Wow! Huge Comeback Salvages Series

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Wed, April 08, 2009 07:10 PM

It’s as if someone splashed a gallon of hot water on the Phillies during the seventh-inning stretch. Or that same person splashed frigid water on the Braves bullpen. Whatever the case, the Phillies collected their first win with a huge 12-11 comeback over the Braves. They are now 1-2.

The seventh seemed eerily familiar to the Phils comeback in game No. 3 of the 2008 season. a couple base hits (including RBI singles by Raul Ibanez and Pedro Feliz) set up some bad pitching (consecutive walks to Matt Stairs, Chris Coste and Jimmy Rollins). Shane Victorino singled home another run, Chase Utley walked home another, then Ryan Howard grabbed the lead with a ground out.

It all saved a bad performance by Joe Blanton (4 IP, 7 ER, 9 H) and let all fans breathe out for a day: Finally, the Phils showed some offense.

Ibanez had the most of it, homering in the second inning to tie the game at 2-2. The Braves then ran out with the big lead, thanks to a five-run third. JA Happ surrendered a two-run home run to Jordan Schafer. Chad Durbin let in a run on three walks and a hit, Clay Condrey got out of it with a strikeout (and grabbed the win), Ryan Madson pitched a 1-2-3 eighth. Brad Lidge recorded his first save of the year in his first chance, despite allowing a solo home run to Matt Diaz.

heck of a game, 7th inning was ridiculous, what a way to win their first. congrats

  2. Chutley Says:

One of the greatest games i’ve ever been to with the ring ceremony and the comeback. Still worried about the starting pitching but great great great win

  3. Jim Says:

and how fitting that ibanez, the newest phillie, is the first ashburn winner of the year.

do you have a tallie of past ashburn/jeltz winners by the way? id be interested to see who has the most/ least of either of them

  4. Ed Says:

Great comeback. Just incase anyone is wondering, Comcast is reairing the ring ceremony and game starting at 11:00pm. I believe the ring ceremony is at 11.

  5. John Fire Says:

I literally did no work whatsoever once the rally started. Sitting in my office with the door shut (I have a wall of windows though looking out into the rest of the office), watching the walkfest and listening to Harry the K while trying to look like I was hard at work, entranced in some project on my computer… heck of a game.

  6. Grrrumpy Miner Says:

Looks like the Phils didn’t disapppint youse guys.If I may,may I request the Jeltz award to the “Phans” Who abandoned CBP before the Phils came back for not showing enough faith in their team.

  7. Grrrumpy Miner Says:

WTG big Pelf……good way to start the season.

  8. Manny Says:

    Ibañez!

  9. Havoc Says:

I’ve gotta agree with Grrrumpy Miner. I hate it when “fans” leave the game early. Sticking with the team through the dark times is what makes games like today great.

  10. Grrrumpy Miner Says:

    Havoc,thanx for the back up

  11. Jim Says:

people always leave games early when their team is losing badly. sometimes even if they are winning to avoid traffic.

i dont care if its philly boston new york la or kansascity it happens, fairweather fans are everywhere

  12. Kurec Says:

GJ Braves crappy pitching more like it. They should be absolutely embarassed.

  13. Phil Says:

i never leave early eff that. i was at a dodgers phils game in 07 when they got pounded and i stated till the end. i am so mad i had class tonight and missed that epic come back

  14. Manny Says:

It’s like they don’t know the Phillies… we do this sh*t all the time!! haha

  15. Grrrumpy Miner Says:

Jimbo….been an Amazins fan for years..I remember being at a Fri nite game at shea back in 2000;And the Amazins were losing 8-1.Bot 8th the Amazins scored 10 runs and I stuck around while I had to be at work at 6:AM the next morning.Last I checked, its a 9 inning game.

  16. Lolseriously Says:

“It’s like they don’t know the Phillies… we do this sh*t all the time!! haha”

Do what? Get games given to you by terrible pitching? How can you possibly be excited about such a terrible game.

  17. Manny Says:

We have great comebacks all the time, that’s what I said… I’ve been lucky to see some of those, especially last year: vs Giants and vs Astros… one of the best games ever, even if the stadium is half-empty

  18. Havoc Says:

There were quite a few clutch hits in that inning as well, crappy pitching not withstanding.

  19. Phil Says:

dont mets trolls have their own game to worry about? last i checked big pelf was looking awful. sucks too…hes on my fantasy team

  20. Grrrumpy Miner Says:

Pelf is pitching a stinker thus far and not long for this game.

  21. Phillies Overcome Seven Run Deficit to Avoid Sweep by Braves | Heard in the Cheap Seats Says:

[...] a three-game sweep at the hands of the Atlanta Braves, the Phillies fought back from a seven run deficit to secure a 12-11 win today at Citizen’s Bank Ballpa….  Atlanta starter Javier Vazquez left the game after six innings with a seven run lead only to [...]

