Beltran wants Mets to ‘kill’ Cole Hamels
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Wed, February 18, 2009 12:20 PM
Carlos Beltran spoke to reporters in Port St. Lucie, and offered this quote about Cole Hamels, who was baited into agreeing that in the past two seasons, the Mets have been choke artists:
“The only thing that I know is he will be watched every time he faces us. Hopefully we kill him, and then he’ll have to deal with the situation.”
And as the world turns …

here you go Tim, being that you’re so consumed with Mets, along with the rest of “Phillies Nation” heres some more stuff to chew on…..let me guess, the first few post will be about the grammer, because thats normally a sign that you cant beat what he says, so why not get on him becuase of his grammer right guys…lol..
Jose Reyes was his usually bubbly self in the clubhouse this morning and wasn’t even fazed by the plan to move him down from the leadoff spot. What irritated Reyes the most was the Phillies’ offseason comments, and Cole Hamels calling the Mets “choke artists.”
“I don’t know why they always focus on us. They are the ones to win the world series. We don’t say nothing about them. We just say congratulatiosn to the phillies. They always say something about us and we don’t even focus on them. We focus on them when we play against them.
“We don’t worry about the Phillies – we focus about the New York Mets,” Reyes said. “They have to be happy because they win the World Series. Why do they focus on us? What did we do to them? If they don’t like us, that’s OK.”
Reyes also was surprised when he learned that the Phillies put a photo of him in Shane Victorino’s locker during the playoffs last October. Victorino’s teammates were accusing him of styling too much after a home run against the Dodgers and they considered it an insult to be compared to Reyes.
“I heard that,” Reyes said.”I don’t know why they said that because I’m not the only when I hit a home run that I ‘pimp’ it. A lot of people do that. A lot of people from Philadelphia too. They stand there for a couple seconds and nobody say nothing. I don’t know why the Phillies focus so much on the New York Mets. We just worry about us.”
As for hitting somewhere else in the lineup, that’s fine with Reyes. He’s buying into Manuel’s team-first attitude.
“I’m here to do whatever they want me to do,” Reyes said. “People call me and say im not going to lead off anymore but I;m here to help this team win. no matter where they put me – third, second, fourth, fifth, whatever. I’m here to play baseball and help this team win a championship.”
February 18th, 2009 at 12:26 pm
sorry forgot to mention that that piece was from Newsday in New York…
February 18th, 2009 at 12:26 pm
I don’t think that even the Melts themselves believe what spews out of their mouths anymore. Hey, did you hear they’re the team to beat???
February 18th, 2009 at 12:31 pm
sorry, that’s a bitch move, reyes. “what did we do to them?” it’s called a rivalry, buddy. and the mets are focused on us just as much as we are them. that’s what happens when you have a head to head situation like this, and it’s fine. but he’s sounding hypocritical while the rest of the two teams are trashtalking and he’s claiming his team isn’t.
February 18th, 2009 at 12:32 pm
“here you go Tim, being that you’re so consumed with Mets, along with the rest of “Phillies Nation” heres some more stuff to chew on…..let me guess, the first few post will be about the grammer, because thats normally a sign that you cant beat what he says, so why not get on him becuase of his grammer right guys…lol..”
No, not grammar, but spelling. Just learn how to spell “grammar” and “because.”
February 18th, 2009 at 12:34 pm
LOL…I love it, feelings are getting hurt….lol…i actually havent seen one trash talk from the Mets this year!!! im sorry to say but reyes is right?? you guys started with the choke artist, pinning shit in mini me’s locker…..cmon dude, the mets do dont any of that shit….they ask us who do you think is better and we just say….US….thats it….but keep it up guys, mets will beat on that ass a lil more this year same way we did last year head to head…
February 18th, 2009 at 12:35 pm
Or how they were the team to beat the past 2 years. Who is beltran has he even showed up to play?
February 18th, 2009 at 12:38 pm
well beltran is just saying the same thing…i know the philies have a “Killer mentality” when they face the Mets right??? so whats wrong with the mets having that same killing mentality??
February 18th, 2009 at 12:38 pm
It seems these mets fans have a “big brother” complex when it comes to phils. How else do you explain these trolls….
February 18th, 2009 at 12:44 pm
WORLD CHAMPIONS OF BASEBALL.
February 18th, 2009 at 12:44 pm
Tim and Phillies Nation aren’t “consumed with the Mets”. They are our rivals. And how is it that we are we so focused on them when Radio hosts from NY bait our ace into saying something? It’s so they can stir the pot in NY, now you have Beltran talking. Sounds like NY are the ones who are “Consumed with the Phils”
February 18th, 2009 at 12:49 pm
Reyes is sounding a bit more meek these days. Plus, it’s one thing to stand and admire a home run for a second and it’s another to perform a different secret handshake for each player in the dugout when you hit an homerun in the second inning of an exhibition game like Reyes does. What, does he have a tree fort that requires you to know a secret handshake? Judging by the guys in that locker room, there is certainly a “No Girls Allowed” sign hanging outside.
February 18th, 2009 at 12:49 pm
…and c’mon, in addition to Cole, everyone in baseball, sports, sitcoms, late night talk shows, knows that the Mets are choke artists. Why isn’t Jose Reyes commenting on the Daily Show? If the shoe fits, boys.

World Phucking Champs
February 18th, 2009 at 12:57 pm
ok, but let’s hold on one sec… i live NY as a phils fan and almost all of these guys are baited… beltran was baited into the question as he sat in the dugout, and you can see on his face that he had no intention of even dealing with it. He smiled and laughed when he said the part about “killing” hamels… and really, hamels is a big mouth, but he was baited by those douches on WFAN. Hamels should learn to keep it shut, but honestly, he seems the type to use the backlash as motivation.
and Tim, i’m from and live in NY and i’m quite proud of my spelling and grammar. Those issues are specific to met fans, i assure you.
