Gamenight: Phillies (6-8) At Marlins (11-4)

Philadelphia Phillies (6-8) at Florida Marlins (11-4)
Brett Myers (1-1, 5.03 ERA vs. Josh Johnson (2-0, 2.91 ERA)

Time: 7:10 p.m. at Dolphin Stadium, Miami.
Weather: Windy, 76
TV: The Comcast Network
Twitter: Phillies Nation

Sitting at the top of the National League East? Those Florida Marlins, with a strong 11-4 record. They were just swept by the Pirates, so that seems even more impressive that they’re still seven games over .500. They’re doing it every way possible, but mostly with pitching and speed. The former will be displayed tonight in the form of Josh Johnson, who’s carrying a 2.91 ERA through three starts.

Luckily the Phils have hit Johnson well. Ryan Howard has two home runs off him and a .438 average. Chase Utley has a .385 average against Johnson. Of course, those things don’t seem to matter when the games are played – both have struggled the past few games, as the Phils were able to cull just two runs overall against the heavenly duo of Braden Looper and Dave Bush.

Brett Myers pitches for the Phils. He has struggled in the past against Florida, with professional hitter Jorge Cantu clipping him at 5-for-10 pace. All-universe hitter Hanley Ramirez is a lifetime .360 hitter against Myers.

Your gamenight beer: Bluebird Bitter is from the Coniston Brewing Co. in England. A bitter beer, it has hints of apple and caramel within its formula. This is a perfect night for an English bitter – warm but cooling late, clear and reflective. Time for the Phils to remember how to beat the Marlins and, yes, win baseball games.

Go Phillies!

  1. Sean P. Says:

Are the Phils on CN8 tonight? Don’t see them on the tv listings… it says college baseball Auburn vs. LSU??

  2. Sean P. Says:

    NM woo hooo there on!

  3. Mickey Says:

Yeah CN8/CNP. Pisses me off cause comcast doesnt have it in HD. I dont pay this much for cable to watch teevee in non-HD

  4. NJ Says:

    This is getting ridiculous now

  5. Geoff Says:

    What the freak?

Josh Johnson has some nasty looking stuff man, another sinkerballer that owns the phillies…this guy is GOOD.

meanwhile, another first inning homerun – Rich Dubee – SEYA PAL! somethings gotta be done about this and youre the pitching coach. this team has only had like 2 or 3 quality starts all year!!!!!!!!

  6. Doug Says:

Can we get through a FUC_ _ _ _ INNING with out giving up runs. Can Myers get anyone out. They dont hit, there pitching is aweful. Johnson had no problem throwing 10 pitches and getting out of the first. 40 pitches so far and counting. This team lost there focust.

  7. Geoff Says:

    NO OUTS!!!

  8. Geoff Says:

I think Johnson threw 9 pitches actually, lol.

  9. Griffin Says:

It’s too nice of a night to waste watching the Phillies get blown out. Watching this team play right now is just depressing, they’re a shell of their former selves.

  10. Georgie Says:

I don’t have the game again, sixers on, crap! Is there a score already?

  11. John Fire Says:

You know what? I’m just going to take a deep breath and enjoy being a fan… we won a WFC last year and I remember at different parts of the year I was freaking out because of poor play… well, they came back and won it all by the end, so I’m just going to relax, have faith and enjoy this beautiful sport…

  12. Geoff Says:

This Johnson guy has ALREADY had Tommy John surgery. Hes 6-7 and is throwing 95-97 MPH Sinkers for strikes and is commanding it…thats crazy man.

  13. Doug Says:

Im also tired of the back of our lineup. Feliz, Marson, Ruiz, these guys cant hit. After this series we will be back 8 games.

  14. Kyle Says:

And Rollins and Victorino? Look at the table-setters.

  15. Jenn Says:

3-0 Georgie, in case you were still wondering.

  16. Geoff Says:

Marson is a rookie, and hes hitting better than rollins and victorino right now, which isnt much…

nobody is going to look good against this guy. hes really good..

