Chipper Jones Whining Again
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Sat, January 03, 2009 11:00 AM
In an interview with Sporting News, Chipper Jones vents frustration with the natural order of things in the National League East:
“We won for 14 consecutive years, and you never, ever saw any bulletin board material. And now that these two teams are on top of the division, they can’t keep their mouths shut. Just go play baseball. It’s Cole Hamels now. It was Jimmy Rollins and Carlos Beltran the past couple of springs. These two teams are constantly going at each other verbally. You know, win with class, lose with class. Just keep your mouth shut and go play your game.”
Wait, hold on … let me find something …
“The first pitch to me with the bases loaded was in my batter’s box, inside. Now you tell me how I’m supposed to hit that. We have to get Questec here in this ballpark. We’ve got to. Umpires have got to be held accountable. That’s Little League World Series stuff right there.”
Shoot, last year he responded to Phillies-Mets jabs:
“I really don’t care what’s being said. The Phillies and the Mets know we’ll be competitive. They know we’ll be heard from.”
Always one for a quote, that Chipper.
Seriously, I want to like him. I want to like what he says because — most of the time — he speaks with eloquence and intelligence for the game. But then he dips into Phillies-Mets stuff, and he just comes off like he’s angry that his team can’t compete. The point is the Phils and Mets can jab at each other because they win, because they’re good teams. Heck, it’s not even constant. It’s two published quotes in the last month. Two!
I absolutely respect that the Braves won a slew of consecutive titles, but that’s done, and now there’s a natural, hot rivalry in the NL East. Who cares what they say? You want to win, Chipper? Win the games. Or funnel some of your money to get a better bullpen for your team.

Oh, Larry. Always good for this stuff from Atlanta, though Smoltz usually is the one whining the most.
January 3rd, 2009 at 12:23 pm
Chipper, shut your yap and spend 40 games on the DL again next season, like always.
January 3rd, 2009 at 12:52 pm
Chipper is bitter because the Braves will not be able to compete with us as they have too many holes in their lineup and staff. And he is bitter because the Braves won only 1 WS in that awesome 14 yr stretch run. I guarantee that if the baseball gods will allow us to go on a 14 year run (two down) we will win more than one WS.
I always hated Chipper Jones. In fact I never got along with people named Chip or Chipper especially because, “Well, we named him that because he is a chip off the ole’ block and too much like his old man.” I always hated people who called their dads old men too. Chipper can burn in the swarming Atlanta heat with 20 fans watching him while CBP will be sold out even to see the Pirates play!
January 3rd, 2009 at 1:24 pm
Like it or not, Lawrence, one of the reasons no one cares is because no one’s met an actual Braves fan. It’s hard to have a rivalry when I’ve never seen a Braves fan in our ballpark. Sell out a playoff game and then we can talk.
January 3rd, 2009 at 1:26 pm
Oh, and even the Nationals had a better record in 08 against the Phils than the 4-14 Bravos.
January 3rd, 2009 at 1:42 pm
too bad Chipper only won 1 WS, same amout as the Phillies, because the Braves choked so many times in them 14 years
January 3rd, 2009 at 2:34 pm
the braves choked so bad in the late 90’s with losses to marlins and padres.
January 3rd, 2009 at 4:42 pm
Chipper’s crying, or should I say the Great Kazoo, he’s missing Fred and Barney, no Ted Turner money left in Atl, so the Squaws, can’t compete, well the Phils better take a good look cause unless they spend some of their cash the Nationals are gonna be ahead of the Phils in the standings soon
January 3rd, 2009 at 5:18 pm
What the hell? Is that English?
January 3rd, 2009 at 5:38 pm
there you guys go again. Showing how classless you are. Especially you Tim, who wrote this blog. He was not whining. He was asked a question, and he answered it with honesty and compassion. Who can argue with him when he said, teams should win with class and lose with class. Something the Phillies and their fans cant seem to do. This same exact story was posted on a mets blog (metsmerizedonline.com) and all the Mets fans could do was agree with him and say that he is correct and they gave him respect. And if anyone would have a reason to hate Chipper its the Mets fans. That just shows you how Mets fans have more class than you guys. Chipper’s whining again? wtf Tim, he was speaking the truth, you big dumby. He wasnt whining
January 3rd, 2009 at 5:51 pm
I can’t wait for April when Shane Victorino gets to shut Larry “Chipper” Jones the hell up, again. Maybe we’ll win another 8 games in Atlanta this year. And why the hell does he still prefer to be called “Chipper?” I mean come on, a forty year old man named Chipper? And judging by his comments and the 4th place finish the Bravos had last year, i’d say he’s anything but… well, Chipper.
