Gameday: Phillies (1-2) At Rockies (2-1)

Philadelphia Phillies (1-2) at Colorado Rockies (2-1)
Cole Hamels vs. Jason Marquis

Time: 4:10 p.m. at Coors Field, Denver
Weather: Mostly sunny, 53
TV: The Comcast Network
Twitter: Phillies Nation

The Phillies woke up Wednesday night, as the offense erupted in the seventh inning against the Braves and won a thriller, 12-11, to close out a 1-2 opening to the 2009 season. Now they hit the Rocky Mountains, where the Phillies reversed their fortunes in 2009 after a tough performance in the 2008 postseason. They swept the Rockies in Denver last season, and this year look to do the same. It starts today with the season debut of Cole Hamels.

The Phillies ace hasn’t pitched a game that counts since the final game of the 2009 campaign, the championship-winning game five of the World Series. Since he has labored over elbow tightness and sudden stops in his practice. He says he is fine, however.

The Rockies will counter with Jason Marquis, who has bounced around the majors a bit. He went 11-9 with a 4.53 ERA last season for the Cubs. The right-hander is 3-0 with a 2.51 ERA in five Coors Field starts, however.

The Phils offense awoke thanks to Raul Ibanez, who had two hits in Wednesday’s win: An RBI single and a two-run home run. He also scored three runs.

Your gameday beer: Here’s 14′ER ESB from Avery Brewing in Colorado. An Extra Special (or Extra Strong Bitter) beer, the 14′ER smells like a hefeweizen but tastes like a combination bitter and sweet beer. So it’s not as strong as you’d think, making it a perfect Friday-in-April beer: Bitter, spring smell, light enough to have a few. Enjoy it with some clams.

Go Phillies!

tv: comcast network. as in the network formerly known as CN8? because it isn’t listed on the digital cable listings. they just have paid programming BS listed on there. they better be showing the damn game

  2. ryan Says:

btw: i think we should smoke marquis today. he’s doomed in Colorado. I look for Ryan Howard to hit atleast one homer today. 3 or 4 for the series wouldn’t surprise me. if he doesn’t hit atleast 2 i will be surprised.

  3. Donny Dutch Says:

    PHILLIES WORLD CHAMPIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    YYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAA!

  4. Tim Malcolm Says:

Yes, that’s correct. The network formerly known as CN8.

  5. Don M Says:

How is it that Comcast’s very on Channel… doesn’t come in High-Def??

Or have they upgraded since last year? I used to get PISSED when the Sixers-Bucks game would be in HD and I’d have to watch a Phillies game that was fuzzy due to low-resolution on a big screen TV.

Phillies win today 9-5 … Utley goes yard..

  6. Phan in TN Says:

doing MLB TV with rockies announcers

MLB TV sucks this year with quality

  7. Gary Says:

CN8 is out over here right now, am I alone, or is Comcast really this awful?

  8. Gavin Says:

Does anyone know if MLB Extra Innings carries the Phillies broadcast? During the free preview all 4 games I’ve seen have been the opponents brodcast crew. I’m not buying it if I cant hear harry.

  9. Georgie Says:

I finally found the game on FSN, in HD but not the Phils announcers.

  10. Travis Says:

Top of 1st: Rollins leads off with a single. Victorino grounds out to move Rollins to second. Utley walks on 5 pitches. Howard on a 3-2 pitch grounds out ito a double play to end the inning. Rollins and Utley left on base. gotta bring those guys in.

  11. Brian Michael Says:

I’m watching on MLB.tv with Harry and Wheels. You might be able to change that stream.

Also on a related note, Jason Marquis’ trashy brother once threw a beer at me back at the Vet. I was giving it to Marquis for just allowing a homer. We got taken to the jail and he got busted. I always hope Jason gets rocked when he pitches, especially today.

  12. Johnny Snowden Says:

nice to see rollins lead off with a hit, shame howard couldn’t bring him home.

  13. Don M Says:

    MASTERS UPDATE: (if anyone cares)

Chad Campbell, and Kenny Perry are both -9 after two rounds.

