We Can’t Be Critical Of Amaro Yet
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Mon, November 03, 2008 11:31 AM
Bill Conlin defends Ruben Amaro Jr. as new Phillies GM. Yes, really. He says:
What part of his background fails to impress you? Too close to the organization? Too educated for a baseball man? Not enough hands-on experience? What?
No, what I’m hearing in the early outrage over word that fellow assistant GM Mike Arbuckle has resigned, is that if Dave Montgomery sneezes, Ruben will be there with a tissue to say “gesundheit” in three languages.
I’m not critical of Amaro, like most people may be. Really, we haven’t seen Amaro’s real work yet, as it’s been mixed with the work of Pat Gillick, Ed Wade and Mike Arbuckle. Amaro’s been a “yes man”? Of course he has. He was trying to become general manager when the others fell off. He’s a smart guy.
The jury will be out on Amaro until the pudding is well formed. Just as the jury was out on Gillick until, oh, Wednesday.

We will have some good tests of Amaro’s abilities early in his tenure as Burrell, Howard, Hamels, and Victorino all have contract issues to deal with.

I am a bit upset over hearing Arbuckle leaving but you have to move forward. It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out.

Did anyone see Eskin on NBC 10 last night? Eskin said that some time prior to Manny deal the Dodgers and Phillies had a trade worked out involving Ryan Howard but the Dodgers backed out at the last minute.
We would’ve got James Looney amoung others.
I’m not fan of Eskin’s but he does usually have a lot ligit sources

Well the only thing we really worry about is that Amaro is the next Ed Wade,i just hope he’s learned alot from Pat Gillick with his 3 years under him…Amaros first move should be trying to retain Burrell, then try and get Cole Hamels and Shane Victorino long term contracts,Howard we’ll prolly have to go to arbitration again because he’ll be demand another big raise…Then he should try and look for a pitcher in free agency like Derek Lowe or someone.

Not sure if this was mentioned but Gillick is remaining with the team as an “advisor”

Amaro has a LOT to do. He has tons of arb players to deal with as well as trying to keep burrell eyre and moyer. I think eyre signs easily, burrell elaves for the AL to be a DH (rays, mariners, blue jays, etc), and moyer at least tries one more year.
All said, Ill wait and see what he does. Gillick earned a PERMANENT free pass because of this championship, and hes staying on as a paid consultant. They finally got rid of arbuckle, which has been long awaited.
Other than extensions the main holes to fill are a right-handed hitting outfielder to replace burrell and a starting pitcher. they clearly wont go after sabathia or lowe or burnett, but id xpect them to go after a 3rd 4th or 5th type starter. they also need to sign another late inning reliever to tighten things up back there even more, i see them upgrading over rudy seanez there. i like happ but i still sense that theyre going to try and move him as part of a deal for the right-handed outfielder.
hopefully amaro has listened to gillick and taken some things away from his apprenticeship. hes going to be very busy.
