Hamels Says Mets Are ‘Choke Artists’
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Thu, December 11, 2008 11:42 PM
Cole Hamels was on WFAN today, and like a good Phillie, said something that would get immeasurable press:
“Last year and this year I think we did believe that [they were choke artists]. Three years ago we didn’t because they smoked everybody, and I think we all thought they were going to win it all. Unfortunately that didn’t happen.
“But, yeah, that’s kind of what we believed and I think we’re always going to believe that until they prove us wrong. For the past two years they’ve been choke artists.”
Now, bear with me, I don’t think Hamels was being completely arrogant here. I do think Hamels and the other Phillies thought the Mets were able to defeat everyone in 2006. And they were. They came excruciatingly close to winning the National League Championship Series; instead, the Cardinals defeated them, and they took care of an overmatched, green Detroit Tigers team. Really, that season was the Mets’ to lose, and they absolutely lost it.
2007, of course, was theirs to lose, as well. They should’ve won the East. They didn’t.
Last year, however, seemed a bit different. Though the Mets had a sizable lead on the Phillies in September, it never seemed out of reach. By 2008, the Mets had become almost a running joke.
Yes, while Hamels said something that will make him vilified beyond belief, it really isn’t far from the truth. And he absolutely believes that.

Cole speaks the truth.
December 11th, 2008 at 11:51 pm
cole is the man he speaks the truth u cant get much more of a choke artist then the METS . the mets will better next season though with the signings to improve there bullpen but the fightin phils will come out on top and repeat as in the words of chase “WORLD F*#KING CHAMPS
December 11th, 2008 at 11:55 pm
i heard it, and he was goaded into saying that. The WFAN guy said “choke” 2-3 times before Cole agreed with him. i can’t believe there’s even a stink about this.
December 11th, 2008 at 11:57 pm
Mets fan seem to have no idea what a “rivalry” is . We have dominated this rivlarly the past 2 years and everytime a phillies fan or player says the word “mets” they assume they have an inferiortiy complex.
But have n o fear phils fans for it is them with the inferiority complex. Proof: just check metsblog.com and read the posts and comments. They always mention the phillies like its a phillies blog. But here, this is just one of 2 posts in the past montht to mention the mets, and one of them was the krod signing.
phils fans>mets fans
December 11th, 2008 at 11:59 pm
Also, waht the hell was Cole doing on WFAN
December 12th, 2008 at 12:00 am
And that is the gospel, according to Cole. As if winning two playoff mvp awards weren’t enough, he absolutly solidified himself as one of the greatest Phils of all time.
December 12th, 2008 at 12:15 am
Cole was on a lot of stations. He was making media rounds promoting the DVD and charities.
December 12th, 2008 at 12:35 am
Somewhere out there Jimmy Rollins is laughing while thinking “Why didn’t I say that first!?”
The sad thing about the Mets and their fans is that as long as we have that trophy they don’t have anything to stand on in trying to debate that.
December 12th, 2008 at 12:37 am
we need this kind of stuff to get some passion circulating the phillies. they have earned the cities respect, now its time to make the bandwagon a permanent stay. lets have a nice rivalry goin on. he can back up his talk so why not?
December 12th, 2008 at 12:43 am
can someone please tell me why the heck you phillies fans and players are so obsessed with the Mets. I hope Hammels gets a fast ball right in his ear hole next April. Just a classic Philly player, doesnt know when to shut his mouth. Granted, they kind of pulled that remark out of him. He was kind of just agreeing with him rather than coming up with that statement on his own. But jeez, have a little class man. No Mets player would ever say that about an opponent. Who cares if it is true. We did choke the last 2 years. How do you think you got your championship? But its just something you don’t say on the radio. Why are Phillies players so friggin arrogant? And Jim….I can not believe you have the audacity to say how you have dominated the rivalry the last 2 seasons. Give me a break dude. in ‘07 you guys had the division handed to you on a silver platter. We gave it to you, you didn’t earn it. And last year, umm, dominated?? Take a look at our season record against each other…moron…we beat you 11 out of 18 games, dummy. But oh yeah, you dominated us, that’s right. And the only reason you guys came away with the division is because Wagner went down with 2 months to go. If we had our closer there is no way in hell you guys win the division. So once again you didn’t earn it, we gave it to you. One thing i will give you guys credit is how you stepped it up during the playoffs when it mattered the most. But please explain to me why so many Phillies players have to sit there and run their mouths about the Mets. I mean you guys couldn’t even win a championship with talking about the Mets. You guys are way to obsessed with the Mets. Its like you enjoy seeing the Mets fail more than you enjoying seeing your own team win. But you say its us that has the inferiority complex?? Yeah okay. All you guys do is talk about the Mets. Yes, i read this blog every day just to see what kind of shit you are talking about the Mets. I have never seen a baseball player talk as much shit as Victorino, Rollins, and Hammels. Especially Rollins. All he ever does is talk about the Mets. Right after you guys won, he’s sitting there say, “see, mets…this is what happens when you shut up and play”. What, is he like 12 effing years old. What an idiot. J Rollins is pu55y. Lil mama’s boy. I’m so sick of all you Phillies fans (and players) talkin shyt about the Mets. I cant wait until we dominate the division next year. I think the only way to shut you guys up is hurt you where it counts. In the standings. Then you guys will finally stop running your mouths because you all are front runners, just like your short stop said last Sept. LOL. How can you guys stand by your star player after he said that about you guys? But the sad thing is, he is right. He’s not stupid, he’s just ignorant. And he just doesn’t know when to shut his mouth.
December 12th, 2008 at 12:49 am
yawn. The sun rises and Mets fans whine.