Anthony Kim shot a 65 today, to put him in Tie-4th place at -4.

Tiger Woods is -2 after two rounds.

  14. Gary Says:

Is today the first time this season that we got out of the first without a homerun being allowed? I think it is.
    Time to celebrate.

  15. Tim Malcolm Says:

Nice piece of hitting by Johnny Wacko.

  16. Don M Says:

MLB.com GAMEDAY link has pitch speeds listed for Hamels..

Fastballs to the first batter were at 85mph..
about 10-15 pitches later, he got the Fastball up to 89 mph on the pitch that ended the 1st inning

12 pitches, 7 for strikes.. 2 ground-outs, 1 hit (the stolen base).. runner than thrown-out at 3rd in a Fielder’s Choice, 1 pickoff on the runner who had reached on FC.

  17. Fuhs Says:

Nice defensive plays in the first to eliminate baserunners.

  18. Greg Says:

I must say that I’m not feeling good about seeing Cole’s fastball sitting in the mid-high 80s (according to mlb gameday). Hopefully it will improve as the game/season goes on and isn’t an indication of something season damaging.

  19. Jason Says:

CN8 is out in South Jersey.

    No link on http://www.justin.tv.

anyone have any other advice for links? Gotta watch Kid Cole make his first start.

  20. Fuhs Says:

Feliz makes the sacrifice to run Werth in. Phils 1-0

  21. Don M Says:

89 is alright in his first start of the year.. hopefully he’s hitting 91-92 this game, maybe by like the 3rd inning

  22. Johnny Snowden Says:

    hell yeah manufacturing runs.

  23. Jason Says:

where can we see this game on tv if we live in the philly area?

  24. Tim Malcolm Says:

Stop with the first pitch nonsense, Jimmy. He’ll never change though,

  25. Manny Says:

Just got home.. good to see we haven’t allowed any runs in the first 2 innings…

Georgie, you said this game was on HD? On MLB Extra Innings??

  26. Tim Malcolm Says:

I’m pretty sure the old CN8.

  27. Greg Says:

Love that: Jimmy gets out on the first pitch then Shane walks on four pitches. Can’t gift wrap outs

  28. Johnny Snowden Says:

I’m really glad our boys are makin Marquis throw pitches.

  29. Johnny Snowden Says:

    well vic and utley anyway

  30. Manny Says:

Why wouldn’t Hamels throw outside the strike zone in this AB?

  31. Manny Says:

    Fuc*ing Marquis

  32. Tim Malcolm Says:

    This is all garbage.

  33. Tim Malcolm Says:

I don’t say this often, but go f*** yourself, Hurdle.

  34. Fuhs Says:

Rocky pitcher knocks in a run. 1-1

  35. Greg Says:

For those of us at work, what happened on the batter interference?

  36. Manny Says:

I get this feeling that Hamels is more concerned about his pitch count than actually throwing good pitches…

  37. Johnny Snowden Says:

    yeah that was just weird.

  38. Fuhs Says:

Runner “left the base lines”. Miracle call for Hamels. Probably prevented a run on the next hit

  39. Manny Says:

    NOT GOOD

  40. Phan in TN Says:

    fricken MLB TV is unwatchable

will listen to audio in the morning.

continue on without me. i’ll catch up.

  41. Tim Malcolm Says:

    Just as I thought.

  42. Fuhs Says:

Helton grounds a run in. 1-2

  43. Manny Says:

Hamels gave up a home run like 3 minutes ago Fuhs… 4-1… and now a double

  44. Fuhs Says:

    Atkins HR 1-4

  45. Manny Says:

    And now a triple… geez

  46. CT Says:

    :-(

  47. Fuhs Says:

Sounds like my mlb.tv is a couple minutes behind then

  48. Paul Says:

I am getting a little concerned about Hamels. I have read that he has no velocity right now…

  49. Manny Says:

Ok.. I won’t post to avoid ruining the “fun”

  50. Havoc Says:

Ouch… gonna need the offense to really step up until our rotation gets the bugs worked out.

  51. Johnny Snowden Says:

okay that was a brutal inning. I suppose it coulda been worse with a runner on third.

