    First Post for me, I usually just read but have been doing so for awhile. Been subscribed to the RSS feed and get a text message every time the site is updated.

    Verizon is weird with the mobile version, but loads the normal site fine (eventually).

    Keep up the good work.

    I’ve been coming to this site for about three years now, and next to the official phils page, this is the best one on the net. Thanks guys for keeping me informed and allowing me to vent my joy/anger/frustration/sadness over the past three years.

    More than anything its a place where we can all have decent conversations, bounce ideas off one another, and its usually filled with people that really know their baseball.. I got addicted to this early this past season, used to listen to WIP or ESPN radio at work, but now this is my non work related activity that gets me through the day..

    Thanks to the guys that run it, and for the rest of you for posting interesting stuff!

    Since finding this site mid last year…I find out more info here than anywhere else .Its funny,when I watch the guys on comcast ,they give info that I already picked up here.Go Phils.Cant wait till spring training.

    Like Kevin and Richie Allen, I found this site mid-last year, right after leaving Philly and moving to DC. It’s a great way to stay informed and updated. Thank you Brian, Rob, Tim and everyone else involved…

    I have not been watching ESPN at all, for a while now… which is GREAT!. …. I still like Baseball Tonight, but in general I stopped watching that because I liked CSN better, and now, I already know what they are going to say before they say thanks to this site..

    I used to love the Hot Stove stuff, and hearing which team was interested in which players, or who the “Experts” thought would be the best teams, or whatever..

    But they don’t know anymore than we do.. and I’d rather listen to somebody that just loves the Phillies say who or what they want for the Phillies.. than to listen to Ken Rosenthal, Bill Conlin, and Fernando Vina.

    I can’t even remember when I started posting on here, but now I obviously do it too much.. its addictive

    I like HotStove on MLBN, DNL is ok…i hate espn for all sports so theyre almost always banned unless i have to watch it for some reason…

    bill conlin is the most negative person ive ever seen in my life…hes a mean old man…olney and steve phillips and a couple other guys are almost always wrong…rosenthal is probably the most accurate followed by verducci then gammons/heyman…zolecki was a good beat writer though…

    Aaron Heilman traded to the Cubs for Garrett Olson (the guy the Cubs got for Felix Pie) and Ronny Cedeno.

    So good news for the Phillies, they’ll still have 6 games to beat up Heilman this year.

    The Cubs just got fleeced for Heilamnn and the new Seattle GM seems to be feasting on the power hungry teams. Also $7m guaranteed for Garland, not terrible but the D-Backs must be wondreing what all that talk about a bad economy is all about…

    Well the Cubs have had a weird offseason. They unloaded Derosa for basically nothing, they let Wood walk and they traded Jose Ceda, a very good prospect, for one year of Kevin Gregg. They dumped Jason Marquis’ salary on the Rockies and picked up Luis Vizcaino.
    Garrett Olson isn’t a high upside pitcher and Cedeno is a utility player, but Heilman isn’t anything to write home about.

    To be honest, I dont know what the Cubs are doing this offseason…theyve had a terrible offseason. They gave up a solid character/superutility man in derosa for guys ive never heard of. they traded a good prospect for kevin gregg who is garbage and then traded a few decent prospects for aaron heilman who is garbage. they let kerry wood walk, replace him with marmol whos VERY good and have samardzjia as a good setup man. but then bring in straight GARBAGE to ruin their bullpen in gregg and heilman..they trade marquis for a TERRIBLE reliever in vizcaino…and theyre tring to trade rich hill as well…so outside of overpaying for milton bradley theyve traded young cheap guys for older crappier more expensive guys…theyre VERY desperate and i am really not sure what hendry is attmpting to do….

    they still have a potentially good rotation but their bullpen is now all filled up with total slop junk leading up to the 8th inning. their line up has ONE good power hitter who doesnt hit righty in bradley, and then a bunch of OVERRATED right handed hitters who choke in the playoffs…derrick lee, alfonso soriano…soto is very good but still young…

    i see a lot of overhyped players who espn worships that havent done anything in the playoffs in a long time…

    1 year/$6.25 mil with a $2 mil buyout for or a $10 mil option for ‘10. So it’s basically a 1 year/$8.25 million deal. That is more than I thought he’d get, but it’s only a one year deal

    I’m surprised the D-Backs let Randy Johnson go, who signed a 1 year/$8 million deal with the Giants.
    I’d rather have Randy Johnson than Jon Garland.