February 18th, 2009 at 1:01 pm
just ignore those stupid mut fans… fortunately not all of them are that stupid and stuck up… i have quite a few friends who lik the muts but they are all good ppl… so those who offer good insight are ok, those who are idiots and can’t accept that we’re WORLD PHUCKIN CHAMPS, ignore them… as for reyes, ignore it… when he hones his potential and stops acting lik a baby, then i’ll show him some respect and attention

February 18th, 2009 at 1:03 pm
I agree Todd, Beltran was baited.
Speaking of NY Media: In A Rod’s conference yesterday, did anyone here the report ask him what he thought about Moyer’s comments? What the reporter stated as Moyer’s comments, were not really Moyer’s comments at all. The reporter should have had the quote in front of him if he was going to ask a question like that. He kind of threw Moyer under the bus with innacurate information.
February 18th, 2009 at 1:08 pm
he didnt say the quote verbatim but moyer did say how could you vote a guy into the hall of fame who did steroids…which is what the roporter said to arod…ha…spelling
February 18th, 2009 at 1:08 pm
Hey all you muts fans!
Do any of you own a NLCS shirt or hat or anything?
I think the answer is no
Do you muts own any shirts or hats with The World Series Logo on it?
Better yet what about a jersey and a hat with the Worls Series Patch?
I dont think so

February 18th, 2009 at 1:22 pm
Met fans are the dumbest fans in baseball. It’s hard to put in words how unbelievably stupid you are.
February 18th, 2009 at 1:23 pm
In the begining when J-roll made them statements, it was fun! I honestly think it helped us get where we got…But for Hamels (out of all people) to open his mouth, that really pissed me off. I thought Hamels had more class than that, sorry! All were doing is putting BIG target on our backs. We won the WS, cheerish that sh*t and focus on doing it again….Who cares about the Mets? We don’t have to play the Mets 162 games.
February 18th, 2009 at 1:28 pm
On hamels behalf those words were put into his mouth. The question was something like, “After seeing the mets choke the past 2 seasons would you say that they are choke artist?” How else is he supposed to answer that question? Something like “No, they just blow big time”?
February 18th, 2009 at 1:28 pm
Yawn. I’m getting tired of all this talk. The rivalry is boring till there’s baseball to be played.
February 18th, 2009 at 1:30 pm
I wonder if Beltran plans on highlighting his hair again. I remember the first time I saw him take his helmet off and saw that, I was disgusted, then I laughed at what a douche he looked like. It was horrible looking.
Like it is said over and over, the Mets are a group of talented players, but they are not a team.
February 18th, 2009 at 1:32 pm
I second that, Evan.
February 18th, 2009 at 1:33 pm
the rivalry is boring because it’s a clear media bullshit, a fabrication. Notice how players from both teams keep asking, “why do they keep talking about us?” Well, because the media keeps asking about the other team. The red sox and yankees have gotten a little stale, so this is the new focus. It’s always going to be NY and someone, the yanks are a circus these days, the mets are more entertaining.
February 18th, 2009 at 1:34 pm
The New York City is better than Philadelphia argument always gets me. Yes, New York is a great city. I’m willing to bet that 99% of you don’t live there but rather some dump like Long Island, or Bergen County, NJ, or West Chester. You’re not even New York City’s team. The Yankees are.
Additionally, have you walked five feet out of the Shea / Citi Field parking lot into Little Puerto Rico with your chop shops and disgusting slobs sitting on lawn chairs in alleyways drinking Hurricane tall-boys while a mixture of car fluid, piss and sewer water runs underfoot?
Guiliani tricked you all into thinking you lived in a classy city with your quality of life laws 10 years ago. NYC used to be where we went when we wanted to buy drugs and lap dances.
February 18th, 2009 at 1:34 pm
I HOPE THERES A BRAWL THIS YR!
WHO’D WIN?
after putz beans j roll in the 8th inning of a game at citi, j roll runs after putz but delgado comes and BEATS THE CRAPPA OUTTA HIM! LOL
February 18th, 2009 at 1:36 pm
I love this rivalry, and I’m enjoying the trash talking back and forth. It’s just making me anxious for the season to start. In regard to Reyes though I think he should be able to recognize the difference between celebrating a homerun and the 10 minute rain dances he like performing.
February 18th, 2009 at 1:37 pm
They’re the Washington Redskins of MLB, they’re a fantasy baseball team put together without any thoughts into how each plays into the clubhouse morale. Maybe a little homework on who the players are before they just throw money at all these high priced overrated “studs”. Carlos Beltran was a stud when he played in KC and Houston where he wasn’t expected to be the hero. NY thought he was their savior after the playoffs he had for Houston in one season, and has yet to even match that performance to warrant the overpriced contract he received. Johan Santana is just Johan Santana a guy that will go out every 5th day and pitch and he’s a stud but he doesn’t play all 9 positions 162 so the Melts, if i can borrow from Eric R., are just putting stats together and hoping for the best. No chemistry equals no championships sorry NY, you’d think you would have learned that lesson from the boys from the Bronx.
