Manuel Decides To Split The Lefties

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Tue, April 07, 2009 03:49 PM

One night of lefty rolling against a right-hander was more than enough, as Charlie Manuel has posted this lineup against Jair Jurrjens tonight:

Rollins / Victorino / Utley / Howard / Werth / Ibanez / Feliz / Ruiz / Moyer.

For the record, I prefer Victorino in the two-hole. Gamenight post coming at 5:30 p.m.

  1. Evan Says:

There’s a lot of ways Charlie can play around with the lineup. I’m not sure how I like Werth following Howard. I hope he can find something that works!

  2. Manny Says:

Will this game be on TV for those not in Philly? I don’t think MLB Extra Innings will show it…. AGH! Help!

  3. Hugh Says:

Extra Innings is not showing it, likely due to a full NHL night competing for air time. I’ll be watching the Flyers and following the Phils on the computer!

  4. Justin Says:

As far as i know manny i think it’s only on WPHL tonight, no ESPN, and since TBS doesn’t carry the Braves anymore i don’t believe it’s going to be national.

  5. Albert Says:

MLB TV is your best bet

  6. Manny Says:

Thanks for the replies… Unfortunately, I don’t have MLBTV because I’m planning to get MLB Extra Innings anyway… so I guess I’ll just read the comments on here, and perhaps check if someone is streaming it online for free.

  7. Gavin Says:

Do they show the Phillies announcers on MLB Extra innings? It used to be exclusivly other teams broadcast crew when they played the Phils.

  8. The Dipsy Says:

Well, I really don’t know why you have to split the lefties up. Its ok, I guess. I think Mike Gonzalez is the only lefty closer in the NL isn’t he? And, if I’m not mistaken, Ibanez has better career numbers against lefties than Werth. What I DON’T like is taking Werth’s OB% and selectivity out of the top and putting him in an RBI spot where he’ll feel like he has to swing to do his job. We’ll see. maybe Charlie will just do this against the Braves and selected lefty starters (i.e. Santana, Johnson, etc.)

    The Dispy.

  9. Ryan S Says:

Are you kidding me about MLB extra innings? How does the NHL black out the MLB games?

Why do they play NHL on MLB Innings channels? I just purchased MLB extra innings and haven’t used it before last night. Can someone explain it to me or show me where I can find a line-up or web site for it?

  10. Manny Says:

I’m equally upset about it, Ryan.

I looked it up. After clicking on the link, go to “download PDF schedule” and you’ll see that tonight’s Phillies game is not on there.

  11. Geoff Says:

They needed to do that..its not just gonzalez, last year they could send in some BUM like pedro feliciano and hed strikeout howard and utley. CANT have that extend to ibanez.

  12. Keith Says:

I think justin.tv will have a free live feed, will check and see at 7.

  13. dan Says:

I’ll be in class (in Philly) tonight, but I want to stream it on my computer. I have mlb.tv (I follow the M’s too), but will it be blacked out?

  14. Travis Says:

The game is on channel 329 WCPH or WPCH for me except its braves broadcasters. Oh well. I like this lineup and it should stay this way. Expect Dobbs or Bruntlett to be in at 3B because afternoon game and last game of series 1 or 2 bench guys get in. Ring ceremony tom. Joe Blanton vs Javier Vasquez. From Blanton’s spt and career this could be a breakout year for him. Needa to win today and tom. 3:05pm start. Miss 1 hour because of work time. Anyways after this series we head to colorado and san diego. I think we’re hosting the nats after or the nats are hostin us.

Afternoon mlb game update: Yesterday chi sox vs royals was played today. Gill Meche vs Mark Buehrle.Meche for royals was great giving up a run in 7IP while striking out 6. Unfortuanetly for the royals they were leading 2-1 bottom 8 when former phillie jim thome hit a two 3 run homer and in the end the white sox won 4-2. Currently in San Fran, the start of the game was delayed by rain but right now san fran leading brew crew 3-0 top 2nd. travis ishikawa hit a 3run triple. Lincecum vs Suppan in that one. Yesterday rays vs red sox was played today. James Shield vs Josh Beckett. Currently bottom 3 sox leadin rays 4-1. pedroia solo shot in 1st. Pat the bat burrell in his first official at bat as a ray hit a deep fly out. Maybe a double at CBP. currently red sox threatening. 2 outs runners on corners. Burrell will bat 2nd next inning. Gonna go watch that game on tv.

  15. Don M Says:

Manuel had Werth 2nd the other day because he said Victorino wasn’t taking good swings, and didn’t get enough at-bats in Spring Training/ WBC..

Werth will be the #5 guy this year

  16. Ryan S Says:

Keith, how does that live feed work? will it be on the front page?

  17. shag beta sigma delta Says:

I live in Vermont and have the sunday package for season tickets, and MLB Extra innings is showing the game at my house. So any of you want to drive the 6 hours to Burlington you are welcome to do so. I like splitting up the lefties, just not sure who should be in the 5 spot, maybe Feliz will have a great season, and bat 320 with 30 hrs, and he can bat there. I am sure we have a real #2 hitter, I think both Vic and Jayson are better 5 or 6 hitters, which would be 5 hole to break up the lefties.

  18. Paul Says:

I agree on Victorino in the 2 hole. I think tonight lineup looks much better than Sundays.

  19. Griffin Says:

The Dipsy, Ibanez has a career BA of .268 against LHP while Werth is at .291, and Ibanez has an OPS of .733 against LHP while Werth is at .920, so Werth is MUCH better than Ibanez against lefties.

Breaking up the 3 lefties is beneficial against LOOGY relievers coming in in the 6th, 7th and 8th innings also, not just against lefty closers. Not every starting pitcher is going to pitch 8 innings and hand it off to the closer like Lowe did.

I’m glad to see Manuel showing flexibility.

  20. Bruce Says:

Manual’s attempt to bring life to the Phillies’ slumbering offense by shuffling the lineup resulted in goose eggs for the entire nine innings. However, it’s obvious that is a necessary strategy to be used for this season so long as the team lacks the additional RH bat off the bench.
