Phillies Select 3 In Rule V Draft
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Thu, December 11, 2008 03:54 PM
The Phillies selected three players in the Rule V draft today.
First Round (MLB): Bobby Mosebach, RHP, Angels
In 2008, Mosebach, 23, went 9-12 with a 4.62 ERA for AA Arkansas. He struck out 88 and walked 69. And he hasn’t really had a good year since 2006, when he was playing A-ball. He’s a groundball pitcher, too.
I can’t see him sticking on the Phillies in 2009. He’ll be offered back.
First Round (AAA): Kyle Haines, 2B, Giants
Haines hit .259 with a .691 OPS (0 HR, 42 RBI) for the Giants AA club. Nothing special at all here. Maybe he’s a defensive-minded player?
Second Round (AAA): Javis Diaz, OF, Padres
Another poor hitter, he stole 28 bases last season for the Padres A+ team. Nothing else says he’s a winner.
If a player isn’t stashed on their drafted roster all season, they have to be offered back to their original team. Something tells me all three will meet that fate.

Random thought: The White Sox are said to be the favorites to land Bobby Abreu (the Venezuelan connection with Ozzie). That means the White Sox may be looking to move Dye. Would Dye be a consolation prize once we lose out on Lowe?
December 11th, 2008 at 4:42 pm
The Phils might get lucky and have one of the rule 5 picks refused by the original team like last year, still have hopes for Blackley.
December 11th, 2008 at 4:49 pm
Did the Phils lose anyone in the draft?
December 11th, 2008 at 4:53 pm
Dye would be a huge pickup. he’s not a consolation prize, he’s the perfect fit for the Phils. The problem is he doesn’t want to play here.
December 11th, 2008 at 4:53 pm
The Phillies didn’t lose anyone in the major league portion of the draft, but lost C Richard Suomi, RHP Brett Harker and RHP Ronald Hill in the AAA portion.
December 11th, 2008 at 4:55 pm
Hey Griffin, the White Sox were looking to move Dye because they are looking to cut payroll. Why would they want Abreau if he will be making even more then Dye?
December 11th, 2008 at 5:03 pm
I think Ozzie loves Abreu. I’ve read on numerous websites that they are the favorites, with the Rangers trailing, in the Abreu sweepstakes. They’ve cut payroll by dealing away Vasquez, so I’m not sure how much more they want to cut. I bet they regret that Paul Konerko extension though.
December 11th, 2008 at 5:06 pm
Another random note. This is from Keith Law’s chat on ESPN. Keith used to be a huge Lou Marson supporter, but….
“Justin (PA): what do you think about Lou Marson?
Keith Law: I think he hits the ball into the ground way too often, and that it’s a swing issue. It limits his upside as a hitter.”
December 11th, 2008 at 5:16 pm
Rumor time: Jayson Stark says talks between Raul Ibanez and the Phillies are heating up and that Ibanez has told friends that the Phillies are his top choice.
December 11th, 2008 at 5:32 pm
If we’re going hard after Ibanez, I imagine that means we’re waving the white flag on Lowe. Oh well…
And I’m still a little confused why our top OF target would be a lefty. Does the front office really think Johnny Wacko is adequate protection for Howard?
December 11th, 2008 at 5:38 pm
I’m with you Pete. I think this means that we’ve given up on Lowe and don’t understand why we’re adding a 37-year old, left-handed hitting, terrible fielding outfielder.
December 11th, 2008 at 5:41 pm
Im not on board with this move…stark is wrong a lot though…
December 11th, 2008 at 5:46 pm
Hey Grif,I hear what Law is saying about Marson, he has never had more then 32 extra base hits in any of his minor league seasons and his career slugging percentage isn’t even .400. But that being said he has still raised his average bigtime over the past 3 years and is still only 22. I think the more he matures as a hitter, he will make adjustments and will become more of a a line drive hitter with a little more pop.