February 18th, 2009 at 1:38 pm
then howard comes in and lays delgado out harder then he did lidge when we won the WS
February 18th, 2009 at 1:38 pm
i live in long island and I have no idea why you’d call it a dump. please enlighten me, I live on the gold coast of long Island, one of the most beautiful places ive ever been is the Northern part of long island
February 18th, 2009 at 1:40 pm
Oh John….great that you are asking about patches, hats and T-shirts.I do have the 2006 Mets NL East shirt and cap,I also have my 2000 Mets NL Champs shirt and cap as well.I also have the 99 Mets wild card cap as well.I even drink my Sunday coffee in my 1986 Mets world Champs mug too.Albiet it is old news, just like the 2008 world Phvcking Champs its old news.Old news is history and can never be rewritten ,but remembered and revered in its own way and can never be taken away.I am proud of the 1 Mets champinship and 4 Islanders Lord Stanleys that I have seen in my life.Dynasty lives with the Islanders, too bad they suck now,but they are STILL my team.
February 18th, 2009 at 1:43 pm
Will all the Phillies fans in the room please raise their hands…
Those of you with your hands down might be the fans that are “consumed” with their team’s rival. This is, after all, a Phillies blog line.
Go play on a Mets fan site… if there are any out there.
February 18th, 2009 at 1:48 pm
The cry of a LOSER: We won head to head…… means NOTHING!!
Winning the World Championship Trophy……. means EVERYTHING!
I LOVE THIS!
February 18th, 2009 at 1:48 pm
You guys can pick up Hamels body at Citifield when we’re done with him….he’ll be six feet under the mound if you can’t find him.
February 18th, 2009 at 1:50 pm
wait… if Hamels is 6 feet under the mound… where are they going to keep the Mets’ chances of winning a pennant?
February 18th, 2009 at 1:52 pm
Philadelphia is a loser town with loser teams. World Series was won and deserved but doesnt make it the city where Champions are made, thats New York!!
February 18th, 2009 at 1:53 pm
Do Phillies fans go on the mets blogs and talk a bunch of shit? Becuase i could seriously care less what they say over there…thats what this is for, getting your thoughts and opinions out there, go hype up the mets and enjoy the season on your own time…
February 18th, 2009 at 1:53 pm
Mets Blog has more people then this blog kevin.
February 18th, 2009 at 1:54 pm
thats such an insightful statement from ‘PhilsFans=Clueless’…
by the way… with your infinite wisdom, could you tell us where the 2008 Championship trophy is residing?
February 18th, 2009 at 1:55 pm
I just enjoy this blog better, stupid people in both cities though.
February 18th, 2009 at 1:56 pm
Can’t wait til the season starts…will you guys still be holding on to your World Series of 08 as your prime argument?? You do know its 2009..a new season is beginning. Don’t live in the past like those Damn Yankees…
February 18th, 2009 at 1:57 pm
Thats one thing Phils and Mets fans can agree on… this blog is definitely better.
February 18th, 2009 at 1:58 pm
Kev….its a Phillies fan page, and yet also its a free fan forum as well, and if certain fans want to make quintessential assess of themselves,so be it.If Tim wanted this to be an ONLY Phillies fans website,he’d have had people apply and offer them a secret password to join. Now I am a Platinum card carrying Mets fan and never will be a fan of the Phillies, that doesnt mean I can’t voice an opinion.I come in here almost everyday,INCLUDING thru your playoff run, gave them the respect when it was called for and hope to say one of the well respected Mets fans in here and will continue to vent in here.As the great Ric Flair once said it Kev. “Whether you like it,or you don’t like it,learn to love it”
February 18th, 2009 at 1:59 pm
PhilsFans, they just one the world series. Im pretty sure there the champs until someone else wins ,but whatever. Also if you dont think that if the Mets fans won you wouldnt be throwing that card at Phillies, your nuts.
February 18th, 2009 at 2:00 pm
definitely better than metsblog?
HA DOES THIS BLOG HAVE A DEAL WITH THE TEAMS REGIONAL SPORTS NETWORK?
THE ONLY THING BETTER IS HOW THIS BLOG DOSNT MODERATE LIKE EVERY FREEKIN COMMENT!
February 18th, 2009 at 2:04 pm
i ment philsfans=clueless
February 18th, 2009 at 2:04 pm
Too many people in Metsblog…2008 World Championship is in Pittsburgh.
February 18th, 2009 at 2:05 pm
“HA DOES THIS BLOG HAVE A DEAL WITH THE TEAMS REGIONAL SPORTS NETWORK?”
maybe not, but it does give us news about a better baseball team.
February 18th, 2009 at 2:08 pm
Hey David W,
Nice Hamels stats. How about this: 2008 Post-Season: 5 games, 4-0. Johan Santana: 0 games, no record.
Who’s consumed with who?
February 18th, 2009 at 2:11 pm
Kramer, I hope there’s a brawl too. Ryan Howard will wreck anyone on your roster, and Brett Myers is a golden gloves champ. Have fun with that.
February 18th, 2009 at 2:15 pm
Howard will wreck anyone? Is this WWE? Brett Myers a golden glove champ?? Did he earn does when he beat his wife…?
February 18th, 2009 at 2:16 pm
Why is it that Hamels gets baited repeatedly to say “choke artists” by the WFAN crew and it is the “Phillies consumed about the Mets.” Since then, I don’t think any of the Phils have said a word, and now this past week 4 different Mets are coming out talking about the Phillies.
You should check out Metsblog.com. Big post there saying how the Phillies are consumed by the Mets.
February 18th, 2009 at 2:16 pm
Also, I love this, “New York>>>>>>> Philadelphia” crap. Listen, I live inbetween the two, love going to both. It’s never a bad time. New York sports though aren’t up to par of late:
-We won the world series, you didn’t have a playoff game.
-The Eagles ended the Giants season.
-The Sixers are world better than the Knucks.
-The Flyers, Rangers, and Devils are tight, as usual, but it’ll end up like last year, with us as the last man standing.