  17. Geoff Says:

this guys slider is NASTY. like almost lidge nasty

  18. Doug Says:

Very bad start. Be nice to see Howard hit a homer. Stairs has more as a pinch hitter. The Marlins have the best pitching in the division.

  19. Geoff Says:

Stairs is an ok pinch hitter. He has two PH HRs but hes also been blown away in key situations recently too.

Myers has settled in again. Johnson is capable of throwing no hitters during his career…so thats who were dealing with.

Myers has been their best starter, Blanton has pitched well too. But they dont have enough starting pitching right now. Hamels will come around. Park sucks, Moyer might as well retire…

  20. Georgie Says:

Thanks Jenn, I left my radio out in the rain a few too many times, now it’s impossible to listen to, and I don’t feel like checking that animated thingy.

  21. Jenn Says:

No problem! I’m beginning to think one of the best investments I’ve made is my daughter’s Hello Kitty radio/CD player. I use it more than she does, LOL.

  22. Johnny Snowden Says:

damn … 85 pitches so far with nobody out in the 5th

  23. Geoff Says:

    nice running catch by Raul

  24. Geoff Says:

WOW…Lou Marson just threw out Hanley Ramirez trying to steal third. Got him by a mile.

  25. Georgie Says:

    Ugh, I HATE that I can’t see this game….

Ovechkin just made a SICK play to put the Caps up 4-0. Superhuman stuff he does sometimes.

  26. Geoff Says:

I was checking out the renderings of the Marlins New Stadium….WOW. Retractible Roof, state of the art, really sick looking. Good excuse to take a weekend vacation down there for a series..

  27. Johnny Snowden Says:

now I’m by no means saying that myers inability to find the strike zone with the exception of an occasional beach ball is anyone but myer’s fault. But I’m just wondering how myers, moyer and co. are working with Marson, i just wonder how phils pitching would be going if ruiz hadn’t gotten hurt. Anybody heard anything? And that was a helluva play by j-roll!

  28. Gavin Says:

according to the game track on ESPN Myers has thrown about 10 pitches that were easily K’s, but were called balls.

  29. Georgie Says:

How can the Marlins afford a new stadium, don’t they draw like 5k people per game?

    Is it still 3-0?

  30. Jenn Says:

    Yep, still 3-0.

    And the latest on Ruiz:
Ruiz, who has been on the 15-day disabled list since April 10 with a strained right oblique, will begin a rehabilitation assignment Saturday for Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Ruiz is eligible to be activated Sunday, although Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said it is unlikely Ruiz will be activated then.

But Ruiz has made progress. He is hitting, throwing and catching without symptoms of the injury. If he continues to make progress, it should not be long before he is back on the 25-man roster.

  31. Doug Says:

I would of taken Myers out of the game when the Phillies had a runner in scoring postion. If Florida hadnt made so many blunders on the base paths we would be getting killed.

  32. Johnny Snowden Says:

i dunno gavin … maybe espn thinks myers is getting squeezed but plenty of pitcher can get through a smaller strike zone without giving up 6 walks in less than 6 innings including the pitcher. It doesnt help that the phils have only 2 runs and 14 hits in their last 26 innings.

  33. Georgie Says:

So Myers doesn’t look good tonight? Did he bring Bad Brett to the game?

I’m hoping the pitching looks better once Ruiz is back.

  34. Johnny Snowden Says:

    mee too georgie.

  35. Jenn Says:

I can’t see either (damn Comcast Network) but from what I’m hearing he’s not doing too well. My friend and I like to joke when he has a bad game, he takes it out on the wife. My guess is she’s packing for a hotel stay for tonight.

  36. Johnny Snowden Says:

at least werth has figured out Johnson tonight.

  37. Johnny Snowden Says:

haha ur not the only one jenn. tasteless as it is.

  38. Johnny Snowden Says:

i’ve got a good feeling about dobbs here in this situation.

  39. Johnny Snowden Says:

    well never mind then.

  40. Jenn Says:

    haha

  41. Jenn Says:

Not that it’s funny but…. you know. I’d rather look at it as comical than getting all up in arms and frustrated.

  42. Andy Says:

Not that I care because the Phils are losing but why does comcast have the sixers on when the sixers are also on espn2????