December 12th, 2008 at 12:50 am
Cole should keep his mouth shut. The mets will be one of the only teams that can sign him when he leaves. He will be commanding big dollars and there are only five teams that can spend that kind of money. Mets,Yankees, RedSox,Angels, Cubs. By the way normally a riveraly is more than two years. The mets just don;t think of the phillies as a riveraly because most years we aren’t good. Rivarly like yankees redsox or boston celtics -los angeles lakers. teams that win title beating each other not a bad team that sometimes get good for a couple of years and wants to sell itself as a consistant rival.
December 12th, 2008 at 1:00 am
total nonsense mets fan. sorry you are right there is no rivarly. that is something the fans on this blog are trying to sell. But please you have big mouth billy wagner, on that team and Beltran, overrated player for the money, but I must admit love wright great player and santana . I trully believe the bullpen guys you added will make your team the easy division winner. your blew 29 saves and now have the save leader and a 8 inning stud. we lost a 17 game winner and will replace him with a cheap pitcher like park, advantage your team, we will replace burrell a right handed bat with 33 homeruns and a guy who protect howard with mark derosa or ibanez advantage mets.. so you don;t need to worry the division is yours.
December 12th, 2008 at 1:06 am
No rivalry? Conceding the division in December? My head hurts.
December 12th, 2008 at 1:10 am
wow i hope nobody wasted their time reading phillyhater.. these mets fans are so sensitive and need to take their tampons out for a few minutes and cool down. who cares? think cole is shaking in his boots now that mets fans are making such a hype and talking about pitching into his ribs? na hes probably sippin on a few beers pollishing a few trophies of his. get real
December 12th, 2008 at 1:11 am
I love how the Mets fans and New York in general are getting up in arms when Hamels was asked a loaded question where WFAN flat out called the Mets “choke artists” and then proceeded to ask Hamels if they were “choke artists.”
Sure, it sounds like smack talk out of context. But then again, that’s how New York loves to create controversies as if the Phillies are constantly obsessed with the Mets. Hamels was asked the question. He answered.
Same deal with Jimmy Rollins’ “team to beat” comment. The question was asked to him almost verbatim “Do you think the Phillies are the team to beat?”
You New Yorkers have seriously got to get over yourselves.
December 12th, 2008 at 1:15 am
even the guy who wrote this blog is a moron. Tim Malcolm, you are just like all the other phillies fans and players. Ignorant immature little kids on the playground. Thats what y’all remind me of.
“and like a good Phillie, he said something that would get immeasurable press”…omg, are you kidding me dude?
since when is getting immeasurable press a good thing? Well maybe it is in Philly land, but we have too much class for that kind of shyt. “and like a good little Phillie lol You guys should be concentrating more on improving your team and the hot stove report. instead of getting “immeasurable press” and starting controversy. But instead, once again, all you can think of to do is sit there and talk shyt about the Mets. You guys are really pathetic. Its sad
December 12th, 2008 at 1:19 am
Philly hater, maybe you should read the actual transcript before you go spewing your venom. You make it seem like Hamels said this on his own, saying it completely with his words. T
Question: Do you think the Mets are choke artists? A lot of Mets fans think they are. Do you look at it from afar and say, honestly, we know they are going to find a way to lose this thing.
Hamels: Last year and this year, I think we did believe that. Three years ago, we didn’t because they smoked everybody. I really thought was the year they were going to go to the World Series. Unfortunately, it didn’t happen. That’s kind of what we believe and I think we will always believe it until they prove us wrong.
Q: Wow. It’s worth repeating, you say the Mets are choke artists.
Hamels: Yeah, for the past two years they’ve been choke artists.
he interviewer was asking him about the Mets and he responded. What do you prefer, him responding about some other random team? He was asked a quesiton, he answered. Get over yourself, seriously. Go over to Metsblog and see how many posts are Phillies related or how often your fans can’t stop talking about the Phillies.
December 12th, 2008 at 1:19 am
“blah, blah, blah…Phillies stink…blah, blah, you guys are pathetic….blah, blah…you are classless….wah, wah”
Mets fans can just copy and paste this. It just summarizes the whining.
December 12th, 2008 at 1:21 am
Griffin, don’t forget, winning the season series is a bigger accomplishment to the Mets fans as opposed to the division or the league championship or the World Series. Because winning 11 out of 18 is far more important right?
December 12th, 2008 at 1:24 am
Good point, Mets fans bring that up as if it’s supposed to mean something. Congrats on going 11-7 against the Phillies. What an embarassment for the Phils, they must console themselves with another division title and a World Championship.
December 12th, 2008 at 1:27 am
SJ MIKE…maybe you should read what i just wrote in my comment ya big dummy. I said they pulled it out of him. He was just basically answering a question and agreeing rather than coming up with that on his own. I was listening to WFAN when the interview was being given.
December 12th, 2008 at 1:30 am
SJMIKE, i didnt say winning 11 out of 18 was more important. I was just disagreeing with what Jim said when he stated that you guys dominated us the last 2 years. PLease read what i say before you come at me with some bullshit.
December 12th, 2008 at 1:34 am
Sorry, I went crosseyed by your whiney ranting and extremely bad grammar.
However, that is the cardinal “come back” by any and all Mets fans justifying some sort of moral victory over the Phillies. That is usually followed with “we handed you the division” because apparently winning and losing is only determined by what a New York team does.
Well, if you have a problem with everything, just handle it the New York way. Throw lots of money at the it. Problem solved!
December 12th, 2008 at 1:37 am
hey heyy easy everyone.. take this cursing and bashing back over to metsblog.. we’re a little more classy here
December 12th, 2008 at 1:38 am
and i am a major contributer to metsblog every day, and very rarely are you guys the Phillies or their fans mentioned, so i dont know wtf you are talking about. Phillies fans talk more shyt than anyone. That is fact. You guys are obsessed with the Mets.