February 18th, 2009 at 2:18 pm
PhilsFans=Clueless,
Yes, a brawl would pretty much resemble WWE. Myers actually won the Golden Gloves before the match with his wife…
February 18th, 2009 at 2:18 pm
before anyone starts saying that this is a rivalry..its not a rivalry yet…all it is is 4 or 5 grown men taking jabs at each other…once there is a brawl or once they phillies or mets start winning more than one world series…than we can talk about being a rivalry….i believe that this year there will be a fight..me personally…and with the whole we won the world series and mets fans on here saying thats the past..if thats the case then you cant be talking about how we beat them head to head last year…bottom line is that its a new year…you give the phillies their credit…blah blah blah…mets have to beat them…they very well can…and in my own opinion even with the phillies winning the world series i still dont think they are better than the mets…
February 18th, 2009 at 2:18 pm
Its great to see everyone throwing salvos at one another when it comes to this newly budding rivalry. For at least the next 40 days and 40 knights its gonna be a war of words.Philles won the 2008 title, understand it Mets fans and accept it.2009 is another animal.Starting April 5th (4th for the Phils) its a clean slate and for those who use “Team to beat” 5 words come to mind “SHUT UP AND PLAY BALL”
February 18th, 2009 at 2:21 pm
We should’ve kept Rudy Seanez around just for on-field fights.
February 18th, 2009 at 2:21 pm
now rich…come on…if you are able to say phillies won the world series..we can say giants won the superbowl…i mean come on thats just brutal argument…and the 76ers and knicks both blow…i mean come on…thats your argument?
February 18th, 2009 at 2:21 pm
It is a rivalry. Both teams are playing well at the same time and they play each other like 18 to 19 times a year. The hatred just add fuel to the fire. I never cared about the Phils and Mets matchup til 2007 and suddenly Phillies fans emerged from no where with thier big mouths like they weren’t the most losing team of all time.
February 18th, 2009 at 2:21 pm
phillyhater- you may be in denial. look into it.
February 18th, 2009 at 2:24 pm
philsfans=clueless… i believe the super bowl took place in ‘09, nice try tho
February 18th, 2009 at 2:24 pm
Phillyhater, you’re right. Giants won the Superbowl which is why you don’t see any Eagles players claiming the Eagles the team to beat.
February 18th, 2009 at 2:24 pm
Both teams just need to shut up and let the play on the field do the talking but if you want a national perspective on ny baseball when it comes to the mets and yankees just go to youtube and search colin cowher mets
February 18th, 2009 at 2:24 pm
cmon rich, are you gonna sit here and tell me Cole is better then Johan?? im mean seriously i think hammels is good…(not so good vs Mets) but he’s good….you guys couldnt touch Johan last year….dont make me get Johan vs Phils in 08…..actually let me do it to you
08 Johan starts vs Phills…
Games Started 5
2-0 2.97 ERA with 32 Ks WHIP 0.94
February 18th, 2009 at 2:25 pm
how is this a rivalry?…are you kidding me?…because they throw words around and sa we are the team to beat?…please…not only that….the media basically presses the players to say something stupid to blow it out of proportion?..come on…this whole mets/phillies “rivalry” is stupid…because its not one….call me when they fight on the field and start throwing at each other…until then shut up and play ball..
February 18th, 2009 at 2:26 pm
hahaha no chase but i do hear philly fans saying giants suck and eagles are a whole lot better…come on..
February 18th, 2009 at 2:26 pm
but im with stink….let the fans do all the talking on the boards and let the players do their thing on the field…i just wanted to bust your balls posting everything I posted earlier this morning….AND IT WORKED….LOL.
February 18th, 2009 at 2:29 pm
will it turn into a rivalry?..yes at some point in the not so distant future…but in order for it to be a rivalry you need to have some fights in there…which again i see it happening this year some time
February 18th, 2009 at 2:29 pm
Phillyhater, you sure did win a super bowl. Your last game was a loss to the Eagles though. So, that would mean the Eagles ended the Giants season. As for the Sixers, they have the best record in the NBA over the last 20 games, and now are competing for 4th-5th in the east, in other words, a home series. That’s a lot better than the Knucks.
As for us being better than the Mets, we won the division by a game in 2007, then by 3 in 2008, and the World Series the same year. They haven’t had a playoff game in 2 years, there’s no discussion really until they get in too. I’d go on to say we’re better than your other NY team too, who hasn’t won a division since 2006, and hasn’t seen the World Series since 2003.
February 18th, 2009 at 2:32 pm
thats where i draw the line…ARE YOU KIDDING ME!?!?!!….you are that arrogant after winning ONE WORLD SERIES TITLE IN 100 YEARS!?!?!!?….HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAHAHAHA….oh my god…WOW….every philly fan on here should yell at you for even thinking of comparing the phillies to the yankees…are you serious?…i hate the yankees more than anything…but to actually think about comparing the phillies to the YANKEES!?!?…are you kidding!?!?!…
February 18th, 2009 at 2:32 pm
you’re probably right… its not a rivalry. at least not an exciting one.
you would actually need TWO competitive teams to have a good rivalry.
February 18th, 2009 at 2:32 pm
PhillyHater…Braves/Mets was a rivalry…maybe not base on winning but sometimes hatred and when someone gets the best out of you creates the rivalry. If it wasnt a rivalry then why does everyone stop to watch????
February 18th, 2009 at 2:33 pm
C’mon, ALL teams have stupid and reactionary fanbases. I only care what the players do and say and I saw Eagles players give nothing but respect to the Giants. This is a baseball blog and aside from Pelfry on the FAN yesterday, I haven’t heard a single Met say “well, they just won the World Series and we collapsed so I mean, we’re really in no position to talk.”
