Amaro has already come out and said Ruiz is the no.1 back-stop, would make no sense to trade him now and nothing has changed from the likely scenario of Marson being groomed this year to take over from Ruiz who’ll likely stay around as the experienced veteran back-up with excellent defense.

Paulino adds depth and a good RHB and the only person who’s position is seriously affected here is Coste, I’m not sure on Paulino’s options but I’d expect him to see him spending time behing the plate and around the infield in AAA which would instantly improve LV.

Now we have two ML backup catchers on our roster. We are not going to be able to move both of them. They must feel like Marson is a year away. I guess you can’t put your faith in Marson as a full time backup at this point… if Ruiz goes down, you still need to have a ML ready catcher but aren’t guys like Sal Fasano and Chris Coste a dime a dozen? There better be more to this…

Mets traded for JJ Putz… and we’re stuck in the mud trying to help the Cubs get Jake Peavy.

I like the trade.

They trade Jaramillo who might some day be major league catcher for Paulino who is already a major league catcher.

I think they grabbed him because he has higher trade value than Jaramillo and he may be included in the Peavy deal, or in another deal we know nothing about. I’d be surprised if he’s with us in ST, but who knows?

Yeah, this just seems like a lateral move. Hopefully a trade is in the works that will make the big picture come together.

I don’t understand this trade one bit. Is this supposed to be an upgrade over Coste? I’m a little saddened by what seems to be a lack of confidence in Coste by the fans and management. I hope Charlie realizes how much Chris has contributed the past few years, both offensively and defensively, and find a spot for him on the 25-man roster. I know Ruiz has incredible catching talent, but Chris is no slouch either. I haven’t seen any other catcher throw out Jose Reyes from his knees.

I think Paulino is trade bait because I’ve been reading all day or for the last few days teams that are starved for catching trying to get their hands on Paulino, like the Marlins and Tigers before they got Laird, maybe the Phils grabbed him to try to grab Hermida or some other outfielder off a team looking for a catcher and we send them Paulino, I doubt the Phils will let Marson go
