rockies.gifPhiladelphia Phillies (1-2) at Colorado Rockies (2-1)
Brett Myers (0-1, 6.00 ERA) vs. Jorge De La Rosa

Time: 8:10 p.m. at Coors Field, Denver
Weather: Rain, 46
TV: Comcast SportsNet
Twitter: Phillies Nation

So far in 2009, the Phillies have barely showed the makings of a repeat champion. In fact, they’ve proved to likely play the worst baseball in the league. But the Phils are slow starters, and a Saturday night contest in Denver has the potential for good things. Brett Myers takes the hill against Jorge De La Rosa at Coors Field. That’s if they get the game going.

Rain is in the forecast at Coors, and the temperature will only be in the low 40s at its highest, which doesn’t bode well for the Phillies bats. Still, they hit De La Rosa well, as evidenced last season (3.1 IP, 6 ER — the 20-run game). The key to beating him is getting runners on base. Patience, patience, patience.

Myers, meanwhile, is coming off a first start where he was plagued by the longball. Atlanta hitters crushed him three times, and as his second start is in Denver, it doesn’t seem particularly promising that he can reverse the trend. The Phillies bullpen has pitched, well, however, except for Chad Durbin, who surrendered a few more runs Friday afternoon against the Rockies.

Jayson Werth had the hot bat Friday, going 4-for-4 and missing a triple for the cycle. Instead he hit two doubles, homered and singled. Hopefully his skills can rub off to other Phils.

Your gamenight beer: Pauwel Kwak is a Belgian strong pale ale, which is exactly what you think it is: A bitter, dry but complex beer that you shouldn’t have in large quantities. It tastes of raisins, toffee, caramel. Kind of like a country candy of a beer, if you so choose. I recommend a pulled pork sandwich tonight.

Extra!: At 7 p.m., ESPN is airing the NCAA Men’s Hockey National Championship Game. It pits the Red Hawks of Miami (Ohio) and the Terriers of Boston University. My alma mater, Boston University, is gunning for its fifth national title, led by Hobey Baker award winner Matt Gilroy and finalist Colin Wilson. The Terriers are the top-ranked team in the country heading into the game. Tune in before the Phils game, and if things get hairy in Denver, tune back in.

Go Terriers!

Go Phillies!

  1. Manny Says:

I’d put Werth back at the No.2 spot… let him bat and get on base, then Chase could drive him in

  2. Johnny Snowden Says:

sup gang. got the mlb gameday audio workin again phew! any other outa towners feel lost without scott franzke’s voice?

  3. DeadGMWalking Says:

    Manny,

I’d like to slot Werth into the two hole, but De La Rosa’s running heater and curve are really tough on the lefties; the last thing I need to see is two of the three lefties going down on strikes a few times tonight.

Then again, if you want to slot Vic in the 5 hole as a free swinger behind Howard I’m on board.

  4. Johnny Snowden Says:

well at least it got broken up.

  5. Johnny Snowden Says:

alright … two up two down.

  6. Johnny Snowden Says:

    that was pretty.

  7. DeadGMWalking Says:

Yeah, Myers looks sharp early on. Aside from the high change and a fastball that missed pretty badly he looked like he has it all working tonight.

  8. DeadGMWalking Says:

95 on the black. Sheesh, nothing Raul could do with that pitch.

  9. Keith Says:

    let’s go Phillies!

  10. DeadGMWalking Says:

Cant get away with a pitch like that when its in the high 80’s….

  11. Keith Says:

    oh here we go again

  12. sighmyers Says:

there goes another bomb against myers :(

  13. Todd Says:

The records are wrong at the top of the article. 1-3/3-1, not 1-2/2-1.

  14. DeadGMWalking Says:

To beat De La Rosa the good guys have to be patient and let him get himself into trouble.

If they can be aggressive in the zone and foul balls off a slinger like De La Rosa is going to make a mistake from the stretch when he has a man on base.

  15. Matt Says:

Can we get one pitcher to give up less than or equal to 1 run through 3?
    apparently not

  16. DeadGMWalking Says:

Yeah baby! Lets hope the wheels come off.

  17. DeadGMWalking Says:

Million dollar arm and a ten cent head, gotta love it.

  18. Johnny Snowden Says:

    juiced for the big man!!

  19. DeadGMWalking Says:

    RHYNO!! 3-2!

  20. sighmyers Says:

    BOOOM!! what a moon shot

  21. Travis Says:

Yes sir re. The big man delivers! Bases clearing double gives phillies 3-2 lead. Almost a grand slamie. nice job howard.

  22. Keith Says:

    alright Howard! let’s score more!

  23. Travis Says:

Werth walks. Cmon Rbibanez!! Just of note Pat Burrell so far is 2for15 with the Rays. on full count ibanez grounds out. De La Rosa, Spilborghs and Smith, S are due up for Rockies in the bottom of the 3rd.

