Rollins, Victorino Vs. Phillies In Clearwater

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Thu, March 05, 2009 11:30 AM

Jimmy Rollins, Shane Victorino and the World Baseball Classic American team will play the Phillies today in Clearwater.

Kyle Kendrick takes the hill for the Phils, and will could face a veritable all-star team of Derek Jeter, David Wright, Adam Dunn, Ryan Braun and Chipper Jones, among others.

The Phillies will respond with this formidable force: Giles (3B) / Bruntlett (CF) / Ibanez (LF) / Howard (1B) / Mayberry (RF) / Jenkins (DH) / Ozuna (2B) / Donald (SS) / Marson (C).

After Kendrick, the Phillies will send out Antonio Bastardo, Clay Condrey and Ryan Madson.

  1. Chutley Says:

CenterFielder Eric Bruntlett gotta love it. Can’t wait to see if Mayberry stays on this hot streak. Any one know who’s pitchin for good ol U.S. of A. I wouldn’t mind a Phillies loss if it helps team U.S.A.

  2. Evan Says:

Is this Madson’s first outing or has he pitched already? Look forward to seeing what he and Kendrick can do against the American team.

  3. NEPA Says:

Madson has definitely pitched already this spring. Can’t remember how many times but know I saw his name in a box score at least once.

  4. JohnKruksLoveChild Says:

Kendrick survived the first two innings without imploding

  5. Matt S Says:

Anyone got a link to a box score for the game?

  6. Justin Says:

This will be a key game to see how Kendrick can match up against a very very potent lineup. I am cautiously optimistic about Mayberry and the strong spring he’s put up so far, notice i said cautiously optimistic by no means am I saying pencil him on the 25 man roster come opening day.

  7. Mike N Says:

  8. Mike N Says:

lol Howard’s already chipped in with a K and an error

  9. Manny Says:

    That U.S. lineup is NASTY

  10. Justin Says:

How bout bruntlett knocking in the ribbie, Marcus Giles continues to look like he’s not the same player he was with the padres, rockies/dodgers.

  11. Don M Says:

Rollins and Victorino with the 2 hits off Kendrick..

Giles getting the look at 3b with Donald at SS (where he has no future, at least in the Phillies organization) tells me that they will be giving serious consideration to Giles on the roster.

Stairs will most likely be gone at some point..

Bruntlett, Jenkins, Mayberry?, Giles?, Catcher. on the bench to start the season?

  12. Griffin Says:

    No more Kendrick, please.

  13. Dennis Says:

    Don M.-

What about Dobbs on the bench?

  14. Manny Says:

Kendrick imploded in the 3rd inning.

  15. Manny Says:

Looking at the box score, he had a wild pitch… he seems to get rattled to easily!

  16. Griffin Says:

yeah, I’m listening to the game. Even some of his outs in the first 2 innings were deep fly balls. He gave up some ground ball base hits in the 3rd inning but then Chipper smoked one. He just doesn’t fool people and has a lot of problems with left-handed hitters.

  17. Justin Says:

Kendrick may have a career as the new clay condrey, good in small doses such as no more than 2 innings.

  18. Tim Malcolm Says:

Let’s see, Kendrick is pitching to Rollins, Pedroia, Chipper, Wright, Youkilis, Dunn, Braun, McCann and Victorino.

    Good luck with that.

  19. Don M Says:

Right… Knew I was forgetting somebody!!!

Dobbs, Bruntlett, Jenkins, Catcher, Mayberry/Giles …..

I forgot the best pinch hitter in all of baseball

  20. Don M Says:

    Tim,

What happens with Kendrick if he doesn’t win that 5th spot… The bullpen is already sured-up with guys who “know their roles”. Will Kendrick be moved to another organization, will he simply be sent to AAA- Lehigh Valley to keep working on things, and maybe be a spot-starter for double-headers and in case of injury, etc.

    what do you think?

  21. Justin Says:

He’s destined to pitch opening day in Lehigh to hone his control and pitches, no team is going to trade for a pitcher with control problems. Unless they feel it’s just one of those needs a change of scenery type problems which i don’t think is the case.