December 12th, 2008 at 1:40 am
SJMIKE….you say i have bad grammar?….read what you just wrote.
“Throw lots of money at the it. Problem solved!”
Typical phillies fan. Just trying to find anything to talk shyt about. Oh, lets criticize his grammar.
December 12th, 2008 at 1:41 am
phillyhater…it’s okay, you’ll have a chance next year to knock the DEFENDING WORLD SERIES CHAMPION PHILLIES off the mountain….just like the rest of the league.
“It’ll get old when someone else is the Champions, until then we’re on top and don’t your forget it”
December 12th, 2008 at 1:45 am
You must be looking at a completely different web site then, because I check it out often and your own readers were throwing fits about how much Phillies talk was going on there, especially in November. And a quick type of the word “Phillies” in your search function over there brings up 51 posts that feature the Phillies in the main post since October 29th, many of which are soley about the Phillies. And funny how those posts have hundreds of comments to each of them, especially Mets fans going on rampage rants about Shane Victorino and Jimmy Rollins.
You could’ve fooled me with that one and your “facts.”
But I forgot, the Mets and their fanbase are little angels who would never say or do anything wrong.
December 12th, 2008 at 1:47 am
Ahhh, the singling out of the one extremely minor typo. Well, I guess one slip up is a hell worthy trespass as opposed to that extremely long paragraph of nonsense. You totally got me cornered, I don’t know what I’m ever going to do.
December 12th, 2008 at 1:59 am
well how can you expect mets fans not to get mad when J Rollins says some of the stuff he says. For one, he called Philles fans “front runners” when you fell 3 games behind in Sept, and then as soon as you guys win it all, he’s sittin there saying, “see, this is what happens when you shut up and play” directed at the Mets. When he is the one who doesnt know when to shut up.
yeah, thats right, i am ranting. Thats what blogs are all about. Its all for fun. I just had to get some stuff off my chest.
As much as i hate the Phillies i will give alot of credit to how they stepped it up in the playoffs and played really well when it mattered the most. You guys really made the Rays look like they didnt even deserve to be in the playoffs.
Well its gonna be fun stealing your crown next year. You all know, if we had a half decent bullpen coming down the stretch, there’s no way you guys win the division. Now, someone try to tell me we all of a sudden have the best bullpen in the majors. At least on paper.
December 12th, 2008 at 2:01 am
Philly hater, a child on the playground? is that what you are calling us? Well to philosophical for a moment… If we were per say “children on the playground,” You would be the child wearing suspenders, glasses, and a helmet, getting knocked around the school yard. Stop crying. It’s really pathetic, and interrupts what is generally sophisticated talk. So go hug your “I love Gary Carter’s Hair,” doll and remeber that your team hasn’t won it since Doc Gooden was smoking Crack in the streets of Yonkers. See you when the season starts, as we begin our TITLE DEFENSE, and you try to shake the name “CHOKE ARTISTS” from your misreable little back.
December 12th, 2008 at 2:01 am
I didn’t hear the Cole Hamels interview, but I will say this,he was 100% correct.Phillies and their phans deserve to beat their chests, trumpet their bravado and bring out their machismo.Sorry fellow Amazins fans, its true, our Amazins have had their duffs knocked in the dirt for the last 3 years…but until they climb out of the dreks of 2 week choke jobs, they are always gonna be the underachievers that they are now, retrofitted bullpen,Johan Santana or not.I do remember someone from 20 years ago named David Cone, who opened his mouth to the Dodgers and had his head handed to them,so be careful Cole.I still support My Amazins and will root for them til my last breath and beyond but the Mets have to look in the mirrors and wonder if they can overcome their hatchet jobs that they have done to themselves.
December 12th, 2008 at 2:02 am
here’s what I know about the Mets new bullpen…they blew more Saves then our guy did, last year. It’s hard to top perfection.
December 12th, 2008 at 2:05 am
Good to know that only Phillies players talk. Because we all know that in ‘07 when Billy Wagner got beaten by Pat Burrell, insulting him by saying “He has a one path swing and I threw it right in his path.” Burrell performed an encore not too long after that in the 4 game sweep at the end of that August.
Or Paul Lo Duca during that season saying things like “We’ll get those guys soon. They may be dancing on the field now, but we’ll get them.” How about the famous “champagne will taste sweeter” quote. And of course “To Jimmy Rollins, we are the team to beat.”
And to think it all started because you guys freaked out over a similar situation as to this. A Phillies player being asked a loaded question and agreeing with the question. Rollins was asked if the Phillies were the team to beat and he agreed. Didn’t single out the Mets. It was the New York media and the Mets fans who started that whole thing up. You guys like making mountains out of molehills.
I’m glad that it gives you that much satisfaction and a boost to your self esteem to exhaust this much energy as going to Phillies blogs to pick a fight. It’s quite humorous to be honest.
December 12th, 2008 at 2:08 am
Grumpy Miner, check a few posts above. I posted the transcript. It was a loaded question where WFAN cornered it out of Hamels. Philly sports talk is the same way as New York sports talk radio: relentless when interviewing someone. They’ll ask you the same question over and over again to create a sound byte to get a rise out of people the exact same way this has gotten to this elevated level.
December 12th, 2008 at 2:12 am
The Mets were golfing in October.
December 12th, 2008 at 2:32 am
I don’t get the whole, “If the Mets had a good bullpen, they would have won the division” argument. Yea, you’re probably right. And if the Nationals had a good starting rotation and a good offense and a good bullpen, they might have won the division. If the Phillies had traded for Johan Santana, instead of the Mets, they might have blown out the NL East competition, instead of only winning by 3 games.