  52. tim mccarver sucks Says:

    not a good inning.

  53. Havoc Says:

I believe/hope/pray that Hamels’ velocity problems are because he didn’t get enough work in spring training.

  54. Travis Says:

Damn this. It was 0-2 on the #8 Barmes he keeps on fouling and then doubles. 1-2 on Marquis he has an rbi single. Fowler out on batter inteference. So the Spilborghs doubles. 2nd and 3rd 1 out. Helton hits an rbi ground out. Spilborghs to 3rd out. So we’ll be out of the inning down 2-1? wrong. Hamels goes beserk after that. Allows a 2 run bomb to Atkins. Then a ground rule double to Hawpe then a rbi triple to Tulowitzki. Ianetta finally pops out. 5ER in 3IP so far Hamels. Starting pitching for us hasn’t looked. To get back to .500 today we’ll need another comeback. We can’t hope all the time that the team in front of us will blow up like the Mets got better this we have to get ahead and put pressure on the teams below. here some statements as of now: We need to bring in runners on base. Starting Pitching hasn’t looked good. Hamels in nowhere the real Hamels yet. he needs work. We should be battering Marquis right now. Boy 4th inning already. Quick game going. After the 4th gonna go outside or watch tv or eat something then gonna come back see how phils are doing near 6:15.

  55. Evan Says:

Werth with 2 doubles against a righty is a good thing.

  56. Georgie Says:

    Well, that wasn’t pretty…

Manny, I have it on directv ch 683, FSN, whatever that is, in HD but Rockies announcers, who weren’t too bad until Cole got rocked.

  57. Travis Says:

Pedro feliz with two “out” rbi’s. Sac Fly and Ground out. Ruiz grounds out to end inning. Well werth looks good. 5-2 after 3.5 Innings. Hamels needs to go scoreless rest of the way.
Barmes, Marquis and fowler up. That’s how the 3rd inning started. Gonna go after 4.5 innings. wanna see rollins.

  58. Manny Says:

Hmmm.. thanks Georgie.. I have RCN with MLB Extra Innings.. I have the game on FSN with the Rockies announcers but no HD… BIG DIFFERENCE.

  59. Manny Says:

    Get Hamels outta there!

  60. Manny Says:

    Make it HAPPen

  61. william Says:

hamels fastball avg 86 mph anyone else worried about that little stat ?

  62. Johnny Snowden Says:

anyone else having an awesome afternoon?

  63. Evan Says:

pitchers spot is up next, if he could get that out we could start with dobbs and happ would take over the 5th fresh

  64. Travis Says:

NL East today: Mets at Marlins 7:10pm ET. Nationals at Braves 7:30pm ET. Starts 0-2 again on Barmes and this time…..great. After 0-2 takes 4more pitches and singles. Marquis up. Just of notice. 6 hits for the Rocks have come to the left side of the field except for two doubles. nothing in center. Sac Bunt by Marquis. Can’t allow Barmes to score. come on hamels. Fowler up next. Fowler grounds out but moves Barmes to 3rd. Man on 3rd 2outs. Can hamels get spilborghs out. What the rockies did last inning, the phils should learn from that. How to bring runners in with 2 outs or any outs and in the same at-bat get yourself also on base so the next guy gets a chance for a rbi. Full count and oh great. 2 OUTS HAMELS COME ON! Spilborghs doubles. 4 doubles by rocks today. 6-2. just like i said it. hamels clearly needs time and work. great helton singles. Like i said the phils should be doing this. Score runners that are on base and get yurself on base so the next guy can bring you in. 7-2 Rockies . Nothing to see here folks. Unless the fightins make another comeback Phils go to 1-3 to start the year. and atkins singles with 2 outs. 7runs 11 hits, 1 walk for Rockies through 3.2 innings. yikes

  65. Manny Says:

I’m not that worried about the speed… but very worried about his command… it’s been bad

  66. Evan Says:

    nm double switch

bruntlett at third instead of dobbs?