February 18th, 2009 at 2:33 pm
thats what everyone talks about…you people win a world series title and then start comparing your team to everyone else…the YANKEES?…oh my god…
February 18th, 2009 at 2:33 pm
If fans want to talk trash to eachother and debate whos better and so forth thatscool, because thats the nature of any fan, The players should just worry about what goes on the field, and I personally think a lot of this trash talk between the teams is getting over hyped by the media in both cities, the only thing people are talking about with the yankees is arod, so the ny media probably wants another story to distract baseball fans from that and if you life in philly you know that the philly media will try to make a big deal out of anything, just look at donovan mcnabb, anything that has come out of his mouth the last month has been turned into some huge contraversy
February 18th, 2009 at 2:34 pm
David W,
That’s great. How great of a pick up was he? You didn’t make the playoffs, missing by a game again. Same reasons as you will this year too, not your bullpen, but your crappy rotation.
Your regular season stats are worth squat. Santana could go 6-0 and against the Phillies, and Hamels 0-6 against the Mets. Make the playoffs, let’s see Santana match what Hamels did in the clutch, and we’ll talk.
February 18th, 2009 at 2:34 pm
One observation….Any article about Phila -vs- Mets negative comments, and there is a guaranteed post explosion.
February 18th, 2009 at 2:34 pm
phillyhater- its only been 28yrs
February 18th, 2009 at 2:35 pm
New York is the greatest city in the world? Please. Historically, New York City was a safe haven to British Loyalists. Until Guliani’s administration, NYC was a safe haven for scumbags. If New York had it’s way historically, we’d be typing with British accents, waiting for our 4 oclock spot of tea, while smack talking about cricket and not baseball. New York is a s- hole. Philadelphia is, among other things, THE BIRTHPLACE OF OUR COUNTRY. Trump that scumbags.
February 18th, 2009 at 2:36 pm
Additionally, and this is really splitting hairs, but the Phillies have won two World Series in the past 100 years and have appeared in more World Series’ than the Mets since 1980 which is really as far back as any of you need to be concerned with.
February 18th, 2009 at 2:36 pm
who is everyone?…mets fans and phillies fans?…yankees/red sox or rivals…thats a rivalry…talk to me when they start being like that…when they start chucking at people…when the catcher has to separate players….i mean come on…ohhhh wow….and kevin..lol….just because the mets collapsed twice in consecutive years…it always came down to the wire…they are competetive..they just choke…so…
February 18th, 2009 at 2:37 pm
You know its a rivalry if you can make valid arguments its a rivalry…tell Rollins and Beltran its not a rivalry.
February 18th, 2009 at 2:37 pm
Rich just said that the Phils could beat the Yankees, which I agree they could… if you’re calling that a comparison, then thats on you.
I didn’t see any comparisons made, maybe I overlooked it.
February 18th, 2009 at 2:38 pm
Not just collapsed, but COLLAPSED. The biggest COLLAPSE in baseball history (a record previously held by the Phillies, thanks for taking that off our plate, chumps.)
February 18th, 2009 at 2:38 pm
Comparing the two cities is pointless, were all part of the same country were all dealing with how shitty this country is right now, its not like new york isnt facing the same problems as philly or d.c or any other city, why don’t peope just stick to baseball when it comes to trash talk why does it matter on what city is better
February 18th, 2009 at 2:40 pm
rich…how can you compare santana to hamels?…because of the post season?…i dont understand you guys have a crazy run in the post season and you deem yourselves as high as the yankees….come on..its a world series…congrats…but its a new year….i dont understand how
you can compare santana to hamels (after ONE year)
you can ever think to compare yourselves to the yankees (after ONE year)
February 18th, 2009 at 2:40 pm
theres a difference in competing for a championship and competing for a playoff spot.
February 18th, 2009 at 2:43 pm
Wait, who compared the Phillies to the Yankees?
February 18th, 2009 at 2:44 pm
Kevin : Rich said this:
I’d go on to say we’re BETTER than your other NY team too, who hasn’t won a division since 2006, and hasn’t seen the World Series since 2003.
the fact that hes pointing out the stats of their post season pretty much implies that he is comparing the two…thank you..
and stink i agree…thats just pointless…its a baseball blog…not a historical blog..
February 18th, 2009 at 2:44 pm
David W,
No it didn’t work. You guys got Johan last year, and still finished 1 game out of the playoffs. He didn’t change anything, because your starting pitching after him remains weak, even this year.
Further, I don’t care if Hamels is 0-6 against the Mets, and Santana 6-0. Santana has NEVER done what Hamels did last season, win a World Series MVP. Until he does, this isn’t even a discussion. I’d take a Josh Beckett, Cole Hamels, Andy Pettite type over Santana any day. That’s not to say he was bad last September, he was not, but he wasn’t enough. The guys I mentioned would never leave after 8 innings for fear of being “hurt” in a big game.
February 18th, 2009 at 2:46 pm
Rivalry only includes two teams….not the the whole MLB….you don’t make sense. If both Fan base stops to watch then yes its a rivalry….what makes a rivalry the team or the fans??? Its the Fans…if it wasnt why would each fan base make there way to the other club stadium….the passion for baseball between the two is great resulting in rivalry.
February 18th, 2009 at 2:48 pm
talk to me when hamels wins 2 cy youngs…hamels is always hurt..last year was his first full season…lets see him do the SAME thing year in and year out that johan does…then talk to me..every phill fan on here i know says you cant compare johan to hamels…and anyone who thinks so…is really crazy
February 18th, 2009 at 2:48 pm
Both teams just need to shut up and let the play on the field do the talking but if you want a national perspective on ny baseball when it comes to the mets and yankees just go to youtube and search colin cowher mets
But the Phillies HAVE let their play do the talking. I think the Mets are the ones that need to take that approach. Mets fans (the clueless ones), you have no leg to stand on. Not one! Time to hit the diamond for 2009, the Phillies are ready to defend their title and our fans are ready to christen Citi field.