Phillyhater is right about us not “dominating” the Mets last year. If I remember correctly, the first and only series we won against them last year came in our final visit to New York of the season, in September. But hey, we won some games when we had to, especially in the 4 game Brewer series.
December 12th, 2008 at 2:40 am
I have a feeling it was jab from the perinial Yankee fan Mike Francessa who egged Cole into saying what he said.Same with Michael Kay,both are Yankee shills who will kill the Mets and proclaim them the bastard red-headed step children and I don’t have a better use for them.Thats Wright,I don’t listen to NY sports radio in the afternoon.I just put the XM on at work and listen to either Home Plate,Opie and Anthony,XM Holly or the decades channels when I get to work in the afternoons. Anothwr thing SJ,I read the transcript but my thoughts were on Phillies players and fans earning the Wright to say what they want to about my Amazins and theres not a thing the Mets or my fellow fans can say or do about it.
December 12th, 2008 at 2:58 am
PhillyHater, you need to calm down because it sounds like to me that you have a bad case of SHUT THE HELL UP!Now as I am a fellow Mets fan like yourself,i call out the Phillies any chance I get….but when you call out Tim,you are way out of line.I will never be a Phillies fan,but I do have respect for certain bloggers in here and I feel that I have earned their respect.Excuse me for being brutally honest esp to you,but I call it like it is.
December 12th, 2008 at 3:05 am
well than explain why did he say, “Cole Hamels was on WFAN today, and like a good Phillie, said something that would get immeasurable press”
that was the most ridiculous thing i heard on here yet. It just sums up how and why phillies fans say the things they say.
December 12th, 2008 at 3:18 am
Hater….the Phillies and their Phans deserve to knock the Mets,Yankees,Nationals,Royals,Padress and the sisters of St Agnes because they won the championship, they earned it.But remember in 09,all teams are 0-0 and as for the Phillies, the Hunters have become the Hunted. Now I may use that line repeatedly, yet it is the truth and the Phillies and their Phans know it and can’t shy away from it.Now as for Cole,After hearing the interview,I believe Francessa stirred the drink, also Cole can go on The FAN,WIP,The Team,WEEI,KNBR in San Fran,or sportsradio in Butte Montana whenever he wants and stations have that Wright to bring him on air, thats what good sportsradio stations do,get guests who have insight to their game and give 20 mins of good conversation..
December 12th, 2008 at 5:26 am
Haha…too funny! Good on Grrumpy Miner for calling it like it is – I knew there was a reason I think he’s the best Mets fan that posts here. As for Phillyhater – get over yourself. If this, if that, bad bullpen, blah blah blah. The Phils won the division and then blew the competition away in the playoffs.
I’ll take losing the ’season series’ all day as long as it means we win the WORLD F*CKING SERIES
December 12th, 2008 at 8:55 am
Hey; I thought Met bashing was Jimmy’s job! Go Phillies 2009!
December 12th, 2008 at 8:56 am
media outlets in all markets need to learn to not ask a question, it if you dont want to hear the answer. Its getting to be a joke. Interviewers just egging these guys on to get the controversial sound clip. If mets fans want to cry about anything it should be that their sports talk radio is covering cole hamels on a day they got jj putz. I guess they havent gotten as good as philly phans at looking forward to next season?
December 12th, 2008 at 10:14 am
ESPN reports Phils and Ibanez agree to 3-year $30 mil deal.
I like it.
December 12th, 2008 at 10:33 am
i haven’t been on here in awhile, but i just had to comment on what a sad sack of shit this “phillyhater” guy is. it’s almost laughable.
December 12th, 2008 at 10:45 am
Mr. Pot, meet Mr. Kettle. How ironic that that Cole, the guy that chokes when facing the Mets, would make this remark. Too funny!
December 12th, 2008 at 11:09 am
KB: This is what’s funny…. that is a loser Muts fan would be interested in anything posted on the WORLD CHAMPION PHILLIES blog. Choke away clown!
December 12th, 2008 at 11:15 am
What a typical reply from a Philadelphia fan like you Woodman. Resort to mudslinging and personal insult rather than reply with logic or intellect. See ya in ‘09! Can’t wait!
December 12th, 2008 at 11:18 am
KB weren’t you going to ’see us’ in ‘07 & ‘08?
December 12th, 2008 at 11:20 am
Hey KB, Choke against the Mets? He had one bad outing against the Mets last year that happened to be on Prime time. I get it, however, you really have to break your back to call out Cole as being a choke artist when he won not one, but two postseason MVP awards. How many did Mets players win? Oh I forgot, you have to get to the post season to win those awards. You Mets fans are complete idiots, but I can’t even say that you anger me anymore, I just pity you. Maybe your team should take Cole’s advice… Prove that you are not choke artists and we’ll stop calling you choke artists.
December 12th, 2008 at 11:27 am
its funny how when Reyes shows a little emotion and passion for his team, he’s being arrogant and inmature, but when Hamels opens his trap and talks shit (the norm for you guys) he’s a godsend, when Victorino shows emotion you guys throw him a bobblehead, Rollins talks shit about everybody and he’s booed then cheered. You guys can gloat over your Championship, thats cool….But the bottom line is you guys didnt dominate us this past year, you guys won a championship, and well deserved. But the truth is, since you guys won it, ya dont know how to act….its like you guys turned into the yankees man, be humble..For a team and fanbase that gets irate when other players act “Immature, and arrogant” you guys are acting IMMATURE AND ARROGENT, and trust me, that will come back and haunt you in the end.
December 12th, 2008 at 11:29 am
Hey, Phillies Nation…
How many rings does your team have? How about the Mets?
Is your team and older organization than the Mets? By how many years?
All Mets fan know that the Mets choked for two, arguably three years in a row, but was it necessary to say that?