  43. Johnny Snowden Says:

marlins are in first place and their top four are hitting .287 collectively. Phills top 4 are hitting .244 collectively.

  44. Johnny Snowden Says:

Andy …comcast just wanted to make sure you didn’t miss a sixers beat. haha

  45. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

I don’t think you can blame the pitching problems on Marson, I mean the guy has had a drink or 2 in the pros.
Coste, has obviously not handled the group well, but I think this is a pitching issue and lack of preparation and lack of focus.

Marson has done pretty well considering the situation he has been thrown in.

giving up 3 runs in 6 innings is not horrible much better than previous outings, but this hitting lineup and the lack of patience at the plate, lack of any kind of hitting is ridiculous! So frustrating to watch!!

  46. Johnny Snowden Says:

jeff of nova yeah … LA just said “at least rollins glove is still valuable.”

  47. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

New pitcher…….. 3 pitches, 3 strikes Rollins out. Point prooved!

  48. Georgie Says:

Aren’t the Phils getting any hits again?

  49. Andy Says:

I would prefer to see Marson in the bigs rather then Coste. Agreed Coste contributed dearly in the past but I see nothing but ups from Marson in the future. Coste is getting a bit old to me and he seems to be losing stock every day he is in the lineup

  50. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

I think Charlie needs to break up this lineup maybe something totally erratic… like this
    Victorino
    Utley
    Ibanez
    Howard
    Werth
    Feliz
    Rollins
    Coste

  51. Johnny Snowden Says:

i totally agree andy. He needs more time to work with our pitchers too.

  52. Geoff Says:

IM sick of watching the same old suckiness pattern, they need to get it together. Same old story. Early home run, behind all game, team starts pressing, cant produce runs, etc…

  53. Georgie Says:

I don’t know, I thought maybe getting away from CBP would wake them up a bit, but it doesn’t look that way.

  54. Johnny Snowden Says:

yeah jeff. i dunno how a guy can hit .159 and still be ur lead-off hitter. I know it’s “early” but you can’t say that forever and at this point … any change can do rollins some good. Can’t get much worse anyway.

  55. Andy Says:

On a side note at least the Iron Pigs are winning. You can always tell when good tings are happening on Friday fireworks night…whenever something good happens in the game I get to see a brief fireworks show before the one at the end of the game…haha

  56. Geoff Says:

Marson needs to stay up and they need to get additional relief help or a RH bat in return for Coste.

  57. Geoff Says:

Putting Marson back down to AAA at this point will only HURT his development because he has played well since being called up. If he hasnt played well then you could send him back down, but not now..

  58. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

    Agreed Andy on Coste,

    Marson definitely has ups

I said it about 2 months ago,
One of my biggest worries with this team going into the title defense is the lack of challenge for our everyday position players. We do not have any youth on this roster before Marson came up. The starters have showed lately what I was fearing, lack of hunger to win, no one pushing for playing time, Dobbs is set as a pinch hitter, he has been absolutely horrible in that role. Stairs has been good, but there is no one on the bench to spark the lineup every so many days. Thats why I wouldn’t been against Sheffield signing, something new and different.
Mayberry could maybe put in some spark. I am not sure that is why I teach 6th graders not run a baseball team.

When they get set in their lineup and they are hot its great but this team is so streaky, so they need to beable to split it up and break up the stagnant play when they are cold!

Anyhow going to watch the sixers

  59. Georgie Says:

I’m almost glad I can’t see it, I’d no doubt be asleep by now, suckiness for sure.

  60. Geoff Says:

Yeah they need to keep that hunger in the lineup with Marson, and just go with him. Matt Stairs is the tying run!

  61. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

God I hope if it gets to Marson they do not pinch hit for him, like they have the last couple of times at the end of the game. Let the kid go, see what he can do!

  62. Jenn Says:

Not that I really care but does anyone have the score on the Sixers game right now?

  63. Geoff Says:

Werth hit a double, Ibanez walked, Feliz was PH for stairs, stairs up 2-0

  64. Johnny Snowden Says:

    strairs!!!!