February 18th, 2009 at 2:49 pm
I think trash talk between fans is fine but keep it relevant, new york being a better city than philadelphia or the phillies having 10000 losses has not effect on what goes on the field, talk about whos better reyes or rollins or who the better pitching or line up, keep it at that
February 18th, 2009 at 2:49 pm
I am kind of curious about something…..why was it OK for J-Roll to say the Phillies were the team to beat, but if Carlos Beltran,K-Rod,Tom Seaver,Barry Bonds,Charles Nelson Reilley,Rodney Allen Rippie,Ronald McDonald and Corky the Cow says team to beat its “sacreligeous and offensive”.
February 18th, 2009 at 2:49 pm
Historically the Yankees are the better team. Historically they’re the best team in baseball. However, the Phillies are the World Champs and the Yankees haven’t won a World Series since they last beat some team, I forget who, in 2000. That was nine years ago. That’s almost a decade. So yea, I don’t think it’s THAT crazy of an argument. It’s not like he said the Red Sox.
February 18th, 2009 at 2:50 pm
Really Phillyhater? Santana ever start a world series game? That’s what it’s all about.
February 18th, 2009 at 2:51 pm
Grrrrrumpy,
Yes. He went out and won the MVP after he said it. You back it up, say whatever the hell you want.
February 18th, 2009 at 2:51 pm
Miner, the difference is that J-Roll was right. I don’t think a single fan on this board will be making fun of Carlos Beltran’s highlights if you go and win a championship but until then =P
Didn’t it get your panties in a bunch when J-Roll said that after the Mets missed the playoffs by one Carlos Beltran at bat? Now imagine if you had won it all.
February 18th, 2009 at 2:52 pm
i dont think you can compare hamels and santana, santana has been in the league longer and has had a lot of success so naturally he is the better regular season pitcher, postseason you can make the argument that hamels is the better pitcher because hes had more success then johan, the better debate is who is going to be the better pitcher this year
February 18th, 2009 at 2:52 pm
*missed the World Series.
February 18th, 2009 at 2:53 pm
Stink the Reyes and Rollins is not a conversation to debate. We all agree Reyes is better and younger stronger faster….etc….
February 18th, 2009 at 2:55 pm
I still think Charlie Manuel is Juiced…I think Howard and Charlie is needle buddies. They are just too big. Especially Charlie.
February 18th, 2009 at 2:55 pm
oh my god rich…so the WHOLE season you are going to complare the two based on one pitcher being able to pitch in the world series?…thats a crap argument…
February 18th, 2009 at 2:57 pm
I think reyes has a huge upside and is younger, but i would take rollins right now, he came through in the clutch and does have the mvp hardware
February 18th, 2009 at 3:01 pm
rich…how can you compare santana to hamels?…because of the post season
Funny, the Giants fans would be the first ones saying that Eli is better than Donovan because of what he did in the postseason-winning a Super Bowl. Well, Hamels leads that department 1-0. Santana is 3 years older than Hamels, BTW. I’m gonna use that because when Rollins and Reyes are compared Mets fans use the “lets see how Reyes is when he gets to Rollins’ age”.
Because of the postseason accomplishment, Hamels is on the same playing field as Santana. That can not be debated now.
And you cant tell me this isn’t a rivalry, when the teams are separated by about 100 miles, both teams fanbases travel to the others stadium and the standings are as close as they are. This is a rivalry and it’s heated on the field and in the stands.
February 18th, 2009 at 3:02 pm
Gold glove hardware, World Series hardware, etc.
February 18th, 2009 at 3:09 pm
Rich and Mutley…. am curious,K-Rod said himself that the Mets were the “Team to beat” just imagine….What if he’s wright? What if the Mets go out there and prove it on the field.
February 18th, 2009 at 3:11 pm
Then I guess we’ll all eat crow but why should we concede his stupid statement before he’s even played a game in a Mets uniform.
February 18th, 2009 at 3:16 pm
You would take Rollins right now cause you’re a fan….everyone Else in the MLB would take Reyes…I would take Hanley Ramirez over Reyes but he would be the only one.
February 18th, 2009 at 3:20 pm
I never said concede. What do you expect ANY athlete to say “We are no good,we stink,we can never compete with the allmighty Phillies, will quiver and shake, and take our lumps and beatings like we so deserve and continue to be a meek and meeger team”.That will never happen.Last I checked,Doesn’t K-Rod have a world series championship somewhere in his reseme?
February 18th, 2009 at 3:23 pm
Resume rather.
February 18th, 2009 at 3:32 pm
You don’t have to go to both extremes. Don’t you think that “You know what, they won the World Series last year. They’ve beat us in the division the past two years. We think we have a really good team though and can compete with them.” is a lot more grounded then acting a fool and saying “We’re the team to beat.”? It’s not like the Phillies just lost in the first or second round of the playoffs or even lost in the World Series. They are the WORLD CHAMPIONS.
February 18th, 2009 at 3:38 pm
and thats exactly what beltran said if tim put up the WHOLE story but just like the media he puts what beltran said about cole hamels…so read the story again…i.e. which is why this “rivalry” is based on the media….someone before said the heat is on the field?…where?…all i see is them playing…no fights no making fun of one another…nothing..its not a rivalry
February 18th, 2009 at 3:40 pm
The World Champs is the winner of the WBC…the Phils are world series champs. Get it right I hate in all sports when teams state they are the World Champs when they only played in the States and two cities in Canada.
