Manuel: I’ll Take Burrell In 2009
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Thu, December 11, 2008 03:13 PM
Charlie Manuel said, via Jayson Stark, that he’d like to bring Pat Burrell back in 2009.
“When I think of his good points versus his [negatives] speedwise, the more I look at it and see what’s out there … I weigh all that and I think, ‘Look, we won the World Series with him out there. So would I like him back? I don’t see why not.’”
“Speedwise,” he says. Still, if the price is right, I don’t see why not.

As much as I’d rather have someone else, I would take Burrell at 1-2 years for 6-8 mill for that span.
December 11th, 2008 at 3:28 pm
i think we’d probably be around our original offer of 2 years 20-22mill…i’d liek it to though as much as i would rather have someone that hits .280-.290. i would trade in .245 with 30 hrs for .285 and 15-20 homers anyday
December 11th, 2008 at 3:32 pm
He is a true Phillie. Lets keep him and win another series with him hitting clutch homers in the NLCS and hitting balls off the top of the fence in the last few innings of Game five of the World Series.
December 11th, 2008 at 3:43 pm
no thank you he is slower than a turtle and he wont show up for half of the season. He thought he would have alot of teams in the hunt for him and that he was going to get another big payday. Ill pass on him
December 11th, 2008 at 3:56 pm
LF isn’t an issue then. time to step up and grab lowe or trade directly for peavy. kendrick with coste/jarmillo and money should do the trick
December 11th, 2008 at 4:00 pm
I’ll pass on Burrell, also. He either (1) ends the inning with a K (usually looking) or a groundout DP, or (2) clogs up the bases when he gets on. In the field, the only reason he had so many outfield assists is because J-Roll makes killer relay throws to home. I can’t recall even one instance where Pat actually threw someone out at the plate. I’d love to see Milton Bradley or Raul Ibanez in LF in ‘09. Bradley is close friends with Chase, and Ibanez, though a left-handed bat, hits lefties real well and is very much a great guy in the clubhouse.

If we sign him for one year, and an option for the 2nd that would be great.. because maybe our prospects jump up and are ready to go by the end of next year.. if not, we still have an option year on Burrell
December 11th, 2008 at 4:12 pm
you didn’t watch enough games if you don’t remember burrell throwing anyone out. he got guys at 2nd a few times too. option in year 2 would be good, gives chance for trade bait in a year where there might not be as many OF FA’s as now
December 11th, 2008 at 4:14 pm
For all you guys who say you wouldnt take Pat back…who do you suggest we get?
There are only a handful of players at that position that are better than Burrell.
Manny, Holliday, Braun, Quentin and Damon. Burrell is easily in the top 10.
We missed our chance on Holliday. Unless we are planning to sign Manny. Burell is the best option.
The only reason I would think we wouldnt bring back burrell is to get a cheaper replacement so we can use the money to sign a starting pitcher.
December 11th, 2008 at 4:24 pm
I’ve always been for resigning Pat, given the options out there. Someone posed a question last night on DNL- How many games did Pat actually cost us with his defense? The answer was as far as anyone could recall, zero. Charlie managed that LF situation pretty well, so I think all this talk of him being practically a cripple out there is bogus.
December 11th, 2008 at 4:32 pm
What about Coste in LF? It opens a spot up at catcher, give Phils a 3rd catcher in emergency and gets his bat in the lineup more frequently. He’s no slower than Burrell and a lot cheaper.
December 11th, 2008 at 4:36 pm
Very good point Georgie.
My only beef with Burrell is the inconsistency and he tends to try very hard to get walked on to the point where he watches fastballs down the middle of the plate without moving the bat.
but other players have their downside as well and pats upside outwieghs the bad
December 11th, 2008 at 4:39 pm
GREENIL is smoking green.. Coste? He could’t hit a beach ball off a tee. he sucks
December 11th, 2008 at 4:41 pm
It hurts me to watch Pat run the bases but he doesn’t really misplay balls (he always plays conservatively) and he has a decent arm to make up for his lack of range (and a Flyin Hawaiian in CF to cover the in between areas). Georgie is right… he didn’t cost us any games because of his defense, Charlie did manage that situation well and Pat would be welcomed back… he has to take a paycut and give us a hometown discount. We have been overpaying him for the last few years and he needs to return the favor. If not Pat, then Dunn or Manny.
Green- Coste in LF??? That suggestion is in LF.
December 11th, 2008 at 4:42 pm
Maverick – who’s GREENIL? Merry Christmas!
December 11th, 2008 at 5:02 pm
I’d be for resigning Burrell but we need to take care of pitching first and see if (or how much) $$ is left.
December 12th, 2008 at 2:08 am
you guys are freaking nuts you know that i would take Burrell any day Raul Ibanez just looks like another pedro feliz to me i think he’ll struggle he just had a good year and by the way hes a lefty i certainly don’t wanna see 3straight leftys go down in late inning when a nice right handed bat was in there. And lets not forgot if there wasnt 30mph winds pat burrell would have had a Game-winning WS HR for game 5. If your not gonna sign Manny then there shouldnt be a discussion i say give him a base 8million contract included with incentives based on his statistical performance and a club option for 2nd year and a mutual third year club option with a 2 mill buy out per season. incentives per year should be no hgiher than say 6million that way he gets the money he wnats if he hits and we won’t get burned badly. if he struggles.
