6. Paul Byrd in 2000

A year removed from winning 15 games, Paul Byrd’s record was just 2-9 in 2000.  He had an ERA of 6.51 and 1.49 WHIP in 83 innings of work.

Byrd allowed 17 home runs.  Batters had more hits off him than the amount of innings he pitched.  Opponets slugged .529 against the right hander and left handed hitters batted .333 with an OPS of 1.107 off him.

Byrd spent the majority of the year as a starter, however he pitched in relief for 2.1 innings.  As a starer, his ERA was 6.14 and 19.29 in relief.

During the month of April, Byrd had an ERA of 10.19 in 17 innings, allowing 20 runs on 23 hits.  His ERA was 6.30 before the All Star Break.  During the second half of the season, his ERA was over 7.

In 2001, Byrd had an 8.10 ERA in 10 innings, and the Phillies traded him to Kansas City for Jose Santiago.  Byrd pitched with Boston and Cleveland last season.  He has a career 4.38 ERA, however, 2000 was one of the worst seasons of his 13 year career.

Your fixation on replaying the agony of these nightmares! My stomach feels queezy just reading about some of these terrible memories!

    = )
Its getting better though, your list is (ugh!) right on

  2. Justin Says:

We all felt that Byrd had nothing left in the tank when we traded him away, and yet he’s still playing, well he’s looking for a job now i believe, but still thinks he can play. He’s very much similar to Jamie Moyer in that he’s not overpowering but he relys on locating his pitches and outsmarting the batters. I love that he has that throwback pitching style about him these days, whatever saves the arm i guess.

  3. Jim Says:

he did well for kc too

  4. Brooks Says:

You are just trying to scare me right Justin? Comparing Byrd to Moyer…
I could not believe how average he pitched when in a different city, he was close to good some years but always mediocre.
If he would have been mediocre even while playing on the Phillies –
    He stunk the joint up!

  5. Albert Says:

Byrd is suspected of PED use correct?

  6. Griffin Says:

Yes and he said that his dentist prescribed it for him. Maybe he should have asked his dentist for a better excuse.

  7. Albert Says:

I always thought he had a strong jaw.

  8. Justin Says:

I was comparing him in stuff only not saying he’s as successful as Moyer. Just saying that he’s been able to stick around for a guy his age without great stuff. Moyer is obviously far and away better, but you can’t deny that they aren’t very different in how they pitch, neither has a power arm and both rely on location location location, that’s where the similarities stop. So again NO i was not comparing the two based on their stats, just that they rely on being able to locate, Moyer is just more successful at it and was never a power pitcher where i believe if i remember correctly byrd had tommy john or some sort of arm surgery that forced him to rely more on location rather than power.

  9. Phan in TN Says:

I am loving the worst of series.

Poor leiby caught for so many losers.

  10. Justin Says:

Because he wasn’t good at calling pitches, he was probably one of the worst catchers in Phillies history, it came out more towards the end of his career that no one wanted him to catch them but being the everyday catcher there wasn’t much chance of changing that. When Ruiz and Coste came in it was obvious that the pitching starting getting better because of the bigger target behind the plate that they liked throwing to. Not trying to completely diss Lieby but that was always the feeling i got and it never seemed to go away.

  11. James Kay Says:

This list is pure gold. I think it underscores how tough it can be trying to pitch at the major league level. Byrd’s DWIPP is the most shocking one thus far. The facial expression in the graphic speaks volumes.

  12. Greg V. Says:

    Don’t be dissing Paul Byrd!

  13. Brooks Says:

Justin, the 2 do have something in common – they are both over 40. That is where the simiarity ends, eh?

  14. the lopez! Says:

paul byrd was the kelsey grammer look a like that threw like frasier crane
