Phils, Cards Talked Early Morning Trade
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Tue, December 09, 2008 09:55 AM
Welcome to Day 2 of the Winter Meetings.
Gerry Fraley of FOX Sports writes the Cardinals and Phillies indulged in some trade talks around 2:30 a.m. Supposedly Rick Ankiel was dangled to Atlanta, but the Phils were probably more interested in Ryan Ludwick:
Ryan Ludwick would be the best fit for the Phillies, but the Phils might not want to break up their bullpen and the Cardinals would want a top-flight reliever in return.
That tells me a main cog in a deal with the Cardinals would have to be Ryan Madson.

Ryan Madson and Kyle Kendrick for Ludwick. Get it done then pull out of the Peavy trade because you no longer need an outfield bat anymore so Derosa won’t help at all.
December 9th, 2008 at 10:06 am
I see no need to break up our World Champion team to fill in the only 2 holes we have. We have to fill one via FA and the other one with our own guys. These trade talks are driving me nuts.
December 9th, 2008 at 10:07 am
We need the arm more than we do the bat unless the FO has no confidence in re-signing Madson.
December 9th, 2008 at 10:10 am
this trade wont happen…ryan madson has more value than ludwick….
December 9th, 2008 at 10:22 am
I would pull the trigger on that in a heartbeat… Madson’s “personal value” is sky-high.. after this past postseason, every team is looking at him as a guy that can hit 96-97mph on the radar gun, with “the best changeup on the Phillies”
WE know that both of those things are not true.. Madson tops out around 94-95, and he’s got a hell of a changeup, but Hamels is better.
Madson is going to go somewhere next year as a 3 year deal to be a closer, and we’ll lose out.. If Ryan Ludwick is under control for the next 2 years, make this trade, if he would also become a Free Agent, you can’t make the move
December 9th, 2008 at 10:25 am
Ludwick was called up late…last year may have even been his first full injury-free season..hed under control cheaply for a while..i dotn even think hes in arb yet…i guess if you look at it that way its good..
December 9th, 2008 at 10:34 am
He’s almost 30, and last year was the first time he really produced, but it was also his first (maybe 2nd full season)… but guys don’t hit .300 with 35+ HRs and 100+ RBIs by accident
If you know you’re going to lose Madson next season anyway.. might as well get something in return.. and Ludwick is someone that has proved he can do it at this level, something you dont yet know about a prospect
December 9th, 2008 at 10:36 am
“John Mozeliak now seems open to a two or three-year deal for a reliever. He could trade an outfielder like Ryan Ludwick for a top guy, but shot down the idea of Ryan Madson. Makes no sense, Madson is only under team control for one more year. Schumaker and Chris Duncan are trade bait for Mozeliak.”
-MLB Trade Rumors
December 9th, 2008 at 10:38 am
Inquirer is reporting that Randy Wolf may be on the Phils list. I hope they are kidding.
December 9th, 2008 at 10:39 am
it may be wise to make the move…i just dont think theyll do it…i mean…you have to limit the amount of times you deal with boras, and theyre already talking with him about lowe..
December 9th, 2008 at 10:41 am
I would trade any one of relievers for Ludwick in a heartbeat. I wouldn’t even have any second thoughts about it.
December 9th, 2008 at 10:44 am
Mozeliak is their GM I guess… Chris Duncan is pretty good too, but not at the cost of Madson
and he bats LH, and was out the second half of last season with a bad back.. so there is no chance we go after him
December 9th, 2008 at 10:45 am
Madson and Kendrick for Ludwick… get it done. I’m pretty sure that Ludwick is 1st year arbitration eligible (2 years of service), regardless he’ll be a cheap commodity for a while. Madson is gone after this year; he would go to St. Louis and become their closer. I think that Ludwick is going to be a stud. I would prefer Ludwick and Donald/Punto (while Chase is on the DL) than Derosa or Young… and I think that would be a cheaper alternative.
December 9th, 2008 at 10:49 am
One other key point… the other team involved in talks for Ludwick is Atlanta. They’re considering trading Kelly Johnson. If we offer Donald and Madson, I wonder if that gets it done.
December 9th, 2008 at 11:22 am
Ludwick is good, but he also hasn’t done anything consistently. He had A good year. Madson + Donald would be an unconscionably steep price for an outfielder who has a good season under his belt. Madson and a throw in is the way to do this deal, and that’s the only way I would really feel comfortable about it.
Don’t you guys remember how long it took us to lock down the 8th inning last year. Why would we want to go through that all over again.
Everybody is all worked up about the fact that Madson would be leaving after this year, but wouldn’t it behoove the Phillies to keep him if it meant another World Championship before he left instead?
December 9th, 2008 at 11:26 am
There are a plethora of set up men on the free agent market. Trade Madson and sign one of them.
December 9th, 2008 at 11:27 am
I also want to remind you all that all season Madson was dubbed 2 run Madson and other names to bash him, even though all season I said Madson is good this year, and now noone wants to see him go. Let him go. Juan Cruz can get the job done.
December 9th, 2008 at 11:31 am
Madson wasn’t even out “Setup Man” until halfway through September… Only then did Manuel give him the ball everytime in that situation instead of playing matchups… and Madson did a great job, and won himself a closer role next year unless he completely blows up this year..
December 9th, 2008 at 11:45 am
madson for ludwick would be amazing…even if you had to throw in kendrick i love it. get a great bat for the outfield for dirt cheap money for the next few years…take the loot you would have spent on a leftfielder and sign wood, fuentes or hoffman to replace madsen in the pen…god this trade would be so awesome…still leaves lot of offseason budget left to ink lowe since one of those bullpen guys prob wont cost more than5-6 per year
December 9th, 2008 at 11:49 am
If we can get it done, I think it makes a lot of sense. I love Madson, but it’s common knowledge that he is gone after this year. Ludwick fills our need for righthanded hitting OF and is extremely cheap–he doesn’t become a FA until 2012. We get a lot more mileage out of him than out of Madson. The question is how much would we have to give up in addition to Madson.
December 9th, 2008 at 12:02 pm
if its donald and madsen i think thats alot…wouldnt rule it out completely though since donald wont make his impact til either howard leaves and utley moves or if they want him to play third but you have feliz for two more years who i like for his great glove…madsen and kendrick and i do it in a second…ludwick is a nasty hitter with pop to all fields
December 9th, 2008 at 1:14 pm
get this deal done… Madson is flying high right now, and ludwick has a great bat!! Throw in Kendrick if need be.
December 9th, 2008 at 2:37 pm
There can’t be a Madson for Ludwick deal. the phillies would be nuts not to jump on that, Madson of what I have seen folds as a closer, only last miracle year did he have success. You can find a replacements for madson a guy who throws hard for one inning. They have one in the minors now Swimmer is like that Knapp is another but two years away Drabek has a chance too .
