Park Shines But Phillies Fall To Jays
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Sat, March 07, 2009 08:49 AM
Most impressive in the Phillies 4-3 loss to the Blue Jays was Chan Ho Park, who threw four innings, giving up a run on three hits while striking out four. Immersed in the Fight For Fifth, Park certainly made a mark.
Meanwhile, bullpen candidate Gary Majewski continued to impress with a perfect two innings, striking out two. The Jays scored off Yorman Bazardo and Sergio Escalona, who got the loss.
Geoff Jenkins hit a two-RBI double, while Greg Dobbs and Pablo Ozuna both collected two hits in the loss. Fan favorite John Mayberry Jr. finished 0-for-4 with two strikeouts.
The Phillies will face the Tigers at 1:05 p.m. today. Jamie Moyer, JA Happ and Scott Eyre are scheduled to pitch.

interested to seehow Happ pitches after seeing Park’s outing yesterday. What a rag ta grup that would be aside from Hamels. Myers, Moyer, Blanton and Chan Ho Park
March 7th, 2009 at 11:43 am
I don’t know Chutley, I think our rotation is pretty decent. It’s certainly not the best in baseball, but I really can’t think of a better 5 top to bottom other than the Cubs and Red Sox. I’m sure there are other teams that have a better rotation, but I really can’t think of them at the moment, and if they are better, they are not better by much.
March 7th, 2009 at 11:45 am
Of course, thats if Myers finds a happy medium between the first and second half of his season last year. He is obviously not as bad as the first half, but he’s not as good as his second half. I think that is the main intangible.
March 7th, 2009 at 11:49 am
I know this is off the thread a little bit. but i have never been a stats guy and I was wondering if someone could tell me what
OAV and WHIP stand for in a pitchers stat line. WHIP walks and hits per inning pitch, could that be right please help me thank you

Personally, I think Hamels, Myers, Moyer, Blanton, and Park has the chance to be one of the best rotations in the NL.
Hamels is the front line ace, Myers can be a dominant number two, Blanton and Moyer are both innings eaters, and Park seems like a man on a mission. People discount him, but pure stuff wise I think he has a good chance to be a real asset as a starter.
Just for fun, here are my predictions on the Phils opening day roster.
SP- Hamels, Myers, Moyer, Blanton, Park
RP- Lidge, Madson, Eyre, Durbin, Condrey, Happ, Majewski
Infielders- Howard, Utley, Rollins, Feliz, Dobbs, Giles, Bruntlett, Ruiz, Paulino
Outfielders- Werth, Victorino, Ibanez, Jenkins
I think Coste and Stairs will be traded, Majewski takes over Seanez’s role, Utley and Feliz are ready opening day, and Park wins the starting job which slides Happ into the Bullpen. I will also go out on a limb and say that Giles beats out everyone for the bench job.
Any disagreements?
March 7th, 2009 at 12:22 pm
I agree with everything you have just said except for the fact that Giles is going to be on the opening day roster. I would say Mayberry Jr. is the favorite, but we will see. I’ll go out on a limb and say that Mike Cervanek will not be on the opening day roster.

so no one can tell me what whip or OAV means in a stat line for a pitcher, sorry i am not a stats geek but thanks for the help
March 7th, 2009 at 1:28 pm
Home run Mayberry. Jackson pitching for Tigs…isn’t that the guy Blanton homered off of? I love it when the Tigs & Phils play in ST.
March 7th, 2009 at 1:33 pm
OK I get whip but this OAV thing what the hell does that stand for, cant even find it on the the net. will one of you please help me out here, it was posted in the other thread as this pitcher had 1.69 OAV
March 7th, 2009 at 2:26 pm
OAV isn’t a perfect acronym in the sense that each letter stands for it’s abbreviation. It’s opponent’s batting average if I’m not mistaken. And a 1.69 OAV is impossible, I think. More like a OAV of .169…I’m pretty sure I’m right…
March 7th, 2009 at 2:29 pm
Yeah PhillyGirlinMichigan, Blanton homered off Jackson. Jackson is a pretty good young pitcher though, he throws pretty hard.
March 7th, 2009 at 2:33 pm
and does that make me a stats geek? yuck…never thought I’d allow myself to get to this point…lol
Zolecki’s blog says that just before Mayberry’s 3 run blast, Ryno hit a foul ball so hard through the press box window that it put a hole in the drywall of the back wall of the press box…20 ft behind the window it sailed through….

(only 2 hits allowed)
March 7th, 2009 at 3:54 pm
I see that no one (including Tim) picked up on this comment by Park in an interview after the game:
“My changeup worked pretty good today, especially against left-handers,” Park said, adding that teammate Jamie Moyer taught him the pitch earlier in the week.
Adding this pitch to his repertory give him an added edge for the 5th spot in rotation. Again, Moyer shows his veteran presence to be a vital factor for the team.
March 7th, 2009 at 4:47 pm
Glad you found it, Bruce.
March 7th, 2009 at 5:06 pm
OAV is opponents batting average. you are correct.