January 3rd, 2009 at 5:52 pm
‘Chipper Moans’… Don’t you think Braves fans have go to the point where their more interested in hearing Jones say he’s able to stay healthy than hear his opinions now…
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:13 pm
Chipper is just upset cause the Phillies replaced the braves in the mets rivalry, now the braves are a joke and can barely stay above .500
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:17 pm
First of all, Cole Hamels didnt come out and call the mets choke artists. It was suggested by evan roberts, and cole agreed with him saying that yes, they have been choke artists the past couple of years, but then backed that up with how everyone thought the mets were the best team in 2006. there was no malice intended. it was taken out of context.
Jimmy could have worded his response better, but he answered honestly. How do you think the phils look this year? I think we’re the team to beat. Not that big of a deal.
The always quiet Carlos Beltran then tried to stir things up, because clearly, the mets need someone to be a leader. Chipper just doesnt understand anything about a rivalry, because there is no arch rival in Atlanta. The Phils and Mets are two teams that battle it out, they are only what? 75 miles away from each other. So we have met fans in philly stirring it up and vice versa.
Don’t worry Chippy, nobody’s forgotten about the braves, you need your press too. But it’s understandable being upset after losing out on Peavy and then snubbed by Furcal. Hudson’s out with Tommy John, Smoltz may not be the same, Glavine might retire, what have you got? A great catcher, a decent SS, Chipper, some young maybe decent pitching, and maybe a healthy bullpen which could be sick (mike gonzalez, rafael whatever, and maybe smoltz closes). not a lot of hope and promise when teams that were better than you last year only got better.
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:14 pm
You guys are absurd. Chippers right here. THey were better and more dominate then either of us are now and the writer for this blog seems to forget that there was a huge rivalry between the mets and braves and this stupid trash talking did not occur. I ahte the braves way more then the phillies.why because two years i should care about what happened rather then 14.please.the phillies were way worse then what the braves are now. get over yourselves.
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:28 pm
First, the Mets-Braves rivalry is absurd, just from a standings perspective. The Mets had a three-year run of good play from 1998-2000. Let’s go from 1994 (the first year of the Braves in the East) to 1997 with Mets finishes:
1994 – 3rd place / 12.5 GB of Atlanta
1995 – 2nd place / 21 GB of Atlanta
1996 – 4th place / 25 GB of Atlanta
1997 – 3rd place / 13 GB of Atlanta
Sure, maybe the teams played hard against each other, and maybe they didn’t like each other, but that would just mean the rivalry was on par with Phils/Marlins. Wow. Big rivalry.
Second, Chipper has to understand context. New York and Philly fanbases HATE each other. We each think the other is arrogant, fat, lazy, stupid. It goes beyond baseball. It’s geography, it’s city sizes, and really, it’s a long-held big-brother adulation by Philadelphians. Sure, we hate NY (the Queens/Bronx/Staten Island/Brooklyn version, not Manhattan), but it’s cause we don’t have the clout of NY. I’m talking bigger scale there.
And Atlanta? Please. Have they had more than 20,000 devoted fans in the last 20 years? At least in the Atlanta area? No. Rivarlies go beyond the teams, they go to the fanbases, to the regions. And the class of these two regions (which, I admit, are not high) fuel the players to act the same. They know the words stir the pot.
Seriously, what’s the big deal about talking smack? It’s smack! No one is threatening anyone’s life. No one is talking bad about wives or mothers or whatever. It’s smack talk.
If Atlanta didn’t trash talk (I find that hard to believe, anyway, with Fred McGriff, John Smoltz, Greg Maddux, David Justice, etc.) then that’s them. It’s a different dynamic. That’s why it exists. And that’s why Chipper should know when to not speak, cause he sounds like a whiny bumpkin.
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:30 pm
hahahahaha, whatever mets2009. we dont have to get over ourselves, we just won the world series. you among all people have no business to talk shiiit on the phils. 3 meltdowns in a row, that aint no good. pedro was supposed to be the big prize, than beltran, than even wagner, and then santana! what do you have to show for it. CHOKE!!!!!!!!
we dont have to get over ourselves, it’s one of the perks of winning the World Series. For 5 months, we get total bragging rights, and then for the season we are still the champs until knocked out completely. thats when the bragging stops.
i should hope they were better than us now, they had 3 hall of fame pitchers all in one rotation. when was the last time that happened? the 1910s? come on. get off this site if you’re gonna talk nonsense.
January 3rd, 2009 at 10:41 pm
Another comical aspect of Chipper’s nonsense is that he implies that big-budget teams have some untouchable advantage over Atlanta…I must have missed the Marlins’ $200mil spending spree.
January 3rd, 2009 at 10:56 pm
It was classy the way we took 9-of-9 in Atlanta last year
January 3rd, 2009 at 11:19 pm
Tim,your nuts. You have to understand context. New Yorkers hate people from Boston. New Yorkers hate Braves Fans. Phillie fans hate New York. We can really give a hell about you guys. so w.e.