  67. Johnny Snowden Says:

yeah manny, leavin em up to righties and down on lefties …

  68. BurrGundy Says:

Hamels is a fragile southpaw. Good pitcher. But no ace of a staff. An ace is durable. I would not be surprised if Hamels’ best years are behind him. I pray for his return to dependability. We need a Roy Halliday.

  69. Manny Says:

Regarding the velocity, I did see him hit 90 in the 3rd inning… His command is the big problem here.

  70. Johnny Snowden Says:

i feel where you’re coming from burrgrundy but … even aces have bad days … especially if they haven’t pitched in about a month.

  71. Chase Says:

    Slow down there Gundy

  72. Travis Says:

Feliz and Hamels are done for the day. Eric Bruntlett now in 3rd base and batting 9th. Happ pitching and 7th hitting wise. Hamels pitching line today: 3.2IP, 11H, 7R, 7ER, 1BB, 1K, 1HR, 1Pickoff, 82pitches(54strikes,28balls), ERA:17.18. His record likely to go to 0-1. Velocity was ok, not much to worry about that. Should come along the more he pitches. Command was Horrible today. After getting ahead on lots of batters, he threw pitches that were fouled alot and then he gave a pitch that was easy to hit. 7-2 Rockies after 4IP. 15 outs and down by 5. Can phils come back??

  73. mike s. Says:

Burr GUndy did I read your post right?

    NO STAFF ACE?

He pitched an insane amount of innings last year. had no run support, and won 14 games.
won the MVP in two series and had an ERA of 3.09

    best days are behind him??
    ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

he didnt stretch his arm out AT ALL this spring.

it’s one start, his first after a short spring training. he just wasnt ready

    calm down.

dont all of a sudden turn on the guy and say he isnt a staff ace..

that might be one of the dumbest things ive ever read

  74. Manny Says:

Hamels will be fine… I just hope he’s doesn’t take too long because we can’t afford to lose these April games.

  75. Travis Says:

just of note former leigh valley iron pig pitcher kris benson who is the #5 starter in the rangers rotation allowed 8 runs today. Rangers lost at Tigers 15-2. Smoked.

  76. Travis Says:

Lineout and two groundouts. 1-2-3 phils go down in 5th. Need a 1-2-3 inning here by Happ. Tulowitzki, Ianetta and barmes who’s batting for the 3rd in 3innings up next. Deep Fly out by tulowitzki. you know no game is easy in April for the phils and it wont’ be when we head to D.C for 3 games and then host padres for 4games. Phils are a below average team in spring training and April. Ianetta flies out. Clint Barmes up now. Finally we get him out. 1-2-3 inning by Happ. just what we needed. Deep fly out by barmes though. Would’ve been a no-doubter at CBP. Utley(0for1 K,BB), Howard(0for2) and Werth(2for2 2doubles,2runs) are up for Phils in the 6th inning. Still 7-2 Rocks. 18.2IP so far by our starters and 11.1IP by our relivers. And 3 more IP at the least. So that’ll be 14.1IP.

  77. Manny Says:

We’re playing with fire… our bullpen is getting taxed heavily with these starts… thank god for those off days, but we certainly won’t be able to keep up if our SP doesn’t improve in a week

  78. Travis Says:

Utley leads off with a single to begin the sixth. Lets see if the Phillies can bring him in. No we can’t. Howard grounds into a double play for the 2nd time today. Cmon Werth. marquis who has struggled in the past vs the phils doing a nice job. you know the main reason they’ve brought marquis here because unlike most pitchers Marquis pitches well at Coors Field. 3-0 2.51ERA in 5 career starts at Coors Field. Werth on fire today. 3for 3. Hits a two out single. Raul ibanez up to bat. Cmon raul you started the comeback against the braves start it again vs the rocks. After the pitching coach visits marquis, ibanez at the Plate. And he doesn’t do the job. Flies out to left. After 5.5 innings at Coors Field Rockies lead 7-2. Pitchers spot, Fowler and Spilborghs up for Phils. could be last inning for Happ as pitchers spot in phils lineup first in the 7th.