I hope Cole Hamels gets one in the neck by Johan Santana. We’ll see if he’ll be able to speak, less utter a word then.
December 12th, 2008 at 11:31 am
WOAH the only reason ya made it to the playoffs was cuz of i were bullpen they blew 29 games for us phillies on the other didnt blow any so u do the math, the phillies aint better then the mets and we proved that on the head to head match ups so be thankful that we had a horrible bulppen or else ya wouldve been stuc with 1 lousy championship!
December 12th, 2008 at 11:36 am
I love this British Sh!t and I may move to England! 2009 Phillies and Mets trash talk and its not only still 2008 but we haven’t even hit Christmas yet. If being Hunted and Hated is the price for winning the World Series than may we have many enemys and be hunted for years to come! Let’s go Phillies!
December 12th, 2008 at 11:38 am
and the truth is, Hammels only mistake was being a Pawn….The Idiot needs to learns to control an interview…He should have reversed it and said. “well, their not choke artists, OUR TEAM just did a better job at the time in hand” in other words, he sounding like the reason the phillies won was because The Mets Choked.. So he made himself look like an ass…and not really giving your team any type of credit………lol…tell him to get some advice on how to handle the media from DWright.
December 12th, 2008 at 11:38 am
wahhh wahh waaaahhh waaaahhh waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahh. haha i love it. i encourage mets fans to post on here, everything they say is so sad and nonsensical – i am really enjoying this.
December 12th, 2008 at 11:39 am
Don’t all you loser MUTS fans have a blog you can cry on together? This is a PHILLIES blog for winners, not crybabies. Can’t wait for this year…. but even another post season sitting home won’t shut you losers up. Typical Muts fans.
December 12th, 2008 at 11:40 am
Geoff,
I’m not hating on your team for having won the World Series. Your team beat a competent Tampa Bay Rays team, so kudos to your Phillies.
I am criticizing your ace’s irresponsible, juvenile, and unacceptable comments. Although TRUE, it is an uneccessary. His statements are analogous to me saying, “Brett Myers is a wife beater.”
December 12th, 2008 at 11:42 am
nonsensical ???? PROVE IT!!
December 12th, 2008 at 11:43 am
Hey guys, I’m a Mets fan and I love Hamels. He’s the real deal!! I think it’s good to have someone every year pump up a rivalry hahahaa. About Rollins, even Philly fans can understand people not liking him. If a Met player called Met fans frontrunners, we’d run him out of NY hahahaaa. Surely you guys haven’t let him off the hook with THAT comment right?
December 12th, 2008 at 11:47 am
why would they let him off the hook, he was right, look at da name….lmao
December 12th, 2008 at 11:48 am
Mike T.,
Nonsensical, as in what I am saying is nonsense? How am I not making sense? Are you intellectually incompetent? Do you think that I’m speaking out of resentment?
You’re quite preumptuous, Mike. I’d be embarrassed if I were you as you make arbitrary claims with no concrete evidentiary support.
If anything, what YOU say is nonsensical. Sad.
December 12th, 2008 at 11:52 am
CHOKE ARTISTS!
Choke PHUCKIN’ Artists!
You da man Cole!!!!
BTW- I can’t watch that Sports Illustrated Phillies WFC offer enough…
December 12th, 2008 at 11:53 am
PHILLYHATER……is a true baller
but to back Tim Malcom up… we had to listen to gold-chain wearing, cheese-ball eating Mutts fans posting on here all season long about how the Phillies suck and what not. WHen it matters most, the Phillies win their games, and the Mutts don’t.
If the Mets would have won even more than 11 of 18 or whatever it was… they might have made the postseason, but instead, they got to work on their golf game in October… Mets can win all 18 next year if the Phillies still make the playoffs and the Mets don’t does it really matter?
December 12th, 2008 at 11:53 am
as a mets fan i find so funny that the phillies would offer ibanez 36 years old a 3 year contract but not to burell who is 32….wow so little respect.
December 12th, 2008 at 11:55 am
The on thing about this interview is the question was completely set up, “Do you think the Mets are choke artists?” Of course, he is going to say he thinks they are. It’s just like when Rollins was asked, “Do you think the Phils are the team to beat in the NL East?” 2 years ago. How else is he supposed to answer? The media sets up these question during interviews to make the players seem like they are flat out saying it, rather than responding to a question. Whatever, Hamels is the man for answering honestly.
December 12th, 2008 at 11:59 am
Wow Queen David the Mets Fan-
I am impressed by your choice of intellectual words dude. You make whinning sound like a presidential debate.
It’s still called whinning.
December 12th, 2008 at 12:00 pm
david, the mets fan from queens,
put down the dictionary, put down the thesaurus, and talk baseball.
i’m not here to argue prose.
December 12th, 2008 at 12:00 pm
David Mike T always says dumb things. You have to understand he might only be 12or 14 there is a lot of kids on this site. Or if they are older they are very stupid when it comes to trying to win. As a fifty year phillies fan, the other day I Made the point that we only have 2 tiltles in 130 some years. the response was that after you win the slate is clean. how stupid is that, also pointed out that we are a large market but act like a small market when it comes to doing what it takes to win. Hamels remarks were stupid. I sure the players did as well as they could at the time.IT to me is the G.M. fault for not getting them the help they needed. He has so far this year done a good job on paper. But he in my opinion signed a lot of older hurt players. that’s why it didn’t make sense to me that he got a contract extension. there are very few on this site who are objective IF you want to hear nonsense log on sometime and read the post by Don M and Geoff they say if the team spends a lot they can’t go to games the prices would be too high. This from fans who are rooting for the fourth largest market in baseball and the second largest that doesn’t share a market like you team does. So it better not sometime try to answer the stupid post they make. have a nice day
December 12th, 2008 at 12:04 pm
Or.. actually read the posts and tell me the prices of everything wouldn’t go up if our payroll increased to around $200 M ?