January 4th, 2009 at 12:13 am
Chipper’s best role was in Fargo.
January 4th, 2009 at 2:27 am
mets09 No, I think you’re wrong New York Yankee fans hate people from Boston, you Mets fans don’t count cause you’re team is just a replacement for the Dodgers and Giants, Lawerence “Chipper” Jones is a whiny little toad.
Omar Minaya said tonight on MLB Network he feels the Mets are big-market club, well ask the Wilpons if they want to invest in some ocean front property in Arizona.
January 4th, 2009 at 8:45 am
Hey Chipper, your “girlfriend” called and said it’s your turn to watch the kids, you can pick them up at Hooters at 3 pm.
January 4th, 2009 at 9:34 am
14 Straight DIvision Championships. ONE world series championship.
I think that success rate says everything there.
January 4th, 2009 at 9:59 am
AndrewR,lemme guess when you go to CBP with your glove, you think you are going to play don’t you.You can’t the Phillies won’t let you play. Now I have said this per nauseum, the Phils won the World Series, they were the better team in 2008 congrats. The 2009 Phillies and their fans better realise that there are 29 other teams who want what the Phillies have. The hunters have become the hunted, and now its time to see if they have the GUTS to repeat and make a name for themselves.
January 4th, 2009 at 12:17 pm
All champion teams make a name for themselves. No one remembers who finishes in 2nd place.
January 4th, 2009 at 12:45 pm
clktwr14 ,No your wrong, yes yankee fans hate Boston, but nerw york football fans hate the Patriots.Jets or Giants Fans. We hate the people from Boston, their accents.everything about Mass. So thatnks im actuallly from ‘new York
January 4th, 2009 at 1:00 pm
hey phillyhater you’re right, all 5 of those mets fans on that blog were pretty classy, especially this guy:
”
i dont hate the Braves and/or Chipper nowhere near as much as I hate everything about the Phillies.
Posted by: phillyhater | January 3, 2009 3:15 PM
”
the reason that the mets fans agree with chipper and the phillies fans think he’s a big whiny baby is because whenever any of our players say things like “team to beat”, we are usually right, and back it up by winning (plus what jimmy said was not meant as a “stick it to the mets” comment.) Guys like carlos beltran and K-Rod open their mouths and they sound like jealous copycat muckrakers. I was actually embarassed for mets fans and that idiot beltran when he said “to jimmy rollins: we are the team to beat”… real original buddy.
January 4th, 2009 at 1:28 pm
Nationals, I agree the Phillies backed up with what you said ,but if Jimmy Rollins didnt mean it to stick it to the mets then your dillusional. He knew what he was doing. And if you believe that then I can say for sure K-Rod just ment this is my team so we are the team to beat. have you ever been on a team where before the season starts you dont think you can win it all? didnt think so
January 4th, 2009 at 1:37 pm
I respect Chipper but I really don’t friggen care what he thinks. I also don’t care what Met’s fans think. Why is that, true believers? I’m a Phillies Phan and have been since I grew up in North Philly in the seventies. Granted, its very dangerous to visit my old neighborhood now and Vet Stadium is a memory.
A Gnat fan and/or player could sound off about how they are very good or somefink and I wouldn’t care. Media seeks out drama. All I know is that I visited Turner Field for an excellent game once. As the token Phillies Phan, it was my duty to do my drive by booing and taunting of the Braves and their fans. As their team lost, the white collar, affluent fans left in droves. I almost lost my voice taunting them and questioning their lineage, but I did my best.
While Chipper speaks from his anal orifice, I care more about what Charlie Manual thinks because after all, in Charlie we trust.
January 4th, 2009 at 1:45 pm
Obviously Matt….you are WRONG….Phillies fans like yourself remind us Amazins fans who was in 2nd.I don’t worry about it.Bigger fish to fry in this world.
January 4th, 2009 at 2:27 pm
k-rod wouldn’t have said it if jimmy rollins didn’t say it (and was right) and if carlos beltran didn’t say it (and was wrong). correct me if i’m wrong, but i’m pretty sure that the world champions automatically earn the privilege of being the team to beat
January 4th, 2009 at 2:35 pm
They may earn that privilege ,but what athlete believes that whos not on their team. Their are plenty of teams/players who feel they should have won and not to take away from the fact the Phillies just won it ,but they feel that this is the year now. Just like you felt last season and for the last 28 years.
January 4th, 2009 at 3:26 pm
To me its actually a good thing when these players talk trash….Dont you think it’s that much more interesting when the games start?
We need more predictions from Mut players,It just fires us up .
Say what you want about JRoll but he backed up his statements.and Hamels just agreed with a question he was asked.
