Odds And Ends: Redding, Rollins
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Fri, January 09, 2009 06:50 PM
Odds and ends this Friday:
- The Mets have signed Tim Redding to a one-year, $2.25 million contract.
Redding dominated the Phillies in his first two starts against them in 2008, but the Phils beat the pulp out of him in the next two. Redding finished 2008 with a 4.98 ERA.
- Jimmy Rollins is being considered for a spot on Team USA in the World Baseball Classic.
Provisional 45-man rosters will be announced January 19, with final rosters of 28 players set by February 24.

I think Jimmy’s the one guy I would want to see from the Phillies in the WBC since it seems to take him awhile to get into form at the plate and facing top competition in March should help with that.
January 9th, 2009 at 7:14 pm
I thought it was already confirmed that Jimmy was splitting time with derek at SS?
January 9th, 2009 at 7:46 pm
i love jamie but this would have been a great signing for the back of the rotation, given that doesn’t this give us somewhat of a chance to sign lowe i mean hamels lowe myers blaton moyer sounds preety good too me

Some notes out of the Redding deal.First he stays in the NL East which might seem like his comfort zone in not having to change leagues.Mets are starting to stockpile starters in which was also a glaring problem for the last 3 years. If Mets can get Lowe or Perez OH and Pedro for long relief and emergency spot starter,Mets will be fine with pitching.Next is the line-up.
January 9th, 2009 at 8:24 pm
1. Between Tim Redding (2.25) and Chan Ho Park (2.5), who would you rather have? I’d go with the former.
2. Phillies could’ve EASILY done Redding and Lowe… instead of Moyer and Park….
January 9th, 2009 at 8:37 pm
That said, I would’ve been extremely happy with just Lowe (as you all probably know).

easily done Redding and Lowe instead of Moyer and Park… Funny, there’s a reason Lowe’s still a FA and Redding is a massive health risk.
If the Braves do go to years as has been rumored Oli Perez is REALLY lucky (and Scott Boras in-turn). He really had no other suitors the going back to the Mets which is what’ll happen if Lowe doesn’t sign there. Really didn’t think the Braves would aggressively go after Lowe but makes sense for them.
There are better options than Redding left on the market and no-ones getting ‘the kwan’ at this point.