December 12th, 2008 at 12:16 pm
These Mets fans get so easily offended… geez… MAN UP
December 12th, 2008 at 12:28 pm
i didn’t think it was possible for mets fans to find these annoying angles to whine and complain about the phillies, especially after we won the world series — but they did so, credit given. i hope you’re all happy up there in new york.
December 12th, 2008 at 12:29 pm
Grow some friggin balls Mets fans. Go back to that toilet bowl you call Flushing NY, and drown yourselves in it. The only reason you are so up in arms about Cole’s comments is because there is truth in what he says. Need proof? Exhibit A: David Wright crying like a school boy who fell off of the monkey bars on the top steps of the dugout two years in a row. Exhibit B: Beltran says: “We are the team to beat.” Correct and in September the last two years, that happened often. Exhibit C: Jose Reyes hit under the Mendoza line in August and September last year, when it counted. I could go on, but talking about the Mets ability to choke is boring me, there’s more important things to talk about, like how we’re going to defend our TITLE!
December 12th, 2008 at 12:29 pm
If you were a true fan and not a fly by night fan.You would have said I will watch it on tv. as long as my team wins. winning brings pride to my city and makes me proud to be a phillies fan. even though if they lose they are still my team. But as I have stated before you are either a employee of the phillies or another bill giles lacky. like Amaro ,Wade. I refuse to believe anyone who wants them to do well .Would say if they spend what it takes to win then I can’t go. I never said to spend 200 million. What I want is a committment to win. that means more dollars in the draft. which would help them fill the spots of fa and hurt players, more in the international market/ they have not done a good job in the player development. hardly anything since cole hamels, wasted years like 2004 with moss, next year golson. salvery . misjudges the talent of Floyd with bad minor league instructor and if you thinik that is not true then check out the staff at reading getting fired, NJmike said I was wrong Carrasco didn;t get moved up to triple a because of the staff at reading, well that is another lie he was not pitching well at reading and they moved him and he all of a sudden at a higher level starter to pitch better why? before the year on Phuture phillies a lot of us couldn’t understand why the phillies put a incompentent person like forbes at reading. So if you can’t spend at the major league level then do it in player development. right now how many of there player are drafted by them out of the international market. think of all the players out of that market that we ignore.
December 12th, 2008 at 12:30 pm
HOW ABOUT THIS FOR A T-SHIRT:
Hamels Says Mets Are ‘Choke Artists’
-I just saw it on CNN
December 12th, 2008 at 12:31 pm
mikem… Its people like you that make the internet suck. taking shots at people on the computer and telling everyone how stupid other people are.
Obviously we all know that we’ve only won 2 WS titles.. but since we just won the last one, why the hell would you complain about the total? … keep being bitter for a while, and when you’re done with that, explain to me how ticket prices wouldn’t go up if we jack up the payroll and sign players to bad deals just for the hell of it. And then go back and read where I said no matter what I end up going to at least 10-15 games a year…
I’d just rather not pay $50 a ticket to see the Phillies, because I’ve watched them my whole life and don’t want to see them become “corporate” like the NY Yankees, or even the Eagles, etc.. I don’t want extra luxury boxes added, and all that crap because it takes away from REAL fans going to games.
I’m not poor.. but I’m not rich either.. and If you can afford to go to every single game ever and not worry about the ticket prices, thats great. The rest of us have to watch our money. have a nice day
December 12th, 2008 at 12:34 pm
yeah, mike m is becoming a real headache.
December 12th, 2008 at 12:41 pm
Check out all the articles about Mets ticket prices going up, they went up last year at Shea, and they are almost doubling the prices in the new stadium.. to which many are saying
“They’re trying to go corporate and they dont care about the real fans”
“Id rather have them stay at Shea and be able to afford to go”
I didn’t mean to imply that YOU wanted the payroll to go to $200 M… but we currently have Howard, Hamels, Victorino, Werth, Ruiz, Madson all making a fraction of what they’ll make in the coming years.. so to go sign guys like Derek Lowe, and to make a 36 year old the highest paid player on your team, and for a 4-year deal will either limit the players you can add around him in future years.. or will dramatically increase the payroll, and to pay for that added payroll, the prices of everything go up for the average fan.
I’m fine with them spending lots of money if they do it in the right ways.. Hamels and Victorino extensions, etc. Lidge getting $12 M… I just don’t want them signing bad contracts because as we’ve seen in NY, the fans end up getting screwed because of it
December 12th, 2008 at 12:42 pm
proved my point this isn’t about the phillies its about if you and Mike t can go to the game, that’s a real fan. talk of internet sucks just listen to yourstupid logic for why the team should’n try harder to win. uf b.
December 12th, 2008 at 12:49 pm
i wish i could somehow flag mike m’s comments as spam.
December 12th, 2008 at 12:51 pm
thats so true…im happy with them boosting it a bit like theyre doing this year, and still being able to afford to go to the games…if they do it anymore, to the point where section 303 costs like 30-40, then screw that…its a 20 dollar level, and to start jacking it up is annoying..
December 12th, 2008 at 12:53 pm
CBP is pretty corporate too, so its a real nice bonus that the games are affordable, and you can buy a few 6 packs of seats and not worry about it..with the flyers youve gotta like, prepare to go knowing that youre going to drop mad bank at that place..
December 12th, 2008 at 12:56 pm
WFAN should be called WMETSUCK
From April until Septmber the station is devoted to hating the Mets for every loss they bring to New York. Yet when Hamels is coerced into saying something about the Mets two consecutive September collapses, after backing up his talk by earning the World Series MVP award, some Mets fans go apeshit. They need to get over it, next year is a new season. The rivalry is fun and exciting when you enjoy it instead of getting your panties in a wad.