  79. Sean A Says:

Unfortunately, that’s how i thought Hamels would do since it is a tune up start for him really.. So it seems it will be up to our bullpen to keep up the good start their having and keep this game from becoming any worse.. And lets hope the offense can wake up soon and get something started to creep us closer into this game!!!

  80. Tim Malcolm Says:

Heh. So hard to get excited about this team in April. So hard.

  81. Sean A Says:

Also, anybody got ideas why Coste replaced Ruiz?? And why is Bruntlett at 3rd and not Feliz??

  82. Manny Says:

It doesn’t have to be this way, Tim… I thought they would come out running this time around, but they look complacent.

  83. Manny Says:

Bruntlett is at 3rd because they did the Double Switch… since Hamels was due up next in the lineup..

  84. mike s. Says:

    they shouldnt skip Park..
every starter has gotten taxed out there…let him go. Maybe he gives you 7 solid and gives the pen a rest.

  85. Travis Says:

Marquis will pitch in the 7th as Clint Hurdle lets him bat. And guess what Marquis doubles. No surprise about Marquis 2for2 today with a single, double, sac bunt, rbi and a run scored. Lifetime career hitter with a .210BA avg, 5homers and 41 rbi’s coming into today. Fowler out on sac bunt. Marquis to 3rd with one out. Spilborghs up and he strikes out swinging. Let me tell you something. In August this will be our Starting Rotation: 1. Cole Hamels 2. Brett Myers 3.Joe Blanton 4. Chan Ho Park 5. J.A Happ/ Todd helton up with marquis on 3rd and 2outs. 6 fouls by Helton before he flies out to Left. The Pitchers spot, Ruiz and Bruntlett up for Phils in the 7th. Still 7-2 Rockies. Coste I think will get start cause night game tomorrow 8:10pm ET after today’s afternoon tilt.

  86. Geoff Says:

Cole Hamels had absolutely nothing today. Why did they even start him? Like we said earlier, if you cant expect him to meet the minimum requirement for an acceptable start, and you know hes injured, then why bother? There was no reason to start him if youre going to rush hum back from injury like this…he had NO command today. JA Happ has pitched very well today though, 2.1 scoreless innings. We all know Hamels will eventually become his usual self again, but this team has gotten ABSOLUTELY no starting pitching this season so far. Brett Myers and CHP have to come up with strong performances this weekend. Thank goodness they stockpiled all those relief pitchers in AAA, right? Smart move, because this bullpen will need callup reenforcements by June if the starting pitching does not improve – and I mean very soon.

  87. Manny Says:

Bottom of the 7th: time to wake up!

  88. Travis Says:

Tomorrow: Brett Myers(0-1, 6.00) vs Jorge De La Rosa(0-0, 0.00) 8.10PM ET. Myers 6-0 with 3.19 era against rocks all time. Rosa 0-6 with a 16+ era all time vs phils. but those are in the past. Tomorrow might tell a different story or still the same story could continue on

  89. Geoff Says:

I agree, the only person Im going to have to be convinced will recover from his bad start is Moyer…JA Happ looks pissed and has been on a mission to return to the rotation, and he looks like hes going to earn a start soon if he keeps this performance up.

  90. Geoff Says:

Well if they cant light up De La Rosa then its emergency time…that guy SUCKS…I mean, hes really a bad starting pitcher.

  91. Travis Says:

I’m done fore today. Watch Phils tom. To be honest dont’ think phils will make comeback but hopefully i eat their dust. Cmon Phils. Come back later. Go Phils

  92. Gavin Says:

    Prediction:

Postgame….Phillies announce P Cole Hamels goes on the 15 day DL (elbow).

To say his command was the only problem is only part of the story. Hamels was trying to pitch like a guy with his best stuff and obviously he didn’t. I only saw him above 87 twice (90, 89), Almost all of his FB were 85-87.

I’m not an alarmist, but something aint right. I know he’s still working through stuff, but I dont remember him throwing slower than most high school pitchers this time last year.

  93. BurrGundy Says:

Mike S. I hope you are correct and I am wrong. I am really pissed today and maybe my emotions have me by the toes. I just wish Cole was really durable, like a Carlton. Perhaps I am way off base, I agree.

