Phillies Extend Manuel Through 2011
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Wed, December 10, 2008 02:18 AM
The Phillies have extended Charlie Manuel’s contract one more year, through 2011.
Manuel led the Phillies to their first world championship since 1980, their second overall. He’s managed the Phils through two National League East titles since coming aboard in 2005. His overall record, including playoffs: 365-297.

Congrats, Uncle Charlie……..well deserved !
December 10th, 2008 at 6:00 am
Absolutely well deserved…I would have liked to see them extend him longer (2013 or so)…he said he wanted to manage 5 years or so and retire a Phillie. Given his record here, and especially the WFC, he’s earned whatever he wants.
I guess it’s the Philly fan perspective to complain about basically good news, and for all I know (other than the ‘he wants to manage for 5 more yrs’ report), Charlie only wanted the 2011 extension, so definite congrats to Charlie, bar none the classiest manager/coach of any Philly team in a long while. He got a ton of grief from fans (me included) and media his whole time, and yet (in a moment I will never forget) when we won the World Series he said a few words, Jeanne Zelasko took the mic, and Charlie took it back to scream “ALRIGHT, LISTEN, THIS ONE’S FOR PHILADELPHIA!!!”
Bar none the best moment of my life of Philly sports fandom.

I don’t agree with charlie’s moves but they work, He knows how to get the best out his players. congraulation charlie.

Pete I was at that game, and when he screamed this is for Philadelphia, this is for the fans I cried. It was really touching.

Chahlie is unique, he did what he needed to do to make the team gel. Did everyone think he was nuts to let the AS Bobby Abreau go? To pick up a rag tag relief team? No big stars in the BP, only 1 genuine starter (perhaps Joe B is the other?) and yet wow, what a ride!
Look at this team. Sure, there are potential HOF’ers – as long as they remain healthy – (Howard, Utley, Rollins?) but, the reason why the Phils got into the playoffs is their relief pitching which performed on all cylinders this past wonderful, magical year.
Look at these guys! Romero, Durbin, Seanez, Gordo (after the first game of the season, before he got hurt), Condrey and even Madson & Lidge. No fresh faces, they have all seen time & been ridiculed for what seemed lack-luster performances in the past and yet they all tied it together under Chahlie…
This year in order to win it all, Howard & Rollins have to approach their MVP status, when Utley comes back he needs to ride that AS express as he has been doing… then perhaps we can sustain last years performances from the bullpen.
Way to go Chahlie!
Anyone else having trouble with putting together some ticket purchases? I was hoping to expand this year but cannot find anything close to my seats available.
Also, this year the Phils are saying that there will be a lottery for opening day tickets. I have gone to the home opener for 3 years in a row, what a dissapointment. The ticket office said that season ticket holders are guarenteed opening day tickets. When I looked into getting a full season plan, the seats available are not what I would want. I guess I have to stick with what I have had – and be happy!