December 12th, 2008 at 12:58 pm
David, the Mets fan from Queens Says:
“I hope Cole Hamels gets one in the neck by Johan Santana.”
First off, why the neck? Did you ever play baseball? Second,
I am glad you’re paying him 23 million a year to do something! Because Obliviously you can’t win with him! Maybe you can hire him to help build the new stadium since you all are a little short with money….. you would be getting a little more for your money…..just trying to help.
PS… (JUST SHUT UP!)
December 12th, 2008 at 12:58 pm
Do you want to see them become the Yankees and only watch them on TV instead of going to more games at the stadium? I don’t… I’d rather see them continue to develop their players, and make good trades. Buying championships isn’t that cool… If you were a Yankees fan, how much can you really like the fact that you have an All-Star team, and just try to buy Championships..
If you want the Phillies to become that, Im not with you.. and If you think that makes you a better fan than me.. cool
December 12th, 2008 at 1:03 pm
Oh, one way I would like to see the Phils be more like NY is in televised sports coverage. CSN doesn’t cover the Phils as well as MSG does the Mets. And YES is even better for the Yanks, but I guess that’s obvious.
December 12th, 2008 at 1:10 pm
the yankees fans have been driven away by corporatism and fake celebrity fans..you cant be that loyal to a team you only watch on tv and never see in person….which is why im not loyal to the eagles…
December 12th, 2008 at 1:11 pm
teh red sox have become that way too…ever since they won and started spending huge, theyve attracted a legion of fake fans because their real fans are getting muscled out of fenway
December 12th, 2008 at 1:20 pm
I agree… every time I would go to CBP for a game, I could FEEL being more and more involved with the Phillies… it’s like building a relationship. It’s not the same for someone who goes to 3 home games vs. someone who goes to 10-20.
December 12th, 2008 at 1:42 pm
All Wright everyone…..back in your corners!First off,I’ll go back to August 26,2008 Mets at Phillies Mets had a 7-5 lead in the 8th….today Putz and K-Rod could have handled that pressure,Instead our poison pen consisted of Sanchez (Who was charged with the run),Feliciano (Who let the run score) and Joe Smith. Now a 7-6 lead in the 9th,Luis Ayala spit the bit and the Phils tied the game.Heilman did the job for 3 innings, and Enter Schowenweis who spit the bit himself. That Knight, the Phillies showed a lot of grit and took advantage of a bad weakness the Mets had,and after the game,I tipped my Mets cap to them. Now I bring this game up;WHY?Mets would still be a game out from the Phils and a Wild Card Berth would have been clinched at the very least a tie and a Home game at Shea to clinch over the Brewers.
December 12th, 2008 at 1:46 pm
Call it picking sticks, but for ALL Mets fans,That game was the turning point of our season and was the epitome of what a bad bullpen can accomplish,4 pitchers,2 innings,2 runs to close out a very winnable game. Now 2008 is over and the Phillies are the World Fvcking Champs…..We have to understand it and respect it,no matter how much it kills me.
December 12th, 2008 at 1:57 pm
And there is NO DOUBT that the Mutts got a lot better by adding two legit back end pieces to their bullpen. But doesn’t it bother you that the Angels were 100% willing to let K-Rod walk away, especially when he only got a 3 year deal instead of the $75/5 he was seeking.
As a Phillies fan I realize that the Mutts bullpen improved, but I think it would be foolish to think K-Rod is better than Brad Lidge (by a difference of 8 blown saves)
And at the end of 2009, when they are both Free Agents.. Ryan Madson will be sought by more teams as their closer than JJ Putz (who battled injuries recently).
So I still like the Phillies 8th-9th pitchers better than the Mets, but its not as overwhelming as last year by any means
December 12th, 2008 at 2:20 pm
Look if everyone would stop whining it would be a good thing. The Phillies won it all last year and good for them. If your a Mets fan move on..if your a Philles fan enjoy it and hope you have the same success this year. Everyone complains about the trash talk between players..sounds like the fan are even worse. The Philles won 2008 (and no I am not a Phillies fan) but there is nothing anyone can do about that now its the past..and again congrats to them. 2009 is coming up the mets just improved their obvious glaring weakness and the phillies just signed a good outfield bat. Lets see how things shake out this year and may the best team win..be it the phillies, mets, or whoever…well except for the yankees haha.
December 12th, 2008 at 2:30 pm
Mets are a joke!!
December 12th, 2008 at 2:42 pm
Yea, it definitely won’t be the Mets.. they are choke artists
December 12th, 2008 at 3:02 pm
if you’re not first.. you’re last
December 12th, 2008 at 3:50 pm
I almost agree with Cole Hamells stated fact that the Mets are choke artist. Not all the Mets, just the Crappy few in the bullpen (HEILMAN,SMITH,SCHOENWEISS). Two of the three are gone and the third is about to be shipped out. They were replaced with K-rod, Putz, and Green. These three have the balls needed to compete, unlike the other three. Don’t forget we still have Billy Boy. I hear he is rehabbing way ahead of schedule and should be ready to pitch by August. WOW, now that is some bullpen to have down the stretch in September. I am happy the Phillies won the world series. Why? Because now the hunger has been fed. The phillies will once again be the complaisant lovable losers for the next 20 years. Sorry thats my opinion. Please don’t be insulted.
December 12th, 2008 at 3:53 pm
Hamels makes me laugh. What have the Phillies done but choke ever year since the 80’s before the last two. He is lucky the Mets bullpen was so terrible the last two years. And now look who they got for the pen. Watch out.