  94. Gavin Says:

Happ will be in the rotation next go round after Hamles goes on the DL.

  95. Manny Says:

Ruiz has a right oblique strain.. damn it.. I think that’s what they said

  96. Jeff Says:

Watching this entire rotation pitch like crap is pretty sad. I think we should pitch park tomorrow, and get something fresh Myers will most likely pitch like he did Sunday.

  97. Manny Says:

Myers has been our best starter so far… BY FAR… I think he’ll be good tomorrow… and I’m counting on Chan Ho to give us a win, too.

  98. Manny Says:

Well, Jimmy is SUCKING big time.. What happened? I can’t see the fire… he definitely had it at the WBC

  99. Tim Malcolm Says:

Three double plays by Howard today. Great.

  100. Manny Says:

and Howard has hit for THREE double plays today… pathetic

  101. Geoff Says:

Guys like Carlton are few and VERY far between. Cole has great potential and has BEGUN to realize it, but hes not Steve Carlton. Carlton was arguably one of the five greatest pitchers in baseball history – certaintly the very best Left-Hander. Only Nolan Ryan , Randy Johnson, and Roger Clemens (doesnt count – steroids) have more Strikeouts than Carlton. Carlton ranks 11th all time in Wins. 14th in shutouts (Grover Cleveland Alexander is 2nd with 90) Top 75 all time in Complete Games, 12th fewest runs allowed ever, and a great stat for endurance here: 9th all time in Innings Pitched.

SO yeah, um, Coles got a monumental task ahead of him to catch up to this guy. Carlton was a different pitcher, used his slider as an out pitch – and his slider was even nastier than Lidge’s. Hamels needs to be himself, but for now – I agree. 15 day DL. Dont even screw around, just get him some rest. He didnt look right today. Let Happ start next time around – hes earned it.

Postscript: RYan Howard has been absolutely terrible at the plate today 3 GIDPs!

  102. Geoff Says:

unless im forgetting if theres a better left hander. some of the ancient pitchers i cant recall whether they were lefties or not,..

  103. Greg V. Says:

Stopped watching a long time ago. Bottom line, Hamels was not ready for today. Put him on the DL, let him rest up and get a rehab start in or two and then send him back out there. Nobody needs this to happen again.

  104. Geoff Says:

This has been a terrible performance today….all around really except for JA Happ & Clay Condrey.

  105. Manny Says:

    Don’t forget Werth, Geoff

  106. Greg B Says:

Where’s Park? Someone needs to stop this insanity.
News Flash: Durbin hasnt been able to get anyone out since August ‘08.

  107. shawn victorino Says:

well…..we need a HUGE rally just like the other night, it can happen!! (ha), but whatever the outcome is w/hamels, the rotation needs to take a deep breath and get back on track. i know its just the beginning of the year, and im not saying OMG THEY ARE DONE! I have all the faith in the world with these guys, I know things will turn around. hamels got smacked around and the bats were non existant, but…heres to better games! PHAITH

  108. Georgie Says:

I hate to say this, but other than the comeback the other day, these games have been a snoozefest!

  109. Manny Says:

Home run Werth! Good to see that… 4-4!

  110. Geoff Says:

well yeah werth is 4-4 with 2 dbls, 1 single, and 1 HR….forgot to mention that. great game for werth.

  111. Manny Says:

Just imagine what would’ve happened if Howard would’ve not ended all those innings with double plays with Werth’s solid bat behind him.

  112. Tim Malcolm Says:

Good to see after one poor start that I pretty much handicapped that people want to write off Hamels. Get a clue, people.

  113. Greg B Says:

    Trade Hamels for Spilbroughs!

  114. Geoff Says:

Hes injured, and if hes injured theres no reason to start him in that situation. If hes injured, he needs to rest up. He was throwing meatballs all game. Hell obviously regain his form at some point. But he wont do it if hes not healthy…

  115. Greg B Says:

Here’s hoping that Myers can play stopper tomorrow and take us deep into a game. I would like to see Park have a start.