  22. Tom G Says:

I hate to say it…but the Phils made some really poor off season moves…

    1) resigning Moyer
    2) not signing Lowe
    3) paying too much for Ibanez

I hope the consequences of those decisions do not cost us the NL EAST…but the PHILS should still have enough to pull through…however, the pitching concerns me…or lack there of…

    TOM

  23. Mazinman Says:

Never check the score of the Phillies game in a K mart. Its kinda awkward when you yell out “Holy !”when you check your smart phone for scores and what used to be a laugher suddenly changed into a win.

What a comeback. Glad to see that even with the changes in the offseason this team still has its heart.

  24. Ben Says:

Yeah I think the good feelings of the championship really got to their head in resigning Moyer- dude was great last year but everyone seems to forget that he had an ERA slightly above 5 the year before, so it’s really a crapshoot with him and seeing as he’s, what, 46, I’m gonna say it’ll be up in that 5 range this year.

I think Amaro’s great job of signing a lot of the guys to deals though, especially locking up howard and hamels, saves him some face in respect to the bad moves. However I would much rather see the younger and better Bobby Abreu out there in left field for that nice 5 million dollar deal he signed rather than still be paying Ibanez 10 mill when he’s almost 40 and just causing a roadblock on the roster when guys like Brown and Mayberry will be ready to go.

  25. Amanda Orr Says:

I was the game.. Stayed for the whole thing! Nice comeback.. Braves bullpen pitchers just couldnt find the strike zone.

  26. Pat Burrell Says:

Thanks for the applause today. I’ll miss the Left Field ticket holders. It’s OK to let me go now. You are in good hands with Ibanez. Please stop yelling stupid things at Raul like “you need to become a leader now” and “Pat would have gotten that ball”.

  27. Chuck P Says:

I made a comment last night… I said that they needed an ugly win… this is exactly what I was talking about. These types of games (the ones they have no business winning) are the games that start our rallies. I have no doubt that tonight’s game is going to be a springboard. Say what you want, this team still has it. They will scrap to the end and that’s what makes them so special. Starting pitching was awful but it’s not like these guys forgot how to pitch overnight… they feed off of the everyday players and what is going on around them. Cole comes back soon, we stole a win and everyone can sleep a little easier. I love Ibanez… been happy about that one since day one. 5th in the AL in RBI’s last year and an MVP vote getter… he’s going to help this team immensely.

  28. Chase Mutley Says:

    WORLD PHUCKING CHAMPS!!! WOOOOO

  29. Eli Says:

    http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/blog/big_league_stew/post/Hey-Philly-booing-Adam-Eaton-and-his-ring-Belo?urn=mlb,154587

    Adam EAton sucks

  30. Jason B. Says:

I have to say that this again the media being lazy and not doing it’s homework when it comes to Philly fans. Yes, Eaton got booed loudly. Lack of class? Hardly. The guy stunk, was a big bum, and paying him 9 mil to play for another team probably cost us the oppurtunity to sign a big name free agent pitcher, example: derek Lowe. So let the National Media say what they want, but he deserved every second of it. Hell, I deserved a ring more than that Jackass. I hope the booing made him hurt inside.

  31. Amanda Orr Says:

    Mets win: 2-0
    Save no. 2 for K-Rod

  32. Griffin Says:

I did not see this one coming, God I love this team.

  33. Robbi P Says:

Krods save wasn’t pretty if Nix hit that ball a little hard game over first blown save for Krod. Putz and Krod didn’t look that dominating today at least

  34. Maverick Says:

Seriously… booing Adam Eaton wasnt right.. its not like the guy played for the Mets or was a defector like Rolen… that shit was lame.. granted he sucked but this was a time for celebration.. i wished we were above this

  35. Chris B Says:

absolutely amazing game. i sat in my seat only being entertained by the phanatic because i was so let down by what was happening. what a suprise after the seventh innning strech. me and my buddy swore that the pitch that hit ryan howard lit a fire within the team that started the run. needless to say, it was an amazing feeling much like being at game one of the nlcs on the championship run. can’t wait for charlie manuel bobble head night and may first against the mets. lets go phil’s.

  36. Brooks Says:

The rings are huge and very beautiful. Adam Eaton smiled at the crowd and waved. And, for those who dont know this, his 7.90 Spring training ERA got him a 5th starter position on the very weak Orioles.
I sat in sec 324, for only the second time and I am glad I have this ticket plan this year, nice seats for sure.
What a freaking comeback. Frankly, I was surprised that Howard did not punch one out. He twice flied out to left center, once pretty deep.
Did anyone see Gilick crying? Pat was blubbering too I heard…
Good time and it was not too cold!

  37. Chris B Says:

    oh and i boo’d eaton.

  38. Stuart Says:

I was at the phillies mets games last summer wiht the 7 hour rain delay and i waited it out, along with the other 5 thousand fans. phillies tied it in the ninth with a weryth home run but lost it in extras. still a great game to be at.

