Phils Share $18M For World Series Win

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Tue, December 02, 2008 09:32 PM

The Phillies earned $18.4 million for winning the 2008 World Series, according to Bloomberg News.

From the article:

Members of the Phillies will get $351,504.48 each for defeating the Tampa Bay Rays in Major League Baseball’s championship round in October.

Philadelphia players awarded 45 full shares, partial shares totaling just over seven full payments, and 15 cash bonuses. Club employees such as trainers and scouts are often recipients of shares in addition to players.

The 2007 Red Sox received $18.9 million, because slightly larger ballpark capacities in the World Series means slightly more money.

that’s a nice chunk of change… to me, not them. i’m just glad my season tickets went up in price.

  2. Fran Says:

why dont they invest all that money in signing CC sabathia?

  3. Baseball Brendan Says:

They earned it. I hope Adam Eaton didn’t get a penny!

  4. Ryk Says:

Doing some quick math, and using approximations, that could save $4.50 per seat each game next year. 18.4 million divided by 81 games divided by appx 50000 seats. Nice to know the millionaires have some more pocket change and the people who spend money to watch them have to spend even more now.

  5. Ryk Says:

Using more exact seating numbers, our savings could have been $5.22 per seat. So if you own 2 season tickets, you could have saved almost $900 bucks if they would have used this money to reduce seat prices. I’m not an idiot, so I know that this would NEVER happen, but imagine the happy fans. Hell, $4.50 can almost buy you a beer.

  6. Rick Says:

Tim – I’m not sure where you are coming up with the larger ballpark capacity = more $$$ for the Rat Sox in 2007.

I don’t think Fenway holds anywhere near 46,000 as CBP does. As for Colorado vs. Tampa Bay parks, I’m not sure how they measure up. I would suspect the cramped confines of Fenway alone would average out to less capacity between it and Colorado vs. CBP and the Trop. No?

  7. Groty Says:

    That’s great for these guys!

    Cole Hamels – $500,000
    Shane Victorino – $480,000
    Chris Snelling – $450,000
    Kyle Kendrick – $445,000
    Greg Dobbs – $440,000
    Carlos Ruiz – $425,000
    Clay Condrey – $420,000
    Chris Coste – $415,000
    Rudy Seanez – $400,00

  8. Rick Says:

    Nevermind! Correct you are!

Tropicana Field seems cavernous and seems like it can hold way more people than the 41,000 advertised after they opened the upper level during the playoffs. Coors Field holds >50000. Fenway = 36,108 and CBP = 43500.

  9. psujoe Says:

The money went to the players, not the organization. The Phillies made over $30 million on this years playoff run and that’s a conservative number.

  10. Georgie Says:

The players who are already making millions should donate their share to the CBP/Phillies employees, can you imagine what a few extra thousand dollars would mean to people less fortunate? Or give it to a charity, which I’m sure some of them will do.

  11. Groty Says:

    @ Georgia

They did work a lot of overtime for that ;-)

  12. mike Says:

Red Sox played more games didn’t they and there park only holds 35.000 I think.