  24. Travis Says:

    Tomorrow: Chan Ho Park(0-0, 0.00) vs Aaron Cook(0-1, 23.14) 3:10pm ET

  25. Travis Says:

De La Rosa strikes out. NL East update: 2-2 Mets lead at 4-0 Marlins 8-2 Bottom 8th/ 0-4 Nationals trail at 3-1 Braves 4-3 Bottom 7th/ Ryan Spilborghs out on the first pitch hits a very deep fly ball for an out. A little more and that could’ve been gone, but it isn’t. Full count on Smith and called out on strikes. 1-2-3 down go Rocks in 3rd. Feliz, Coste and Myers up for Phillies in the 4th.

  26. Tim Malcolm Says:

In most parks, Howard’s shot might be a homer. At any rate, he’s swinging well. When he’s driving the ball far into the deepest part of the park, he’s on point.

  27. Travis Says:

Pedro Feliz up first. Gets ahead 3-1, but lines out to second on the next pitch. Chris Coste up. Too bad for Ruiz. on 15 day DL. Hamels starting on Thursday in the finale at Washington against the Nats. On 2-1 pitch Coste pops out to shortstop. 2up 2down. Now Brett myers bats. Nice job by Myers. Making De La Rosa throw pitches. Full count on myers now. But Myers strikes out swinging on a 93mph fastball. Big challenge for myers in the bottom of the 4th. Helton, Atkins and Hawpe and Tulowitzki if a man gets on. Can’t allow run(s) here.

  28. sighmyers Says:

SIGH come on keep it in the park :(

  29. Matt Says:

    why brett? why
    why
    5 hr on the season

  30. Mike D Says:

New drinking game: take a drink anytime Myers gives up a home run.

  31. Matt Says:

    hahaha
i might be drunk in 10 minutes

  32. Tim Malcolm Says:

Myers is a fastball/curveball pitcher. He’ll give up his share in homer parks. As long as he gives them up without men on.

  33. NJ Says:

headscratcher… Agree with you Tim but we’ve been here with Myers before. I’ll reserve judgement until he’s made enough starts to represent a body of work on the year but man that’s a lot of homers…

  34. Travis Says:

Todd Helton up first against Myers here in the 4th. Strikes out swinging. Here’s Atkins. 6 consecutive batters out since the homer allowed by Myers. Atkins gets ahead 3-1. Homerun!! Tie ball game. 3-3. 2nd homer of the year for Atkins both in these 2 games. Myers now has allowed 5 homers this year. 3 Sunday Night and 2 tonight. I said before big inning for myers and he allows a solo. So now Hawpe comes at bat. He grounds out. Tulowitzki comes up at the dish now. Hit a 2run bomb earlier off Myers. Myers still has homerun problems. Gives up way too many. 5K and 0BB good sign for Myers. 3ER, 2HR so far in 3.2IP not good. Tulowitzki making myers throw. Full count. On 9th pitch he walks him. First walk for Myers tonight. Nice at bat by Troy. Yorvit Torrealba up at bat. Troy Tulowitzki could be comeback player of year so far in 14 offical at bats he’s 5for14 (.357) with 3 homers and 5 rbis. And Torrealba flies out to centre. After 4innings of play here at Coors Field both teams are tied at 3. For the Phils in the 5th, top of order. Rollins, Victorino and Utley

  35. Tim Malcolm Says:

    WATCH THIS HOCKEY GAME!!!!!! WOOOO!

  36. Travis Says:

Rollins at the dish. Gets ahead 3-0. On 3-1 pitch Rollins grounds out. Ah….
Victorino at the plate now. 2 singles today for the Hawaiin. He flies out pretty deep to right field. Chase Utley at the dish. De La Rosa who’s been hammered by the Phillies before has done a nice job tonight keeping the game tied. Utley gives the Phillies their 5hit of the night. A single and Howard’s up. Cmon rhyno!!! Rhyno ahead in the count 3-1. full count after swinging strike. And Howard delivers. A single puts runners on corners for Werth. De La Rosa 99 pitches and with the righty Werth at bat, De La Rosa is done for the day. Ryan Speier replaces De La Rosa. Back after a while folks.

  37. Johnny Snowden Says:

    holy crap wadda hit

  38. Keith Says:

    nice triple by Werth

  39. Matt Says:

    jesus christ myers…

  40. Keith Says:

we give up way too many homeruns this year

  41. Brian of CO Says:

How many home runs is Brett going to give up this season? He has already given up 6 homes runs this season! SIX. Its kind of a problem when 80% of all the hits you give up are Home Runs. Its early, but this is starting to get old. Hopefully the Offense has found their groove, Werth is looking and Howard is starting to come on, so thats good.

