Madson Blows 2-Run Lead; Phils Lose

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Sat, April 18, 2009 02:30 AM

Ryan Madson entered the game with a 7-5 lead. He left with the Phillies down 8-7. The Phillies lost, 8-7.

Don’t completely blame Madson. Starter Cole Hamels allowed five runs in six innings — all five runs came through home runs. Those five runs evaporated the five that the Phillies scored in the first inning. Chase Utley knocked a three-run home run for an early lead, then Chris Coste drove in two with a single.

The Phils added to that lead with RBI by Ryan Howard and Pedro Feliz. They had a 7-1 lead at one point. But that ended quickly.

Madson allowed three runs in the eighth, and though Brad Lidge escaped the ninth without harm, the Phils couldn’t seize the win from San Diego. All of this on Harry Kalas appreciation day.

Simply stated, this is not the team that won the World Series last year. Not even close. If you score more than 5 runs a game (they’re currently at 5.4) and can’t win these games on a consistent basis then you’re in big, big trouble. The entire pitching staff is atrocious this season. Everyone. The Phils have the second worst ERA in baseball at at 7.06 and are tied for worst in baseball with 23 homers allowed. The scary thing is, there’s no sign that it’s going to get better anytime soon, as everyone is consistently awful. Something is very, very wrong.

  2. NJ Says:

Am not one for pessimism but something isn’t quite right here, it’s still very early but this team looks scared.

  3. Dan Says:

I like how we lost to the Nationals who are 1-8, that was real cute.

  4. fred Says:

Hamels to the D.L now please. Giving up 3 HR to san diego should not happen to an ace, something is clearly wrong with Hamels. 12 runs in 2 starts is shocking

  5. Brooks Says:

7-1 lead with Hamels on the mound? Sure W –
Radio – guys, if you look at the April starts from however long you can remember, the offense is usually sputtering at this time, through the entire month of April.
Let’s not sing doom and gloom, it is so early!
Jimmy and Shane led off the first with base hits and both scored! Utley with a 3 run shot in the first! And Cole on the mound – dissappointment yes, doom and gloom?
Howard strikes out 4 (let me spell that out, FOUR) times – Werth leaving men on base, that is more like the April folly we are used to.
Next up, Brett Meyers – he has given up 6 hrs in his 2 starts so far. It isn’t pretty guys but it is early April.
Ryan Madson giving up the lead and even Brad Lidge left the bases loaded in the top of the 9th – it does not look the same but it is so early..

  7. GM-Carson Says:

You want the truth, you can’t handle the truth!

Truth- 2008 is over, and it was great, but it’s time to take care of business in 2009.

Truth- Ryan Madson is not Mariano Rivera (Scott Boras is a doucheosaurus).

Truth- Striking out 4 times in a game is shameful (yes, you Howard!).

Truth- Phils are 4.5 games back in the NL East.

Truth- our leadoff hitter’s OPS is .313, that would only be good if that were his batting average.

Truth- Teams are batting .293 off of our staff with a .919 OPS.

Truth- April is by far the easiest month on the schedule versus opponents, yet the Phillies record is a customary losing April 4-5, which is unacceptable.

I just got home from the Kalas memorial. The Phillies and David Montgomery are very, very classy. Thank you Phillies. Thank you.

  10. Mike in San Diego Says:

I’m glad we won. (Hell, we lost 99 last year, so I’m G-L-A-D we won!)
Best to the Phillies. You have a great team. Hang in there, you’ll be fine. Very sad to spoil your Kalas tribute. He was a great man and a true legend. We’re sorry for the loss of his voice, but also the loss of the man of character that he was. Pure class. He is missed in San Diego, too.

  11. Mike in San Diego Says:

Hamels is from here in San Diego. Let the conspiracy theories begin…

  12. sawaob12 Says:

Don’t worry bout the Phils just yet. This page is full of over-reactors…Hamels is fine. He needs to get loosened up a bit more. I expect to see him back to his 92-93MPH fastball tomorrow, which will further help his changeup. Madson, honestly, was due for this performance. Guy hadn’t pitched since Monday, (same with Lidge) so it’s possible them had some rust. Also, you can’t expect Madson to hold every game he’s in. Guy was filthy last year but last year is last year. What worries me most right now is Rollins really struggling and Werth just being atrocious at the plate. How’s Ibanez looking in Phillies red though, eh?

Also, don’t worry about being 4.5 games back already. You really think the Marlins are going to finish 161-1? Mets and Braves are both 5-5, with the Phils .5 game behind them. Think those fans are freaking out?

  13. sawaob12 Says:

and by “tomorrow” mean his next scheduled start

  14. Phil Says:

im not worried about werth he carried the offense last week. im worried about the pitching

  15. NJ Says:

I think it was a mistake to start Hamels who should have been skipped a start to decide whether he was healthy or needed a retroactive DL stint but the Phils are getting nothing out of our starting pitching right now. No wonder the bullpens bleeding when the entire staffed looks baffled.

The Nats are Padres are always going to win games, expecting sweeps is foolhardy but those aren’t the games to let get away facing inexperienced players.

  16. Greg V. Says:

There is no reason in the world to put Hamels on the DL, that won’t solve anything. He isn’t perfect yet, but there was much improvement over his last start. It was a lousy game, definately. Is there a plausible reason to blow a 7-1 lead? No, but we’ve been on the other side of that coin more often than this side. It sucks, but today is a new day. Some days you win, some days you lose, some days it rains. The Fightins will be fine.

  17. fanman Says:

Hamels just has to wife and ask her what he should do ….remember 2007…but its a young long season….at least he brought his era. down to about 14.00 but all in all the league has his number as well as Jamie Moyers…can’t really understand why they re-signed him.

  18. Manny Says:

It was good to start Hamels. He is NOT injured and needs to get MLB action to keep improving. Re Madson and Lidge, I’m not concerned for now. They haven’t played in a while.(I think Madson should’ve pitched in the 8th when we were down 4-2 against the Nats.) These off days are killing us and messing with our pitchers. I’m more concerned with our starting pitching in general, but I wish there would be some way to factor out the off days from the equation.

  19. Phil Says:

lincecums fastball is 91 and he too has been horrible. i think him and hamels should both be on the dl so they can go down to cancun and sip margaritas in a beach together while chatting about how

  20. Phil Says:

they are the 2 best young pitchers in baseball

  21. Phillies Phan SC Says:

I was at that game, and in the 4th and 5th innings Hamels kept walking off the mound and just did not look right. I agree, there is something wrong. On the days the pitching is decent, the offense stinks and the days when the offense it good the pitching is not. That being said, I don’t think everyone on the pitching staff is awful; the starters are the ones giving up the runs. The relievers (exception last night) are not really giving anything too bad. Still, it is April, and we have time to get it together.

  22. Mark B. Says:

How come the offense packed it in after 3 2/3 innings? I guess Madson was due to get pounded. And what’s with Hamels? I thought that his discomfort was over?

  23. Joel Says:

I agree with the first post, this is not the team that won the World Series last year. Hopefully they bounce back soon!

  24. Cole H. Says:

I agree with the last post this is not the team that won the world series last year. This team is a collection of homosexuals and transvestites. It’s really a perfect fit for the city of Philidelphia. Let’s go Mets!

  25. Mike in San Diego Says:

Cole. Here’s some history for ya… First hit at Citifield – a Padre. First homerun at Citifield – a Padre. First run scored at Citifield – a Padre. First victory at Citifield – the San Diego Padres.
