says:

WE NEED SABATHIA #1 we need starting pitching it would be awesome tog et Sabathia but we don’t have th $$$$ the Skankees have. Sheets would be a good fit. Also we need a right handed left fielder. Jermaine Dye, Baldelli, Bradley they are all good.