February 18th, 2009 at 3:44 pm
Seriously, its America’s pastime. No one here cares about baseball in Argentina. You’re getting really ridiculous now so just stop and wait for the next Mets related thread.
K? Thanks.
February 18th, 2009 at 3:47 pm
This Beltran quote is further proof that the Mets are obsessed with the Phillies!
February 18th, 2009 at 3:54 pm
The media pundits will do their best to stir things up… that’s what they’re paid to do. I don’t fault the media. This is a rivarly… these two teams don’t like each other and both teams are capable. Nobody wants to create bulletin board material but these guys can’t help themselves… they just don’t like each other. I do think that the Phillies are in their heads and I’m happy that they keep talking. I bought my season tickets this week and I have circled 9/12… Saturday night versus the Mets.
February 18th, 2009 at 4:02 pm
Clueless… please tell me you’re joking. If the WBC represents the real world champion, then why do so many players choose not to participate??
Because the REAL world champion is the winner of the World Series.
Douchebaggery…
February 18th, 2009 at 4:05 pm
2007, 2008 proved that the Phillies WERE the team to beat in the NL East.
2009, as of right now the Phillies ARE the team to beat in ALL OF BASEBALL.
These are the facts, whether you Mets fans can accept them or not.
Lets play a game:
Phillies have the edge in 1B, 2B, SS, LF/RF, Bench and Starting and Relief Pitching.
Mets have the edge at 3B and CF.
Phillies have the edge in managing.
I’d say the catchers are a push. Both are very good defensively.
Lets see how this plays out…..the key between the 2 will be if the Mets improved bullpen can step up.
This of course doesn’t even factor what the other East teams bring to the mix.
I think the biggest problem that Putz and K-Rod will have is that they will have to face alot of left-handed bats in Rollins(Switch), Victornio (Switch), Utley (Left), Howard (Left), Ibanez (Left). Advantage should be with the Phils there as well.
As most Mets fans and Phils fans know, games are not won on paper. Let’s play the game.
February 18th, 2009 at 4:07 pm
Sadaharu Oh is the WORLD CHAMPION OF HOME RUNS and I couldn’t pick him out of a line-up of the Japanese Olympic swim team. It just doesn’t count.
February 18th, 2009 at 4:20 pm
Why not participate??? Um they got a million reasons not to play….thier bucks you fool. Doesn’t take away what the WBC is to the rest of the world…don’t hate the WBC cause Americans don’t have pride only greed for thier dollars. Look at the economic state and tell me I’m fool. You DOUCHE!!
February 18th, 2009 at 4:23 pm
All of the world’s baseball talent comes to the MLB to play… just like the NBA. -This is where real talent comes to play. And that is why they call it World Champs, because the league contains the most competitive talent in the world.
February 18th, 2009 at 4:27 pm
Really Kevin?? Before Jackie Robinson were Champions not calling themselves World Champs?? They were not because they were a diverse league. Americans are full of themselves, including myself. The difference is we all can’t admit it.
February 18th, 2009 at 4:31 pm
that was then – are you saying the MLB is discriminating against players these days?
the MLB does not discriminate, thats why you have players from all over the world playing… and thats why its the best talent in the world, hence, World Champs.
ps. do your parents know that you’re using the computer, or are they not home from work yet?
February 18th, 2009 at 4:33 pm
and thats the whole point, this isn’t just a league for Americans, its a league for everyone in the world – if they have the talent to make it
February 18th, 2009 at 4:44 pm
I dont want to hear anybody say the phrase “bulletin board material”. So your telling me that Hamels saying the Mets are choke artists is going to make them play and try even harder then they were going to in the first place? give me a break
Its a 162 game season, and the two teams play eachother 18 times, im pretty sure that that both teams want to win and demolish the other every single team out, no matter what they say, the Phillies could say that the Mets are the most talented and explosive team in the Majors and the Mets are still going to want to win at all costs, im sick of “bulletin bored material”.
People, when Hamels said “the last two years they have been choke artists”, was he lying or saying something that every other baseball fan in America already knew? So why is it a big deal?
The best “bulletin bored material” was when the Eagles played the Pats in the Superbowl in 04′ and Belichek read the Patriots the Eagles parade plans on Broad Street. Haha I’m a Eagles/Philadelphia sports fan, and hate the Pats, but that was awesome. haha
February 18th, 2009 at 4:46 pm
rich, your a philly fan and i will just leave it at that….when it comes to MLB your a clueless tool….come back to me when Cole wins at least one cy young….Livan Hernadez won the the World Series MVP in 97…so i guess him and hamels would be equal then right??
February 18th, 2009 at 4:49 pm
Shea Stadium = a Sewer converted into a stadium
+
Queens = Armpit of the United States
+
Mets = Biggest choke artists in recent history
+
Mets Fans = Scum Bags

Worst Franchise In All of Sports….
Haha….Phillies Baby…World Ph*ckin Champs!!! I love it!!
February 18th, 2009 at 4:53 pm
Imagine if the two teams had a bench clearing brawl and fought..
The Mets have a lot of spanish and puerto rican players, so they probably all have knives on them, and Howard and J-Roll are probably packing heat…Interesting
February 18th, 2009 at 5:00 pm
hold up there chase mutley… no taking pot shots at NYC now… i live in NYC and am from here, and ive gone to philly many, many times to go see games and hang out with a few buddies that live there. I also read the philly papers, where i learn all about the murders and the cops getting shot up. You wanna call long island a dump? sure, you can do that… but ive been to the burbs of philly and the burbs of NYC and trust me man, it’s the same shit. Same boring people doing the same boring shit. You know it, i know it. Philly is the same, whiney red-headed step child that Baltimore is… NYC the greatest city in the world, so let’s not play any games. Save your animosity for the mets, don’t bring it on NYers, because i’d be happy to slap a bitch to prove my point. dig? good.