  22. Don M Says:

The boxscore has two errors for the Phillies… one is Howard (missed catch), the other is Kendrick (pickoff)

Does anyone know if the pickoff-throw from Kendrick was catchable? The game on Saturday (forget who was pitching, but he left for the WBC.. Naylor?) he threw a ball to Frist base that I’m sure a 6′4″+ gentleman should be able to catch, but the error was charged to the pitcher.

Howard NEVER tries to tag a runner on a pickoff throw, and he always just concentrates on catching the ball..

  23. John Fire Says:

A couple quick notes… Howard just made his second error of the game and Bastardo gave up back-to-back dingers. it’s 6-1, USA over Phillies in the 4th.

  24. Justin Says:

Bastardo is right behind Carpenter destined for Reading to start the season.

  25. Don M Says:

I’ve said with Kendrick all along that I just never thought his upside was that good.. I think we’ve already how good he can be, and the hitters have adjusted to him and he can’t get the upper-hand again.

When he tries to come inside to Lefty’s, he leaves it over the heart of the plate and unless its a sinker, they rake it..

I’d like to see him rebound, but maybe he is destined to be a reliever, just work on the sinker full-time and come out of the pen when teams need double-play ground balls

  26. John Fire Says:

    Here’s my 25-man roster:

    1B – Howard
    2B – Utley
    SS – Rollins
    3B – Giles, Dobbs
    C – Ruiz, Paulino
    LF – Ibanez, Mayberry
    CF – Victorino
    RF – Werth, Jenkins
    Util – Ozuna

    SP – Hamels
    SP – Myers
    SP – Moyer
    SP – Blanton
    SP – Happ

    LR – Condrey
    RHP – Park
    RHP – Majewski
    RHP – Durbin
    LHP – Eyre
    RHP – Madson
    RHP – Lidge

    DL – Feliz
    Sus – Romero

I send Ozuna to LHV once Feliz is back and then make a tough decision on game 51 when Romero is back.

    My easy cuts:
    - Bastardo
    - Carpenter
    - Furmaniak
    - Chavez
    - Walker
    - Hewitt
    - Hoover
    - Valendia
    - Bisenius
    - Lehr
    - Escalona
    - Woods
    - Neal
    - Nestor
    - Kendrick
    - Tracy
    - Ellison

    Tougher cuts:
    - Bruntlett
    - Stairs
    - Cairo
    - Marson
    - Carrasco
    - Koplove
    - Borkowski
    - Slayden
    - Donald

  27. John Fire Says:

3-run homer by Dunn, Phils down 9-1 in the 5th… yikes.

  28. Griffin Says:

John Fire, I like your team except I think Bruntlett will make it over Giles.

  29. Marps Says:

But Bruntlett is such a bum….where is he going to play? I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again he’s a joke in CF. I think Giles has more upside.

  30. John Fire Says:

Yeah, I struggled with that one. I would be perfectly happy if Brunt made the team again and in hindsight, might still keep Giles and can Ozuna… I’m also flip-flopping on Park vs. Happ for the 5th starting spot. Just nervous heading into the season with only one lefty in the pen. The more I think about it, the more I like Park for that #5 slot.

Also – Howard just completed the Hat Trick in the game vs. USA – Error (2, actually), K, towering homer. A three-run blast…

  31. Marps Says:

haha in typical Howard fashion….Strikeout, 2 fielding errors, then a 3 run bomb

  32. Manny Says:

    3-run homer by Howard!?

Are we expecting too much of Kendrick? After all, he’s competing for the FIFTH spot in a rotation and facing the best hitters in baseball IN A SPRING TRAINING game. I don’t know what to think… I guess he’ll have a lot more chances this spring to win that 5th spot.

  33. Marps Says:

Just when I thought you couldn’t get any dumber, you go and do something like this… and totally redeem yourself!!