I dunno what Dierkes is talking about on MLBTR, but if the braves sign kawakami then theyre out of the mix for lowe. now that the mets have signed redding, theyll sign oliver perez and be done. so lowe is left hanging again. boras is trying to stall so lowe can sign first but the mets preempted that by singing their righty starter, now they need a lefty, which will either be randy wolf or oliver perez.
pedro martinez will go to the pirates while the braves will be happy getting kawakami and vasquez. unless the nationals make a slate suprise bid for lowe the phillies will have all the leverage there.
January 10th, 2009 at 12:03 am
tim redding sucks…just because he shut down the phillies a few times everyone thinks hes somehow worth signing….let me tell you, this guy would have an ERA over 5 in our ballark.
January 10th, 2009 at 1:31 am
Geoff, Lowe is not going to the Phils. He may go to the Braves, but I have a feeling the Mets wont let him get away. If Oliver Perez signs elsewhere, the Mets would get draft picks back. Lowe/Wolf + draft picks > Perez. And even though Lowe is a righty, I think its more important to get a good pitcher than specifically get a lefty. I think that the Mets are done with Perez. If they miss out on Lowe, it wont be to the Phils, and they will probably move on to Wolf, not Perez. I know it may not be what you want to hear, but this is your pitching staff.
January 10th, 2009 at 2:48 am
This Redding move is simply a chance to get like 3 guys in the 5th,6th,7th spots. Some may become relievers, others to the minors. The Mets want to use Neice ,but to just hand him the 5th spot would be rediculous. there will be a battle. As far as Park vs Redding, Redding is definently better. I think the Mets will still get Lowe because they really want Neice in the fifth spot and hes a lefty. If the braves offer 4 years, or even five let them have him.
January 10th, 2009 at 3:02 am
If the Mets get Perez (more likely now that they got Redding), and the Braves go after Kawakami… guess where Derek Lowe is likely to end up? That’s right, the Phillies!
(And cheap!)
January 10th, 2009 at 5:12 am
david….liver perez wont sign until after lowe sings…thats how this all works..boras controls both…he knows the best market for perez will come AFTER lowe signs. so its best for his client to wait for derek lowe to sign. the mets will sit and watch as lowe signs elsewhere….um, tim redding really sucks…the phillies wont use park as a starter and no real fan think that they will…we may not know s much about niese but from what i saw he isnt ready. happ was up for more than half the season. hes ready. niese needs to start out in AAA then move up at he first sign of trouble to come to the rescue. when niese comes up for good, he needs to be power. thats why the phillies are not ruishing carrasco. same situation. top pitching prospect of the future (happ is the top prospect of today….) NO need to rush it and waste the guy. wait until he is power…calm…control…and then bring him up to change the landscape of the mets rotation. no before…the phillies and mets hsould and i think iwll both wait until those guys are each ready before cuytting them loose. niese needs a year..carrasco needs half a year to a year. just get through that. redding gets them through a year, and perez does too. no, the mets will not sign lowe. niever will the braves. unless one of those teams acts rashly lowe is ours and ours at OUR price ,and theres nothing scott boras can do about it. because i think if he doesnt fall into line and submit then he will be blackballed and his expensive clients will be forced to either fire him or play in japan. furhtoremore!!! any team that breaks that and signs one of his expensive guys the owners have set a price lmit for will be punished severely by other owners in terms of trading… hey its here, and im ok with it…collusion is the only thing short of a salary cap that will control player salaries…
January 10th, 2009 at 11:34 am
If the reports are true and the Braves really do want Lowe then that’s the ballgame and if your the Phillies unless you can sign someone to a minor-league deal then you go into Spring with whats already on the table. I think the only person hoping a deal goes down smoothly for Lowe more than Wren is Oliver Perez who can salvage a half decent contract to return to the Mets. Redding is high risk high reward guy and I do think the Mets are being a little short sighted with the other guys left on the table, he could turn in a stellar campgain but this one was pretty good for him and the Nats didn’t tender him because of his health so Mets fans beware.
For us there really isn’t much point signing another starter your commiting a place to on the 25-man roster for. Garland, Looper, Byrd might be security but if you can’t upgrade at the front for a moderate cost then you’ve got trust Happ can pitch to near if not a higher level than those guys mentioned. That said I still believe if Lowe signs with the Mets you can get Perez at such a reduced number it would be worth making the deal.
Think it’s good Rollins is in for the WBC from a Phils perspective, he needs to hit the ground running for next year.
January 10th, 2009 at 12:22 pm
Are we really interested in Nomar?? You can always hold a bench spot open for pure novelty factor…
January 10th, 2009 at 12:30 pm
I respect the hell out of Jeter both for his on and off the field accomplishments. However, J-Roll is clearly the better SS at this point in time both offensively and defensively. Jeter is considered one of the worst defensive SS now because of lack of range and while his stats are still productive he isn’t quite the cataylst Rollins is to a lineup.
If the goal is to completely market the WBC then Jeter’s name is obviously more known on an international level. But if Davey Johnson wants to win, Rollins has to be your everyday starting SS. Winning will get the fans interested over time, not losing to other countries who beat us at our own game.
Here is to Davey Johnson going for the win instead of satisfying the Selig and the corporate drones in the NY offices.

Geoff…
“the mets will not sign lowe. niever will the braves. unless one of those teams acts rashly lowe is ours and ours at OUR price ,and theres nothing scott boras can do about it.”…what the hell are you talking about? First, why wont the mets or braves sign lowe? They are the only two teams to show any real interest and/or make any type of offers. The Phils havent made any official offer yet at all, and there are mixed reports as to whether they have ANY interest at all. Yet you think that lowe will sign with the Phils at your price? What is YOUR price exactly? It must be more than 36 mill for 3 years since the mets already offered that. It must be more than whatever the braves will be offering next week. Your delusional if you think the Phils will get Lowe at this point. The mets and braves would both have to either drop out of the running for no good reason, or, the Phils would have to come out of nowhere with a much better offer that neither the braves nor mets top. And at this point, there is no indication that the Phils are seriously interested, let alone interested enough start blowing people away with offers. Put down the koolaid, lay off the marijuana, lowe will not be a Phil. Its Hamels, Myers, Blanton, Moyer, Park/Happ. Get over it.
