Rumor: Phils Still Debating Relief Pitching

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Thu, February 19, 2009 10:33 AM

Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com (Insider) reports the Phillies may not be quite finished looking for pitching, after all. According to Crasnick:

There are indications that the Phillies might toss out an all-purpose offer to Will Ohman, Joe Beimel and Dennys Reyes and sign whichever reliever takes it first. A baseball source said it’s unlikely the Phils will offer anything more than a one-year deal in the $750Kto $1MM range.

Does this mean the Phillies threw any money out there? No. Take this rumor with caution and stay under the impression that the Phils are finished looking for external help until the season begins.

  1. Brian Says:

I wouldn’t mind seeing Beimel in there, he’s gritty. It would fill Romero’s void nicely and be a solid addition.

  2. Albert Says:

I would feel much better with another lefty out there in the pen. That price looks about right too. I think one of the three can be had for that price sometime in the coming weeks. However, I would not be surprised if the Phillies do not acquire one of them.

  3. Manny Says:

All three are very good… let’s wait and see.

  4. From Section 113 Says:

I just think Ohman will be such a good fit here. It just seems so right, especially when we always seem to need pitching.

  5. Geoff Says:

Translation: If one of those guys will play for chepa then theyll sign one of them….

  6. Justin Says:

all three of them at this point will sign for cheap they’re teamless going into spring training and losing time to join a squad. I think if they can sign Beimel or Ohman once Romero comes back and he proves he’s the same pitcher we’ve always seen then it gives us a bargaining chip come July 31st we have a lefty to deal for something that we may need come the deadline. Lefty relievers always have a market.

  7. Bruce Says:

If I remember correctly, Phillies’ front office have indicated recently that they are done with off season aquisitions for pitching and are satisfied with what they have. So disregard the latest rumor that Tim provided in his blog.

  8. Albert Says:

They may have said they are “done”, but if one of these guys can be stolen for

  9. Ari Says:

You can never have too much pitching

  10. Tyler Says:

bruce… tim posted somethin about that the other day… so as he stated in this article… “Take this rumor with caution and stay under the impression that the Phils are finished looking for external help until the season begins.”

  11. Georgie Says:

Jeez, I’ve been dealing with some rather unpleasant family matters the past several days, so I thought I would come on here and feel right at home. NOT! This is the first post in awhile that I actually see some familiar names-that Beltran comment section made me even more depressed. Where’d everybody go? PN is my Prozac, what’s going on?

  12. Jason B. Says:

It would be nice to see them add another arm out of the pen, but, I’m ok with what they have entering the season. My only concern is, if Park wins the 5th spot in the rotation, who is our long arm in the pen? Please don’t say Happ, because I think that would mess the kid up.

  13. Grrrumpy Miner Says:

Georgie….the inmates from Metsblog.com are running the asylum! lol….oh well, some Mets fans who make LEGITIMATE Mets fans like myself look bad need to grow up.

  14. Manny Says:

Park should go play the WBC. I don’t want him bitter this season when he ends up in the pen.

  15. Grrrumpy Miner Says:

Off the subject….lets hear it.Now I can officially call Shea Stadium a scrap heap.As of yesterday morning, the last section of Shea came down and Shea is no longer. Now we have our NEW home in CitiField.Albiet Shea will have lasting memories including the last and greatest visit (Billy Joel double play at Shea) the old girl will be missed. It wasn’t pretty , had a fitting funeral at the end and of course 2 GREAT championship parties at the end of 1969 and 1986,but it was home and home is where you hang your hat.

  16. Georgie Says:

Miner, I hear ya. When the Vet went down it was bittersweet. She was past her prime, rat-infested, cat-infested, and who knows what else, but there were some great memories that made me shed a few tears for her when she was brought down. Same goes for the Spectrum, I sort of wish they could just refurbish it, but, she’s coming down too.

  17. Richie Allen Says:

If we have any money left….I say sign one of them,It looks like bargain time for free agents now.
By the way I wonder if Manny will sign for one year ,or will the Dodgers break down and give him more years.I’d love it if Boras gets screwed and Manny loses out altogether.

  18. Georgie Says:

Wouldn’t you think Manny and Boras are getting just a little nervous by now?

  19. Grrrumpy Miner Says:

Manny is looking for 4/$100 million. He is most likely waiting and hoping for a Carlos Beltran,Shane Victorino,or any high impact outfielder to go down with a debilitating and career threatening injury so the GM involved will cave in and in desparation will go sign Manny for what he wants….a Kings Ransom.

  20. Richie Allen Says:

Georgie, with other teams already in spring training,it has to kill Manny that he’s not playing.
As for Boras,I think he has no problem waiting.
But I hope Manny pull an A-Rod and goes against Boras .I bet Madson did the same thing earlier this year.

  21. Georgie Says:

Agreed, Richie, it’s about time his clients realized he’s playing not only with their careers, but also their lives. I think Boras is truly one of those people with no scruples or ethics, and he is not worth the extra couple MM he’s going to try and get for you.

  22. Tyler Says:

ya no… right now im kinda wishin we didn’t sign ibanez so early… but o well, couldnt have predicted this