  42. Myers Liars Says:

    6 hrs in 2 starts…
I get such a headache watching myers

  43. Mike D Says:

    *Takes drink*

As of now, I’m working on other drinking games to consider when the Phillies play.

  44. Travis Says:

With bases loaded, utley can’t deliver as he grounds out to the pitcher. 5-4 phillies after 5.5 innings. Jorge De La Rosa: 4.2IP, 6H, 5R, 5ER, 2BB, 3K ERA: 9.64

  45. Fran Says:

Congrats Tim on BU. That was a hell of a game

  46. Brian of CO Says:

I have to say, GREAT plays by Utley with the diving stop to get Helton, GREAT HEADS UP bare hand catch after the bobble for Coste, and again by Utley. This is what happens when we dont give up HR’s. I am not concerned about our Fielding right now.

  47. Johnny Snowden Says:

that was a helluva play for coste

  48. Travis Says:

Brett myers starts the 6th against Helton who grounds out. Atkins at bat now. He pops out to Coste in foul territory. Hawpe now bats and he grounds out. 1-2-3 Rocks go down in the 6th. Myers at 93 pitches. Howard, Werth and Ibanez coming up for the Phillies in the 7th inning. Other NL East Action: Mets win at Marlins 8-4. Mets now 3-2 and Marlins 4-1. Braves win at home against Nationals 5-3. Braves now 4-1 and Nationals are 0-5.

  49. Johnny Snowden Says:

hey tim .. i agree with mike d … maybe we can come up with sme “official” pn drinking rules that maybe we can vote on.

  50. Travis Says:

Howard starts the 7th with a deep fly out to LF. Werth lines out to CF and i’ll call it a night folks. Hopefully phils win tonight tomorrow and the 09 World Series. See ya tom. Park vs Cook tom 3:10pm eT. But before I leave Raul ibanez home run number 2 for the phils. 6-4 phillies. last i check burrell hitting .157 0hrs 0rbi. Ibanez .211 2hrs 4rbi go phils

  51. Chuck P Says:

    LET’S GO PHILS!!

  52. philsphan Says:

I don’t remember the last time the Phillies had this many 2-out hits and RBIs.

  53. Fran Says:

now the bats are coming alive

  54. Keith Says:

    Phillies!

  55. Keith Says:

nice win, Victorino to get the Ashburn?

  56. Johnny Snowden Says:

    damnright lidge

  57. Fran Says:

Howard had a pretty solid game too, he could get the Ashburn

  58. Mike D Says:

We can always make the drinking games positive. They can go either way.

Johnny Snowden, you’re support is much respected and appreciated.

  59. Johnny Snowden Says:

no prob mike d! lets get this thing started! my rule proposal: chug a beer everytime howard steals a base or hits a triple

  60. Geoff Says:

Nice win…Myers only made three bad pitches really. Other than that he had the curveball going, and when he gets the curveball going and uses it frequently hes going to go deep into the game. Nice performance from Myers, I really cant get on him for hanigng a few bad pitches up there early in the season. Of course, when he records the win its ok to think that way…

the offense played well against a below avg starting pitcher. but what matters is they have a chance to get back to .500 now tomorrow

  61. rjb360 Says:

What’s with the hate for Myers? 7 innings, 4 runs, 4 hits is perfectly acceptable at Coors. 6:1 K:BB ratio so far. He’s had some unfortunate hits go out of the park, nothing to get worried about.

Best part of watching the Phils this year so far has been Howard’s improvement in his eye (only 3 SO’s in 5 games) and his glove. For once it looks like he really did put in the work in the offseason. Also, Feliz has been looking much better at the plate and I’m not afraid of Werth against rightys anymore.

Dare I say I’m feeling good about CHP tomorrow?

  62. Chase Mutley Says:

Yea, I like your attitude rjb360…howards improving, blows delgado outta the wata…….yea boi. Mets finishing third, phillies first, im calling it now, phillies WORLD PHUCKING CHAMPS PART II…. Just LIKE ROCKY THERES GONNA BE 6 PARTS!

  63. Mark Says:

Phillies did the job tonight. I wish Utley stays at first. It took the bat out of Ryans hands. Something they have to talk about. Good win. Brett got stronger. Madison and Lidge. Just get them there….

  64. OZ Says:

what up ladies & gents,,,,,caught my first Marlins game tonight,,,Nolasco pitched well early, then the Mets started tearing him up. Marlins have been off to a great start, but young, young, young, lousy infield defense and bullpen is a real question mark.

after the game, concert on the field. DJ somebody, Pitbull & Flo Rida. i watched from the Marlins dugout steps. waaaay cool. about 10 ft away from Hanley at one point.

Catching the Phils when they’re in town two weekends from now.

    C’mon Park!!!

  65. Rob Says:

Tim, by the way, my two friends from high school are the hot dog and jesus in the BU fan section. GREAT GAME!