The Mets, Braves and Marlins have battled it out for the NL East for years while the phillies just looked silly. So, congrats you won your championship. Enjoy it because it will be a long time until you see that again.
It is not surprising Hamels is shooting his mouth off. He probably got lessons from his other big mouth teammates Rollins, Burrell and Victorino.
December 12th, 2008 at 3:53 pm
Oh I almost forgot, the ironic part is that in 4 years Cole Hamells is going to be a Met.
December 12th, 2008 at 4:11 pm
Hamels has way too much class to ever consider putting on a stinking MUTS uniform…. at any price. Dream on you “Choke Artist” fans!
December 12th, 2008 at 4:29 pm
a RealMetsFans… sport a FakeTan during baseball season… its weird
December 12th, 2008 at 4:47 pm
1986. It was 22 years ago.
December 12th, 2008 at 5:05 pm
Wagner’s career is over….he has relied his whole career on a hard STRAIGHT fastball that has drop over the last two years…which step up his average slider. Without that 98-100 mph fastball he’s a 2 pitch pitcher that won’t be able to compete at the minor league level, so why would you want him in your bullpen. He’s not even close to the wagner of old. Sorry that’s my opinion.
December 12th, 2008 at 8:57 pm
The bitterness some of you Mets fans show is downright laughable. The funny thing is most of the Phillies fans on here are just happy to win a championship and don’t really think much of Cole’s comments (since he was of course goaded into making them). No matter how much you whine, the Phillies are still the 2008 World Champions of Baseball (never gets old typing that).
And “shut up,” I am confused, were the Mets dominating the division during the down years of the Phillies?? As I recall they broke the Braves 13 game winning streak in 06 but that was it. They were one of the sad sack teams in the 90’s. And oh yea, its been 22 years since they won a title, which by my book is pretty long time.
All this being said, I respect the Mets, but I just don’t get the fans. If you think you’ll take the division from us in 2009 thats cool, but why try and down play our championship? And what reason is there to think the Phillies won’t be competitive next year also? You guys make it sound like they are a one and done team. This team was built for a long repeated run at the prize in strong core players like Utley, Rollins, Howard, and Hamels. I know it sucks for Mets fans to see the Phils at the top, but you might as well get used to it cause they are not going anywhere for a while.
December 12th, 2008 at 9:28 pm
Cole spoke the truth. We all know it. Even the Mets fans know it deep down. They choked it two years in a row. And they’ll be considered choke artists until they prove otherwise and win some big games in September and October.
That team has a lot of talent, but no mental toughness. They’re soft.
The Phils are the most mentally tough team in the league. That’s why they beat the Mets two years in a row (when the talent was probably even). And why the Phillies are World Freakin’ Champions!
Mets fans, look at the bright side: the Cubs choked big time this year too, so y’all at least have some company.
And misery loves company.
December 12th, 2008 at 11:13 pm
Mike T.,
I am glad you can even understand mikem; I could not make sense of anyof it.
Grrrumpy Miner,
I still don’t like the Mets, but you know, you have said something that many Mets fans could not say, and now I respect you for it. At least you point to solid games and not just some of the hate that many Mets fans come in here and spew.
I do hope K-Rod works out for you all. I am skeptical of him – not because he is a Met – but because he is 26 and has all these problems brewing.
Of course, I am a Phillies fan and don’t wish him too much luck now… Thank you for being mature about the posts.

December 13th, 2008 at 1:28 am
Let me add that I will not comment on the Mets ONLY because if they blow us out of the water this year I don’t want to look like an a$$. Last year, I had to endure Mets fans saying we were so horrible, and they were the team to beat. I know what I thought of those who said that, so I just won’t say it. I will be thrilled if the Phillies win again though.

phillyhater your one to talk about being arrogant and showing class. Saying cole should take one in the ear wow I believe we refer to that as being a hypocrite, and I wont even begin talking about your other comments but I pray you come to a philly mets game cause if I see you there Ima roll on your ass
December 15th, 2008 at 10:31 am
Lets be honest here for a moment. The Phillies had a 10 game lead in June-July that they couldn’t hold. The Mets had the worst bullpen in baseball that contributed to 29 loses just from them. If the bullpen was even somewhat decent they would’ve won half of those games and we wouldn’t be talking about this. The Phillies with the best bullpen in baseball only won 92 games. Lets not forget Billy Wagner being gone the last 7 weeks of the year. Moving on, you can’t say you did not have an easy road to the World Series. First Milwaukee is just plain terrible and the Phillies and Mets dominated them this year. And for Christs sake you played the Dodgers in the NLCS, they aren’t even one of the top 10 teams in baseball. Fortunately they play in this pathetic division called the NL West. Then you guys played the Rays that nearly blew the ALCS to the Red Sox and came in barely to the WS. I’ll tell you one thing, you guys are EXTREMELY lucky to not play the Red Sox cause they would’ve ripped you guys. The whole reason for the Mets collapse last year was obviously the bullpen and this has been addressed so far this year. We will see in 2009 what will happen but the last time the Phillies won a WS they had 26 years of losing.
December 26th, 2008 at 1:35 am
Maybe I don’t know the definition of “Choke artist,” but I don’t think a 13-10 September record qualifies as the definition of choke artist. The Mets went 13-10 in September, while the Milwaukee Brewers went 10-15. I think the 10-15 record definitely comes much closer to the definition of choke artist. Who swept the Brew Crew at the start of September? The Mets. Somehow, the Brewers snuck in. And what was the Mets’ greatest lead on Philly in the closing weeks? 31/2 games wasn’t it. Not much of a lead. Let’s call the 2008 playoff race what it really was: A hotly-contested race that went down to the final inning. Geez, the Mets win 89 games and they’re being called choke artists???