  65. Geoff Says:

Base hit Stairs, Werth scores, Ibanez to third. Lindstrom threw two straight fastballs to Stairs. Stairs is always going to hit the second fastball in a row…Miguel Cairo Pinch running, Marson at the plate.

  66. Andy Says:

Put on MLB network if you have it, phils on now.

  67. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

Okay kid lets make your mark!

  68. Johnny Snowden Says:

    74-57 sixers jenn

  69. Geoff Says:

Eric Bruntlett on deck to pinch hit for Jimmy Rollins, 3-1 to marson

  70. Andy Says:

    Loaded for Bruntlett

  71. Johnny Snowden Says:

im just not even gonna say anything

  72. Geoff Says:

YEs! Marson waited Lindstrom out with veteran-like patience. Walks, bases loaded.!!!!

  73. Georgie Says:

    jenn, Sixers up 74-59, 3rd.

Yeah, Phils on MLB, thanks Andy!!!

  74. Geoff Says:

    The Beard is up…

  75. Andy Says:

Rollins on deck…Brunlett hitting for 9 posistion

  76. Geoff Says:

Wow…nasty sharp curveball from Lindstrom – rings up Bruntlett.

  77. Geoff Says:

    sorry bout that, rollins up…

  78. Georgie Says:

Oh no, they took it off, what’s happening?

  79. Jenn Says:

Thanks guys. Not a big basketball fan, but good for them.

    UGH here comes JRoll

  80. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

    The Beard is down..

Oh no here we go Rollins what is the high low on 3 pitches

  81. Geoff Says:

    Jimmys ahead 2-1…hitters count..

  82. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

Wow all of a sudden Mr. Patience!

  83. Geoff Says:

NICE!!! JImmy took two pitches out of the zone…ibanez walked home bases still loaded one run game….victorino up…

  84. Johnny Snowden Says:

    just …. oh man.

  85. Geoff Says:

    2-1 to victorino…

  86. Johnny Snowden Says:

    HOLY CRAP!!!

  87. Georgie Says:

AAghhh-they’re talking about it on MLB but not showing it.

  88. Geoff Says:

    YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GRAND SLAM SHANE VICTORINO!!!!!!!

  89. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

    OMG!!!

    VICTORINO GRAND SLAM!

  90. Andy Says:

I was just thinking the same thing Georgie……YESSSSSS!!!!!!! sALAMI

  91. Johnny Snowden Says:

    right down the pipe!!!

  92. nate Says:

holy crap on a crap crap crapity crap!!!

  93. Jenn Says:

    WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOO VICTORINO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  94. Georgie Says:

Get the F out! Salami by Vic!!!!!

  95. Geoff Says:

    Shane SMOKED that ball..that was a bomb…

  96. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

Kerp pouring it on, want to see the middle of the order hit well for once.

  97. Geoff Says:

Now Lidge needs to get back out there and get his confidence back.

  98. Geoff Says:

    NICE!!! Home Run Chase Utley!!1

  99. Johnny Snowden Says:

    !!!

  100. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

    Oh YEAH!!!!! Utley Outa Here!

  101. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

Yeah you put Lidge out there regardless of the score at this point. Make a statement!

    WFC!!

  102. Georgie Says:

Lidge should have some swagger after nailing the big boy with that pitch yesterday.

    Hahaha, Chase HR too!!!!!!!! hahahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!

  103. Geoff Says:

Matt Lindstrom has allowed 7 runs in 2/3 of an inning!!! Can you send him back out to close the next time even? They should use that Leo Nunez guy as their closer…

Lindstrom completely lost control….massive heaters (98 MPH) but no control at all…he needs to dial it down to 95 and pick spots…

anyways…what an amazing inning for the phils…

  104. Johnny Snowden Says:

I’m a real big fan of that lindstrom right now

  105. Doug Says:

OH MAN HOWARD JUST MISSED ONE. OH BABBBY

  106. Jenn Says:

This is why I learned long ago to not give up on a game and do something else. You just never know with the Fightin’s. I just wish they would wake up before the 8th or 9th inning.