  39. Brooks Says:

Stuart, you were at that game? I heard there were some shenanigans going on during the rain delay? Streaker running around the field for a while?

  40. Grrrumpy Miner Says:

My question…who really deserves to be Boo’ed by Philly fans….adam Eaton or Santa Claus?

  41. Lolseriously Says:

Lit a fire? My god, were you people watching the same game? A team of 10 year olds could have faced the braves bull pen with the same success.

  42. Craig Says:

What a come back!! Switched game day off after Atlanta scored their 10th at the top of the 7th. Had to do a double take when i was watching ESPNAmerica later in the evening.

  43. Chase Mutley Says:

That BLS article is such a parody of itself. In it talks about the Philly rep in the media, and how maybe the media piles it on thick and finds things to write about and brings sh*t up from the 1960’s… and then it goes on to talk about Philly’s rep, finding things to write about and brings sh*t up from the 1960’s.

Imagine if the Sox defeated the Rays in Game 7 of the ALCS and then went on to trounce our beloved Phillies in the World Series. Fast forward to the ring ceremony at Fenway Park, PA announcer comes on, “Left Fielder, Maaaannnnyyy Rammmmiieeeerrrzzzzzz.” Yea, I can hear the “polite golf claps” now.

    Lazy. Media. Slow. Day.

Fast forward to the ring ceremony at Fenway Park, PA announcer comes on, “Left Fielder, Maaaannnnyyy Rammmmiieeeerrreeeezzzzzz.” Yea, I can hear the “polite golf claps” now. I can see Big League Stew, the TMZ of sports writing, calling out Boston fans for hitting below the belt on Manny’s special day.

    Lazy. Media. Slow. Day.

  45. Griffin Says:

I thought the booing of Eaton was pretty classless. I think he knows by now that the fans don’t like him and yesterday’s ceremony was a time for celebration. I give him credit for having the balls to show up.

  46. Chase Mutley Says:

A player with a $24 million, 3 year contract–serving 1.5 years of said contract before being kicked off the team for stinking up the joint– throwing the organization that is paying him and the fans that paid to watch him, under the bus in a printed interview is a far more classless act than a bunch of sports fans giving a player the Bronx cheer.

If Eaton just shut up and said “I stunk. I apologize to the fans and the team. I wish it would have worked out better.” — like Pat Burrell did or like Brett Myers did he would be looked at in an entirely different light. His incessant bitching that it wasn’t his fault is why people dislike him.

Most people get everything that they deserve in this life.

  47. Griffin Says:

Do you honestly believe that if Eaton said “I stunk” people would not have booed him? Pat Burrell was getting booed everyday for a 2 or 3 year period and like you said, he never bitched or moaned.

If Eaton hadn’t sucked so bad, the Phillies wouldn’t have traded for Blanton. Everything worked out, they won. I’m not defending Adam Eaton, he stunk, but he stunk before he got to the Phillies and he’ll stink now that he left the Phillies.

Yesterday was a celebration and I thought the booing was lowbrow (much like the Yankees fans booing Kenny Rogers at the 1996 parade). That’s just my opinion and I’m sure most people disagree.

  48. Georgie Says:

I agree with you Griffin, booing ANYONE at a WS ring ceremony is just not cool. Posters on here “doth protest too much”, giving long diatribes trying to justify/rationalize why it’s ok to boo Eaton. There’s nothing that guy could do or say that would satisfy alot of Phillie fans, so why should he even try? Some of you guys have a very convenient memory bank, in that you will remember forever Eaton’s crappy performance, but how quickly you forgot during the first three games that the Phils are WFC.

  49. flyer Says:

The Phillies should send Adam Eaton a bill for the ring. I didn’t boo him, but I didn’t applaud either. It was his decision to show up. He had to expect the crowd would react the way they did.

  50. flyer Says:

Oh, and I stayed for the whole game. Never give up on this team! Sure the Braves bullpen sucked – it was as if none of them wanted to be the one to give up the Big Hit. But give the Phillies credit for patience and timely base hits in addition to all the walks. And it sure was fun to watch!

  51. Griffin Says:

I would have done what you did, flyer, I wouldn’t have booed, but I wouldn’t have clapped either. Let him get his ring in silence and cheer everyone else.

  52. Manny Says:

I would’ve booed the hell out of him… It’s like an automatic switch in my brain in which only bad things come out upon hearing the word “Eaton.” That said, I NEVER, ever booed a guy like Pat. It’s just different… I get offended mostly with what player’s say, not particularly with their performance… Those things really irritate me, like Eaton’s comments during that interview and J-Roll’s comments on the fan’s last year.

Whether you’d boo someone like Eaton or not, it all boils down to a quick split-second decision you make. I don’t see why it’s bad if you do, or bad if you don’t.
