Carrasco, Happ Shine In 6-2 Loss

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Thu, February 26, 2009 04:30 PM

Carlos Carrasco and JA Happ kicked off the Fight For Fifth with gusto Thursday. The rest of the Phillies, however? No gusto.

The Phillies lost 6-2 to the Blue Jays. The story was Carrasco and Happ, who each pitched scoreless two-inning outings. Carrasco yielded no hits and struck out three; Happ struck out one and surrendered a hit.

Elsewhere, the Phillies struggled again both on the mound and at the plate. Justin Lehr gave up back-to-back home runs, and Blaine Neal let up four of his own. Gary Majewski, however, turned in a solid two innings of work, striking out two and surrendering no hits. Jimmy Rollins drove in Jason Ellison with a single in the third inning; Greg Dobbs drove in John Mayberry Jr. with a single in the sixth. The Phillies are now 0-2 on the spring and will play the Reds tomorrow in Sarasota. Andrew Carpenter and the three setup relievers are scheduled to pitch, among others.

So were 0-2, everyone who was suppsoed to do well , has done well through now.

Last year we went 12-18 in spring and won the world series (the mets went 20-11, proving their worth in spring, but not september)

In 1997, the phils went 17-11, best in spring in the national league that year finished the year with 94 losses, having never even been 6 games above 500 at any point during the season

  2. Kev Says:

The lions were 4-0 in the preseason last year haha, not worried at all.

  3. John Fire Says:

yeah, if you look at it, who has pitched well so far? moyer, blanton, carrasco, happ and a few of those non-roster guys we thought might be worth a look (majewski, bork, koplove, etc.).

and why have we lost? because of guys who aren’t even going to be on the team in 2-3 weeks anyway… neal, nestor, bisenius.

no biggie. plus, a couple of the regular position players have had some good cuts too – ibanez, dobbs, rollins… it’s coming together.

  4. MA Phanatic Says:

Yeah important to look at the performances and not just at the final score. I’m real happy Carrasco and Happ pitched so well. This fifth battle spot is going to be a lot of fun to watch if this trend continues

  5. Tim Malcolm Says:

I’d rather have a team that slowly gains its bats and groove than have one who shoots out of the spring gate clubbing teams.

  6. Greg V. Says:

Hey I salute Carrasco and Happ for a job well done. The scores of these games mean very little. By the end, it’s just a battle of the scrubs anyway, so anything can happen.

  7. tim mccarver sucks Says:

I look at the pitching numbers of the regulars and they are all looking good the guys loosing the team are just fillers so Im not worried. I think though Gary Majewski is a name to watch out for a bullpen spot.