February 18th, 2009 at 5:09 pm
Waa Waa…Let’s cry on the phillies nation website because we have nothing to cheer about because our team is a bunch of chokers and fans are a bunch of punks. Bring it this year fellas!! Bring it!! I’ll bring it to whoever I feel like bringin it to, Anybody who steps foot in my park baby….ya know why because we are World Ph*ckin Champs!!
End of Story!!!!
February 18th, 2009 at 5:19 pm
I love when Mets fans come to the Bank and get their asses beat the f*ck up, its price less
February 18th, 2009 at 5:35 pm
LETS CHOKE METS! LETS CHOKE METS!
Give their trolls a break, they are just frustrated that they have to deal with the Phillies being the WFC’s and the fact their team has to wait 7 months to prove their WERTH. If the Mets jump out to any kind of division lead, they will be crowing. Just to get shut down again.
I have news for you Mets tools, this Phillies team is deeped than the 2008 version. Mets fans like to say “if our pen did this or didn’t do that, your team don’t win the division”. Guess what, the Phillies won a stretch of games during the season when the offense was in a 2 month slump, AS A TEAM. I have never witnessed that before.
THe Mets on the other hand, nothing but excuse after excuse. I hate their guts, their team and the portion of their fanbase that is nothing but trash.
February 18th, 2009 at 5:36 pm
This is certainly a rivalry, in the stands and on the field.
HATE is a big part of a rivalry and it certainly exists here.
February 18th, 2009 at 5:43 pm
If you take that NYC education and read, I didn’t say anything bad about NYC. In fact I said that it’s a great city.
Greatest city in the world? Save the BS for the tourists and their t-shirts though. Toronto is a better city than NY and that’s in CANADA.
February 18th, 2009 at 5:46 pm
“Just a note. In the last 2 years, the Phils have needed to come through when it counted. Last year, we finished 13-4 in our last 17 games to beat out the Mets, who finished 5-12. This year, we finished 13-3 in our last 16 games, to beat out the Mets, who finished 6-10. To review, in 33 games, we are 26-7, and the Mets are 11-22. Feel free to point this out to all Mets fans you know”
-From a commenter on the 700 level.
The Mets and their fans should shut up until they can come through in SEPTEMBER and then OCTOBER. Not April-August.
Just a final thought which should end this “debate”.
February 18th, 2009 at 5:50 pm
Can’t help myself…..ONE MORE, this time from the Mets blog….
Another from metsblog:
” Comment by ridethesnake
2008-09-25 11:12:07
“Everyone loves to hate us because we are bad fans that will this team to lose, yet have no problem yelling that the Yankees stink or mocking the Braves chants while we lose every year and they win. We sound like that kid on the playground that makes fun of everyone and when he falls, everyone laughs.”
LMAO!! Game over…..see you in September.
February 18th, 2009 at 6:28 pm
Well Mutley, I’m that 1% that isn’t living in the dumpy subs… i live in the city, have so for 10 years. Long Island sucks, Queens is worse… but when you’re from Philly… man, you’ve just got nothing to say about NYC. I’m perfectly happy enjoying the Phils from here man, it’s all good. You, however, are not welcome.
If you love the phils mutley, i love you, but i’ll still slap you.
Toronto? not so much, however Montreal is awesome.
February 18th, 2009 at 6:36 pm
i love how phillies fans get the most comments on articles about things that the mets players say. Why dont you just worry about your own team instead of trying to bash the Mets. Oh and notice how we dont care what you say, yet when we say something its like the end of the world and u guys have to defend yourselves.
February 18th, 2009 at 7:41 pm
was reading a bit…
Grrrumpy Miner: As the great Ric Flair once said it Kev. “Whether you like it,or you don’t like it,learn to love it”
Way to show how classy Mets fans are by quoting a professional (?) wrestler. Seriously? The great ric flair? I am embarassed for you. It was almost okay when I was about 9 years old. Then, I grew up and realized how trashy it was. Enjoying wrestling is a prerequisite to inbreeding.

Todd, still never said anything bad about NYC that isn’t true. I said it is a great city. Outside of Shea / Citi Field is DISGUSTING and I dare anyone to disagree with me. I also don’t understand where this “class” angle that New Yorkers try to throw around with people from Philly as if New Yorkers aren’t known as the rudest, most crass people by the other 49 states that they are not.
I am from New Jersey. I grew up 15 minutes from Manhattan and lived there for 22 years — I was a Phils / Mike Schmidt fan the entire time. I lived in Philadelphia for six years. I live in neither now. I have great things to say about both cities. You know damn well that Philadelphia is more than the murder rate just like NYC isn’t about across the street from Shea. There is good and bad everywhere. I would rather live in the Chestnut Hill section of Philadelphia than ANY other neighborhood on the East Coast. For me, there’s nowhere that can touch it. I’m glad you enjoy NY.
My entire point is that everyone with the NYC is better than Philadelphia nonsense can zip it because a) well this is about baseball, the Marlins make both teams look foolish and they’re from FLORIDA and b) I KNOW that 99% of the Mets jerks that post on this board live in some goonie town like Parsippany, NJ or Islip, NY and those cookie cutter, guido infested junk holes can’t hold a candle to Philly. The fascination bridge and tunnelers have with pretending that they’re from Manhattan is unreal.