  34. CT Says:

“Also – Howard just completed the Hat Trick in the game vs. USA – Error (2, actually), K, towering homer. A three-run blast…”

that’s pretty much how you could sum up Howard’s 2008 season in a nutshell, wouldn’t you say?

  35. Griffin Says:

Marps, I love the Dumb and Dumber reference, still a classic.

I think if the Phillies didn’t really like Bruntlett, they wouldn’t have signed him for $600,000 guaranteed in the off-season. Cutting him would be an expensive mistake to admit, whereas Giles and Ozuna are on minor league deals and can be cut without having to pay them.

  36. Griffin Says:

““Also – Howard just completed the Hat Trick in the game vs. USA – Error (2, actually), K, towering homer. A three-run blast…”

that’s pretty much how you could sum up Howard’s 2008 season in a nutshell, wouldn’t you say?”

Yes, and then people would clamor for him to win the MVP based on his home runs and RBI while ignoring everything else.

  37. Manny Says:

Yo, Jason Donald is alive! Home run!

  38. Marps Says:

Giles had another solid game today though…he’s looking like the dark horse to be the utility guy off the bench.

  39. Marps Says:

If you consider that aside from a few starters (Ibanez, Howard, and our maybe 5th starter), we just sent a triple A team up against the ridiculous lineup of team USA and held our own. Thats pretty impressive.

  40. Griffin Says:

so it’s Bruntlett/Donald/Ozuna/Giles for 3 roster spots, then one will get sent down when Utley comes back and another gets sent down when Feliz comes back, right?

  41. Manny Says:

Why is Bisenius pitching for the U.S.??

  42. Griffin Says:

I guess Team USA ran out of pitchers or just didn’t want to overwork any of their guys.

  43. Manny Says:

So they just throw an extra USA jersey on one of our guys? That seems so weird.

  44. Justin Says:

Why of all the possibilities would Team USA ask Joe Bisensius to be on their team? Ryan Madson turn them down? Joe Beimel or Will Ohman would probably love the opportunity to be pitching for any team right now to at least showcase their abilities.

  45. Griffin Says:

Team USA told the Phillies to just give them an extra guy in case they need him. I’m sure the Phillies wanted to guarantee that Madson pitched, so they kept him in a Phillies uniform and put him in the game themselves.

  46. philsphan Says:

I guess it doesn’t take much to be on the usa team. At least they didn’t ask Adam Eaton!

  47. Chris.I Says:

I think its safe to say that Happ is the leading candidate for the 5th spot in the rotation at this point. I never really been big on Kendrick…He doesn’t have any quality pitches, except his sinker. He has no ammo, and cannot strike a batter out to save his life…In baseball a K doesn’t mean much, just get the batter out…But in my book, if you cannot strike a batter out in the Big leauges, than you just don’t have no reason to pitch in MLB (personal oppinion)

  48. Griffin Says:

Strikeouts for pitchers are important because they leave no room for error. There is no chance of a bloop hit or for the defense to make an error. A strikeout is an absolute out. However, strikeout pitchers tend to have higher pitch counts, since it takes at least 3 pitches to strike a batter out. The smart strikeout pitchers will pick their spots and pitch to contact when necessary but still have the stuff to overpower someone in a big spot. Kyle Kendrick does not have that option.

  49. JohnKruksLoveChild Says:

Can’t believe people are willing to send Bruntlett down the river. After his first game when he looked nervous as hell and made an error, he has actually came up with a bunch of clutch hits last season. That’s the definition of a bench player, you get one or two chances in a game to make a difference and he fulfilled that roll well. His fielding is average and no better or worse then Dobbs. To me those are both solid guys that we should hold on to if possible.

Plus he fulfills our team quota for Mountain Men.

  50. Griffin Says:

    Fear the beard.

  51. christopher Says:

bruntlett is a solid utility guy. nothing to get excited about, nothing worth complaining about either.

the idea that kendrick somehow lost the 5th job because he didn’t do well against team USA is just the kind of knee-jerk reaction i’ve missed reading on philliesnation in the off season.