    You have to wonder what is going on with the Cubs… all of their moves have made very little sense to me. I’m waiting for the bomb to drop…

    Let us recap…

    Step one, Marmol to closer. No offer to Wood. Traded Ceda for Gregg… Ceda/Wood/Marmol > Gregg/Marmol… not even close.

    Step two, trade Derosa for 3 minor league pitchers and sign Aaron Miles… swapping Derosa for Miles, they free up a little bit of salary space (about $2 million) but now they don’t have a dependable starting 2B in 2009… either Fontenot or Miles has to start… neither of which are on the same level as Mark Derosa. Derosa (and $2 million) > Miles & 3 MiL P

    Step three, dump salary to pick up an OF… traded Marquis for Vizcaino… Marquis won 11 games and his 4.5 ERA is not great but playing at Wrigley, it’s not terrible either (his ERA on the road is 4.12). Plus, now they don’t have a bona fide 5th starter. They’ll be relying on Marshall… young and talented but untested. Bradley is good… I still don’t see how they can rely on Marshall; in 7 GS, he only went 7 innings once. Marquis > Vizcaino, Bradley

    Pie/Cedeno for Heilman… after trading Felix Pie for Garret Olson (which made sense because of their starter issues), they turn around and trade Olson and Cedeno for Heilman. So it ends up Pie/Cedeno for Heilman. Neither player (Pie/Cedeno) had great years in 2008 but Pie was highly touted and Cedeno really absolutely GREAT at times last year… is Heilman and his 4.5 ERA worth two very good prospects?

    They traded one good reliever (Wood) for three mediocre bullpen guys. They traded a good starting 2B for a good backup and a few minor league starting pitchers that won’t even be able to fill in when either Harden or Zambrano inevitably goes down (which they will). Marshall was their spot starter this year but he’ll have to be their #5. Their are a lot of question marks. But then again, they’re still talking about Jake Peavy.

    Chuck P, long post, but well-written. I’m thinking the Cubs are going to make a push for Peavy because otherwise, their moves so far just don’t make sense.

    Cubs have been positioning themselves to get Peavy or some other big gun once their sale goes through. If they don’t get Peavy, I’d be surprised (why else would they get the minor leaguers that the Padres want). I also think that Sheets is hoping that they don’t get Peavy and he can swoop in during ST and get a fat 2-3 yr deal when they get desperate — why else would he not go back to the Brewers and prove he;s healthy so he can get the big contract next year (unless he’s not actually healthy).

    When Peavy moves, I think the Phillies might be able to talk SD into taking Eaton (as long as the Phils pay 5+ million of his salary), Park (probably not since he’s the best suioted to come out of the pen) or Kendrick (who they’d get the best prospects for).

    That’s interesting, Chris… do you think that it would be Eaton and a draft pick/prospect for a prospect or do you think that they’ll be willing to take Eaton because they’ll need ML starters this year (while prospects mature) and leave it at that? We certainly have the young arms to work something out with them but what will we get in return besides a little bit of cap space? It’s interesting, nonetheless.

    Chuck – The Phils would have to get something only because a team can’t just give players away but it wouldnt be much, the actual gain would just be the money savings that they would get. The fact that Eaton has pitched not horribly at Petco might give them reason to give him a chance as their #4/5 especially with their lack of depth of experience – the only thing Eaton has done while a Phil is avoid true injury (I think most of us believe his 07 DL visit was not exactly dire)

    I still think that I would rather see Peavy rot away in San Diego… I would hate to see the Cubs trotting out Peavy, Zambrano, Harden, Lilly, Hill in a best of 5 series!