  107. Georgie Says:

They were saying on MLB that they think Lindstrom is injured.

  108. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

Man Howard how could break the string of home runs with that double my goodness!! We need to send you down!
    LOL

  109. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

Maybe we will bat around 2x:)

  110. Andy Says:

Exactly Jenn. I was reading posts earlier in the day and all the people did on here was complain about the Phils lack of production. Guess what people we are only what 14 games into the season. Its not like they are 0-14. As a phillies fan I am telling everyone on here to relax and not be so negative. Good things will happen…a la tonight.

  111. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

    Good Innning Boys!

Now I want to see Lidge and Marson learn to handle his slider! Might as well learn now!

  112. cxl72 Says:

Charlie always says that if you keep us down we’ll throw a crooked number on you. What an inning. Have to keep that momentum going.

  113. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

I agree, Andy but before this inning, this front of the lineup has been way too, aggressive, more like a group of rookies!!

Hopefully this will be the stepping stone they need!

  114. fanman Says:

The Shanester does it A GRAND SALAMI oh yeah ….. DOG night in Florida……now if only Lidge could hold this one for us….come on Lidge…just remember all the candy ass saves you had last year which was about half of them…..

  115. Andy Says:

Jeff…Nothing wrong with being aggressive. I would rather that then a bunch of guys sitting on their heels with bats on shoulders.

  116. Georgie Says:

Andy, there’s nothing wrong with discussing the Phils problems, it makes for some interesting banter.

  117. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

Andy, I agree with the aggressive part put they are being wrecklessly aggressive that is not good for anyone that is what I mean by looking like rookies.

  118. Andy Says:

Good point. But at the same time its always….ALWAYS negative.

  119. Andy Says:

    OK Jeff gotcha.

  120. Geoff Says:

Madson comes with high heat for each of his two K’s…nice.

  121. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

not I, I am very optimistic, I am a straight shooter If it walks like a duck quacks like a duck I call it a duck, lately they have put up all ducks:(

  122. cxl72 Says:

The Phils just go through hitting funks from time to time. Its like a contagious flu. Andy and Jeff are correct, we all relax and just take it game by game.

  123. cxl72 Says:

Phillies Nation should run a pool to see which game will the Phillies pitchers NOT let up a home run. I’ll go with tomorrow.

  124. Geoff Says:

NICE!!! Madson blows him away. Gets out of a jam, strikes out the side. Confidence back…

  125. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

game, will take that great comeback, Nats almost came back and Reds are only 1 down now

  126. Johnny Snowden Says:

    all I know is I’ll take a 7 run 9th anytime.

  127. Jenn Says:

I don’t know what was said/done to light their fire in the 9th but I hope they keep it going. Da*n I wish I could have watched this one. Oh well, there’s always tomorrow.

  128. Georgie Says:

Isn’t it Moyer tomorrow? If so, I’ll go with the next time Joe pitches.

  129. Georgie Says:

Not a big Sixers fan, but they blew their lead, 2 point game now.

  130. Jenn Says:

I thought it was Blanton tomorrow?

  131. Jenn Says:

    Oh, nope. It’s Park.

  132. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

Go Sixers! finish this game and it will be a great night!

    See you all tomorrow!

  133. cxl72 Says:

Stop the HR streak, I’m saying Park stops it tomorrow, make your choice….

    4/25 , Park @ FL, 9 1/3 IP, 2 HR
    4/26 , Moyer @ FL, 17.0 IP, 5 HR
    4/27, Blanton v Wash, 16.0 IP, 3 HR
    4/28, Hamels v Wash, 13.0 IP, 5 HR
    4/29, Myers v Wash, 25 2/3 IP, 8 HR

  134. Georgie Says:

Really? Park tomorrow? I’m going to make an early prediction and say he doesn’t give up a HR!

I’m off to find a good horror flick to cap off this evening.

  135. I know Sal.... Says:

hey guys, I didn’t have time to read all the comments…but I noticed someone say the game was on CN8 and not in HD. 201 is the CN8 HD station, the game was on there. I’m watching the replay on there now too.