January 4th, 2009 at 6:04 pm
Honestly with all this carp on who said this, which player said that “team to beat” or what team choked. I have just 5 words for the players, announcers, sports radio hosts, reporters and fans…”Shut up and play ball” and let the chips fall where they may.If any ones team wins like your Phillies did, only THEN,everyone should have the Wright to talk trash until knocked down from the pulpit. As for Larry “Legend”…I have 2 words for you;John Rocker.
January 4th, 2009 at 6:31 pm
Grumpy Miner, the only smart thing you said, ’shut up and play ball.’ And no, i dont go to the park with my glove. I did however play division 2 baseball (OF, P), and i’m pretty sure you weren’t anywhere near as good as me in your prime. so please, you probably havent played the game at any level higher than little league. there’s so much you dont know. just another armchair athlete. you sir, are pathetic.
January 4th, 2009 at 7:04 pm
First off andrew…You must be thrilled and honored about being in division 2 and feel a great sense of accomplishment really,I’m proud of you.I may not be sure about your education, but I am not sure you understand the word “Sarcasm”.Yup you got me,I lived a normal childhood and made little leagues.Felt great to grow up nornal like every kid and grow up to be a man with a son in the little leagues.Did the Mets spit the bit Yes they did, however I look at the reality of that and am gracious in defeat and can accept the Phillies winning,I have congratulated them many of times as well as the people who welcomed me,a METS
fan into this board incliding Tim and the countless other Phils fans. Now I can and have taken the heat and still come back for more.Theres such thing as being gracious in winning, but you are nothing more than a sore winner.Learn to accept fans of other teams have feelings too and NO don’t give me that carp that this isn’t a sunday school and/or if you don’t like whats said, leave.I’ve heard it in here b4 and you can’t get dismiss me that easily. Oh and once again congrats on The on Div2 baseball.Sincerely.
January 4th, 2009 at 7:29 pm
first off grumpy miner, i was unaware it was sarcasm. so i will hold back a little on being defensive. so i guess that’s my apology to you. secondly, i am a die-hard baseball fan first, and a die-hard philly fan second. i live in cental NJ and the only games i get are mets and yankees. i watch my phils on the computer with the mets on TV on most weeknights. My family and neighbors are met fans. i have to be tolerante of the mets, hell, i even have a mets #31 t-shirt (mike piazza is on the back, not cliff floyd).
i appreciate your honesty, and will be more respectful to your comments from here on in. i’ve been hitting some blogs this winter, and i usually come across assholes so it’s pretty cut-throat. i apologize for being one of the assholes.
January 4th, 2009 at 8:05 pm
No need for apologies…….we are true fans of baseball, thats the one reason I come in here compared to the Mets blog. The vast majority of the fans in here speak a good game while the Mets blog features such famous lines as “Insert Team Here”sucks and “Mets Rule”.I am a Mets fan and yet when they do good, they get cudos…after they showed no guts TWICE to the Marlins,I gave them the heat they deserved.I even called Aug.22 2008 the turning point when the Mets could have won 7-5 instead our poison pen tripped over their own 2 feet and the Phils won in 13 innings 8-7.That sole game cost the Mets at the very least a play in game vs the Brewers for the Wild Card. That night I tipped my cap to the Phils and Tim acknowledged it and appreciated that. Also if you are a constant blogger you KNOW how much I killed that inept poison pen we had and since then it was Upgraded and the waste is gone (Thank Goodness)
January 5th, 2009 at 11:05 am
I was out of pocket this weekend. I cannot believe the replies to this blog… I think that people need to take a step back and look at this for what it’s worth. Put your pride and dignity aside and look at Larry for what he really is. He’s a great player and a good competitor (the fact that he’s whining about a little trash talking is weak) with a huge “chip” on his shoulders. The writing has been etched into the wall; Chipper is on the wrong side of a franchise rebuilding. When that team was winning it was always about pitching. Now that the team is losing, it’s Chipper’s team. I think that he resents the current state of the NLE and his franchise for putting him in this situation. A little bit of media induced trash talking makes it interesting. When the Braves were winning pennants, there wasn’t much to be said because they were head and shoulders above everyone else… it’s tough to trash talk when you’re thrown into a pistol fight carrying a knife. The Braves were that good but they lacked what this current Phils team brings to the table when it matters… the thing that beats inside your chest and compels you to stand up for your team even when standing up for your team makes you sound arrogant.
January 5th, 2009 at 12:58 pm
Larry stop your whining…Then again you would look good in Phils uniform!!!
January 8th, 2009 at 2:00 am
Chipper Jones is one of the best switch hitters to ever play the game. He knows what he’s talking about and I don;t care what team you root for you would love to see Chipper playing for that team. And you guys say Chipper is whining…look at what every single one of you guys are doing..
August 23rd, 2009 at 1:42 am
great post, thanks for providing so much. Keep up the good posts.! http://www.hoover-f5914900.com
