Phillies Acquire Taschner for Paulino

Posted by Amanda Orr, Fri, March 27, 2009 10:30 PM

The Phillies acquired left handed relief pitcher Jack Taschner from the San Francisco Giants for catcher Ronnie Paulino, who the Phillies acquired in December.

Taschner, 30, has a career 5.01 ERA in 4 seasons. Lefties batted .279 against him last season.

With the deal, the Phillies add a much needed left handed pitcher with the absence of J.C. Romero.  Chris Coste will start as Carlos Ruiz’ backup, and J.A Happ could win the 5th spot in the rotation with Chan Ho Park moving to the bullpen.

  1. Chutley Says:

don’t like it. give away a decent prospect for somebody who we won’t need after 50 games. And i like Park for the 5th spot not Happ

  2. Manny Says:

Oh nice.. this could actually work out. Good trade.

  3. Justin Says:

I agree with chutley, this gy becomes expendable after 50 games i mean he may be good trade bait at that point if he’s pitching well but do they deal him if hes pitching well and that may mean eyre would be available. I dont know its going to be a problem once jc returns because this team has no need for 3 lefties in the pen

  4. Griffin Says:

Let’s be honest, Paulino wasn’t going to make the team and is expendable. At least Taschner can be useful for 50 games. Did Paulino even have any options left?

  5. Ed Says:

Let me say this for everyones benefit…you can NEVER have too many left handers in your bullpen. Who knows, Taschner may have the type of season that Eyre had when he came to Philly. Sometimes all you need is a new zip code.

  6. Ed Says:

Besides, even if you only use Taschner for the first 50 games and then dump him, that is more than what you were going to get out of Paulino.

  7. Nick Says:

Yeah, seriously, in what world is Paulino a prospect?

  8. Chooch's Cooches Says:

I agree. Got so see Paulino play this spring and he didn’t hit anything and tossed one into center trying to throw out a runner. At least this guy will be of some use. Besides, we don’t need catchers right now with two guys with big-league experience and two others coming up through the ranks

  9. pb Says:

The Giants just flipped him to the Marlins, so we’ll get to see plenty of him

  10. Havoc Says:

I really hope the Phillies know something we don’t. I wouldn’t even want to use this guy for 50 games. Lefties even hit well off him. From where I sit if he’s on the team you take the best bullpen in baseball and give it a liability.

  11. scot Says:

I understand the need in theory for another lefty outta the pen. But really, it seems that either Majewski or Koplove could be just as effective as Taschner at getting out lefties and righties both. And, now they both will likely start in Lehigh Valley. I don’t get it.

And while I don’t think Paulino had a future here, i can almost guarantee he’ll hit a bomb against us with the Marlins. What did the Giants get for him in that trade?

  12. NJ Says:

Feel for Majewski and Koplove here, I like making the deal but there’s no guarantee Taschner’s going to be any more effective than he has been recently. Glad to see Coste will be hanging around, Paulino straight up wasted a hell of an opportunity.

  13. Philadelphia Phillies Send Paulino to San Francisco in Exchange for Jack Taschner | Heard in the Cheap Seats Says:

[...] won”t stir any memories of J.C. Romero.  Over the course of four seasons in the big leagues, Taschner has a 5.01 ERA and last season, left handed hitters batted .279 against him.  But with the Phillies looking for [...]

  14. Fuhs Says:

Um… San Fransisco just traded him to Florida!

I hope no one bought their SF Paulino shirt already.

  15. Chris Iafolla Says:

In my mind, this is a low-risk move for the Phillies that could pay dividends. Any way you look at it, Paulino was expendable and they needed depth in the bullpen. For at least 50 games, Taschner provides depth. He won’t be J.C. Romero but he could be a solid situational lefty. If it doesn’t pan out, you don’t lose much as it seemed unlikely Paulino would make this team.

The biggest impact this move will have is on the fifth starter competition. I don’t think it means Happ has the inside track, but won impediment to him winning the gig has just been removed.

    Best Bullpen in Baseball
    1. Lidge
    2. Madson
    3. Durbin
    4. Eyre
    5. Condrey
    6. Happ/Park
    7. Majewski
(And of course one guy loses his spot when Romero returns)

Taschner provides a pretty big question mark in there whether he replaces Happ or Majewski. For 50 games i’m going to be really nervous.

  17. BurrGundy Says:

I am glad Coste is on the team. He can hit and is a pro. From looking at Taschner’s MLB record, he looks like a project at best. But we didn’t give up a lot for him and he is only 30. He may have an up side. He, at the least, provides competition for others and competition is said to bring the best out in athletes. We’ll see.

  18. psujoe Says:

Yuck, this guy is awful. I would prefer to have traded Paulino for a bag of balls.

  19. Justin Says:

Hector Correa is the player acquired by the giants for paulino, dont know if hes any good but if he is it makes sense why the marlins wouldnt deal him to us

  20. Griffin Says:

If the Phillies hadn’t overpaid for their LF, they would have had enough money to sign Will Ohman, who can actually get lefties out.

  21. christopher Says:

i’m just glad to see this nonsense about trading coste is over. i don’t like the looks of taschner but i doubt it’ll be a big issue.

  22. Paul Says:

I think it’s a good move. Taschner will fill a spot for while, and Paulino wasn’t going anywhere with Marson waiting in the wings.

  23. psujoe Says:

I wouldn’t pay Ohman 2 mil. He had a 5.45 ERA after the All star break and over 6.30 in August and September.

  24. Griffin Says:

Taschner had an 8.80 ERA in the 2nd half of ‘08.

  25. Georgie Says:

    Nice!

  26. ryan Says:

good deal. the phils desperately needed a lefty arm to fill in for JC and they Paulino wasn’t going to make the team anyway. he’s god awful.

  27. Nationals#1 Says:

who cares how they do in the second half, they’re going to get booted when jc comes back anyway

  28. psujoe Says:

2 million for 50 games? No way.

Taschner is garbage even if he is lefty. Would you date an ugly blonde just because she’s blonde?

  29. Havoc Says:

    How ugly…?

  30. psujoe Says:

    LOL!
